HEALTH AND SAFETY SECTOR GROUP STEERING COMMITTEE NOMINEES 2014 GREG DEARSLY First 4 Safety Ltd Greg is owner of First 4 Safety Ltd and has been involved in the provision of occupational safety and health advice and assistance for 13 years. From 2000 to 2006 Greg held various health and safety roles with Waste Management and subsequently was employed as the National Health, Safety and Environmental Manager for Transpacific Industries, a role he held for just over five years. During his years in health and safety in the waste industry, Greg was a member of the WasteMINZ Health and Safety Sector Group including four years as chairperson. Since pursuing a career as a self- employed health and safety consultant Greg has worked across a number of industries, with the majority of his time spent in civil construction, infrastructure, utilities and amenities sectors. Greg has continued to be involved in the waste industry, is a current member of WasteMINZ and has presented at various WasteMINZ conferences. Greg has advised waste companies around New Zealand on health and safety matters, including providing Health and Safety Assurance to the Ministry for the Environment during the TV Take Back Programme. Greg has also been involved in the continued development of the WasteMINZ Health and Safety Guidelines. MIKE COLLINS Smart Environmental Ltd Mike is currently a member of the WasteMINZ Health and Safety Group Steering Committee and a member of the New Zealand Safety Council. He has extensive experience in EPCM projects, in-house health, safety and environmental systems, project safety engineering and management, health, safety and environmental management, including quality systems and relevant standards. Mike has over 22 years of health, safety and environmental management experience and is the Compliance Manager with Smart Environmental Limited where he is responsible for the company’s compliance management systems. He has implemented and maintained management systems over the last two years to achieve ACC WSMP, AS/NZS 4801 and ISO 14001 accreditation for the company. Mike began his career in health, safety and environmental management with BMW car manufacturers where he was responsible for the SHEQ Management systems. He then joined Parsons Brinckerhoff where he became a member of the Global Safety Committee which effectively, is a joint Committee with Balfour Beatty. This committee represented seven different continents throughout the world with the aim of achieving “Worlds Good Safety Practice” where he gained extensive knowledge on “ZERO HARM” strategies and principles. Mike’s career includes work in New Zealand, England, U.S.A., Mozambique and South Africa. WENDI CROFT AECOM New Zealand Ltd Wendi is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) with 15+ years’ experience as a safety professional, an ecologist, and a leader in sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Her primary role is Safety, Health & Environment Manager for AECOM New Zealand, managing the corporate program and working in a wide variety of industries including rail, road, airside, water, wastewater, environmental remediation and contamination, building construction, industrial energy (thermal, nuclear, hydro), power transmission and distribution, forestry and oil and gas. Wendi is experienced in multiple international jurisdictions and achieving local and international standards and best practice. Her strengths include program and policy development, training development and delivery excellence (both online and classroom), communication skills and ability to motivate and engage with stakeholders, management and staff. She manages and directs corporate safety in design, sustainability, environmental management, health & well-being, and social responsibility programme, as they relate both to operations and to projects across New Zealand and around the globe. Wendi was appointed member of WorkSafe NZ’s Hazardous Substances Guidance Group, the Business Leaders H&S Forum Technical Advisory Group and is a consultant on the WorkSafe NZ Specialist Consultancy Panel.

alec mcneilMarlborough district council

alec is the solid Waste Manager at Marlborough district council and is responsible for the strategic direction and operational delivery of the region’s waste management and minimisation services including contract framework development. alec has been involved with the waste industry since the 1990s. operating at director level with some of the uK’s leading waste management companies, his experience stretches across landfill, transfer stations, hazardous waste, collections, recycling, special events, c&d recovery, local authority contracting, contaminated land and customer account management.

combining his private sector experience with his current role in a territorial authority has allowed alec to confirm his understanding of what is required to deliver safe, sustainable, efficient and cost-effective practices for both the community and the contractor. alec holds a qualification with the Institute of occupational safety and health (Iosh) and the International Institute of risk and safety Management (IIrsM) and has been involved in the design and layout of construction and demolition sorting plants.

karen murraysulo talbot ltd

Karen holds the position of general Manager at sulo’s auckland-based manufacturing facility and is responsible for overall management and performance of all operational business units within the company.

sulo manufacture and distribute wheelie bins for council collection contracts every year, with bin roll-outs ranging in numbers from 5,000 to 500,000. Bin distributions are high volume logistics exercises attracting complex levels of manual handling and transport movement including fork-lifts, trucks and shipping containers. since 2008, over 20 council tenders have been supplied throughout new Zealand.

the company is committed to continually improving environmental and occupational health and safety performance through established management systems and aims to eliminate work-related injury and illness, prevent pollution, and comply with all legislative requirements. Karen takes a lead role in managing these targets, and as the major supplier of these products and services to the waste industry, she also communicates on a daily basis with all of the larger collection contractors and many small to medium sized operators in this sector.

Karen is responsible for overseeing document control and development of procedure and policy of Iso 9001 Quality assurance within the new Zealand business and has been an active member of WasteMInZ’ health and safety sector group steering committee since 2009.

WarWick Jaineauckland council Warwick has 16 years experience working in senior management positions for three previous auckland tas, and is currently the Waste operations Manager for the auckland council.

he has managed a number of significant service changes involving strategic policy, and large scale procurement through to implementation, as well as strategic change management with the amalgamation of the seven auckland councils and the transition of waste services to operate under a single entity as an example.

he is a current WasteMInZ health and safety sector group steering committee member and has contributed towards the development of the h&s guidelines, and copttM waste module revisions.

Warwick is currently responsible for services including kerbside rubbish, recycling and inorganic collections to 550,000 households as well as street scape litter services, and bylaw enforcement to a population base of 1.4m people.

he operates within a range of traffic management environments from urban, rural, high density cBds, and remote gulf Islands. health and safety management, specifically to waste operations is a large component of his responsibilities.

he has had considerable exposure to all kerbside collection practices across new Zealand on large to medium scale that include bags, crates, wheelie bins, inorganic collections, illegal dumping and litter street scape services.

Warwick’s experience gained from the industry is considerable, especially around health and safety initiatives and required governance.

charles smithonyx group (Veolia environmental services)

charles is the hseQ Manager nZ for onyx group (Veolia environmental services). he has worked in a variety of industries such as environmental services, traffic control equipment manufacturing, avionics and satellite equipment design and manufacturing and mechanical product production.

charles’ health and safety achievements include substantial reduction in injury and incident statistics, development of proactive and continuous improvement cultures and development of the nZ national certificate in Waste collection (in conjunction with a training provider and Ito).

charles holds tertiary qualifications in mechanical engineering, quality assurance and industrial engineering. he has also completed various short courses and certificates, which have included health and safety, training and presentation skills, coaching and mentoring, financials, procurement, leadership and project management.

charles is hard-working, very committed and always completes what he starts. he strongly believes in a process of continuous improvement, both in his personal and professional life and thrives on challenges, where he can apply his current skills and learn new skills. charles is a team player, functioning equally well as a leader or a member of a team.

charles has been an active member of, and greatly enjoyed his involvement with the WasteMInZ health and safety sector group steering committee for the past five years and is proud of his dedication to the group.

guy smithtranspacific Industries group (nZ) ltd

guy is transpacific Industries group’s hse Manager overseeing hse across new Zealand. he has a strong background in the construction and transport industry from both a hse and training side. guy has driven a significant step-change in the company’s hse performance ensuring staff have a fresh understanding of why top-class hse performance is vital. guy is passionate but is a pragmatic advocate for the protection of people and enhancement of the environment through hse and has an excellent track record in driving a high performing safety culture in those industries he has worked.

projects worked on in new Zealand include the Manukau harbour crossing, Victoria park tunnel, central Motorway Junction stage 2, northern Busway, auckland International airport and state highway resurfacing.

guy has been actively involved in developing environmental training programmes along with health and safety training programmes which are used across a wide range of companies within the civil construction industry throughout new Zealand.

sara readenorthland Waste ltd sara has been the compliance Manager for northland Waste limited for the last 12 months. prior to that sara worked at refinery nZ in Marsden point, with her role there including work in the Internal audit team reviewing processes and procedures. an accountant by training and an associate Member of the chartered Institute of Management accountants, sara can bring valued experience from previous managerial roles.

In additional to her professional training, sara brings a friendly, hands-on attitude to the role and spends a large percentage of her time with the crew, on the job, in order to understand the real risks and be able to look for solutions based on involvement of frontline staff.

robyn VallomenviroWaste services ltd

robyn is a nZ registered nurse who entered the occupational health arena 15 years ago as an independent occupational health nurse. her experience includes, but is not limited to such industries as telecommunications, boatbuilding, newspapers, ports, corporates and now she is the national health and safety manager of enviroWaste; a hazardous waste, solid waste and recycling waste company.

robyn has been with enviroWaste services for over 10 years and is passionate about health and safety, enjoying the full support of enviroWaste services in her role.

robyn is also the president of the auckland group of the new Zealand occupational health nurses association (nZohna) and their executive representative at nZohna, secretary of the occupational health and safety Industry group (ohsIg) and has been the chair of the WasteMInZ health and safety sector group steering committee for the last six years.

brent suttonearthcare environmental ltd Brent brings a deep experience in occupational risk management and health and safety to the waste industry and has been an active member of the sector group since June 2011.

Brent works in partnership with clients and industry, providing practical advice to address health and safety risks and develop strategies to drive improvements in safety culture.

he is well regarded as a safety coach and for assisting clients to understand the importance of safety governance, setting clear and understandable safety objectives and providing safety leadership.

Brent is one of the few specialists in health and safety critical event management of fatality incidents. he has dealt with multiple fatality events in the waste industry and has written industry topics about drug and alcohol management and contractor management privacy issues.

Brent was previously general Manager of risk and compliance in the insurance industry, is an active member of the new Zealand society for risk Management, new Zealand Institute of safety Management, professional advisors association and is a registered advisor with the financial Markets authority.
