R.I.P. - Wes Santee, 1932 - 2010

==========================

Neal Bascomb's 2004 book, The Perfect Mile, brought Wes Santee to our attention and to some ex-

tent, brought renewed attention to Wes Santee. One of the University of Kansas standouts (Billy Mills,

Jim Ryun, Bill Lundberg), Santee could very well have run the first sub-4 mile, but tangles with the

AAU helped defeat his effort. He did run 4:00.5, but never quite made it under the magic number. The

most head-slapping moment of AAU's power in regard to Santee's career was the the 1952 Olympics,

when the AAU required the middle distance runner to compete in the 5000 rather than his signature

event, the 1500.

I had a chance to meet Wes Santee at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento. Santee appeared

with Neal Bascomb at a book-signing for The Perfect Mile. Both Santee and Bascomb were familiar

with the Michigan Runner as Ron Marinucci's review of The Perfect Mile was one of the first to be

published.

Bill Khan's Terrific Article about Davidson's John Izzo

========================================

An email from Bob Parks alerted us to Bill Kahn's article: Davison's John Izzo Progresses from Back-

of-Pacl to Champion During Four Year Cross-Country Career. One can't help but be inspired by

Izzo's story; persistence and hard work paid off.

Thousand Miles For Michigan Run Hits Rochester/Rochester Hills

====================================================

The Thousand Miles for Michigan run is traveling through Rochester/ Rochester Hills. Oscoda Busi-

ness Coach George Morse is running 1000 miles, visiting 200 towns and cities all over the state, to

help support and promote small businesses.

He'll be running in Rochester on Friday November 19, 2010 starting at 1:00 PM at Runnin' Gear at

125 S. Livernois Rochester Hills 48307.

Local runners are expected to join Coach Morse on his 5 mile run, where he is expected to stop along

the way and chat with local small business owners.

Currently at the 350 mile mark of the run, Coach Morse has visited 70 communities and has spoken

with hundreds of Michigan small business owners, encouraging them to stay motivated during this

challenging time and getting them to share their belief in Michigan with others by being a part of the

"Thousand Miles For Michigan" video blog. Along the 5 mile route in each town Coach Morse takes

photos and captures video used to prepare a slideshow to highlight each community. Visit www.thou-

sandmilesformichigan.com if you'd like to view the videos or get more information.

Coach Morse is looking forward to meeting you while he is in town. If you or business owners in your

town, or members of the local media, are interested in talking with Coach Morse you can contact him

directly on his cell phone 989-305-1248 or email [email protected].

So far eight businesses in Rochester will be talking with Coach Morse.

Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 13-14, 2010) - IRock 'n' Roll San Antonio

Marathon and Half Marathon

============================================================================

Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: "I flew to San Antonio, late Wednesday night to experience

some Texas hospitality and run the rock-n-roll half marathon Sunday. I check into the hotel and I can't

believe the view I have. I'm over looking one of Americas greatest monuments to freedom and the

pride and joy of Texas, the Alamo. Lights shine on the building and it looks spectacular. I have a great

view to dream about as I call it a day.

P. 3N O V E M B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 0 - M I C H I G A N R U N N I N G N E W S

I wake up to the sound of Scottish Bag pipe music, I look outside and they are having a Veterans

Day Memorial Service out in front of the Alamo. Veterans and dignitaries are all around and they

leave a wreath outside of the Alamo to honor all those who have served to keep America free for the

last 235 years. We honor all of them today and everyday.

I go out and check out the Alamo. Ive been here before but it's always a cool place to see again.

This was the main building of the mission fort where the Battle of the Alamo happened in 1836. A his-

tory board is very interesting to read. There's a gift shop, a couple of other small buildings and a

beautiful park within the Alamo grounds. It's really a special place.

Then I started my own tour of the world-famous River Walk of San Antonio. Its an awesome setup of

the river below ground level with shops and restaurants all along it. A river boat taxi called Rio Taxi

takes people up and down the river. Had lunch at a place called Rio Rio and they made the gua-

camole dip right in front of you with a fresh avocado, and other fresh vegetables-- MM good. I contin-

ued my walk to the south end of the river walk. As I leave the city there's lots of trees and greenery.

Its a great running spot as there are very few people to hinder you. I get to the end of the walk and

find they are getting ready to expand the trail even further down the river. The Pioneer Foods pro-

cessing plant there is over 100 years old-- ots of history on this river. I walk up to the northern part of

the River Walk which was completely rebuilt in 2009.

I also see the locks which raise and lower boats in the river because the river drops 35 feet in 5

miles. Beyond the locks they have tried to make it as much of a natural setting as possible with

marshes and native plants in the area. It's really a great recreational trail. Another added attraction

was the lighted plastic fish they hung from the I 35 overpass. It looks cool at night. The information

signs said there are 13 miles of River Walk trails and I think I hiked all of it. San Antonio is working

hard to make the city recreational friendly.

Friday I go over to the expo at Alamo Dome, a football stadium and entertainment center. After I get

my number, shirt, and goodie bag I go over to the Brooks circus entertainment zone. It was a blast.

They had a ping ball toss into a shoe and you'd win a stuffed pillow shoe. An instant raffle and you

could win shoes, bandanna, or a hat. What a great show: gait analysis and a freak shoe in the trailer.

I'm sure they sold a lot of shoes and apparel from that operation. There was the new Hell run in Texas

with lots of obstacles. The Cow Town Marathon, 3M Half Marathon, and the Dallas White Rock

Marathon were all there inviting runners to come.

In the evening I went to a pre race dinner hosted by The Competitor Group at the Sunset Station, a

former train station depot in San Antonio. Went to the Rick Springfield concert afterwards. He was a

rock star from the 80's playing again in the 2000's and having fun. He put on a great show. Rod

Dixon, the New Zealander, Olympic Bronze medalist and 1983 New york City marathon champion,

was next to me and I said to him "people forget about Olympians and remember rock stars forever."

He laughed and kept on enjoying the show. He was in town helping with the kids race Saturday morn-

ing.

Saturday I walked around Hemisphere park. San Antonio hosted the 1968 Hemisphere exhibition

and the park is the legacy left from it. Statues, buildings, fountains and the Tower of Americas remain.

The Tower of Americas is a 750 tower with a restaurant and observation deck on it-- an impressive

structure in central Texas. I ate at a cool restaurant at the north end of the river walk called Glorias-- a

Mexican restaurant that's away from the city but still on the river. Tomorrow I get to run all around San

Antonio.

P. 4 M I C H I G A N R U N N I N G N E W S - N O V E M B E R 1 7 , 2 0 1 0

The race started at 7:15 am which is early for any race. This year the race starts downtown so just

walk out of the hotel to the start. I'm in the warm up area and I see Kevin Hanson. I see he has

brought Molly Pritz to run the race. I get into my corral to run and Randy and Cathy Step walk up be-

hind me. They were in Austin for a running tech show and decided to run this race. No matter where I

go I always see Michigan runners. It's a cloudy, cool, 50 degree day-- good for running. At mile 3 we

go by the Alamo; there's a little bit of a hill at 5 miles. From there it's pretty much flat the rest of the

way as we through downtown again, through Hemisphere park area and finally we get near the Alamo

Dome and have to run up a steep 50 foot climb, take a quick right, and finish at the Alamo Dome

parking lot. It feels good to finish after running up the last hill. I hang around to watch other runners

finish and see the concert. Everyone's having a super time especially since the rain held off. The

Competitor Group put on a great race here like they do at all therir races. At the awards ceremony,

Molly Pritz from the Hansons running team is the winner of the half marathon with a big PR. Kevin

and Keith Hanson just keep on turning out great runners from their program.

Sunday evening to end my trip with a bang, I went up to the top of the Tower of Americas and saw a

lighted-up San Antonio. This was my fourth time here and I finally went to the top of the Tower. It was

a spectacular view. Come to San Antonio to run, see the sights, and eat. You'll have a fun time."

Staying on the road.
