    A BRIEF HISTORICAL OVERVIEWOF MIDWIFERY IN SPAIN

    Up until the early 20 th century nursing andmidwifery in Spain were kept apart and wereregulated by different laws.

    It was in 1992 when the midwifery training program was established as a specialty of thenursing degree. This program acknowledges the

    scope of midwi es in both community andspeciali!ed hospital care.

    To assess and deli er care to all women whoe#perience heath problems during pregnancy"specially from the 2, th week of gestation.

    The midwife will carry out a full re ision of thewoman$s clinical history" laboratory and ultrasoundtests" as well as a physical" abdominal and aginal

    e#amination -from the /th

    week .rom the 2, th week of pregnancy the midwife must

    listen to the fetal heart rate and carry out fetalcardiotocography when indicated.

    The midwife is able to decide when a woman witha full term pregnancy needs to be admitted tohospital or when she needs to be seen by a doctor.

    In this hospital we ha e been pioneers" since weha e a protocol which enable midwi es todischarge some women from the emergency room.

    )idwi es also pro ide care to women during the postpartum" specially with breastfeeding problems.There is a 2, hour phone number for women toadress their feeding problems to the midwife.

    there are no complications.These mothers will come backto see the midwife , hoursafter deli ery to ensure theirwell&being and to help themwith breastfeeding.

    FUTURE PROSPECTS

    )idwi es are not in ol ed in the care of womenand babies during pregnancy in two units%& 8th week low risk pregnancy clinic" currently conducted

    by a general nurse.

    & etal physiopathology clinic" were women with high risk pregnancies undergo fetal monitoring and are assessed by an obstetrician. +gain" itis currently conducted byageneral nurse.

    e belie e that midwi es are the most suitable professionals to take care of women" and hope tode elop these functions in the near future.
