Real World Experience
Microsoft Teams Today (May 2019):
• Included in every Office 365 Enterprise Plan

• Well Suited today for it’s primary use case “project based collaboration” and Knowledge workers.
• This is the majority of use today

• You can now bring your own numbers for Cloud Auto Attendants and Call Queues (but note new licence requirement)
• IP Phones
• 3PIP/SfB phones via Microsoft cloud gateway
• Native Microsoft Teams phones from AudioCodes, Crestron, Yealink. Poly later in year

What is happening with Skype for Business?
What’s happening with Skype for Business?
• Microsoft publicly positioned Microsoft Teams as the future single client/experience for Office 365
• From Oct. 1st 2018, new 500 seats or less Office 365 customers will be Microsoft Teams and will
have no Skype for Business Online.
• SfB Online has no End of Life date there is no forced move. Automatic upgrades are happening.
Customers have full admin control over this process
• SfB Server 2019 was released October 2018. Very limited new functionality (Cloud voicemail, cloud
analytics, easier to move users to Teams)
• Skype for Business Server 2015 Mainstream Support ends 2020, SfBS 2019 Mainstream Support
ends 2023, both extended support until 2025

The 5 “User Modes”

I Only Want a Single Client SfB or Teams:
SfB Only (Teams turned completely off)
Teams Only (SfB in meeting join only mode)

Side by Side
1 Islands
Know Where You Are Coming From
• In all scenarios Teams adds new collaboration abilities that need change management and adoption
SfB for Instant
Messaging
SfB for IM
and Meetings
SfB for IM,
Meetings and Voice
Islands - Full Side by Side (with feature overlap)
• Enable Teams with broadest possible functionality
• Allow users to experience benefits of Teams and experience Teams capabilities soonest
• Each service operates independently, without interoperability
• All users must run both Skype for Business and Teams clients at all times until they
become Teams Only
+
Phased Upgrade (no overlap)
• Starting point: user is in Skype for Business with UC functionality
• Introduce Teams to the user, without UC functionality
• All calls & chat continue to land in and originate from Skype for Business
• User can explore net new functionality of Teams (Channels, notifications, files, apps…)
• Switch UC functionality over to Teams
• Non-upgraded users and upgraded users rely on interop to communicate
For on-prem & hybrid orgs, or organizations that want to minimize multiple communication apps
+
Meetings First
+
• Start state: user only has SfB with UC functionality
• Introduce Teams to the user, without UC functionality (as previously described)
• Adopt Teams Meetings First: switch Meetings scheduling functionality from Skype for Business to Teams
• Up to this point, all calls and chats initiate from and land in Skype for Business, no need for interop yet
• At some point in the future, upgrade fully to Teams-Only Teams
• Chat & Calling between Upgraded (Teams-Only) users and all other users relies on interop
For on-prem & hybrid orgs that will move to Meetings First before going to Teams Only
+
Meetings First Experience
Initiative to move meetings workload to Teams first
Keep running Skype for
Business Server for chat
and calling
• Address meetings first,
Enterprise Voice and
Chat next
• Simplified, streamlined
meetings-centric Teams
experience
Meet in Teams
• Provide best, richest,
complete meetings
experience
• Include meeting rooms,
devices, services (Cloud
Video Interoperability)
Skype & Teams Co-Exist
• Your Teams and Skype for
Business clients play nice
with each other
• Your Skype for Business
meetings are now Teams
meetings
• Full IT story –
provisioning, reporting
Interop:
How do Teams
and SfB users
talk to each
other during
upgrade?
You must be SfB Online or setup for Hybrid (interop is routing via SFBO)
You get basic P2P (user to user) chat, voice and video calling (no emojis)
To do multiparty (more than 2 people) Chat/Call/Video/Conference, it must be on
either Microsoft Teams or SfB
If a SfB mode user, you can join using Teams on mobile, desktop client or via Web
Browser (no plugin)
If a Teams Mode user, you can join using the SfB client in meeting only mode,
or via the SfB Web client (plugin)
In an Escalation scenario, whoever initiates the conference will dictate the platform

What is next for your organisation?
What’s next for your business?
• This really is cultural change for users, not just replacing phones and conferencing
• This is a technical change, you may be moving form relatively static internal servers to a cloud service, new operating model
• This is a commercial change, new service and billing models, change in TCO model
• If you have never has SfB, “Teams Only” mode from day one is great
• If you have SfB, consider the right “user mode”/path for your business
• There is value in Collab Only, Meetings First or Islands for the right use case
• Business Requirements First
