“Whole Lot Of Shaking Going On!” at November MVCABy Lynna Harrison

The Mid Valley Claims Asso-ciation was treated to a very com-prehensive presentation entitled “Whole Lot Of Shaking Going On!” from Mr. Michael Brown, CPCU, CCRA, Property Depart-ment Manager for Golden Bear Insurance. Mr. Brown brought to light re-minders of the devastation that

happens, how, as an adjuster, your awareness will assist your client during a disaster, as well as discussion about various magnitudes of quakes. The room at Papa-pavlo’s was filled to capacity, with a rath-er boisterous crowd.Mr. Brown explained that the measure of Earthquakes has not actu-ally been done on the commonly known “Richter Scale” since about 1970. Scientists now use the “Moment Magnitude” scale (abbreviated as MMS; denoted as MW or M). Similar to the old system, MMS is used by seismologists to measure the size of earthquakes in terms of the energy released, but allows for measures outside the boundaries of the Richter Scale. The “magnitude” of a temblor is based on the seismic moment of the earthquake, which he explained is equal to the rigidity of the Earth multiplied by the average amount of slip on the fault, and the size of the area that slipped. The scale was developed in the 1970s to succeed the 1930s-era Richter magnitude scale (ML), which was deemed limited in scope. Even though the formulas are different, the new scale retains the fa-miliar continuum of magnitude values defined by the older one. The MMS is now the scale used to estimate magnitudes for all modern large earthquakes by the United States Geological Survey.Mr. Brown shared a series of slides from various events, illustrating effectively different types of quakes, as well as the extent of devasta-tion depending on various factors.

The 2011 Tohoku earth-quake, for example, struck offshore of Japan, along a subduction zone where two of Earth’s tectonic plates collide. In a sub-duction zone, he said, one plate slides beneath another into the mantle, the hotter layer beneath the crust. The great plates stick and slip, causing earthquakes. East of Japan, the Pacific plate dives beneath the overriding Eurasian plate. The temblor completely released centuries of built up stress between the two tectonic plates, a recent study found.Less than an hour after the earthquake, the

MVCA President Deena Lucero thanked guest speaker Michael Brown for his very informative earthquake presentation.

first of many tsunami waves hit Japan’s coastline. The tsunami waves reached run-up heights (how far the wave surges inland above sea level) of up to 133 feet and traveled inland as far as 6 miles. The quake actually shifted the Earth on its axis between 4 and 10 degrees. He discussed the devastating 7.0M quake that flattened Haiti in January 2010. Less than two months later, a far more vicious temblor, measuring in at 8.0M - five times as strong as the one in Haiti - hit Chile. While devastation was still severe, the comparison between the two was staggering. Some 600 lives were lost in the Chilean quake, while some 220,000 people died in the Haitian disaster.Mr. Brown also talked about the South Napa earthquake in and around the city of Napa, California on August 24 this year. Measuring in at 6.0 on the Moment Magnitude scale, this temblor caused some $400 million in property damage, but the loss of life was next to none.Mr. Brown also touched on the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, and talked about the San Andreas Faultline, as surrounding smaller faults. At 6.9M, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake occurred in northern California on October 17 at 5:04 p.m. local time. The shock was centered in a sparsely populated area approximately 10 mi (16 km) northeast of Santa Cruz on a section of the San Andreas Fault System and was named for the nearby Loma Prieta peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The shock was responsible for 63 deaths and 3,757 injuries in the affected areas. Mr. Brown’s accompanying slide show presentation drove home the need for everyone to maintain readiness and awareness, to be prepared for the next “big one”. The depth of information he shared provided a valuable learning experience for all present.Announcements at the meeting included one from Jack Corry of Water, Smoke and Mold Removal, who is the incoming President for the 2015 The Claims Conference of Northern California. Jack announced the dates as August 11-12, 2015. Please note the dates! The theme this year will be “Hot August Claims”.
