Microsoft ® PowerPoint ® 2010 Animations & Transitions SPOTLIGHT GUIDE T ABLE O F C ONTENTS Getting Started with Animations The Animation Pane is your central hub for organizing and customizing animations on a slide, replacing the Custom Animation pane from PowerPoint 2007. To open the Animation Pane: under the tab, click the Animation Pane button. To close the Animation Pane, click the button again. Always ask yourself the following when adding animations or other effects to a presentation: Will the effect reinforce the content, or distract from it? Is the effect gratuitous? Is it unnecessary? Is it merely included to show off or demonstrate proficiency? Do your effects follow internal logic? If similar elements are animated differently, there should be a good reason for this. PowerPoint 2010 enables you to add animations to a number of presentation objects, including images, text, charts, and SmartArt graphics — choose from provided animation themes or customize your own! In PowerPoint 2010, you can now copy and paste animation effects directly from one object to another. You can also call audience attention to specific elements with sound effects, or punctuate your slide transitions with automated timing or visual flair. In PowerPoint 2010, you can now copy and paste animation effects directly from one object to another. You can also call audience attention to specific elements with sound effects, or punctuate your slide transitions with automated timing or visual flair.

2Basic AnimationAdding an Animation to a Slide1. On the Slide Thumbnail Pane, select the slide you want to add animation to.

Select the object you want to animate.2. Under the tab, choose an effect from the Animation gallery. Click

the icon in the bottom-right of the gallery to open a window with more options.

Tip: You can also add a new animation by clicking Add Animation in the Advanced Animation group. This can be useful for adding multiple animations to the same object.

Note: Animations in PowerPoint 2010 are color-coded by function. Green icons represent entrance animations — how elements are introduced to a slide. Yellow icons represent emphasis animations — how elements change to attract attention. Red icons represent exit animations — how elements are removed from a slide. Line-based icons represent motion paths.3. If the Animation Pane is open (see Getting Started with Animations, page 1),

you will see the new animation added to the list.

To delete an animation: on the Animation Pane, click to select the animation you want to delete and press the DELETE key. Alternatively, right-click the animation and choose Remove from the menu.

Customizing AnimationsOn the Animation Pane, select the animation you want to modify.To change animation effect options: under the tab, click the Effect Options button in the Animation group. Available options will differ depending on the type of object and animation selected.To change animation timing: under the tab, make changes as needed in the Timing group.

Working with Multiple AnimationsAnimations on a slide will play in order from top to bottom — that is, animation 1 will play first, followed by animation 2, and so forth.To re-order animations on a slide: on the Animation Pane, click and drag an animation to a new location in the list. Alternatively, click to select the animation you want to re-order, then click the Re-Order arrow buttons at the bottom of the pane to move the animation’s order as needed.Tip: You can also re-order animations with the Move Earlier and Move Later buttons in the Timing group, under the tab.

Using the TimelineWhen working with slides featuring multiple animations, it can be helpful to refer to the timeline. The timeline visually represents playback information — when each animation starts, how long it will play, and when it will end — in relation to other animations on the slide.To display the timeline: on the Animation Pane, click to select any animation. Click the drop-down box and choose Show Advanced Timeline from the menu. To hide the timeline, click the drop-down box again and choose Hide Advanced Timeline.

Making Changes to Multiple AnimationsOn the Animation Pane, hold the CTRL key and click to select multiple animations. Any changes you make will be applied to all selected animations.

Working with the Animation PainterNew in PowerPoint 2010, the animation painter copies all animations from one object to another.1. Click to select the object you want to copy animations from.2. Under the tab, click Animation Painter in the Advanced

Animation group. Your mouse cursor will change to a paintbrush icon.3. Click on any other object to apply the selected animations to it. The

Animation Pane will update accordingly, and your mouse cursor will return to normal.

Tip: You can also apply painted animations to objects on other slides.

Applying Painted Animations to Multiple ObjectsIf you want to apply painted animations to multiple objects, you can save time by double-clicking Animation Painter instead of single-clicking. In this mode, your cursor will not return to normal after applying animations, allowing you to continue applying the painted animations to other objects. Click

Animation Painter again to stop painting animations.

Animations

Active animationHover your mouse cursor over any effect to preview it.

Click to access advanced animation options.

Click to play all animations on the slide.

Click on an animation to select it.

Choose when the animation will play. Selecting With Previous or After Previous from the drop-down menu will link the start time to the previous animation on the slide.

Choose how long the animation will take to play from start to finish.

Choose how much time to delay before the animation actually plays.

Timeline information

Click to scroll backwards or forwards through the timeline.

Click to zoom in or out on the timeline.

3Advanced Animations

Accessing All Available AnimationsWhile the Animation gallery displays a fair selection of animations, you may wish to browse all available options.1. Click to select the slide object you want to animate.2. Under the tab, click Add Animation in the Advanced

Animation group.3. At the bottom of the gallery, click a More option (e.g. More Entrance

Effects...).4. A full list of available animations appears, categorized by use (e.g. Subtle,

Exciting). Click an animation option to preview it. Click OK to apply the selected animation.

Advanced Animation Timing1. On the Animation Pane, click to select the animation you want to modify.2. Click the drop-down box and choose Timing from the menu.

3. Make changes as needed, then click OK to confirm.

Working with TriggersDuring a presentation, clicking the mouse button or pressing the right arrow key will play your animations in order. However, you can also link selected animations to a trigger object, such as an on-screen button. The linked animation will not play until you click this trigger object.1. Insert the element that will serve as a trigger object.2. On the Animation Pane, click to select the animation you want to add a

trigger to.3. Under the tab, click Trigger in the Advanced Animation

group. Select On click of, and choose the desired trigger object from the menu.

Advanced Animation Effect OptionsEach type of animation features unique customization options. Additionally, some PowerPoint objects (e.g. text boxes, SmartArt) can be further customized.1. On the Animation Pane, click to select the animation you want to modify.2. Click the drop-down box and choose Effect Options from the menu.3. Make changes as needed, then click OK to confirm.

Text Box OptionsWhen working with a text box containing a large amount of information, you may wish to specify how that text is grouped for animation purposes.To customize text grouping: on the Animation Pane, select the text box animation you want to modify. Click the drop-down box and choose Effect Options from the menu. Click the Text Animation tab. In the Group text drop-down list, select the grouping option you want (e.g. By 1st Level Paragraphs). Click OK to confirm.

SmartArt OptionsSmartArt objects are groups of shapes and text that form a coherent whole, such as a flowchart or hierarchy diagram. While SmartArt is animated as a singular object by default, you can separate components for individual animation.To animate SmartArt components individually: on the Animation Pane, select the SmartArt animation you want to modify. Click the drop-down box

and choose Effect Options from the menu. Click the SmartArt Animation tab. In the Group graphic drop-down list, select One by one and click OK. On the Animation Pane, click the new drop-down bar to display and modify the animation for each SmartArt component.

Adding Sounds to AnimationsOn the Animation Pane, click to select the animation you want to add sound to. Click the drop-down box and choose Effect Options from the menu. In the Sound drop-down list, select a sound. Click to adjust volume. Click OK to add the sound to your animation.To use a custom sound from your computer: in the Sound drop-down list, choose Other Sound from the bottom of the list. In the Add Audio dialog box, browse to and select the desired sound file (.wav), then click .

Use the Repeat option to loop the selected animation a certain number of times, or until a defined point

(e.g. Until End of Slide).

4Custom Paths & Transitions

Creating a Custom Motion PathPowerPoint 2010 provides a number of motion paths that can be used to move objects around a slide, but you may wish to draw your own path.To create a custom motion path:1. Select the object you want to animate.2. Under the tab, click Add Animation in the Advanced

Animation group.3. Click Custom Path.4. On the main part of the screen, draw your custom path. Click and then click

again elsewhere to draw straight lines, or click and drag to draw freehand curves. Press the ESCAPE key to finish drawing and preview your animation.

Slide TransitionsTransitions are animated effects displayed between slides.

Adding a Transition to a Slide1. On the Slide Thumbnail Pane, select the slide you want to add a transition to.2. Under the tab, choose an effect from the Transition to This Slide

gallery. Click the icon in the bottom-right of the gallery to open a window with more options.

3. Click on a transition to apply it to the slide.

Customizing a TransitionSelect the slide with the transition you want to customize. Under the

tab, click the Effect Options button in the Transition to This Slide group. Choose options as desired.Note: Depending on the selected transition, available customization options may differ.

Previewing a TransitionSelect the slide with the transition you want to preview. Under the tab, click the Preview button.

Changing the Duration of a Transition EffectSelect the slide with the transition you want to change the duration of. Under the tab, click inside the Duration field and type a new duration time (how long the animation will take to play in full). Alternatively, click the up and down arrow buttons beside the field to incrementally change the transition duration.

Applying a Transition to All SlidesSelect the slide with the transition you want to apply to the rest of the presentation. Under the tab, click Apply to All in the Timing group.

Removing a TransitionSelect the slide with the transition you want to remove. Under the tab, click None in the Transition to This Slide gallery.

Slide Advance OptionsBy default, PowerPoint advances to the next slide in a presentation with a mouse click. You can disable manual advancement for individual slides, or specify a duration of time before advancing to the next slide automatically.

Under the tab, change Advance Slide options as needed.Note that if you disable On Mouse Click, you will not be able to manually advance to the next slide.

Adding Sounds to SlidesWhile you can add sounds to individual animations (see Adding Sound to Animations, page 3), applying sound effects to entire slides enables flexibility — you can set up sounds that play through multiple slides.To play a sound when a slide opens: under the tab, click the

Sound drop-down list in the Timing group. Choose a sound from the list.To use a custom sound from your computer: under the tab, click the Sound drop-down list in the Timing group. Choose Other Sound at the bottom of the list. In the Add Audio dialog box, browse to and select the desired sound file (.wav), then click .To remove a sound from a slide: under the tab, click the Sound drop-down list in the Timing group. Choose No Sound from the top of the list.

Playing a Sound Throughout Multiple SlidesAdd a sound to a slide as outlined above (To play a sound when a slide opens). Click the Sound drop-down list again and, at the bottom of the list, choose Loop Until Next Sound. The selected sound will play until another sound replaces it.To set up a slide to stop playing sounds: select the slide where the sound will stop playing. Under the tab, click the Sound drop-down list in the Timing group, and choose Stop Previous Sound.

Click and drag to rotate the animation path.

Click and drag these handles to resize the animation path.
