• Help the children list things that are the same and things that are different about cities and farms. Write their ideas on chart paper. Talk about how God made each place for a purpose and that people on farms and in cities work together so we can have food, clothing, etc.

• Talk about safety rules, such as not talking to strangers, always staying with an adult, following traffic rules, not playing around farm equipment, and not sticking fingers in animals mouths. God wants us to learn to be safe in the city and on the farm.

• God encourages people from all areas such as the city and the farm to work together. Each place plays an important part in our daily living. Provide toy people, animals, barns, buildings, trees, buses, cars, and other appropriate items for the sand table. Let the children create farm and city environments and play and work together as God wants all people to do.

• Visit a grocery store. Arrange a tour that will allow the children to see how the food is delivered. For added fun, divide the children into small groups chaperoned by an adult and send the children on a scavenger hunt, identifying foods from each food group. Thank God for all the people who help us get the food we eat – farmers who grow it, truck drivers who deliver it, store clerks who sell it, and parents who prepare it.

• Use masking tape to make a map on the floor showing the community in which you live. Add paper buildings such as a doctor’s office, dentist’s office, school, library, store, etc. Move play people around the map and talk about how you feel when you visit these places. Go back to the room and draw these people on a mural to hang in the hallway or in a multipurpose room. Discuss how each is a helper for God and how we can be helpers for God also, whatever our age. Invite some of the church helpers in your building to come and share a snack with your class. This is a good way to say thank you for all they do for you and for the Lord.

• Help the children develop responsibility by having helpers for clean up, passing out napkins, holding the door, placing the Bible on the altar at worship time, etc. Let them know they are important helpers to you, the other children, and to God.

• Visit places where community helpers work or have them come to the classroom and share how they serve the community. (Trips to or visit from parents of children in your room would be especially meaningful.) Lead the group in prayer. Ask God to bless the work these people do.
