ATTENDANCE Congratulations to Zoe Bailey, Callum Barnard, Tyler Douglas, Eliza Seymour, Molly McCuish and Cooper Seymour for achieving a 100% attendance rate in Term 4. Awesome job! THANK YOU It is with great sadness that I am writing my final newsletter as Principal of Miling PS as I am the recommended applicant for Principal at Wickepin PS. This is a very difficult article to write as I am sad to be leaving such a beautiful school and community, however as hard as this decision was to make, farm life with my family calls.

I say this as much as I can, but our students are absolutely gorgeous and they make Miling such a lovely school. I am still astonished at their level of commitment to school and their impeccable manners and behaviour. The students are why we all ‘do what we do’ at school. Their happy and smiling faces, inquisitive nature, celebrating their successes and supporting their goals is what it is all about. I have enjoyed teaching across the school and will certainly miss all of their unique characters. I wish all of our students the best and look forward to hearing of their continued successes as they move through the years.

I feel so incredibly fortunate to have worked at Miling PS. I have never come across such dedicated and hardworking staff as I have here. I cannot thank my staff enough for their support throughout my time and for the passion they display toward their jobs. I have been blessed with such lovely colleagues and friends.

To the wonderful Miling Community, I cannot thank you enough for your support and friendship. I have made lifelong friends for which I am truly grateful. Community support for a school is crucial and our school is so fortunate to have such a supportive and committed community. Whether this be our School Board, P&C, parent helpers and volunteers in general, I thank you all for your tremendous support to our school. I am a country girl through and through, however have yet to come across such a united community. I am sure you will all support our school as we continue to work together to assist every child in reaching their full potential.

From the bottom of my heart; thank you! I will miss you all, however hope to keep in touch. Kind regards ASHLYN SIVIOUR

PRINCIPAL

It is with bittersweet feelings that we farewell our Principal, Miss Ashlyn

Siviour. Ashlyn is the recommended applicant for the role as Principal of

Wickepin Primary School, with her tenure beginning at the start of Term 1

next year.

We thank her for her commitment and tireless energy towards everyone and

everything at Miling Primary.

We will miss her terribly, but our loss is Wickepin’s gain.

All the very best Ashlyn. Take care and stay in touch.

OUTSTANDING ATTENDANCE

A massive congratulations to Molly McCuish who is our highest attending student for 2018. Molly has been awarded four 100%

Summer holidays with kids The summer holidays are an exciting time. It’s a time where you and your kids get to unwind after a busy year, and spend quality time together. Whether you’re hanging out in one spot or heading off to explore, holidays with kids are about planning for short attention spans and long travel times.

Here are some top tips:

Plan more breaks and fewer activities than you would if you were travelling on your own or with

adults.

Make sure you have plenty of stops for meals and drinks to keep everyone’s energy levels up.

Look for activities and local attractions to keep children entertained – for example, swimming,

games, playgrounds, carnivals, fun parks and movies. Plan downtime for yourself too. If your children are entertained with organised activities, playing with oth-er children, or being looked after by babysitters, you’ll get a break for yourself.

Summer is a time to be vigilant about water and sun safety, especially when holidaying away

from home, and in an unfamiliar place. In Australia, drowning is the number one cause of death for children under five years. To keep your chil-dren safe around water:

Always stay with your children and watch carefully when they are near water, even if they can swim.

Teach your children about water safety and make sure they learn how to swim.

Have the whole family learn first aid.

If you have a pool have it fenced with self-closing gates.

Never leave them alone in the bath. The Education Department offers low-cost VacSwim programs for school aged children. For more infor-mation on swimming lessons during summer via VacSwim go to www.det.wa.edu.au/curriculumsupport/swimming/detcms/portal/ and for water safety tips see www.lifesavingwa.com.au .

It is important to talk to your children about sun safety and teach them good sun protection habits.

Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.

Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30+ sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go out-

doors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun.

Slap on a hat that protects your face, head, neck and ears.

Seek shade. Slide on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian Standards.

Extra care should be taken between 10am and 3pm when UV levels reach their peak. For more infor-mation see the Cancer Council website: www.cancer.org.au.

Quick Tip

Getting your children to help you plan your holiday can get them interested and excited. Their input can help you have a holiday that’s fun for everyone. Some kids do get nervous about the break from routine. Talking about holiday plans is also a good way to help them settle into the idea and reduce anxiety.
