Kineplex, multi-carrier HF modem (R.R. Mosier & R.G. Clabaugh) 1957

Some earlier work was Holsinger’s 1964 MIT dissertation and some of Gallager’s early work on water filling.1964

Chang shows that multi-carrier modulation can solve the multipath problem without reducing data rate. This is generally considered the first official publication on multi-carrier modulation.1966

Saltzberg studied a multi-carrier system employing orthogonal QAM(O-QAM) of the carriers.1967

 U.S. patent on OFDM issued.1970

Weinstein and Ebert show that multi-carrier modulation can be accomplished using a DFT. Weinstein & Ebert proposed use of FFT and guard interval.1971

Hirosaki designed a subchannal-based equalizer for an orthogonally multiplexed QAM system.

1980

Keasler et al .described an OFDM modem for telephone networks. Cyclic Prefix (CP) used in 1980 – orthogonality problem being solved.Cimini at Bell Labs identifies many of the key issues in OFDM transmission and does a proof-of-concept design .Cimini described use of OFDM for mobile communications

1985

 Telebit Trailblazer Modem introduced

100 Gb/s CO-OFDM transmission over 1000 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with high spectral efficiency of 2 bit/s/Hz has been demonstrated by various groups. To date,As the industry is embracing the imminent commercial rollout of 100 Gb/s Ethernet (100 GbE), the feasibility of 1 Tb/s Ethernet is the next logical step. Also, multimode fiber in conjunction with multiple-input multiple-output OFDM (MIMO-OFDM) is proposed as a technology to achieve 100 Tb/s per fiber that takes advantage of mode multiplexing in the optical fiber.Future
