Middlefield Prescription Take-BackBy Joe Tucholski, Chief of Police

On Oct. 28 our Department participated in the National Take Back Initiative for prescription drugs. Our department took in 92 pounds of unused prescription drugs that will be destroyed and never end up on the streets. The Middlefield Police Department, 14860 N State Ave. (44062) has a Drug Drop Off Box in our lobby that is accessible to the public 24 hours a day, and we encourage everyone to use the drop box any time. Thank you.

In the now photo, above, you will see that the space is currently occupied by “His Daughter”. Sometime in the 1940s or early 50s, Carl Hofstetter Sr. purchased the grocery store owned by Ernie Patchin and moved the jewelry store that he had purchased from his brother-in-law Leon Shute into this building. Shutes Jewelry Store was located where Middlefield Banks parking lot now sits and was known for his sign out front that read “SHUTE THE JEWELER”. He also purchased the Lunchroom/His Daughter building and along with Pete Popovic who owned the Middlefield Tavern, bricked up the fronts to make it look like one building instead of three separate ones. This building has had many uses over the years including a ladies dress shop, flower shop, and a cigarette shop.

I have been asked to occasionally include some then and now photos in my column. This issue, I have done just that. The two photos above are of a lunchroom type restaurant that was located on East Elm Street, now East High, more than 100 years ago. I’m sure that the place was basically a soup and sandwich place and not a full scale restaurant judging by the interior picture.

Circus Costumes on Display in Middlefield

The Barnum & Bailey Circus may be history, but circus excitement is still alive and well in Middlefield. For three weekends only, the public is invited to view a display of authentic circus costumes from Barnum & Bailey and other circus troupes. To set the stage, the hosts have conjured up a circus-theme setting, and there’s a rumor that a live clown may visit during open hours. A circus-theme raffle will help defray expenses.

The event is hosted by Middlefield Historical Society at the Century Inn Underloft, 14979 S. State Ave. (Route 608). The entire exhibit is on one level and handicapped accessible.

This exciting special exhibit will be open for public viewing from Friday, Nov. 10 through Sunday, Nov. 26 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only. Admission is free, but please make a donation to this non-profit organization.

The magnificent display costumes are on loan to Middlefield Historical Society courtesy of Mark and Debra Miller of Perfect Occasion Costumes and Magic, who recently moved into their new location on North State Avenue in Middlefield.

This one-time-only event will be fun for all ages, so please stop by for a visit.

Fouth-grader Elisabeth M. discusses her opinion about being tardy to school featured on the WVIZ/PBS Ideastream Education program NewsDepth. (MP Photo/CSD)

Student Opinion Featured on PBSKudos to fourth-grader Elisabeth M. who recently had her opinion published and

featured on the WVIZ/PBS Ideastream Education program News Depth. NewsDepth is an award-winning instructional multiple media product that connects students to Ohio’s New Learning Standards. Each week students from across the state submit an opinion on various topics through the program’s Inbox. Elisabeth’s thoughts on being tardy to school were featured on the website for the program’s second episode.

She wrote, “I think there should be a consequence for being tardy to school. The consequence, I believe, should be an extra page of homework for being late to school. I believe this is a wonderful consequence because being late means your teacher may have assigned homework that is very important and for a side dish of knowledge a few extra questions to even it out. I also believe this is a terrific idea because you have missed a little bit of class and will need to make up in some way. The last reason I feel that extra homework is a nice reason, is you missed some of the class which also means you missed out on some learning that helps you stay smart. That is why I feel there should be some form of punishment for being tardy to class.” Elisabeth said she was very excited to hear that her opinion had been selected, adding she worked extremely hard and long, to get her thoughts together on the subject. Way to go Elisabeth!

Hay, Hay, the Gang’s All Here

By Ellie Behman

There is no better way to enjoy a crisp, sunny day in the fall than a hayride.  I wrote about such a day a couple of years ago and here I was, once again, planning another with my daughters, son in law Terry and three great-grandsons.  They are growing like weeds and I wondered if they were too big to enjoy this annual outing, but I was so wrong. Come to think of it, I haven’t outgrown the desire to participate either.

When they were asked where they wanted to go this year, they unanimously chose the same farm we had gone in previous years, proof that tradition even lives in the hearts of the young.  I felt the same way but silently wondered how I would manage climbing onto the large wagon without writhing around like a beached whale.  I silently thought to myself, ‘come on legs, don’t embarrass me now.’  Well I managed to get up, hold onto my dignity and we were soon on our way.

What a joy to sit atop the hay bales, take in the clear, clean air and ride out to the field where literally hundreds of pumpkins dotted the ground.  The kids jumped off the wagon at the first stop and ran quickly to make their choices.  The biggest kid,  Krissy, jumped down and grabbed the first pumpkin she saw.  We laughed as Terry quipped, “You are a premature pumpkin picker.”  Guess she let the excitement of the day cloud her need to be selective when spotting the perfect one.

As for me, I decided to stay on the wagon and watch the others.  Our driver told us to shout out if we spotted a pumpkin we just had to have and he would stop.  Well, shout I did and Terry was kind enough to hop off and bring me a pumpkin.  Great to have someone nearby to rely on.  After several stops we made it back to the barn, pumpkins and children (and Grama) bouncing all over the wagon.

Back at the barn the kids (and I include Krissy) ran to the soy bean box where they enjoyed burying one another.  They then ran through the hay bale maze, and went on a ride inside little carts.  There we were, all ages, but enjoying the day together in the same way.

I believe the Lord set it up so we could enjoy each other’s company on a bright sunny fall day. I feel Krissy (my 50-year-old kid)  had the best time of all. When I got home, I smiled to myself as I removed my tennis shoes and found a little soy bean stuck under my toes.  Another reminder for sure of life’s most important moments.  I heard that when you bring home sand from a beach it means you will return again to that very place.  Hopefully that little soy bean will lure us back again next year.Ellie, a freelance writer for more than 40 years, has written more than 400 articles. She and her husband spend as much time as possible at their cabin where they enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area. Looking for a Good Home“Cindy”

Meet Cindy, an adorable 14-week-old kitten. This little girl was rescued after being found outdoors. Cindy came to me pretty sick, but with some medicine and lots of love, she is now ready for her forever home. Cindy is spayed, vaccinated and wormed. She tested negative for leukemia, but positive for FIV. FIV is a cat specific virus. You cannot catch FIV. Cindy is due for a repeat bloodwork in about 1 month, which will be taken care of thru my rescue.

Cindy is an absolute delight and is good with all my cats and my dog. It is my hope that she will retest negative for FIV. But if by some chance she does not, I am hopeful that she will have many healthy and happy years ahead of her. To meet Cindy, please contact Kathy Deptola, Animal Rescue, 440-862-0610, [email protected]. Cindy
