What is it?
A group of three blind menencountered an elephant andhis trainer.
“We have never met anelephant before,” the mensaid.” Maybe we touch it sothat we may know what anelephant is?”
“Of course!” The trainer said, and the men approached theelephant.
The first man walked into the side of theelephant, felt up, and own, and side to sideand exclaimed “ I have encountered a wall.
An elephant is a large warm wall!”
The second man had walked up to theelephant’s leg. He said “Are you crazy? Thisis no wall, but round, and sturdy, like a treetrunk, or a pillar.
An elephant is a kind of tree!”
The third hadencountered the trunkand said “You are bothwrong.
An elephant is a largeserpent, like a python, but without bones!”
The trainer intervened”“Gentlemen, you areeach right, in your ownway, but also all of youare totally wrong. Anelephant is neither wall, nor tree, nor serpent,or even bottle brush.”
What is an Elephant?
“It is a vast creature of many parts, some ofwhich resemble the familiar things you haveperceived. But to truly understand theelephant you must expand your perception, and approach not just the piece you arefamiliar with, but the entire animal.”
SharePoint helps you to:Find the information you need quickly
Link to that information to stay current
Share the information you have with others
Do all that through standard tools that folks already know
• SharePoint does those things by creating a web site for yourbusiness that integrates with Microsoft Office applications:mainly, Word, Excel, and Outlook. From a user’s perspective, itsjust like using the internet: click on links to go to a new page, search on a phrase to find something, and so on. What’s unique isthe way SharePoint integrates Office documents, tasks lists, calendars. Email alerts, and other features in a way to simplifythe flow of work.

Sharing files with
others is essential to
getting things done
nowadays.
But just how should
you share files?
You could e-mail them to people or put them on a
network folder somewhere.
But if your company has a Windows SharePoint
Services 3.0 site or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server
2007, the best way to share files is to use a
document library.
A SharePoint
document library is a
place on a site where
you can create,
collect, and update
files with others.
In this example, employees at Contoso Pharmaceuticals
are using a document library called “Shared
Documents.”
They have added files to the library, and now people
can make changes to them.
A SharePoint
document library is a
place on a site where
you can create,
collect, and update
files with others.
Those changes will be stored in the library — not on
their own computers.
And, because the library is on a Web site, other people
can easily access the files using a Web browser,
provided they have the permissions to do so.
You might be thinking,
“Why not just e-mail
a file to my
colleagues or use a
network folder to
share files?”
Because SharePoint
document libraries
provide more control.
There are many ways they do this:
• Checkout: You can check out a file to reserve it for
your use so that others cannot change it while you
are working on it.
• Versions: A library can also be set up to store
previous versions for archiving purposes.
You might be thinking,
“Why not just e-mail
a file to my
colleagues or use a
network folder to
share files?“
Because SharePoint
document libraries
provide more control.
There are many ways they do this:
• Alerts: You can set up e-mail alerts so that you are
notified if a file is changed by someone else.
• Search: Libraries can also be set up so that they are
searchable.
