CENTRAL OHIO NEWSMark Bullimore, Reporting

Remembering PaulaPaula Elaine Justl, one of the pillars of Co-

lumbus Bridge, passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2005, after a brief illness. She was a highly regarded bridge teacher in central Ohio, having taught many hundreds of students at the Upper Arlington Continuing Education Program, the Columbus Bridge Center, Aloha Bridge Club, and numerous private classes. She achieved the rank of Silver Life Master having won many events and placing highly in two national events.

She will be missed by all, but probably most by her favorite partner Terry James. Terry tells of her great sense of humor (sometimes a little offbeat or risqué). The following story was from a Nationals in Washington D.C. There was a team event that used to be limited to men. Terry and Paula wanted to play in the event, but had to go to the partnership desk where they were paired with two priests. They definitely had to watch their language. Paula made the following comment when they were about to begin (you have to know that Terry is half Jewish) “We have a five-person team: two Jews, two priests, and God.” Changes for October Sectional

The Columbus Fall Sectional will be held on October on 2-23, 2005, at the Haimerl Center, 42 Morse Road, Columbus. There are a couple of changes to the schedule including raising the masterpoint limit on the non-life master games. Details are available in the last issue of the Mid-west Monitor and on the ACBL tournament page. Come along and experience this fabulous playing site and our great unit hospitality.COBA Summer Sectional

Stockwell and Richard Cornett. Qualifying in B, Willie Alley, Susan Donaldson, Patricia Gibson, Chris Tiahrt, Janet Robinson and Claude Williams.

Evansville attempted two new ways to get new players. On August 8, they held a special game at Tri-State Athletic Club. There were 20 tables of bridge with four of the tables from Tri-State, many of whom never before played duplicate. Also, there were 2 people taking les-

sons from Pat and Ray Andersen. On August 8, they had an open house/home-style bridge game. Eleven new players played and three of them now play regularly. If your club has any new ways of attracting members to your games, please share them with this reporter for future editions. I know all clubs would appreciate it.

New members to Unit 93 include; Bonnie Metcalfe, Thomas Rusche, and Rita Holtzman. May all their finesses work!

The North American pair game was held June 8. At the Tuesday night club on July 9, Byron Hill, club manager, presented certificates to Rob-ert Tweel and Raymond Franks, congratulating them for coming in 4st “in the world.” This is quite a feat and we are very proud of these two

players. Also, others who placed locally were: Dora Kay Grubb and Byron Hill, F. Lyle Sattes and Robert Allen, and Barbara Clark and Lois Kaufman. Our club is small and it is gratifying to receive notice of their standing worldwide.

In attendance at the Alexandria regional, June 28-July 4, were Jim Olson, David Olson, Dora Kay Grubb, and Byron Hill. They were fourth in Swiss team A/X. They were first in X, but fourth overall paid more gold points.

We wish a speedy recovery to Bess Stahl and Roger Kiser. We welcome home Dee Hull, Mary Boyd, and Bennie Shields from a month-long trip to China. To our newcomers Ross and Diane Al-len, Mary Jo Brick, Candy Galyean, Jody Pauley, and Emma Jean Thompson, Welcome!

The Louisville club did well at the Nationals in Atlanta. Stars included Dorsey Brown, Scott and Susan Cox, Bruce Newkirk, Mike Sloan, Kit Overpeck, and Marty Weinberg.

Several members of the club sponsored a benefit to raise money for the Education Fund for Susanne Turner’s children. Susanne recently lost her struggle with cancer and left two very young children. Summer Bridge Camp Huge SuccessBLUEGRASS BRIDGEHarry Gordon, Reporting

Under the guidance of Ann McCullough, Georgia Ringo, Lorraine Gibbs, and Tyra Hel-lard as library liaison, up to 20 high school and middle school students, some as young as , participated in a series of lessons introducing the fundamentals of bridge. They also played in games directed by Mike McCann. The club ap-preciates the time and work contributed by our talented and resourceful members in encouraging a new generation of bridge players.

Can you ever remember when there were five new Life Masters at one time??

Walt and Atha Dickenson became the newest Life Masters from Jessamine County. They re-cently went over after “a long grueling struggle,” as Walt said with a smile. While Walt and Atha have been married for 39 years, they have only been playing bridge for about eight. Walt retired as a clinical psychologist and Atha served as a

guidance counselor and poet laureate for Lafay-ette High School.

Bill Collis, Terrell Holt, and Fran Hume also gained the rank of Life Master.

At the August Dayton regional, Nancy Gordon and Jimmy Blackwell won the Satur-day stratified open. Playing on separate teams, Sue Bullard and her partner and Michael and Sandra Marlin both made the semis of the flight A knockout.

By next summer, I hope to learn Bulgarian, in case the Bulgarian national team returns to Day-ton. Ruman and Kaelin were too tough for us!!

The excitement mounts as the Louisville-Lex-ington Regional in November is just around the corner. HOPE TO SEE ALL OF YOU THERE at Caesar’s in Indiana. Take the New Albany exit off -64 and follow the signs. Eight miles on the right.

CINCINNATI NEWSJim Myers, Reporting

Until they were “outed” in the previous issue of the Monitor, the Committee of Cranks and Crabs (CCC) had operated sub rosa, below the radar, and generally out of sight. But now, they have begun to hold regular meetings, have elected officers, set agenda, adopted long and short-term goals, and demanded permanent north-south seat-ing for their members in good standing.

Just the other day CCC’s recording secretary, Regina, was playing with her regular partner, Renwick, when she made a cue bid intended to show second round control (a singleton) of opponent’s bid suit, and asking partner for the queen of trump (her Whizbang cue bid). Ren-wick, the hapless wretch, mistook her call for a western cue bid and bid 3NT with Jxx. Regina, in turn, took his bid to show both the spade queen and the ace of opponent’s suit, bid a NT grand slam, doubled and down six. It goes without saying whose fault that was!

Next day, I walked into the club a bit early and Regina summoned me to her private table to regale me. “Yesterday,” she sighed “(Try to pay attention, Jim) . . . Rennie had AQxxx of hearts or spades, Jxx of the opponent’s suit or something like that and 0 scattered points and a singleton club — no it was a diamond, well anyway . . . ta daa, ta daa, ta daa . . . ( I was wondering whether the director had brought any pretzels).” All of a sudden, “What would you have bid?” she asked loudly, apparently repeating herself. I asked her what she would have bid, gave her explanation

the traditional ten second pause, and said “Me too.” I wandered off to check on the pretzels.

Later in the men’s room Renwick told me about the same hand. Although he had changed the emphases some, he achieved the same result — i.e., I agreed with him, too. Then I went back for another pretzel and Rennie went back to Regina. By the time I got to their table, several rounds later, they were cooing like lovebirds and and high-fiving over a forcing call that had been muffed by a novice opponent the previous round. “Better to be lucky than good,” quipped Regina.

On another note, Cincinnati has some fairly recently annointed Life Masters. Congratulations Nancy Crell, Gayle McCann, Gayle Niemann, Sanderson Orr, Pat Dutson, and Michael Lipp. They have surely earned this distinction, playing against the likes of Regina and Renwick.

I am happy to report the removal of the black crepe that has loomed over the Cincinnati Bridge Center since the defeat by Dayton’s finest in 2004’s inter-city team game. This year, led by an inspired Elena Hickman (reminding some of Joan of Arc), troops from Cincinnati swarmed to the North, avenged last year’s drubbing by Dayton, and, literally, ate their lunch. The crepe (but not Mrs. Hickman) will be burned at the Fall Cincinnati Sectional

NORTHERN INDIANA — UNIT 154Jim Pelletier, Reporting

The Unit 54 annual meeting was held this year on Sunday morning, June 26, at the Kokomo Sectional. The meeting started at 9:30 A.M. just prior to the Swiss team game. The following is President Jim Davis’s Annual Report.President’s Annual ReportJune 2004 thru May 2005

Our Unit 54, District 8 ran three sectionals and one regional during the last fiscal year.

Many thanks go to the chairmen of these tour-naments, Max Banan at Kokomo, Jim Pelletier and Bob Carteaux at Fort Wayne, John Killeen at South Bend, and Chuck Briggs at Portage. They and their volunteer staffs have put in many hours of effort. We would also like to thank all of our club managers and helpers for their work throughout the year. Together, these people have enabled us to play the game we truly enjoy.

The financial condition of our unit is sound, thanks primarily to the very successful annual Fort Wayne Fall Festival Regional. With this money, we have been been able to subsidize some of our special games at the clubs, especially our STaC (Sectional Tournament at Clubs) events.

Also, last year, we initiated a North American Pair/Grand National team promotion incentive. This year, in addition to paying your entry fees for the District 8 Finals, we will reimburse each qualifying Unit 54 member $00 to help defray travel costs. We hope this incentive will encour-age our players to participate. We have the talent to win the various flighted events and go on to the Nationals, which are also subsidized.

Our clubs participated in several charity events and the unit donated $500 to Bona Vista Rehabilitation Services.

I have selected John and Patricia Killeen as the recipients for the District 8 Goodwill Committee awards. Their fine work and smil-ing faces at the South Bend tournament were appreciated.

Your current Board of Directors are: Presi-dent Jim Davis, Vice-President Jim Pelletier, Secretary-Treasurer Dick Ellis, Past President Bob Carteaux, Recording Secretary Marilyn Weisbach and Area Representatives Jack Spring, Joe Shull, Dorothy Harrell, Jody Castillo, Jim Feinstein, Charles Schultz, Steve Watson, and

— PERIPHERAL VISION, TOO —Bradley Bartol, Reporting

If you were able to solve the little puzzle that I left you with last time, you have both my congratulations and my sincere admiration. Even with the clue I attempted to leave for you, the problem was quite a challenge. Add to that the fact that there was some sort of computer glitch folded into the mix, and the thing was virtually impossible. It seems that my computer and the one used to compile the Midwest Monitor do not so much like each other — the result being that all the bids listed for the hand were incorrect.

My apologies for the snafu. Let’s try this again, shall we? (I promise we’ll all do our best to see to it that this time what I type will actually be what you see.) Also, I won’t leave you hanging this time around. The correct problem — as well as its solution — follow.

As you may remember, South held the following hand, at favorable vulnerability, and his partner was the dealer.

♠ 9 7 3 2♥ 7 5 2♦ 9 8♣ 6 5 4 2

Here is the complete bidding:

NORTH  EAST  SOUTH  WEST♠ 2NT Pass 3♦Pass 4♦ Pass 6♥ Double 7♦ Pass 7NTDouble Pass Pass Pass

With this bidding, which probably makes only marginally more sense than what was published before, the questions are again: What do you lead with the above hand? And what in the world has happened in this auction?

Answer :North was asking for a diamond lead

—dummy’s first bid suit. South was confused by the bidding, and who could blame him? He finally decided on what he saw as the safe choice — his partner’s suit. He tabled the spade nine. Let’s see how that turned out.

Here’s the full deal:  North ♠ J 0 8 6 4 ♥ J 9 4 ♦ A K Q ♣ 9 8

West      East♠ K Q 5 ♠ A♥ A K Q 0 3 ♥ 8 6♦ 5 4 2 ♦ J 0 7 6 3♣ 0 3 ♣ A K Q J 7

  South ♠ 9 7 3 2 ♥ 7 5 2 ♦ 9 8 ♣ 6 5 4 2Answer 2:The bidding. This is where I tried to give you

a hint last time. The title of the column, Peripheral Vision. Had South questioned the opponents about the auction, he may have figured out the lead, though who knows? For me, full disclosure may well have made the dilemma worse.

The reason for the title of the column was this: West never noticed that North had opened the bidding and was therefore operating under the impression that his partner had opened 2NT. His 3♦ bid had been a transfer on the way to a likely slam. 7♦ wasn’t his idea of the best possible contract, so he corrected to 7NT.

East, for her part, was happy with her partner’s choice of diamonds and thought that a game might be in the offing. After the 6♥ call she was attempting to return to what she saw as obviously their best suit.

North felt certain that 6♥ wasn’t a maker and was ready to punish. After the final two bids, his last double was an attempt to tell South what to lead.

The result: East/West +2490, and I’m told a good laugh for all of them. (Though, I have to admit it never seemed to me that South thought this was all that funny. Again, who could blame him? I know all I could think of as I heard the story was that I was glad I wasn’t sitting in his chair that day.)
