A Spectator’s Guide to Competitive Ballroom Dancing

If you are new to DanceSport competitions, welcome to the energetic world of DanceSport! We are so happy that you could join us this weekend.

The following brief explanation is designed to help you understand the events you are watching. A dance competition presents an opportunity for competitive dancers to demonstrate their skills and, based upon the judges’ scores, compare their performances to those of other dancers. A typical ballroom dance competition consists of events in various Dance Styles, Skill Levels and Age Classifications. As a general guide:

Dance StylesBallroom dance competitions comprise two main categories of dancing: International Style and American Style. International dances are taught and danced around the world, but they are only called “International” Style here in the United States. American Style is unique to the United States, although it is gaining in popularity in other countries. There are additional sub-categories of dance styles, as described below.

International Style

The Standard dances (referred to as “Ballroom” dances outside the United States) are Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep. This is a classic style of dancing where couples remain in ‘closed hold’ (man’s raised left hand holds woman’s right hand; man’s right hand on woman’s left shoulder blade, bodies touching). The style is characterized by sweeping movement, emotions, body flight, control and precision. International Standard is danced in elegant attire–men frequently wear tail suits or similar evening attire while the ladies wear long full skirts or ball gowns.

The Latin dances include Cha Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive. Inspired by Latin-American music and traditional dances, the International Latin is rhythmic and energetic. The dances are highly stylized, and feature fast, precise footwork as well as undulating body rhythms. Clothing for this style is more ‘costume’ than for the Standard, and usually is more revealing for both ladies and gentlemen.

American Style

The Smooth dances include Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz. Dancers in this style are permitted to release each other and dance in positions other than the ‘closed hold’ of International Standard. American Smooth is often described as the style of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

The Rhythm dances include Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero, Merengue and Mambo. Often considered to be more ‘street-based’ than the International Latin, American Rhythm is danced to slightly different rhythms with an earthier interpretation than the Latin.

Proficiency Levels“Proficiency level” refers to the performance skill of a couple, which derives from a combination of their training, competition experience, and natural ability. Couples generally begin at the Bronze syllabus level and work their way up through Silver and Gold. Couples competing within a given syllabus level may not dance figures from a higher proficiency level. Higher proficiency dancers may use figures from their own level or any level below.

Beyond syllabus, there are three open levels: Novice, Pre-Championship,and Championship. In the open levels, couples generally dance fully choreographed routines combining “upgraded” syllabus figures with original choreography.

Couples advance levels as their proficiency improves. USA Dance rules permit couples competing in Bronze, Silver, and/or Gold to enter Novice events as well.

Age ClassificationUSA Dance competitions offer nine (9) age divisions for competition. In conjunction with proficiency levels, these age categories further guarantee that dancers compete fairly by ensuring couples dance against others who are close in age.

Age Classification Description

Pre-Teen I Reach 9th birthday or less in the calendar year

Pre-Teen II Reach 10th or 11th birthday in the calendar year

Junior I Reach 12th or 13th birthday in the calendar year

Junior II Reach 14th or 15th birthday in the calendar year

Youth Reach 16th, 17th, or 18th birthday in the calendar year

Adult Reach 19th birthday or more in the calendar year

Senior I Reach 35th birthday or more in the calendar year

Senior II Reach 45th birthday or more in the calendar year

Senior III Reach 55th birthday or more in the calendar year

Senior IV Reach 65th birthday or more in the calendar year

Judging The judges, or adjudicators, are certified through various organizations, as well as being experienced competitors and instructors.

Couples are judged on a variety of factors, including technical skill, musicality, floorcraft, and more. Since adjudicators represent different cultural backgrounds and dance styles, a panel consists of many judges of different backgrounds to ensure fairness while judging an event. Typically, syllabus events have at least five judges, while open events have at least seven (though usually more).

Depending on the number of entries in an event, competitors may compete in a series of elimination rounds (1st round, 2nd round, quarter-final and semi-final). A final round usually contains six couples, but may have as many as eight.

Audience ParticipationAudience appreciation is always very welcome to the competing couples. Audience participation is not only allowed, it is encouraged.

Remember: the more you cheer, the better they dance! If this is your first ballroom competition, you may wonder what the appropriate ways are to show your support for the dancers as they compete on the floor.

Be Loud! You want the dancers to be able to hear you over the music!

Be Specific! If you know your favorite dancers’ names, shout them out. If you don’t, shout out their numbers (displayed on the gentlemen’s back). They may not acknowledge your call, but they will hear it and it will inspire them.

Be Generous!Remember that everyone out there is giving it everything they’ve got. Feel free to cheer for all the dancers who are giving it their best, whether you know them or not.

Kay Teague, Mistress of Ceremonies (Maryland)Kay is a former dancesport competitor, both in the UK and USA, and her passion for ballroom dancing has never waned. She has served in several positions with the Mid-Eastern and National Chapters for the better part of 3½ decades (since joining USABDA in 1979), including as the National Competition Chair and – for many years – as the National Vice President of the Youth/College Network (YCN). Kay was instrumental in developing (and in many cases founding) collegiate ballroom dance clubs on more than 20 campuses nationwide, and guiding the YCN committee members to reach out to support and assist dozens more. Local programs were augmented at The Catholic University of America (CUA), and installed at the University of Maryland (UMCP), Georgetown University, George Washington University and American University, and others. She established what became annual Collegiate DanceSport Competitions on many campuses in several states, including CUA and UMCP, as well as the U.S. National Collegiate DanceSport Championships currently held annually in conjunction with the Ohio Star Ball. She has served as a Mistress of Ceremonies, Chair of Judges and Scrutineer at National, Chapter, Regional and Collegiate competitions, and has scrutineered in the UK. As a Board member of the Mid-Eastern Chapter, Kay participates in the organization of the Mid-Atlantic Championships, an NQE, and in chapter social dances. Kay says “to have the opportunity to introduce people to the wonder of ballroom dancing makes my heart sing, and is such a privilege.”
