The Deer Lakes team of sophomores AbigailBuechel, Carley Hammers, Julia Hollibaugh, andAnna Solomon; and junior Jacob McCaskey took firstplace in the 18th Annual Bayer InternationalMarketing Competition held March 9 at theUniversity of Pittsburgh.

The panel of judges rated Deer Lakes’ presenta-tion ahead of those from student teams representingeight other area high schools, including NorthAllegheny, Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair, SouthFayette, Pine-Richland, Cardinal Wuerl NorthCatholic, Southern Lehigh, and CAPA.

The project, which began in the fall, requires agreat deal of research by each team and is designed tohelp them learn key skills and how to work in a groupconstruct. In addition to the traditional market fac-tors, students must also gain an appreciation for con-cepts like business etiquette, distribution logistics, advertising standards and norms, pricing, packaging, and a host of other considerations.

Marketing CompetitionContinued from page 16

Past competitions have marketed an array of dif-ferent Bayer products to such countries as: China,India, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Russia, Indonesia,Switzerland, Italy, South Africa, Kenya, Poland andBrazil. This year’s marketing campaign focused onCosta Rica to advertise the product AspirinaAdvanced.

Margaret Carlson, a retired teacher in the district, mentored the group along with Spanish teacher JoshDestein. She has led many Deer Lakes student teamsover the years and said the purpose of the partnershipis to teach students the necessary skills for doing busi-ness in the international marketplace.

“The nations we are marketing to change eachyear and so too do the products we are selling,” saidCarlson. “However, the central themes remain thesame. It is all about learning to cut through culturaland language barriers to successfully market a prod-uct there.”

In addition to their regular ¡ork with Carlson andDestein, the Deer Lakes students have also participat-ed in a series of video interviews and teleconferencesfrom experts in the field including practitioners in thatmarketplace and business professors from theInternational School of Business from the Universityof Pittsburgh.

Carlson, who taught French and Spanish at DeerLakes for 29 years and is now an adjunct professor atLa Roche College and on the CulturalCommunications Alliance (CCA) Board, which spon-sors the competition, said that it is very important thatstudents have completed at least one foreign languagecourse.

“We want these students to get the most they canout of this project and to do that we feel they need tohave some background in studying other cultures andlanguages,” she said.

Destein, who always preaches to his students theimportance of thinking as a global citizen in anincreasingly competitive world, said he wasimpressed with all of the presentations. “We’re talkingabout a group of mostly sophomores and one juniordoing graduate school level work,”said Destein, who is in his first year as a sponsor. “Idon’t know how anyone could watch those presenta-tions and not come away extremely impressed?”

The Bayer Corporation Mentorship Program, which began in 1999, is sponsored by the CCA inpartnership with Chorus Call, the University ofPittsburgh’s International Business Center, GlobalStudies and the David Berg Center for Ethics andLeadership. It is underwritten by the BayerCorporation, the U.S. subsidiary of the German com-pany Bayer AG, with core competencies in health-care, agriculture and high-tech polymer materials.
