UWA Student Chapter Vision: “To develop

knowledge about the mining industry beyond

the classroom and provide and establish links

between students and the industry”

Mid-Year Report 2008

We have begun 2008 full steam ahead, hosting a number of successful

functions and initiatives and forwarding our vision to develop knowl-

edge about the mining industry beyond the classroom and provide

and establish links between students and the industry.

Student Contributions

As with all volunteer groups, it is difficult to ask students to work towards

goals, when there is very little reward for themselves personally. Having

said that, a number of members of our Chapter have assisted us time

and time again, and worked to ensure our activities are successful - the

list is much too long, but I would like to thank them for their assistance

over the past 6 months.

Industry Contributions

I would like to recognise our financial sponsors for their support:

Agnew Gold Mine (Goldfields), BHP Billiton Nickel West, Sandvik,

Downing Teal, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Gemcom Software Australia, Ox-

iana Limited, Entec, AMC Consultants, SRK Consulting, Runge Limited,

EPC Australia, BOSFA and Mining People International.

While the list may appear very long, each of these companies makes a

valuable contribution to UWA students entering the minerals industry.

Industry support of our activities is vital, and allow us to continue with

our objective of establishing links with the industry. In the latter half of

2008, we hope to continue our success in linking our students with our

generous sponsors.

I would also like to thank our benefactors in The AusIMM Perth Branch

for their support of all WA tertiary students entering the minerals indus-

try. Finally, I would also like to thank those who act as our primary

points of contacts within each company - you are the unsung heroes of

the UWA Student Chapter.

“This year has been a busy year for all with

many social and networking events such as

paintballing and our Beer, Pizza and Sausage

Night, as well as field trips, conferences and the

Mining Games. While those on the UWA Chap-

ter committee in their final year have been busy

with their theses and organising events, those

in their second and third years of study have

pitched in to lend a hand wherever possible and

have made our lives a lot easier.

Our successful sponsorship drive and packed

calendar of events is testament to the large ef-

fort put in by many of the students involved in

the AusIMM at UWA. This year I have been in-

volved in the organisation of the Beer, Pizza

and Sausage night, as well as the Chapter

Shirts and team uniforms for the National Min-

ing Games.

For the rest of 2008, I look forward to arranging

many more UWA AusIMM events and continu-

ing my contributions to the monthly Perth

Branch AusIMM Newsletter.”

In focus: Ryan Brennan (Sponsorship Coor-

dinator)

“Sponsorship for 2008 has been highly success-

ful with fourteen companies generously sup-

porting our Chapter activities Our sponsors

represent the some of the best in the industry,

from: owner/operators, contractors, consultants,

services, software and recruitment companies,

giving our Chapter a solid support base for

2008.

In the second half of 2008 I look forward to or-

ganising the 2009 sponsorship drive, broaden-

ing our sponsorship base and working with the

Chapter Committee to ensure our sponsors re-

ceive the benefits they deserve as financial

sponsors of the UWA Student Chapter of The

AusIMM.”

In focus: Daniel Wright (Treasurer)

“Our expenditure and activities have been in line

with our vision to develop knowledge about the

mining industry beyond the classroom and pro-

vide and establish links between students and

the industry.

This has been made possible with the financial

support from company sponsorships, which is

directly attributable to the hard work from

the sponsorship committee and the President,

who singlehandedly coordinated the company

sponsorship negotiations during the summer

vacation 2007/8 while university was closed.

I look forward to finalising the budget review,

and presenting the results to financial sponsors.”

Mid-Year Report 2008

Sponsorship 2008

Sponsorship Committee:

2008 is the first year we have used a sponsor-

ship committee to handle our sponsorship en-

deavours.

Realising it is difficult to maintain meaningful

contact with many people at the same time, we

assigned several companies to each student.

In addition to their vacation work commitments,

these students maintained contact with each

company.

The Sponsorship Committee for 2008 is:

Ryan Brennan - Coordinator (5)

Desmond Koh (16)

Mincka Lim (5)

Jess Metcalfe (5)

Dan Page (5)

Aurimas Karosas (1)

Their efforts have allowed us to exceed our

sponsorship total by over 50%.

Ryan Brennan, Sponsorship Coordinator:

“Each member of the Sponsorship Committee

worked extremely well in keeping contact with

their assigned companies.

The use of a sponsorship committee was a

great success, allowing each member to deal

more individually with any queries from their

contacts.

I would like to thank Desmond Koh, who filled

my role whilst I was out of contact on-site during

summer, and the rest of the sponsorship com-

mittee for their efforts; Jess Metcalfe, Dan

Page, Mincka Lim and Aurimas Karosas.”

2008 Sponsors:

It is important to us that the contributions of our

financial sponsors be recognised. Their gener-

osity provides students at UWA with opportuni-

ties that would not exist without our Chapter and

their assistance. I invite students and industry

members alike to visit the following companies

and see the products and services they offer the

industry.

The UWA Student Chapter of The AusIMM vi-

sion is: “to develop knowledge about the mining

industry beyond the classroom, and provide and

establish links between students and the indus-

try.”

This gives us a clear justification and direction

for our activities and endeavours. We achieve

our vision through a number of company pres-

entations, field trips, and social events.

TU Bergakademie Freiberg Visit - March

Organiser: Desmond Koh

Visit from German mining students in March,

with presentations from each university, offering

an opportunity to learn about the differences in

Mid-Year Report 2008

Outlook

In the latter half of 2008, we will continue to or-

ganise events designed to connect students

with members of the industry. In particular, we

will be ensuring that our sponsors are given

ample opportunity to meet with students of our

Chapter.

New Leader’s Conference - June

Organiser: Desmond Koh

We will be attending the New Leader’s Confer-

ence and National Mining Games in Wollon-

gong on July 15. The conference theme is “A

Mining Planet - Australia’s Role in The Interna-

tional Minerals Industry”.

The support of the industry has provided the

opportunity to send 22 students (two full teams)

to compete in the National Mining Games. We

look forward to meeting our peers from around

Australia, and broadening our awareness of the

industry with the conference.

Company and Professional Development

Presentations - August/September

Organiser: Dan Page

We are hoping to organise company presenta-

tions for our remaining sponsors. These presen-

tations give students a unique opportunity to

learn about the company and meet its represen-

tatives.

Local Field Trips - July/August

Organiser: Jess Metcalfe

Oxiana Limited have generously invited our stu-

dents back to their Golden Grove Operation in

July. Golden Grove hosted a visit in 2007 and

have gone to great lengths to ensure an enjoy-

able and educational visit awaits students.

In addition, we are organising trips to other WA

mine sites, including Newmont’s Boddington

Gold Mine.

Local field trips give students exposure to West

Australian mining, and allow them to expand

upon the knowledge learned in the classroom.

Int. Field Trip (New Zealand) - November

Organiser: Ben Hames

Students will be visiting New Zealand to gain

exposure to mining and geology in an interna-

tional context. The trip is a combined effort be-

tween the UWA AusIMM and the UWA SEG

Chapters, and will be visiting Waihi Gold Mine

and a number of other interesting locations.

The change was made from Canada due to lo-

gistical issues, and the fantastic geological and

mining opportunities awaiting students, just a

stone’s throw across the Tasman.

Social Networking Functions

In addition, we will be organising a number of

events, including BBQs, Beer and Pizza Nights,

the End of Year Function, and our Chapter elec-

tions.

Social functions allow students to meet mem-

bers of the industry in a amiable, social atmos-

phere. Although, there is a social element, we

do stress the networking component greatly.

The fantastic industry support we have received

to date is an indication that our events are

achieving their purpose.

Chapter Elections - September

Chapter elections will be held in early Septem-

ber, allowing for a complete handover between

the incoming and outgoing committee.

Mid-Year Report 2008

Budget Review

Strong industry support for 2008, coupled with signifi-

cant savings in semester one led to the generation of

a positive financial position for second half of 2008.

Due to savings in first semester, the possibility of

budget surplus has been realised. A continuing

budget review will be conducted through the month of

July to ensure funds are distributed appropriately

amongst events which represent value to both mem-

bers of the Chapter and industry sponsors.

Outcomes of this ongoing budget review have yielded

the following positive outcomes:

6 extra students attending the New Leader’s

Conference

More networking opportunities for all students

(including company presentations, BBQs and

other social networking functions)

The additional field trips (including Boddington

Gold Mine and Oxiana’s Golden Grove)

Total expenditure of $61,885 for the calendar year of

2008.
