Name: __________________________________ APES Mr. CrisciLab: IMAGINARY CONTINENT Date: _________ Pre Lab Questions:
1. As latitude increases, temperature ______________________.
2. As elevation increases, temperature _____________________.3. List the four factors that affect the climate of a region and circle the one that is most influential.
4. Describe what conditions are like where air rises:
5. Describe what the conditions are like where air sinks:
6. What latitudes are places where air is rising and low pressure occurs?
7. What two variables are used in a climograph?
Part 1: You have been studying the effects of various factors on a location’s climate. You will now design a continent and then discuss the climate at each of the cities.Procedure:
1. Divide the whiteboard up evenly with 7 latitude lines.2. Label the middle line as the equator 0°.3. Label the following lines at an interval of 30. Be sure to put on a degrees symbol and N to represent
north latitudes (Example 30o N) and do the same for the southern latitudes.4. Now you can draw your continent (but do not draw any land above the 90°N or S).5. Be sure to include the items below in your design.
a. At least one mountain range located on the west coast of your continent.b. Name your continent and mountain range.c. Draw global wind pattern arrows on the map (Diagram 9 in your verbal quiz packet).
Remember to put the curve in due to the Coriolis Effect.d. Draw in cool ocean currents descending from the poles to the equator on the west coast and
draw in warm ocean currents on the east coast starting from the equator moving toward the poles.
e. Add Highs and Lows to the map at the appropriate locations.f. Add the 8 biomes below to your continent (you must name them on your cards). Also
correctly, place the animal and plants cards that are associated with each biome:A. One biome with a marine and temperate climate (Deciduous forest)B. One biome with a continental and temperate climate (Grassland)C. One biome on the leeward of a mountain (Desert)D. One biome on the windward of a mountain, at a high temperate latitude (55 o+) (Taiga)E. One biome within the southern dry but still has enough moisture from scrub type plants
(Chaparral)F. One biome located within a tropical zone (ITCZ) (Rainforest)G. One biome in an extreme northern tundra region (Arctic Tundra)H. One biome located between the grassland and the tropical rainforest, this biome is
known as an ecotone (Savanna)Part 2: Label each box with the correct biome: Chaparral, temperate deciduous forest, grassland, desert,
Quiz(14pts)
Completeness(10pts)
GRADE:
tropical rainforest, savanna, tundra, boreal (taiga) forest.
Part 3: Graph the average precipitation using a BAR graph and graph the average temperature using a LINE graph. Then determine what biome you think this is based on the data you graphed.

KEY FEATURES nutrient-poor
and acidic soils because of falling needles
also called taiga only in northern
hemisphere moderate
productivity
KEY FEATURES thin, nutrient-
poor soils because of leaching by winter rains
climate described as Mediterranean
periodic wildfires
KEY FEATURES soils rich in
minerals but poor in organic material
low resistance and resilience
low diversity very low
productivity
KEY FEATURES poorly developed
soils permafrost found at high
latitudes or high altitudes
short growing season, low productivity
KEY FEATURES fertile soils also called
pampas, prairies, or steppes
dry, windy conditions cause fires that prevent tree growth productive
KEY FEATURES fertile soil
compacted by grazing animals
seasons due to moving low pressure belt
large herds of migrating animals follow seasonal precipitation
KEY FEATURES fertile soils, rich
in organic material from seasonal decomposition of leaves
long growing season
moderately high productivity
KEY FEATURES thin, nutrient-
poor soils rapid
decomposition and quick uptake of nutrients
“seasons” depend on location of low pressure belt
most productive land biome
