Campus Signage PolicyAs part of the planning for the University entrance, the Arboretum Council and the Facilities ManagementCommittee voted temporary signage would be prohibited at the University entrance and along J.N. AndrewsBoulevard. This policy was deemed reasonable because of the increased visibility of the official entrance tothe University and the new way-finding signs installed throughout campus.

Signs placed there will be removed and can be picked up at the Integrated Marketing & Communicationbuilding. Signage left at IMC for 30 days will be disposed of.

Banners may be placed at the terminus of J.N. Andrews Boulevard on the poles provided.

Reservations/arrangements to install and store banners can be made with Plant Services. When providingguests with directions to campus, weather-resistant boxes to place flyers about your event have beeninstalled for your convenience near the large campus map at the Welcome Globe.

Tailored Nanoparticles for Advanced Environmental Processes

Dr. Sherine O. Obare Professor of Chemistry

Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI 49008

Nanoscale metallic particles are of great interest due to their importance in advanced technological applications. Synthetic procedures that produce gram-scale, well defined and monodisperse metallic nanoparticles with controlled size and shape, especially within the 1-4 nm size range is a continuing challenge in nanoscale science. We have developed new organic ligands that when used as stabilizers for metal nanoparticles, provide the ability to gain control of the particle size in one-step synthetic procedures (Figure 1). Monodisperse metallic nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic, microscopic and x-ray techniques. We have further investigated the electrochemical quantized double-layer (QDL) charging differences of 1-4 nm metallic nanoparticles. Within this size range, the electronic properties transition from a bulk-like continuum of electronic states to molecule-like, discrete electronic orbital levels. Such properties have led us to investigate their charging and discharging at large band-gap semiconductor interfaces. The results are paramount toward understanding and developing advanced materials for catalysis, and the degradation of toxic environmental pollutants. Furthermore, the functionalization of metallic nanoparticles with various molecules including biologically and environmentally relevant molecules is often carried out to enhance the material’s properties. The presentation will showcase examples of functionalized nanoparticles and their effect on microorganisms. SELECTED REFERENCES 1. Andrews Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.by Jenna Neil

On Thursday, January 15, Onleilove Alston, a faith community organizer and contributing writer forSojourners Magazine, spoke for Andrews University’s 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. Her topic was“The Biblical Call to Justice and African Roots of the Sabbath.”

Alston is known for her activism for justice and the poor after firsthand experience with poverty, foster careand homelessness. During her presentation she talked about Biblical justice specifically from Isaiah 61. Shebegan by reading verses 1–4 and asked students to consider what the scripture was saying about God’sjustice, a personal walk with God and several other areas.

“Nothing I can talk about,” she said, “can compare to what God says in His word.” Speaking of the recentevents in Ferguson, Alston continued, “Do you think God has anything to do with justice? There’s our versionof justice and God’s version. We need to use the Bible to examine God’s version of justice.”

As part of her talk, Alston used three examples of how the justice of Isaiah 61 was portrayed. The first wasfrom Matthew and the reverse Exodus, or a return to Egypt to remember the first exodus. The second wasDr. King’s poor people’s campaign, specifically Resurrection City, a shantytown for the poor located on theNational Mall in Washington, D.C. The poor people living in Resurrection City rose up in the sprit of God withthe support of allies to change their lives. The third and final example Alston used was from her own life.

"If a song can move me in some way then in turn I can figure out how to interpret thatso I can then go out on a nightly basis and look people in the face and hopefully sing it in a way that'smoving to them. To me that's what it's all about."

Tonight, Phelps will be trying to move the audience at Andrews University's Howard Performing Arts Center ina solo tour stop touting the songs off his latest album, 2012's "Classic," as well as a few new tunes from hisforthcoming record, "Freedom," which is due out in April.

Serving the World's Cities: An Andrews University ResponseCities have been interwoven in human experience from the beginning of time. Some will argue that humansprefer the gentle pastoral beauty and pace of life familiar to uncrowded rural settings, but the reality tells usotherwise. For whatever reason, we gather in cities. Today’s cities are larger, more creative, diverse andglobal than ever. In the mid-19th century less than 10 percent of the world’s population lived in a metropolisof 100,000 or more. By 1900 the urban population in the world had increased to 14 percent. Today, 60percent of the human population is in the city, and in developed nations like Canada and America it is anastounding 75 percent. And the pace of migration to urban life is quickening. Today’s cities are the center ofpower, culture, economy and spirituality.

Christians bring their influence into the life of the city as they live there, work there, play there and socializethere. Most young adults leaving our colleges and universities establish careers in one of our world’s urbancenters. They need support as they bring the presence of Christ into those cultures.

Recognizing this challenge, the Andrews University Doctor of Ministry program offers an Urban MinistryConcentration. The next cohort in this concentration will begin in March 2015 in Chicago. Skip Bell, professorof Christian leadership, leads the concentration.

Scholars Discuss Interplay of Faith and ScienceDr. Deborah Haarsma stood in front of the audience at Granger Community Church and described the layersof glaciers that have preserved evidence of 720,000 winters. She presented layers of sedimentary rock thatgo back millions of years and radiometric dating that puts some earthly rock formations at 3.6 billion yearsold.

She described her own work as an astronomer, where she studies distant galaxies over a billion lightyearsfrom Earth.

Speaking to a sold-out crowd attending Michiana Forum on Wednesday evening, Sept. 17, Haarsma was oneof four panelists invited to speak about scholarship and reconciling Christian faith with scientific evidence thatappears to contradict Biblical teachings.

Other panelists took different approaches, but also spoke of reconciliation between science and faith.

Dr. Roy Gane, a professor of Hebrew Bible and ancient near eastern languages at Andrews University, spokeof the importance of recognizing both the Bible and scientific evidence as legitimate sources of knowledge.

Fusing TraditionsPetar Jankovic is the rarest of musicians.

While the Serbian-born classical guitarist traveled the world performing solo shows, he longed to share thatspotlight with other players.

"I just had this sheer desire to play with other people on stage, but classical guitarists just don't have thatmany chances to play with other ensembles," Jankovic says by telephone from his home in Bloomington, Ind."At one point, I just got a little tired of traveling alone and playing alone. I always liked chamber music, where you can collaborate with other people, so I wanted to come up with something to fill that void."

That something is the Petar Jankovic Ensemble, which performs Sunday at Andrews University to open theHoward Performing Arts Center's 2014-15 season.

Alumnus "Exudes Confidence"Youssef Yomtoob has yet to meet a school district on which he can’t have a positive effect.

The new School City of East Chicago superintendent, affectionately nicknamed “Dr. Joe” by those who knowhim, told the crowd of parents, teachers and administrators that everyone “is in it together” and that therewill be no “they and us” once he takes over the reins July 1. The School Board voted unanimously to offerYomtoob a five-year contract at a special meeting Friday night, the terms of which will be discussed during apublic hearing at the June 30 meeting.

Yomtoob, whose career spanned 50 years before he retired from Hawthorn School District in Vernon Hills,Illinois, said his philosophy stems from research at a district he was in during the 1970s that revealed allstudents, despite their racial or economic backgrounds, have the potential to succeed. Prof Talks On Food Consumption vs. Production“It’s pretty well known that we’re second in crop diversity only to California,” said Lee LaVanway, president,CEO and market master of the Benton Harbor Fruit Exchange. “As a temperate zone, we’re probably numberone.”

As such, residents and tourists should be able to find a cornucopia of Michigan produce in every supermarketin the region, but taking a trip to any of the local groceries will show you that, in 2014, such is not the case.Rather, finding produce advertised as “Michigan grown” is pretty rare—even during the peaks of the variousharvest seasons.

“We have a $500 million gap between what we consume and what we produce in this county,” explainedMark Moreno, associate professor of architecture at Andrews University and founding director of the NewBerrien Food Foundation. “We’re spending $680 million, and we’re producing less than $100 million.”

Professor Develops Early Math Skills TestGetting help early is critical, but unlike reading, there are very few math assessments for young studentsthat may explain why they struggle to perform calculations such as addition and subtraction.

Now, Researchers at the University of Western Ontario have developed a two-minute screening test todetermine whether students as early as senior kindergarten have a handle on numeracy skills – and to catchthose who may be showing signs of early learning problems or who just need extra help.

The remarkably simple test was created by Daniel Ansari, the Canada Research Chair in developmentalcognitive neuroscience, and Nadia Nosworthy, now an assistant professor at Michigan’s Andrews University, because there was a need for math assessments in developing countries that did not require a computer toadminister.

Professor Quoted in ArticleA couple articles ago I started a look at some popular food myths that have no real scientific merit. I lovethese things as they help people make better, more informed choices about food without being mislead bypopular hearsay. Here are a few more food myths for you to ponder:

Your body can’t use the protein from beans unless you eat them with rice. This is a myth that I once believed in as it pertained to how we would design complementary ingredientswhen creating new dishes. Now we know better. Proteins - which our bodies need to make everything fromnew muscle to hormones - are made up of different combinations of 20 amino acids. Thing is, our bodies canmake only 11 of these amino acids; we must get the other nine from food. Animal-based protein-rich foodslike eggs and meat provide all nine of these “essential” amino acids, but nearly all plant foods are low in atleast one. Experts used to say that to get what your body needs to make proteins, you needed to pairplant-based foods with complementary sets of amino acids - like rice and beans. Now they know that youdon’t have to eat those foods at the same meal. “If you get a variety of foods throughout the day, they all go

It was Weakly’s study of Jesus’ life that prompted her to write this book. As she dug deeper into the Bibleand other commentaries, she began to imagine how a triune God experienced the events. Based on herresearch of Jesus’ life and the culture of that time, Weakly weaves in insights about the customs of Jesus’day as she tells the familiar Bible stories as first-person accounts from each member of the Trinity.

Student Gardens Partner with Health DepartmentIf the people can't get to the farm, bring the farm to the people.

That's the philosophy behind a new partnership between the Berrien County Health Department and AndrewsUniversity's student garden to operate a mobile farmers' market this year.

Garth Woodruff, an Andrews horticulture instructor who oversees the garden project, said it is unbelievablethat there are people in Berrien County who can't get freshly grown produce.

"It is shocking to me that in this county, where 90 percent of the land is used for agriculture, where you can'tfind better vegetable growing land in the region, and probably the United States, you would have fooddeserts in areas such as Berrien Springs, Benton Harbor and Niles," Woodruff said.

First, I realized that I was not alone in feeling lonely. Many of my fellow international students, whom I cameto know through classes or campus-sponsored activities, also missed their own holiday celebrations. <<<Read the full story >>>

Andrew McChesney News editor, Adventist Review

Erno Gyeresi, who worked 13 years as a pastor in Romania and 13 years at AndrewsUniversity Press, dies after a struggle with cancer.

Posted February 2, 2015

Erno Gyeresi, a Romanian pastor-turned-business executive who became a key force behind the popular AndrewsStudy Bible, has died after a long struggle with cancer. He was 54.

Gyeresi died peacefully on Sabbath afternoon, Jan. 31, at his home in Niles, Michigan, with his family by his side, hisfamily said.

Gyeresi spent the first 13 years of his career working as a pastor and church administrator in Romania, and the last13 years of his life working at Andrews University Press, where he served as managing editor of the Andrews StudyBible, first released in the New King James Version in 2010.

He also was the managing editor of the same Bible in the New International Version (forthcoming); editorial consultantfor the Romanian edition of the Bible (2014); and managing editor of the Andrews Bible Commentary (forthcoming).

At the same time, he worked as associate director responsible for business management and marketing at AndrewsUniversity Press.

“His influence as both a theologian and businessman on the work of the church’s only regularly established academicpublishing house will long be felt through our roster of important works in the last 13 years, and particularly throughthe ministry of the Andrews Study Bible,” said Ronald Knott, director of Andrews University Press.

“The listing of his name in such a vital position in every one of the scores of thousands of copies of the Bible thathave been distributed around the world is only a token acknowledgment of the truly profound influence he had on thedevelopment of that landmark publication,” Knott said Monday.

Gyeresi, born on Feb. 27, 1960, in Nyaradszereda, Romania, gave up a promising career in mathematics to follow inthe footsteps of his father, grandfather, and eight other family members in working for the Seventh-day AdventistChurch.

He made the decision while simultaneously studying mathematics and theology in Bucharest, Romania. He workedas a local pastor and church administrator for 13 years in the North Transylvania Conference after graduating with anundergraduate degree from the Adventist seminary in Bucharest in 1985.

“As a faithful servant of the Lord, Erno touched many lives during his years of ministry,” his family said in a statement.

In 1998, Gyeresi moved to Berrien Springs, Michigan, and completed all but his doctoral dissertation in systematictheology at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University by the early 2000s. He obtainedan MBA from Andrews in 2009.

Meanwhile, he started working at AndrewsUniversity Press as a student and was promotedto associate director in 2011.

But he probably will be best remembered for hiscontribution to the Andrews Study Bible.

“I valued Erno’s careful, quiet, yet insightfulobservations and suggestions. When Ernospoke, it was good to pay attention,” said GeraldA. Klingbeil, who worked with Gyeresi as acontributor to the Andrews Study Bible and oneof the associate editors of the Andrews BibleCommentary. Klingbeil also is an associate editorat the Adventist Review and Adventist World.

“While Erno’s death appears to be a point victoryof the archenemy of human life and happiness,”Klingbeil said, “I am looking forward toresurrection morning when we will praise theLamb whose sacrifice made victory sure.”

Erno is survived by his wife of 29 years, IldikoGyeresi; his son, Lehel Gyeresi, of Houston,Texas; his daughter, Harmat Beebe, of AltamonteSprings, Florida; his parents, Iosif and MartaGyeresi, of Tirgu Mures, Romania, and his sister,Judit Dan, of Madrid, Spain.

Erno Gyeresi Obituary1960–2015

Erno Gyeresi, 54, died peacefully on Saturday afternoon, January 31, at his home in Niles, Michigan, with hisfamily by his side. Erno’s death followed a long battle with cancer.

He was born on February 27, 1960, in Nyaradszereda, Romania to Iosif and Marta (Csongvay) Gyeresi. Ernoearned his high school diploma from Bolyai Farkas Theoretical Lyceum in June of 1979. Later that year, hewas accepted into the Babes-Bolyai University Faculty of Mathematics program. Before he could begin hisundergraduate program, he completed nine months of mandatory military service. In June of 1985, Ernofulfilled all degree requirements for a BS in Mathematics, except for his final thesis. His natural and widelyrecognized aptitude for a bright career in mathematics was balanced by a calling to the gospel ministry, acalling pursued by his father, a grandfather and a total of 10 members of his extended family. So whileworking on his mathematics degree, Erno concurrently attended the Seventh-day Adventist TheologicalSeminary in Bucharest, Romania, where he graduated in June of 1985 with an undergraduate degree intheology. By the early 2000s, he had completed all but his dissertation for a PhD in Systematic Theologyfrom Andrews University, and in 2009 he completed a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis inmarketing, also from Andrews.

Erno married Ildiko Ilona Galfi on August 4, 1985, in Tirgu Mures, Romania. They lived in Cluj Napoca for 13years, where Erno served in various roles in the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a pastor andsecretary/treasurer for the North Transylvania Conference. As a faithful servant of the Lord, Erno touchedmany lives during his years of ministry. In 1998, he moved his family to Berrien Springs, Michigan, to attendthe Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University. As a student, Erno worked in severaldepartments, including Physics Enterprises, the James White Library, and Andrews University Press. In 2005,he began full-time employment at the Press, and in 2011 he was named associate director, responsible for allbusiness management and marketing.

In addition to his service as a pastor and church administrator in Romania, Erno’s professional influence andlegacy will long be felt for his 13 years at Andrews University Press. Most significantly, he was the managingeditor of the “Andrews Study Bible,” first released in the New King James Version in 2010; managing editor ofthe same study Bible in the New International Version (forthcoming); editorial consultant for the Romanianedition of the study Bible (2014); and managing editor of the “Andrews Bible Commentary” (forthcoming). Allof this was in addition to his profound editorial and business influence on the regular operations of the Press, the only regularly established academic publishing house operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Erno is survived by his wife of 29 years, Ildiko Gyeresi of Niles, Michigan; his son Lehel Gyeresi of Houston,Texas; his daughter Harmat (Kyle) Beebe of Altamonte Springs, Florida; his parents Iosif and Marta Gyeresiof Tirgu Mures, Romania, and his sister Judit (Viorel) Dan of Madrid, Spain.

Stronger than Before: A Gift of HopeFirst Congregational Church UCC will host a benefit concert titled "Stronger than Before: A Gift of Hope" onSunday, Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. The church is located at 2001 Niles Avenue in St. Joseph, Michigan.

The concert will feature uplifting music that is based on “HOPE” and will benefit two cancer organizations anda bereavement center, which provide needed services and support for people and their caregivers dealingwith cancer and grief. We are supporting Handles of Hope, associated with the Marie Yeager Cancer Center ofLakeland HealthCare, Berrien County Cancer Services, and Lory’s Place Grief Healing and Education Center.

It is common for people to be affected by cancer, either in their immediate family or their circle ofacquaintances. Paul Flyger, the church’s director of music ministry, says he is “excited to work on this projectbecause it has potential to speak to anyone. My family was affected by my father’s battle with pancreaticcancer.”

First Congregational Church is indirectly connected to these organizations through three of its members: LisaBartoszek, director of Lory’s Place; Ruth Beach, founder of the Handles of Hope project; and David Resch, avolunteer for the annual bike ride at the Berrien County Cancer Services. The concert’s aim is both to supportthese organizations and to provide an opportunity to come together and celebrate the power of healing and

Guest musicians include Mike Perkins (alto saxophone) and Beth Oeseburg (violin) fromStevensville, Christina Gibson (flute) from Niles, and Janene Bergen-Bock (soprano) from Chicago. She willsing Olivia Newton-John’s “Stronger than Before,” the cover title for Newton-John’s album of inspiration andencouragement for women who have dealt with breast cancer, written after her personal cancer experience.

The Andrews University Singers, under the direction of Stephen Zork, will perform the center piece of theprogram, “This House of Peace,” composed by Ralph M.
