Hospitality News:

Florida breaks record for tourist visitation in 2015 Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz Richard Bilbao Like Orlando, Florida can barely keep up with all the tourists wanting to visit and spend their vacations in the Sunshine State. According to the Associated Press, Florida welcomed more than 105 million tourists last year well above the 100 million tourist goal Florida Gov. Rick Scott wanted to see happen for the state. Scott is expected to be giving an official announcement for the figures today at Epcot. Obviously, Orlando plays a huge role in the state's tourism appeal by drawing more than 62 million visitors each year. The theme parks, hotel amenities, convention market and more all help to keep the region as the top leisure destination on the planet. That's also good for the $60 billion tourism and travel industry that services tourists and business travelers and will help to further make the region a prime investment spot for anyone wishing to get a piece of the tourism pie.

SeaWorld Entertainment makes hotel development plans with new division Orlando Business Journal - The Buzz Richard Bilbao SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. (NYSE: SEAS) has made the first major move toward adding new hotel properties to its theme parks nationwide. The company announced on Feb. 19 it has formed the resort development group aimed at "leading the resort construction and development efforts" SeaWorld CEO and President Joel Manby announced last November. The company named Steve Iandolo, a former vice president of hotel development for Herschend Family Entertainment, as the new vice president of resort development for SeaWorld. Iandolo's experience also traces back to Universal Studios Parks & Resorts where was creative director for the development of Universal Orlando Resort's Royal Pacific Resort, Hard Rock Hotel and Portofino Bay Hotel, said the release. This is a huge move by SeaWorld to fulfill its commitment to enter the hotel development game that its competitors Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando have dominated for a long time. Hotels are big revenue generators for theme parks as they serve as new revenue sources and also encourage overnights stays that could lead to repeat visitation to the theme park. Last month, rumors were that SeaWorld had hired a hotel consultant with the plan to add up to 2,500 hotel rooms throughout its theme parks. In Orlando, SeaWorld has more than 135 acres of developable land that could house a new hotel, as well as various other existing properties the company could partner with or acquire ad re-theme with more SeaWorld branding.

See what impact Disneys potential hotel plans may have in Orlando Orlando Business Journal Richard Bilbao Theres a saying that when Disney sneezes, Orlando catches a cold, and its the same case when the theme park giant does something to grow its business. Thats why Orlando needs to heed what The Walt Disney Co. executives may be watching at Walt Disney World that could lead to new hotel rooms. During the companys Feb. 9 first-quarter 2016 earnings call, Disney COO Tom Staggs said the success of the companys domestic hotels they enjoy up to 92 percent occupancy rates signal that the company could consider growing its hotel inventory to meet that demand. We see opportunity, given the strong occupancy of room nights to expand hotel capacity down the road, he said, during the call. Walt Disney World has 25 hotels with more than 30,000 total hotel rooms, ranging from value to moderate and deluxe amenities. So the idea that the theme park company could add more inventory is staggering, especially anytime it invests in a new project designed to be the best, most cutting-edge ones the world has seen yet. A new Disney hotel push could mean hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment for Orlando that translates into thousands of new temporary construction and permanent hotel jobs. In addition, the success Disney can find via new hotels may draw more visitors to the region, which translates into more opportunities for local tourism businesses to get their piece of the $60 billion annual tourist spending pie. So with the plans to add new attractions at nearly all its parks within the next one to three years, this is the time for Disney to prepare for increases in attendance, said Abe Pizam, dean with the University of Central Floridas Rosen College of Hospitality Management. They have a captive audience.

RIDGE / TRIPOLI

Two CFHLA Leaders will soon be leaving the Central Florida area, due to new positions out of state.

Its wise on their part to be thinking this. Disney is in the midst of building multiple expansions at its parks, including Pandora The World of Avatar at Disneys Animal Kingdom, the Star Wars and Toy Story expansions at Disneys Hollywood Studios, and adding an experience themed in the world of the film Frozen at Epcot. They probably will try to synchronize the hotel plan with the [theme park] plans, Pizam said. As for what kind of hotels to expect, Pizam said it makes the most sense to stick with midrange ones that can accommodate the most visitors. Their most successful hotels are the midrange hotels the low- and high-end hotels are doing OK but this requires a significant investment, and those work. Is there a risk to invest more? Yes, but there is always a risk just like any other business. And when it comes to Disney, the risk is minimal.

CFHLA 2nd Vice Chairman

Doug Ridge will soon be relocating from the

Orlando World Center Marriott to the

Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Maryland, near Washington D.C.

Additionally, former CFHLA Chairman and current
