This is the text of one of the two speech-es that Rev. Moon is giving on his 50-state speaking tour.

During the course of my life,I have totally committedmyself to the salvation ofhumankind centered onGod’s Will. As a result, I

came to realize that God is not sittingin the throne of glory and honor, but isa God of suffering, grief and lamenta-tion, endeavoring to save His childrensuffering in hell as a result of the fall.

Ever since I understood the Will ofGod and His heart, I have lived my lifewith a single minded goal to accomplishGod’s Will, transcending time and spaceand forgetting everything else.

When I reflect upon the 80 years ofmy life, filled with misunderstandingsand persecution, it is just amaz-ing that I can be with you today.I believe that it is entirely thanksto God. On this day of suchgreat significance, in order tounderstand human history andthe world from the perspectiveof God’s providence, I wouldlike to speak on the topic, “ThePath for America and Human-ity in the Last Days.”

When viewing human his-tory as God’s providence of sal-vation, the “last days” is a turn-ing point when the evil histo-ry of Satan concludes and God’sgood sovereignty begins. Accord-ingly, the last days are the timewhen everything is brought tofulfillment.

Thus in the last days, indi-vidual perfection is to be realized, fam-ily perfection is to be realized, the per-fection of a people, of a nation, of theworld and finally, the complete fulfill-ment of the cosmos is to be realized.

Whenever the time of the last dayswas heralded in God’s providence, Godled humankind to a God-centered ide-ology, but we failed to fulfill our respon-sibility to stand in the position of good-ness and eradicate evil history. How-ever, God is eternal, unchanging, absoluteand unique, and God’s Will is also eter-nal, unchanging and absolute. There-fore, through the true individual, truefamily, true society, true nation, trueworld and true sovereignty, God willsurely build the world in which He canlive, freely traveling and acting both inHeaven and on Earth.

Then, what is the original world forwhich God is seeking? It is a world thatis centered on the True Parents. How-ever, due to the fall, we lost the TrueParents of humanity and the true worldfrom the very beginning. Therefore, noth-ing in the world, not the land where weare living, human ideology or anythingelse, can connect us directly to the TrueParents. Therefore, we ourselves shouldfirst be restored to trueness. By so doing,when true parents, true husband andwife, true children, true people, the truecreation, the true sovereignty and truecosmos are born and can communicatewith God in heart, the evil world willeventually come to an end.

The last days is the time when suchan ideal will be realized. It is the timewhen the Second Advent will occur.Accordingly, in the last days, there will

be no external catastrophic phenome-na such as judgment by fire, the destruc-tion of the earth or people levitating intothe air. Instead, it is a time when thehistory of evil entangled with countlesstragedies will be untangled.

This is established through sacrifi-cial conditions offered on every level,those of the individual, family, society,people, nation, world and ultimatelycosmos. Thus, it is the time when all ofthese levels that have lost their verti-cal connection with God will be restored.We have been longing for such a day,and that is the final destination at whichwe all should arrive.

However, the individual, the familyand the nation have been estranged.Moreover, all kinds of problems suchas air pollution, food shortage, religiousstruggles and racial conflicts are con-

stantly arising throughout the world,causing disputes and even wars. Who,then, is going to take responsibility forthis world? This is a serious question.Communist countries in the past couldnot transcend their own nationalism.Nor can today’s super-power nation,America, transcend the idea of Ameri-canizing the world. When a nation placesits self-interest first, it will not be ableto lead the world. Therefore, we need apeople or a nation who are willing tosacrifice for a higher purpose and striveto build or become an ideal nation thatembraces the entire world.

With this view, in response to the callof God, I came to this country, the Unit-ed States of America. I have been mak-ing my utmost effort to revive America,by educating the youth for a countrythat is faced with a moral crisis anddeclining Christianity.

You might be curious about what Iam teaching to them. It is actually sim-ple. First, it is “to live for the sake ofothers.” More specifically, my teachingis that the individual lives for the fam-ily, the family for the society, the soci-ety for a people, a people for a nation,a nation for the world and the world forGod. Then, God will come to us.

In the family, parents are to live forchildren, children for parents, husbandfor wife and wife for husband. Anyonewho lives for others more than his orher own self will become a central per-son on the side of goodness.

Second, I am teaching people to “love

your enemy.” God Himself sacrificedJesus, His own begotten and belovedson, for the salvation of humankind.Since God did this in order to save thechildren of His enemy, Satan could notexercise his full authority and powerbefore God. Even Satan cannot help butsurrender voluntarily before the Godwho loves Satan’s children more thanHis own. Satan’s pattern is always tostrike first but lose in the end, and God’sstrategy is to win in the end by takingthe first blow and initial loss. Livingwith faith in such a heavenly law is thevery secret explaining the foundationthat I could lay, dispatching mission-aries to 185 nations throughout theworld despite fierce persecution andmisunderstanding.

Even when looking into the historyof Christian missionary activities, we

can discover that theirs wasa path of persecution andmartyrdom, hindered by ene-mies. On such a way, duringthe course of a 2,000-yearhistory, this trail of bloodbecame the fertilizer in thefoundation for a powerfuldemocracy to develop. Today,however, Christianity, whichonce was the source of powerand strength for democracy,is facing a crisis. Christiannations have lost the rightdirection; they deny God,Jesus and God’s providence.Now, we even hear voicesasserting, “God is dead” or“God does not exist.” Look-ing at them, how does God

feel? God’s heart has been searchingfor His children, sacrificing everythingthat He has, with hope that He couldsee a great day like today.

Ladies and Gentlemen: for whom hasGod been sacrificing Himself so far? Itis not for America, nor is it for Chris-tianity. But it is for each of us, in otherwords, for “you” and “me” as individu-als. Likewise, the reason why Jesus wascrucified was also not to save the Mes-siah, himself, but was to save each oneof us, “you” and “me.”

Since the fall began on the individ-ual level, salvation should also beginon the individual level. Accordingly, arepresentative of humankind shouldcome and proclaim, “I will take fullresponsibility as a representative of allhumankind. I will pay off all the debtthat man has incurred during the entirecourse of history and I will become aperson who will make God indebted tome instead.” Without such a realizationand determination, restoration is impos-sible. We should not be only conceptu-al or theoretical. On behalf of God, unlesswe are willing to experience miseriesmore than the one who is undergoingsuffering in the world, we cannot reachGod’s heart.

Have you ever prayed in desperationfor the 6 billion population of the world,with a feeling that your own childrenare dying? How much heart have youinvested to save a family, a tribe, a peo-ple, a nation and the world, with a will-ingness to sacrifice yourself for them?I believe few people are confident to givea positive answer to that question. How-ever, the Lord of the Second Advent

comes to the world with such an absolutestandard as the representative of allhumanity.

God, who has been leading the prov-idence of salvation, found Abraham2,000 years after the fall of the firsthuman ancestors. God made his descen-dants the chosen people, Israel, by mul-tiplying them on every level, as a newfamily, a new tribe and a new people.Because the Israelites were called asthe chosen people to receive the Mes-siah, based on the victorious founda-tion, they became the central people toreceive the substantial Messiah whowas to come in the future. If you go tothe central core, you can understandthat the standard and ideology that thefirst human ancestors, Adam and Eve,should have reached and fulfilled, needto be restored. This is the thought ofthe Messiah. In it, the believers standas “bride.” Therefore, the ultimate pur-pose pursued by Christianity is not tobuild the Kingdom of Christianity or theworld of Christianity. Its most impor-tant mission is to make preparationsto become a qualified bride to receivethe bridegroom.

Despite the significance of their mis-sion, because of the crucifixion of Jesusthe Israelites could not carry it out andpass on this tradition. Therefore theIsraelites, although called by God asthe first Israel, flew away. Christianity,called as the second Israel, arose tocarry out the mission instead. God ledthe 6,000-year providence centered onthis one purpose: Christianity was thebride prepared to receive the bride-groom. We are now in the final stage ofthe providence.

Then, what is the core of the Mes-sianic thought? It is a thought to savethe world; it is a teaching that can unifythe world and build an ideal family, andits main purpose is to restore the posi-tion of the True Parents that was lostby the fall of the human ancestors.

By looking into the teaching of theOld and New Testaments, one can under-stand that the Messiah comes with theauthority of the father, meets a sub-stantial bride, who represents the powerof the Holy Spirit, and restores the posi-tion of the True Parents. Therefore,Christianity is in the position of a brideto the coming Messiah. The bride andbridegroom in the “feast of the lamb”prophesied in the Book of Revelationrefer to the stage of becoming the TrueParents by first becoming a true hus-band and wife.

Jesus came with this mission. How-ever, when he lost his people and nation,due to their faithlessness, he offeredhis life for the sake of the world and theKingdom that God wished to build. Thepath of Jesus suffering on the crosswas the same path of tribulations thatGod Himself walked. In such a situa-tion of trial and tribulation, Jesus des-perately prayed, “Please forgive themfor they know not what they do.” Evenin the place of death, he forgave Romeand the group of people who opposedhim, waiting for victory in the future.Therefore, the life of Jesus did not endat the age of 33. With God’s help, Chris-tianity inherited his spirit and becameone of the four greatest worldwide reli-gions in human history.

Ladies and gentlemen: currently,America is recognized as the super-power of the world, but unless it standsstraight on the providential line of God,it will not continue to prosper. Let uslook at the history of civilization. Ancientcivilizations were born mainly in thetropics and subtropics. Examples includethe civilizations of the Mayas, Incas,Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China.Yet the sphere of civilization moves fromplace to place.

Had we not fallen, civilization wouldhave begun in the warm zone, corre-sponding to spring, and moved to thecool zone, corresponding to autumn.This is the warm-zone civilization cen-tered today on the free world, the west-ern civilization. In general, when view-ing the equator as the center, nationssuch as America, England, Germanyand so forth, linked around the latitudeof 23 degrees north, are the developedcountries of the west.

With the end of the cool zone civi-lization of autumn, the cold zone civi-lization of winter comes for a short time.This is the appearance of Communism.Many intellectuals may think that thecold war system disappeared after thedissolution of Soviet Union, but mate-rialism and atheism are still prevalentthroughout the world. They manifestin two major ideologies, democracy andcommunism, both of which are gradu-ally losing power.

God’s ideal of creation should havebegun in the warm zone of spring, butdue to the fall of the first human ances-tors, it started asthe tropical zonecivilization. Now,the civilization ofthe true spring thatwe have been seek-ing from time imme-morial will appear,overcoming the cri-sis of tropical zonecivilization and thethreats of cold zonecivilization. Whowill be able to meltthe block of icefrozen in the heartof God? And howwill he do it? It isimpossible withpower, money, sci-ence or knowledge.

As we can see from this movementof civilization centering on rivers andcoastlines, the center of civilization isnot fixed but is always moving to dif-ferent parts of the globe. Human civi-lization began to develop around theTigris and Euphrates and the Nile Rivers.The center of human civilization thenshifted to the Mediterranean, especial-ly focusing upon Greece, Rome, Spain,and Portugal. The center of human civ-ilization then moved to the Atlantic,focusing upon Britain and the UnitedStates. Ultimately it has born fruit inthe Pacific Ocean civilization of the Unit-ed States, Japan, and Korea. Thus, asviewed in this way - from the perspec-tive of the history of cultures - the Kore-an Peninsula occupies a very impor-tant position. To the north of Korea liethe ultimate points of the cold regioncivilization that link Russia and China.

To the south lie the ultimate points ofthe cool region civilization that link theUnited States and Japan.

Thus, it is consistent with the Prov-idential viewpoint that Korea gives riseto a warm region civilization repre-senting the spring season of world his-tory and having the capability to digestboth the cold and cool region civiliza-tions. From this aspect, the fact thatRev. Moon - who has dedicated his lifeto solving the North-South problem andthe East-West problem - has come fromKorea can only be described as the sum-mation of God’s providence.

In fact, throughout my life I havetranscended race, ideology and nation-al boundaries to pursue a movementfor one world under God. It is becauseof God’s providence that I have traveledthis path. This is the principle of prov-idential history - not a theory that I spe-cially devised. I was enlightened regard-ing the will of Heaven, and rather thanletting this remain as an idea alone, Ihave worked to bring God’s concept toreality. Externally, there is no place inany region of the world where I havenot been active. I have inspired evan-gelical and business activities in Alas-ka, in Antarctica, and in the countriesof the former Soviet Union, in the 33countries of South and Central Amer-ica and throughout Asia and Africa. Weare making preparations to solve prob-lems that humanity will face over thecoming millennium, such as environ-mental pollution, hunger, and disease.In recent years, I have worked center-

ing on the Pantanal and Amazon regionsof Brazil to lay a substantive founda-tion to protect the Earth’s environment.

On the other hand as regards theinternal aspects, I have worked throughthe International Holy Blessing and thePure Love movement. Some 430 mil-lion couples around the world have par-ticipated here, adding further impetusto the building of the Kingdom of Godon Earth that God has longed to see forsuch a long time.

Ladies and Gentlemen: up until now,countries possessing superior powerpolitically, militarily, and economical-ly have controlled the world. However,no country can exist eternally unlessit is in line with God’s providence. Thefall of the once glorious Greek andRoman civilizations are good examplesof this.

The United States, which today standstall as a super power, is in the same

position as Rome was in the past. Thefall of Rome occurred more as a resultof the internal cause of moral corrup-tion than from any external invasions.Moral corruption caused Rome to losethe support of heavenly fortune.

In recent history, political forcesfavoring dialectical materialism and thematerialistic view of history went so faras to take control of over one third of

the world’s population and two thirdsof its land area, including the formerSoviet Union and China. That expan-sion, however, could not stand forever.

The time will come when religiousleaders who speak for the Will of Godwill rise to prominence. Religious lead-ers are prophets. They must stand inthe place God wills, declare God’s will,

and point the way that humanity mustgo. However, the splintering of denom-inations and the struggles among reli-gious groups that we see today serveno purpose other than to hinder God’sprovidence. That is why I have for yearsdevoted 90 percent of our church’sbudget to activities that reach out toother denominations and otherreligions so as to contribute to theresolution of inter-religious con-flict.

I also founded the Inter-Reli-gious Federation for World Peacefor the following three purposes:to facilitate harmony and unityamong religious groups, to con-tribute to resolving the conflictsthat are going on in many areasof the world, and to help bringabout world peace. Most recently,I founded the Inter-religious andInternational Federation for WorldPeace, and this body has held seveninternational Hoon Dok Hae con-ferences.

All people should go beyondracial and religious differences,understand God’s providence tobring His ideal world of creation intoreality, and ultimately unite with God’sheart. It is heart that will bring faith,hope, and love - which humankind havebeen pursuing - to their ultimate con-clusion.

We must recover the heartistic rela-tionship with God that we lost as aresult of the human fall, and recoverthe positions of parent and child as Godoriginally envisioned them to be. Thus,the Last Day that God has promised tous is the day when True Parents come.In other words, it is the day when themultitudes of people in the world, wholost their Parent as a result of the fall,will again be able to meet their originalParent. Thus, the True Parents are thefinal fruit of the desires and hopes ofall humankind. They are the final fruitof the victories wrought throughouthuman history.

The Unification Church has workedto disseminate this tradition through-out the world through the InternationalHoly Blessing Ceremony. The fact thatblack people, white people and yellowpeople are able to come together asbrothers and sisters - beyond their dif-ferences of ethnicity, race, or skin color- to form loving married couples isamong the most significant factors inaccomplishing God’s will. Today, throughbeginning to realize the blessed familytradition, humankind is beginning torecover the relationships of brother andsister, husband and wife, and parentand child as originally envisioned byGod. Ultimately, we must go as far asto liberate God, who has been in thedepths of sorrow ever since He lost Hischildren. It is only then that the pathto true happiness will be opened.

Until now, democracy has called for“human freedom” and “human libera-tion.” In contrast, we must call for “God’sfreedom” and “the liberation of God.”When we succeed in relieving God’s sor-row, human liberation and the recov-ery of human freedom will follow auto-matically. Each of you should realizethat you were born to liberate God andto liberate the world.

Ladies and Gentlemen: there is pro-found significance in the fact that I am

discussing God’s providence across theUnited States. In many ways, the Unit-ed States is a country prepared by God’sblessing. The forefathers who built thiscountry were the Pilgrim Fathers, whorisked their lives for the sake of the free-dom of religion and came to Americaseeking a land of freedom.

For the sake of their search for truereligious freedom, these people leftbehind their parents, brothers and sis-

ters, and homelands. They were evenprepared to cut their ties to their homecountry as they crossed the AtlanticOcean at the risk of their lives.

When the Mayflower arrived in NewEngland in November 1620, it wasalready late autumn. While they enduredtheir first winter, more than half of the102 people who first arrived died of thecold and hunger. What was par-ticularly remarkable about themwas that many died refusing toeat the precious seeds reservedfor planting the next spring.

The Puritans strongly believedin serving the will of God in everyaspect of their lives. After takingin their first harvest, they offeredthanks to God. They first built achurch and a school, and it wasonly after that that they set aboutto build houses where they them-selves would live.

In the course of their pioneering,the Pilgrims began every activi-ty with prayer. This was truewhether it was plowing a field orfighting a war. When George Washing-ton was at Valley Forge during the Warof Independence, he must have prayedwith great desperation. In a battle foughtfor the sake of God’s will, God sidedwith America. In England, the king andthe people were united in fighting thatwar, yet in America, it was fought byGod and His beloved sons and daugh-ters. Isn’t this how the United Statescame into existence as a country advo-cating freedom of faith?

Even now, the United States Con-gress opens with a prayer. When thePresident is sworn into office, he placeshis hand on the Bible as he takes theoath of office, and a member of the cler-gy blesses him. America even prints thewords “In God we trust” on its money.America is unique in the world in thelevel of importance it attaches to God.This is how the United States has cometo occupy a unique position as a main-ly Protestant country with worldwideinfluence.

What about America today, though?Prayer in public schools is officiallybanned. The theory of evolution is givenpreference to the theory of creation ineducation. The divorce rate of around50 percent is completely obliteratingthe sanctity of the family.

In 1971, I left my family and home-land to come to America, because Iheard the voice of God sharing His con-cern about the current state of affairs

here. Upon arriving here, I criedout that I had come as a fire-man to a house that was on fireand as a physician to cure Amer-ica of disease. Even then, I dis-covered that God was leavingAmerica. It should be possibleto find God everywhere in Amer-ica, but God was departing fromthe hearts of people, from thefamilies and from the schools.It seems like only yesterday thatI stood on Fifth Avenue in Man-hattan and wept openly as I heldon to God to keep Him from leav-ing America. Unfortunately,America has persisted in goingthe way of moral deterioration,as I predicted.

Ladies and Gentlemen: I wouldlike to ask you this. Why do you

suppose Rev. Moon continues to cryout to Americans in spite of all the oppo-sition and suffering he endures? It isbecause I know better than anyone theblood, sweat, and tears that God shedin the course of establishing this coun-try. During the past thirty years in Amer-ica, I have not spent so much as a sin-gle day in comfort.

Who is the master of America? It isneither white Americans nor black Amer-icans. The true master of America is

the person who loves America as Goddoes. Also, I continue to plead with youbecause God has chosen America asthe first son, the nation representingthe elder son realm in building the King-dom of God on Earth. Even now, Jesusis spiritually present mainly in Ameri-ca, and is offering earnest prayers thathis purpose will be accomplished inAmerica.

In 1982, in accordance with the willof God, I founded The Washington Timesin Washington, D.C. Ever since then,this newspaper has led American pub-lic opinion as a conservative news medi-um showing the path that America mustfollow. Also I have pursued a strongmovement for national and world sal-vation through the true family valuesmovement and the pure love movementfor young people. I have invested inAmerica in expectation that this coun-try would stand upright before God’s

providence. When I visited America in 1965, I

blessed an area near the White Houseas a holy ground, and even today manypeople gather there and pray for Amer-ica through the night. I hope each ofyou will open your hearts and that youwill be able to hear the earnest desiresof the Pilgrim Fathers and the manypatriots who have lived in America’shistory.

Ladies and Gentlemen: the new mil-lennium that has just begun is the timeperiod in which God’s six thousand-year salvation providence is brought toan end and God’s ideal of creation isrealized throughout the cosmos. Thisperiod is also the time when the lamen-tations of creation, which lost its truemasters as a result of the fall, are final-ly over. This is the time when the Par-ent and children who have been long-separated meet again. The new Earthand new Heaven, where there are notears, are to be established. It is an agewhen there is free communicationbetween the spirit world and the phys-ical world, and when God’s Kingdom isestablished in Heaven and on Earth.

The transition moment of the startof a new millennium marks the com-pletion of the New Testament Age, thepoint at which the promises of the OldTestament and New Testament are ful-filled. The future will be a time whenGod’s realm of direct dominion willbecome apparent through His omnipres-ence and omniscience. It is an age whenthe East and West will come togethercentering on the Parents of Heaven andEarth as “one universe under God” sothat a grand family of humankind isformed on Earth. This means the per-fection of the Completed Testament Age,

in which the promises of the OldTestament and New Testamentwill be fulfilled.

The time has come. The timehas come when America mustawaken once again. It is time forthe country as a whole to createa new movement to build trueparents, true families, a true coun-try and a true world centered onGod. In this way, America mustkeep God from leaving, and againbecome a society that attendsHim. God worked a thousandyears to establish America. If Heleaves America, where can He go?

If America attends God prop-erly, all America’s problems - the

family problems, moral problems, youthproblems and racial problems - will besolved naturally. When America becomesa place where people of all races canlive together in harmony, it will be amodel for the Kingdom of Heaven onEarth.

It is time for us to unite together andopen the path that humankind musttravel. It is time for America, as theelder son nation, to take the lead inattending God and to complete its mis-sion as the helmsman that brings thenations of the world to God. I ask youto stand with me in accomplishing thishistoric task.

Again, I would like to express mysincere gratitude to you distinguishedguests for your presence here. I wouldlike to conclude by expressing my hopefor the beginning of a new millennialKingdom overflowing with peace, free-dom and justice in Heaven and onEarth. ❖

Prayer breakfasts bythe local chapter of theFamily Federation forWorld Peace and Unifi-cation (FFWPU) and theACLC throughout thepast year on a regularbasis paved the way forth i s t r emendousresponse.

Reverend Kene Holiday was inspi-rational as the earlyprogram master ofceremonies. ReverendHoliday was a star of“Matlock” on televi-sion and is now apowerful preacher ofthe Gospel.

anointing of Father Moon and thismovement for reconciliation, revival,and interfaith rapprochement.

Reverend Dr. Connie Crawford Bansaof Chicago set the pulpit and the ban-

quet ablaze with her remarks as well. “When Reverend Moon was called

by God he must have asked God, justlike Moses — ‘How am I, as a Korean

man, going to evan-gelize America?’

The Reverend Dr. Cecil Murray ofthe First African Methodist Episcopal(FAME)Church, the oldest black churchin Los Angeles, introduced Father Moonwith affection andrespect. He is well-known in Los Ange-les and throughoutAmerica as the min-i s t e r who se t up“peace headquarters”when riots broke outin South Central LosAngeles over 30 yearsago.

FAME has grownfrom a congregationof just over 300 mem-bers in 1977, to over

17,000 under the leadership and guid-ance of Dr. Murray.

After an hour or so of inspiredremarks, Father Moon read from the

prepared speech, “The Path for Amer-ica and Humanity in the New Millen-nium,” with simultaneous translationby Mr. Peter Kim.

The audience wasmesmerized, educat-ed, edified...and uplift-ed along with count-less heavenly hosts.

Little Rock, another great cityalong the Bible Belt, was the20th stop of the 51-day, 47-city “We Will Stand” tour ofAmerica. Over 700 people

gathered at the Robinson Center MusicHall.

The original church hosting the eventcanceled with about one week beforethe scheduled arrival of this crusadefor reconciliation and revival. This leftthe organizing committee in a com-pletely impossible situation, but a hallwas secured at the last moment.

One pastor who received one of 80,00leaflets handed out prior to the eventby volunteers was Reverend Della Rosa.He was curious when he saw that itwas affiliated with Father Moon anddecided to come. He was soamazed to find a preacherwho taught that the fall ofAdam and Eve was the mis-use of love.

“He is the first preacher Iever met that had this reve-lation about the fall. For yearsthis is what I believed and yetI never could find any sup-port for this. I wish ReverendMoon would have neverstopped talking. I heard thathe has 400 volumes of speech-es. I need those speeches.Where can I get those?”

The sole local speaker at

the event was the Rev. Charles E.Williams of Greater Paradise BaptistChurch. He gave the invocation.

Reverend Wendell Blair a foundingmember of the American Clergy Lead-ership Conference from Dallas wastruly inspired and stood up firmly.

“They labeled all the great religiousleaders in history. Jesus himself wasconsidered a cult leader. They calledReverend Moon a cult leader. I’m hereto tell you that I can see the fruits ofthis ministry. This is no cult. This isthe work of God! I want to ask all ofthe clergy here to join the AmericanClergy Leadership Conference. Let us

come forward now tomove this nation!”

“Reverend Moon isteaching and preach-ing for the true God,true parents and truelove,” Blair said. “Thisministry is all aboutinterrelationships andinterdenominations.”

“This is a ministryof all Christian peo-ple coming together,”said the ReverendMichael Jenkins, pres-ident of the Family

Federation forWorld Peaceand Unification (FFWPU). Rev-erend Jenkins and ReverendBlair were speaking of the Amer-ican Clergy Leadership Con-ference, which was foundedby Father Moon in May andincludes “12,000 pastors fromacross America,” according toReverend Jenkins.

When two local gospel actsdid not show up, the ReverendBlair led the gathering in an acappella version of “This Lit-tle Light of Mine” accompaniedby hand clapping, and then a

gospel tune, accompanied by a Ham-mond organ and drums.

One of the most famous choirs inthe country — the Mississippi MassChoir performed after the keynoteaddress of Father Moon.

Bishop Cody Smith gave a short ser-mon and it was then all in attendanceknew that the Holy Spirit was movingin a mighty way. After just three wordsthe whole audience was to it’s feet cry-ing out.

Praise the Lord! Some are stickingtheir toes in the water. A few are jump-ing in. The water is fine.

the Golden Touch. Mississippi likeAtlanta was totally blessed. Mississippihas our state leader and two Japan-ese families that work atthe fish restaurant. OurNew York family convergedwith the Atlanta familyand pulled a truly greatevent. The banquet hallwas packed. Before themeeting a press confer-ence was held. BishopAmzie Cotton, Rev. SatanWachstetter, Rev. Her-ring, Rev. Ron Moore, Rev.Roberta Porter, and Min-ister Eddie Muhammadwith Rev. Jenkins did theWe Will Stand press con-ference. Both TV stationsand the major Jackson newspaper cov-ered the event with the headline, “MOONMAKES “STAND” IN MISS.”

The preliminary article from the weekbefore highlighted pro and con start-ing with a detractor criticizing Rev.Moon. Bishop Amzie Cotton who is nowone of the 120. He disagreed, “I wasworked against Rev. Moon for 15 years.All the time I worked against him wasbased on what I heard others say. WhenI finally heard him, I completely turnedaround.” Father’s message was so wellreceived in Mississippi that Fathercould begin to explain about Jesus’

heart. Father began to cry. It was fromthe very heart of God.

After the speech, during the awardsceremony, Rev. Ron Moore was on thestage with the clergy at the end. Hewas at the doctor on Friday and was

told that his cholesterol was 300 andthat he had a serious ulcer. While Fatherand Mother were shaking hands withthe clergy Rev. Moore was distractedso Father tapped his stomach to gethis attention. He just called with suchexcitement. He went to the doctor ontwo days after the event. The doctordid some tests with absolute aston-ishment on his face. “The ulcer is gone!! I can’t believe it. Also your choles-terol is now 100!! It’s a miracle.” Rev.Moore immediately thought of the tapFather gave him on his stomach. Heknew from whence the healing had

come!!” Col. Don Taylor who was under-secretary for the Department of Ener-gy also honored Father and Mother. Ifyou could see how significant and patri-otic the support for our True Parent’sis throughout America you would be

totally amazed. The paper quot-ed Father as saying, “ I’ve beenthe object of scrutiny of years.I carry no animosity. JesusChrist forgave his tormentors.”The audience was melted. StateSenator Hillman Frazier sac-rificed a meeting with U.S.Sen. Ted Cochran to attendthe event. He sent wife instead.Rev. Wachstetter sacrificedhis plan to go to Russia sothat he could welcome TrueParents. America is respond-ing. The momentum is build-ing. Please keep up your

Archbishop Amzie Cotton, pastor ofGreater True Vine Full Gospel Churchof Jackson, Bishop Roberta Porter, pas-tor of Wings of Faith Church of Deliv-erance Inc., also of Jackson, ReverendStan Wachstetter, Reverend Herring,Reverend Ron Moore and Minister EddieMuhammad of the Nation of Islam alongwith Reverend Michael Jenkins of theFamily Federation all had much to say.Both TV stations and the major Jack-son newspaper covered the event withthe headline: “MOON MAKES STANDIN MISS”.

Archbishop Amzie Cotton stated tothe press: “I have worked against Rev-erend Moon for 15 years. All the timeI worked against him was based onwhat I heard others say. When I final-ly heard him, I completely turnedaround.”

In another comment later, John Han-cock, pastor of Calvary Apostolic Church

in McComb stated: “Ilove much of what theReverend Moon saysabout dismantling theforces of bigotry andhate, but that does notconvince me of thevalidity of his religiousbeliefs. For whatevertheologic faults he has,the man has a tremen-dous persona,” Han-cock said.

Jackson, MS—March 17

The Sheraton Waterside Hotelwas the venue for anotherhistoric event in the annalsof “Old Dominion” history.The atmosphere and tem-

perature down by the riverside (the Eliz-abeth River) was fine and burdens wereindeed “laid down” as spirits werelifted for approximately 900 eager,or at least, curious and hopeful, pil-grims.

Father Moon and “The We WillStand” tour moored at the dock-side, making ripples that surelyreached out to the sea.

Reverend Levy Mathew Daugh-erty, Executive Director of the Unit-ed Federation of Churches and Chair-man of the Board of the MartinLuther King, Jr. Family Life Insti-tute welcomed the gathering withgusto after a musical interlude bythe Voices of Inspiration and theVoices of Praise — the former of St.Andrew’s Temple (Church of God inChrist); the latter of the Miracle Taber-nacle Church.

Bishop Lauretta Jones, Pastor of St.Andrew’s Temple gave the invocation.

A sumptuous banquet followed, accom-panied by more heavenly music, thistime with the additional voice of PastorCynthia Chapman of the Mission ofDeliverance Temple.

Proclamations and letters of welcomewere highlighted and shared with theaudience by Mr. Peter Brown of theAmerican Family Coalition, Mid-AtlanticRegion.

A document called the “Declarationof Interdependence” written by Mr.Brown, inspired by the spirit of this

interfaith crusade, as well as a found-ing father or two was read later by Bish-op George Augustus Stallings of theImani Temple in Washington, D.C.

It was signed by all the ministers,civic leaders, and educators in atten-dance, including Father and MotherMoon. It reads in part :

“Walls of separation have no placein the springtime of God’s world. Race,culture, language and theology mustbow to the tears of love flowing fromour Creator’s heart. The Creator ofParental Love could only wish for hischildren to finally live in peace.

As Leaders of Faith, we stand togeth-er, joined by the unchanging love ofthe God who cared for all of us through-out our lonely and tragic history. Wereject the ignorance and coldness ofheart that has separated people offaith. We declare with boldness and

courage that men and women of Godmust march together into a new worldof peace and true love. We affirm withpride that all people are created by God

and are thus our brothers and sis-ters. We honor and respect the world-wide family of humankind and itsmany religious traditions.”

Special remarks were also sharedby Dr. Ray O. Jones, Pastor of theLee Memorial Baptist Church inChesapeake, Virginia as well as Dr.Wyatt Tee Walker, Senior Pastor ofthe Canaan Baptist Church of Christof Harlem, New York.

Reverend Michael Jenkins, Pres-ident of the Family Federation forWorld Peace and Unification spokebriefly as well and then introducedDr. Milton A. Reid, Founder of theMartin Luther King, Jr. Family Life

Institute and Pastor Emeritus of Gideon’sRiverside Fellowship.

Dr. Reid then happily introduced thekeynote speaker of this jam-packedevening, Father Sun Myung Moon.

Speaking extemporaneously for about

an hour — the ocean and fishing beingmentioned prominently from the out-set — he was warmly received by thecrowd of ministers and their congre-gants. His comments were both provoca-tive and familiar. Heads nodded in agree-ment with many of his words and an“Amen” or two was definitely heard.

Father Moon then read speedily fromthe prepared text, “The Path for Amer-ica and Humanity in the New Millen-nium”. Mr. Peter Kim gave simultane-ous translation.

Presentations followed these speech-es, including several gold watches toministers from Father Moon as an expres-sion of respect and appreciation. Someothers in the audience also receivedwatches or one of the other door prizesprepared by the invitation committee.

Afterwards, Dr. Vern T. Jordahl, aLutheran, was slated to read “In Searchof the Origin of the Universe”. In all hon-esty, however, he got up, faced the audi-ence and said that though he was sup-posed to read it, and that it was sure-ly an amazing sermon, too, he would

just read a couple of importantexcerpts that had caught his atten-tion. He did so, ad-libbing a bithimself, and then encouraged every-one to read the whole sermon later.

Reverend Daugherty gave someclosing remarks and Bishop Antho-ny Moses, Senior Pastor of the NewDiscipleship Church, Chesapeake,Virginia gave the final benediction.

Revs. Kim, Buessing and Groe-nendyk did an excellent jobin Providence. Father wasvery interested in the nameProvidence. Providence of

God. In his opening Abonim said, “Itmeans this city is special in God’s eyes.”Special thanks to our media team there,Bill Brunhofer and all. Another victoryin a state with very few members.Father had a lot of give and takefrom the stage with Rev. MintyDeKock a South African ministerwho has tremendous confidencein True Parents and Father’s teach-ing. Rev. DeKock kept shouting“Amen” so loud and “I believe inyou” that it really gave Father aboost. When asked how we are tobe born again Father pointed outhow big Rev. DeKock’s body is andthat he can’t go back into the womb.The audience roared. Father wasparticularly pleased in Providencebecause of the beautiful repre-sentation of all colors in the audi-ence.

Earlier that day we were inter-viewed by the main paper of Providenceand the NBC and ABC affiliate. About 7ministers joined in the press conference.Rev. Valentine, Rev. Kuma, Rev. DeKock,Rev.Valery, Rev. Buessing, former StateRepresentative Bob Ouellette and a fewmore. Bishop Baymon was the featurednational evangelist. He spoke out right-eously that this was the movement tosave the family. The other ministers wentforward one after the other, Rev. Moonis God’s prophet, Rev. Moon is the cho-sen leader to bring the races together.Rev. Moon is another Dr. King. All thesequotations were very exciting to hear asthe momentum of the conference as wellas the tour is spreading like wild fire.

Then suddenly breaking with the com-mon assessment of Rev. Moon by theInvitational Committee Members ˆ Rev.DeKock stunned everyone by burstingout “He is the Messiah”. Everyone tooka deep breath for a moment and thenhe boomed again, (His voice would bebest described as a deep, rich sonic boomtype voice, “That’s right that’s what Isaid ̂ He’s the Messiah. He’s the anoint-ed one. Jesus chosen and whether youlike it or not he’s the one. The only rea-son people are holding back is becausethey are still holding on to their old dog-mas and prejudices that will only con-tinue to divide. It’s time for the church

to let go !!” Somehow these shockingstatements are reverberating aroundthrough a shocked room until finally oneof the ministers said, “Amen!” Then every-one immediately returned to a sense ofinner strength and pride. The Providence

Journal’s headline was, Rev. Moon GoesMainstream in 50 State Tour” A quotefrom Rev. Jenkins was in caption format the side of a beautiful picture of Father.The quote said, “Years ago, you may haveheard that Rev. Moon was not very pop-ular, Times have changed.” (By the waythis tour has successfully replaced allthose old persecution prone shots ofFather that were not complimentary -Every paper in the country has freshnew complimentary photos). The firstparagraph was powerful. In a programdrawing support from the states toppolitical figures the Rev. Sun MyungMoon calls for an increase in family val-ues.”

Dr. Jorge Alveraz, Principal and keyfigure in the Rhode Island educationalsystem presented Father and Motherwith the “True Teacher Award”. The Kore-an War Veterans of Rhode Island cameout and presented Father with a beau-tiful framed collage of photos of the Kore-an War Veterans Memorial. All the vet-erans on the tour have stayed until thevery end. The video highlight of Father’simprisonment in communist prison andsubsequent refugee photos and the firstmud hut church of the Unification Churchcreates an unbreakable bond betweenthese patriots and True Parents.(Theseare the valiant men who gave their livesfor freedom, both for America and the

world. That condition gives them a baseto understand Father like no other gen-eration. )

How sad it is for God that this gen-eration could not have been the ones toSTAND with him in 1945 ˆ 1952. Their

experience of sacrifice and suf-fering is far greater than that oftheir sons and daughters. How-ever, we take comfort in the factthat a new spirit is rising in Amer-ica where Americans are comingforward, both American BlessedCouples and American Clergy whoare feeling the call to lay down ourlives for the cause of the Heaven.

I want to ask all Americans toconsider this time as one of thegreatest opportunity to set yourfamily and nations name in theheavenly scroll as those who, likethe signers of the Declaration, likethose who fell at Bunker Hill, likethose who fell at Gettysburg, likethose who died at Verdun, Bataan

, Normandy, Pork Chop Hill and Saigon.Like those who died as Christian mar-tyrs that America might live. We blessedfamilies and blessed clergy are risingtogether following the sacrifice of ourTrue Parents for the will of Heaven.

Every morning we read the Corona-tion for God’s Kingship prayers andspeech. Father says in the speech, “Ifyou die you will what?? Live.” Do youwant America to live??? Then die forAmerica. Die for the unity of Christian-ity to become a soul force that will healthis land. If you die for the will of heav-en you will never die but you will live.

The tour is only half way spent. Youstill have time. Don’t hesitate. Give yourlife for your nation and your nation willlive. I love America but my nation is indeep sorrow and trouble. Those who stepforward now to die for the nation asWashington, King and MacArthur didwill be those who can light her path intothis new Millennium. Who will hold upthis blazing torch? Who will stand togeth-er with clergy who night after night crossthe boundary that Christians have nevercrossed before. That God’s anointedleader, the leader that Jesus has anoint-ed is now before us. These 120 that areproclaiming this are paying a heavy price.Will you stand with them? Those whosacrifice as our Parents have will havegreat fortune as central blessed fami-

Providence—indeed, thatis what brought this his-toric rainbow gathering of

races and religions together ona cool March evening. “We WillStand” the national tour of hopeand reconciliation arrived onits 22nd stop with Father SunMyung Moon as the keynotespeaker. Over 400 people crowd-ed into a ballroom at the Prov-idence Marriott for a feast ofspiritual as well as physical“nutrition.”

Bishop Baymon was the fea-tured national evangelist. Hespoke out righteously statingthat “this (“We Will Stand”) move-ment was the movement to savethe family.”

Other ministers from the Invi-

tational Committee came forward oneafter another, complimenting FatherMoon as a “prophet of God” and “anoth-er Dr. King”.

Rev. Rufus Oscar Kuma, of the Liv-ing Hope Assembly of God church inPawtucket sought to reassure his fellowclergy.

“Father Moon is not trying to convertpeople to his church but is only tryingto unite various religious faiths into onecommunity.”

The Rev. Michael Jenkins, presidentof The Family Federation for World Peaceand Unification(FFWPU), called FatherMoon “a prophet reviled by many in hisown time but carrying a message of eter-nal validity.”

Rev. Minty DeKock, a South Africanminister was particularly confident inhis appraisal, declaring, “He’s the mes-siah. He’s the anointed one, Jesus’ cho-sen. And whether you like it or not he’sthe one. The only reason people are hold-ing back is because they are still hold-ing onto their old dogmas and preju-dices that will only continue to divide.Its time for the church to let go! “

Declarations of support came fromU.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee, GovernorAlmond and Providence Mayor VincentA. Cianci Jr.

Chafee and Cianci hailed Father Moonas a unifier of people. Governor Almondand Mayor Cianci both proclaimed theday as “We Will Stand Day” in RhodeIsland.

A video biography preceded the intro-duction to Father Moon’s sermon. Itincludes unforgettable images of hisimprisonment in communist North Korea,refugee photos and that of the mud hutthat became the Unification Church. Forveterans especially, it affirms their respectand a bond of common suffering thatcannot be broken or easily understood.

In his opening remarks, Father Moonstated, “providence” means that this cityis special in God’s eyes.

When asked how we are to be bornagain by someone in the audience, FatherMoon pointed out how big Rev. DeKock’sbody is and said, “He can’t go back intothe womb!”

The audience roared. He spoke extemporaneously with Mr.

Peter Kim giving simultaneous transla-tion for the most part, though often inter-jecting an English phrase or sentence.

Afterwards, he read speedily from theprepared text, “The Path for America andHumanity in the New Millennium”. Mr.Peter Kim gave simultaneous transla-tion.

“People used to say, don’t go to seeRev. Moon and look in his eyes, you’llbe brainwashed,” he said.

Father Moon urged his audience tofollow his example to “preach the truthwith courage, no matter how much per-secution they encounter”.

As the evening drew to a close, Dr.Jorge Alveraz, Principal and key figurein the Rhode Island educational systempresented Father Moon with the TrueTeacher Award.

During the keynote address, FatherMoon began to extemporaneously explainabout the heart of Jesus. Tears streameddown his cheeks. He gave it all in his mes-sage to the responsive audience.

In a local newspaper, Father Moon wasquoted as saying, “I’ve been the object ofscrutiny for years. I carry no animosity.Jesus Christ forgave his tormentors.”

After the speech, during an awards cer-emony, Reverend Ron Moore was on thestage with other clergy. He was at the doc-tor on the prior Friday and had been toldthat his cholesterol was 300 and that hehad a serious ulcer. While Father and Moth-er Moon were shaking hands with the cler-gy, Reverend Moore was distracted for amoment. Father Moon tapped his stom-

ach to get his attention.Two days after the event, he went to the

doctor. After some tests and with absoluteastonishment his doctor told him, “Theulcer is gone! I can’t believe it. Also yourcholesterol is now 100!”

Reverend Moore immediately thoughtof the tap Father Moon gave him on thestomach. He believes it had to have beenhealed at that moment.

Colonel Don Taylor who was undersec-retary for the Department of Energy alsohonored Father and Mother Moon.

In the Wyndham Wilmington Hotel,Wilmington, Delaware, the banquetroom was filled to overflowing. It wasanother warm evening of fellowshipfor those assembled to welcome the

interfaith “We Will Stand” national tour.Father Sun Myung Moon was the

keynote speaker.The invocation was given by Rev-

erend Dr. Jay Macklin followed by wel-coming remarks by Reverend MichaelJenkins, president of Family Federa-tion for World Peace and Unification(FFWPU).

Reverend Jesse Edwards of thePhiladelphia Pentecostalists preachedwith fire briefly, testifying to the HolySpirit work in the ministry of FatherMoon.

Pastor Wilbert Russell, ReverendLt. Todd Johnston (Salvation Army),Minister Robert Muhammed (Nationof Islam), and Reverend Terrance Grif-fin were recognized and each also spokebriefly.

Dinner was enjoyed with musical desertsperformed by the Sussex CommunityGospel Mass Choir led by Mr. RobertBrown and the Glorious Full Gospel MassTabernacle and Youth Choir. The Spiritand True Fellowship Praise Team werethe whipped cream.

Reverend Purnell Spicer of the Fami-ly Federation for World Peace and Unifi-cation (FFWPU) was the evening’s mas-ter of ceremonies.

Father Sun Myung Moon began hisremarks after the brief biographical videoand a thunderous ovation. Mr. Peter Kimprovided simultaneous translation.

“Who does God like most — Blacks,Asians, or Whites? Have you thought thatGod’s face has three colors? God decidesto have a universal face. What kind ofperson will God love? God’s love is true

love, so God will love a person of true love.God’s love is a unique, unchanging, andeternal love.”

“Harmony. I would like to have a har-

monious and symbiotic relationship withthe audience, but with harmony theremust also be order.”

“I am 81 years old. How many minis-ters are at least 81?”, he asked at onepoint.

Three ministers raised their hands. “Who is the oldest being in the world?

God is. God is the Grandfather of all grand-fathers, the Father of all fathers, andthe Elder Brother of all elder broth-ers.

“Can anyone say, ‘I know Godbecause I met God’? What part of Goddo you love? I have spoken with God.You may not reject that. I know thetradition of God in the spirit world.People labeled me with all kinds ofcrazy ideas—brainwasher, family break-er, etc. But at 81, I am stronger thanever because God has been with meand my work every step of the way. “

“The three most precious things arelife, love, and lineage. Which is the mostprecious? It is complicated. When we seea tree grow but it suddenly stops grow-

ing and even begins to die, we have totrim it. Life and love cannot multiplythe tree in such a way that it will beable to bear fruit. What does it take inhuman life? Lineage, blood lineage.Without having secured your blood lin-eage, you cannot have a heavenly fam-ily. Grandparents, parents, and broth-ers and sisters — we need three gen-erations. It takes lineage to form yourfamily.”

“Do we still have Jesus’ lineage orthe lineage of his twelve disciples onearth today?” No. No true lineage wasestablished ... Adam and Eve commit-ted the fall before they established the

true lineage. Their children had nothingto do with God ... When you look at theresult of the fall, God could not have hisown children, grandchildren, and fami-ly. But Satan did. Therefore, God hasbeen a God of grief and lamentation.”

“If we understand God, you have toabsolutely protect your purity. As a pas-tor, don’t you want to teach your children

this way? In the Garden of Eden, theycould not resist. Everything was lost. Nolineage, love, or life connected God withAdam and Eve. “

After his extensive impromptu remarks,Father Moon read from the preparedspeech, “The Path for America and Human-ity in the New Millennium,” again simul-

taneously translated by Mr. Peter Kim. Bishop Eric Figueroa then read

another of Father Moon’s sermonswith vigor and grace.

Flowers were presented and theEastwick United Methodist Mass Choirand Praise Team and the Gospel Tem-ple Baptist Church Choir performedin finale.

Rev. Bob Mason to do a magnificent event.Around 700 came to the ballroom. Themajority of the audience was made upof clergy. Although, for most it was thefirst time to be with True Parents or anyevent done by the Family Federation butit surely will not be the last.Rev. Harold White came fromChicago to be the tour evan-gelist. He is Dean of the Bap-tist Ministers Conference forChicago representing 1400Baptist Churches. He has avery powerful radio show onSunday morning from 9:00ˆ 10:00 am on the numberone gospel radio station. Hehosts the show along withits founder and our closedminister, the Rev. Dr. SpencerLeake. Every Christian inChicago knows about “TruthSpeaks” Dr. White did a fan-tastic presentation. He explained in veryclear terms why we need True Parentsand why we must support Rev. Moon.He explained that Jesus had brought usto liberation through the salvation of thecross. Jesus promised that he wouldcome again. It is in this context thatJesus inspired Rev. Moon to become theTrue Parent, to take on the ministry andmission of Jesus and build the family

that was lost in the Garden of Eden.Therefore this movement for True Fam-ilies is God’s movement. This was a greatway to start the movement in Iowa.

The Des Moines Register gave cover-age. The headline read, “Moon in DesMoines, Pushes Marriage as Vital.” Most-ly covering the highlight of Father’s speech.Especially about the misuse of the Love

Organs. It also stated, “Inrecent years, Moon gainednational attention for hisefforts to break down soci-ety’s racial and denomina-tional walls. His churchhelped sponsor the MillionFamily March in 2000.

Hundreds of ministerscame out. Imam Akao theMuslim leader and Ameri-can Leadership Conferencespeaker and grad was in fullsuppo r t . Imam Akaoexpressed, “I’m so happy forthe movement of Father

Moon. He is bringing Moslems and Chris-tians together and tearing down the walls.I lost my son who was murdered by agang member. I was so extremely painedand crushed by this tragedy. But Godworks in mysterious ways. God led meto take to understand that the best wayI could respond was to take the mur-derer into my home and love him andbring him to God. I did so and now the

man who took my son is now like a sonto me. God is powerful. Father Moon isbringing this kind of love to the world.”Good work Iowa. Rev. Michael Murrayof the A.M.E. Zion Church and Rev. Ben-nett who pastors an interracial churchwere recipients of the Gold Watch.

Rev. Kim from New York reported thatevery one of the 600 churches in DesMoines were called or vis-ited 3 times. They receivedour mailings. That’s whyyou could see so many whiteand black pastors there.They came out to hear theword of God. Some werejust curious, some were fas-cinated. The next morningat Hoon Dok Hae, Rev. Whiteattended from 5:50 am. Dr.White is a scholar. He real-ly enjoyed True Parentsteaching. He heard all ofthe speech on the corona-tion ceremony for God’skingship and the reports of Jesus, Moham-mad, Buddha and Confucius. He didn’tblink an eye. When asked how he feltabout the whole morning. Father Moonis a great teacher. I really enjoyed hisclass in the morning. I want to attendmore of his classes. I learned so muchabout the family.

An eager crowd of over 700 peoplegreeted the “We Will Stand” inter-faith and revival tour on its 26th

stop at the Des Moines Marriott Thurs-day night. A large majority of the audi-ence was made up of clergy, both localand national.

Reverend Dr. Harold White from Chica-go was the evening’s host evangelist. He

is Dean of the Baptist Min-isters Conference for Chica-go which represents approx-imately fourteen hundredBaptist Churches.

He also hosts a very won-derful and powerful radioshow on Sunday morningsfrom 9:00 to 10:00 am onthe number one gospel radiostation along with its founder,the Reverend Dr. SpencerLeake. Every Christian inChicago and many through-out the American heartlandknow about “Truth Speaks.”

Reverend White gave a brief, but pow-erful presentation to the assembled. Heexplained in very clear terms why weneed true parents and why it is imper-ative at this time to support Father Moonand the spirit and power of this “We WillStand” movement.

Detroit was a good old-fash-ioned fight. Rev. Plummer,who has a small TV showand a few other ministersreally challenged our min-

isters in Detroit. They claimed that every-one had been bought off and that Rev.Moon didn’t have any real support there.This caused a headline in the DetroitFree Press entitled. “Baptist MinistersUpset by Rev. Moon’s Visit”. Rev. Plum-mer mistakenly accused the hostminister of being unaware of Rev.Moon and that he was deceived. Rev.Jim Holley of Little Rock Baptist stoodfirm. He said he knew exactly whowas coming and he didn’t have thehang-ups that other narrow- mind-ed people have. He would not can-cel or change the event. This causedthe media to look twice. Our mediateam led by Dr. Linda Boyd and Rev.Schanker sprung into action. Bish-op Stallings did a counter blow inter-view that rocked Rev. Plummer’spremise. The Pastors Are with Rev.Moon. Rev. Plummer claimed thathe would stop all Christians from com-ing. The 120 ACLC ministers sprung intoaction. Rev. Wm. Revele stood very strongand helped organize the press confer-ence. Rev. Edwards, Rev. Jenkins, Rev.Taylor, Rev. Obie Matthews of the pres-tigious Cornerstone Baptist Church andRev. Tim Chambers. Every imaginablepress outlet was there. The Detroit FreePress was firing away the questions.

Rev. Revele started off strong. He saidthat the reason he supports Rev. Moonis very simple. Rev. Moon’s marriageshave less than 5 % divorce rate. How canwe, who have a 50% plus divorce ratesay we have nothing to learn from Rev.Moon. Rev. Revele was very strong. Dr.Taylor said without question I supportRev. Moon because I’ve have criticallyreviewed the fruits of his ministry andthey are good. The World Peace effort anda Religious Body at the UN. The marriageand family values movement and break-ing down racial and denominational walls.These fruits are good.

The Little Rock Baptist Church waspacked. The atmosphere was highlycharged when we arrived at the churchas three television trucks were out front.Dr. Edwards spoke, Father Moon is anoint-ed of God and his vision is right. BishopStallings was so inspiring that peoplewere jumping to their feet. Bishop Stallingsdid something that he was famous in a60 Minutes show for. He jumped on topof the pews and started preaching fromthe pews. Dr. Taylor, who is a theologianand a thoughtful preacher, made theaudience roar with laughter when, afterthe spirit filled inspiration of BishopStallings, he stated in a slow well rea-soned scholarly tone. Don’t expect me todo what Bishop Stallings just did !!

He then perfectly complimented thePentecostal spirit of Rev. Edwards andthe spirit filled righteousness of BishopStallings and gave his well-reasoned state-ment and powerful statement on why hesupports, “WE WILL STAND”. Major Chris-tian Leaders were there. Father Sayresof St. Jude Cathedral Roman CatholicChurch came upon the invitation of oneof our CARP volunteers. He said that hecame because he saw Father LawrenceFares, who is renowned in Catholic cir-cles, on the invitational committee. Hewas deeply inspired by Father’s speech.When it came to the part on the loveorgans he laughed with great enthusi-

asm.The next day, after all the persecu-

tion, the Detroit Free Press had a hugecolor picture of Father, it was very beau-tiful. The headline read, “Religious Lead-ers Call for Unity”.

Before Father spoke another greatwoman minister took the podium. Her

name is Rev. Mosey Lee Smith. She isthe pastor of the famous Huggins Memo-rial African Methodist Episcopal church(AME) in Detroit. She is an extremelystrong follower of True Parents. She gotup earlier at the press conference andmade it clear in no uncertain terms. “Rev.Moon has been treated the same way thatJesus was. He is absolutely beyond race,religion, and nationality. They tried toseparate us. They are always trying todivide us from God’s prophets. I’m hereto tell you that we will not separatefrom Father Moon. We Will Stand”.That night She gave a fiery testimony.She said, “I’ve followed Rev. Moon for20 years now. I’ve been lied on, talkedabout, cheated and mistreated but I’mnot worried. This is the will of God.God has called Rev. Moon as his mes-senger to bring the truth. I’m so happyhe’s here tonight. I’m so happy to wel-come him tonight. Glory to God.”

When True Father spoke it was asif the whole church was transformed.The opening of his speech every nightis so warm and personal that the audi-ence quickly is transformed. Father deliv-ers the key to the fall of man as a sexu-al sin each night. To my amazementFather called out to the Detroit clergyafter his very specific explanation of thesimilarity of the love organs to the snake,“Is there anyone here that still believesthat the fruit was a literal fruit?” Not oneraised their hand! Then Father says, “Ifyou believe that what I told you aboutthe fall was the truth say Amen.” TheClergy responded with great power, Amen!!!It was truly a great moment. The crimeof the angel at the fall has been uncov-ered and the clergy know the truth.

From there Father explains the suf-fering course of Jesus. How he broughtgrace through the cross and now haspromised to return. His return is now !!He sent Rev. Moon to America to carryout the will of God. To establish TrueParents and to change the blood lineage.The congregation proclaimed Hallelujah.

Afterwards Father and Mother pre-sented the Gold Watches to Rev. Revelewho was absolutely steadfast in his right-eousness. At the end Father and Moth-er shook hands with every minister thathad come upon the stage. Then to every-one’s surprise he gave a bear hug to Rev.Mosey Lee Smith of the AME church. Helifted her completely up in the air! (She

is quite thin) It was a special moment.The next morning at Hoon Dok Hae, toour surprise. the Detroit Free Press rana beautiful article on the tour. A huge,almost half page picture of Father waspublished with the headline, “Religiousleaders call for Unity.”

The half-way point of the “We WillStand” tour was as tightly woundand highly charged as a solenoid,

somehow befitting the magnetic spir-it of the Motor City.

A crowd of 1500 packed Detroit’shistoric Little Rock Baptist Church asthree television trucks stood in silentwitness out front.

Unrelated, but noteworthy, acrosstown at the Dr. Charles H. Wright Muse-um of African American History, ImamW. Deen Mohammed, the most promi-nent African-American leader in main-line Islam, was speaking on the unityamong faith groups as the key to doing

God’s work. For Father Sun Myung Moon, this was

his first visit to Detroit in 28 years, andfell on the exact anniversary of his lastvisit.

Controversy preceded the event andhad started when a small “evangelical”TV show along with a few local ministershad publicly challenged the integrity andpurpose of the tour. The claim was that

everyone had been bought off. This broughtthe headline in the Detroit Free Press,“Baptist Ministers Upset by Rev. Moon’sVisit”.

Reverend Plummer, the TV evangel-ist, mistakenly accused the host minis-ter, Reverend Jim Holley of being unawareof and deceived by Father Moon and theinvitational committee of the interfaithcrusade.

Reverend Jim Holley, Little Rock Bap-tist pastor, however, would have none ofsuch nonsense. Reverend Holley had seenand been inspired by the fruits of FatherMoon’s ministry in Korea with the Inter-national Conferences of Clergy (ICC) over10 years ago. He was so impressed withthe children at Father Moon’s “LittleAngels School” that he has started aschool himself.

He would not cancel or change theevent. No sir.

This caused quite a media stir.To add to the mixture, two Detroit

preachers, the Reverend Frederick Samp-son of Tabernacle Baptist Church andthe Reverend Eddie Edwards came outstating that they were displeased by aninvitation letter that had mistakenly list-ed them as co-sponsors of the event.

It was all good.

A Japanese women’s choir under theguidance of Tokiko Richardson, openedthe evening’s program with delicate beau-ty and grace.

Reverend Revele of the Messiah Mis-sion Baptist Church of northwest Detroitstarted the preaching off with good com-mon sense.

“This disagreeing with folks’ theologyis not accomplishing anything. We haveto find some middle ground.”

“Father Moon’s marriages have lessthan 5% divorce. How can we, who havea 50% plus divorce rate say we have noth-ing to learn from Father Moon?”

Bishop Augustus Stallings had theaudience jumping to their feet. He didsomething that he was famous for—hejumped on top of the pews and startedpreaching from there.

Dr. Hycel Taylor, an elder theologianand very thoughtful preacher, had every-one almost on the floor with laughterwhen he stated in a slow, scholarly tone:“Don’t expect me to do what BishopStallings just did!”

Dr. Taylor then noted more of the fruitsof Father Moon’s ministry: “A supremeworld peace effort, particularly the pro-posal of a religious body at the UnitedNations; a marriage and family valuesmovement as well as sincere efforts atbreaking down racial and denominationalwalls—these fruits are good.”

Reverend Mosey Lee Smith, pastor ofthe Huggins Memorial African MethodistEpiscopal (AME) church of Detroitgave a fiery testimony.

“I’ve followed Father Moon for 20years now. I’ve been lied on, talkedabout, cheated and mistreated butI’m not worried. This is the will ofGod. God has called Father Moon ashis messenger to bring the truth. I’mso happy he’s here tonight. I’m sohappy to welcome him tonight. Gloryto God.”

Father Moon’s talk remained thesame.

“The time has come for America toawaken once again.”“It’s time for the country as a whole

to create a new movement to build uptrue parents, true families, a true coun-try and a true world centered on God.”

Shouts of “Praise God!” and “Amen!”echoed throughout the Little Rock Bap-tist Church as again the message reacheda diverse and receptive audience.

At the end, Father and Mother Moonshook hands with every minister thathad come upon the stage and presentedgold watches to several for their serviceto the community.

Reverend Mosey Lee Smith was oneof those to receive a gold watch.

In gratitude and affection, she kissedthe host. Then to everyone’s delight andsurprise (including Mother Moon), FatherMoon gave her a big bear hug lifting herup completely into the air!

It was an unforgettable moment. A conference is tentatively planned in

May to continue the discussion and spir-it of cooperation and respect. It will includefaith leaders and other community pil-lars.

They will discuss problems plaguingthe community and seek their solutionsTOGETHER.

Rev. Esteban Galvin was freshoff of the victory of TrueParents first appearance inthe Bronx and Bishop Robin-son’s church. He felt the

spirit of Jesus and Heung Jin Nim guid-ing him. As soon as he arrived he feltthat there was a church prepared.When he asked the Kansas leaderswhich church would be good they saidthat there were many good ministersbut none with a church that would beproper for True Parents. Rev. Galvinfelt led directly by Jesus and HeungJin Nim. He said in 24 hours, I willfind a church. He went out drivingaround looking for the church! Hejust looked at the church build-ings. He found a beautiful, brandnew, large church called Christ’sChurch of the Jesus Hour. He foundthe pastor who had heard a lotabout Rev. Moon and yet neverattended anything. He was so right-eous however. He felt that God want-ed Father Moon to speak in hischurch. He agreed. It is a beauti-ful, brand new facility that is rightacross the street from the old church.It has brand new, carpet, pews,pulpit area. The waiting room for TrueParents still had the smell of new car-pet. It was almost as if this new churchbuilding was made just for this event.

How amazing it is to walk with God.Rev. Lee, Rev. Yujiri, Rev. Flynn andRev. Kim joined to make victory. I wasso moved, when I saw so many NewYork members that sacrificed their fam-ilies, jobs, income everything to bringvictory for our True Parents. Joan wasthere from New York, Julie Okamotoand especially all the Bronx members.Rev. Galvan has shown great leader-ship as he is fulfilling the two-pillarfoundation for our future: ChurchGrowth (in Sunday Service Family

Church membership and also in fulltime youth membership.)

He has been most successful inChristian minister outreach. His phi-losophy is vital. “I believe that if wehave good unity with our RegionalLeader and genuine love with our mem-bers” We can achieve all of Father’sdirection. His Christian minister foun-dation stretched all the way from theBronx to Kansas City, Kansas. Also,so many New York members joined inthe mobilization with the Denver region.

I also want to thank our legal depart-ment. Our national attorney, Mrs. KayeAllen also went to Iowa and workedhard. Everyone is mobilizing.

Rev. Galvin and our state leader Rev.Mary Anglin made a heavenly torna-do to prepare for our True Parents.Hundreds of ministers were contact-ed. Hundreds came. The church wasfull in a state that had been notori-ously resistant to our True Parents’message. However, the Kansas mem-bers really united together.

Rev. Russell Davis, the host Pastoris also 81 years old. He welcomed Fatherand said this is of the Lord. Jesus isbringing Rev. Moon here. Rev. MarkW., who, like Rev. Edwards,

is a white minister whois confident that Fatheris anointed by Jesus.Spoke eloquently abouthow God is manifestingthrough the mission andministry of Father Moon.

A brand new facility, itwas as if this new church

building had been madejust for this historicalinterfaith crusade. The 51-day “WeWill Stand” national tour encourag-ing people of all faiths to strength-en the family and tear down the wallsof race and denomination was in theright place.

Hundreds of ministers were con-tacted by phone, fax, and foot—hun-dreds came, bringing several of theircongregants with them.

Area clergy were also invited toparticipate in a mass choir.Father Sun Myung Moon, 81 years

young, was the keynote speaker.People followed along with the speech,

interjecting “Amen” or “I hear You,”clapping and laughing along with FatherMoon throughout. It was a beautiful,relaxed, and happy atmosphere of spir-it and truth.

Other speakers were the ReverendStanley W., founder of theApostolic Coalition, and the ReverendMichael Jenkins of the American Cler-gy Leadership Conference.

Reverend Mark W.expressed confidence that Father Moonis indeed anointed by Jesus Christ andthat he saw God manifesting through

the mission and ministry of FatherMoon.

Reverend Russell Davis, the hostpastor, also 81 years old, welcomedFather Moon saying, “This is of theLord. Jesus is bringing Reverend Moonhere.”

For the two weeks prior to the eventPastor Davis promoted the program asa “great spiritual revival,” and an “answerto the division between races and denom-inations” on his daily morning radiospot.

That “division” was evidenced stark-ly by the fact that many area blackministers had actually received hatemail from the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) warn-ing them away from the event.

Pastor Davis was confident and right-eous stating on the radio that he knewGod was sending Father Moon to helpheal this kind of pain.

Through teamwork, unity, and lotsof prayer, a victory for God and thefamily of man was won.

New and lasting friendships wereformed. Ministers and their congre-gations were reborn and revitalized.

Family Federation for World Peaceand Unification (FFWPU) members(many from Japan) had worked furi-ously to spread invitations allover the city.

Proclamations and greetingswere presented from the NewOrleans City Council, LouisianaGovernor Mike Foster, con-gressman Jefferson, State Rep-resentative Leonard Lucas Jr.and State Senator Cleo Fields.

Twenty eight members of thelegislative Black Caucus signed

a resolution commemorating the day’sevent.

A Louisiana State flag from Gover-nor Mike Foster alongwith a note of grati-tude for the worldpeace initiatives ofthe keynote speakerwere presented byState RepresentativeLucas.

The local repre-sentat ive for theNat ion o f I s l am,Dewyer Muhammad,greeted the eveninggathering on behalf

of the Honorable Minister Louis Far-rakhan with dignity.

This was an evening to break down

barriers between races and religions.Reverend Lucas called it an effort

“to bring the body of Christ together”as well.

With Mr. Peter Kim giving simulta-neous translation, Father Moon explained

to the audience that his studyof the Bible convinced him thatdifferences in skin color weremerely superficial and that thehuman family is the enginethat will reform the world withlove. He also preached for truefamily values as the solutionto many societal illnesses.

“Free sex, homosexual sex,go against the ideal of God’s

creation. Women whohave the ability to havechildren and avoid hav-ing children deliberate-ly are bound to hell.”

His words were oftencajoling as well as chal-lenging and covered awide range of interre-lated topics focused onthe family as the key toworld peace.

Not the usual com-fortable day at church.

“I don’t think anyonehas come here and given such a shock-ing or strange talk” he said.

In the end, Father and Mother Moonpresented several ministers with goldwatches in recognition of their serviceand sacrifice for the community.

After the event, Clopha Deshotel,an administrator at the University ofBridgeport, in Bridgeport, CT, and amember of the Family Federation stat-ed in remarks to the media:

urday evening program was held at theArthur Outlaw Mobile Convention cen-ter. Dr. Wesley James from the FranklinStreet Baptist Church gave the invo-cation.

The Honorable George Callahan,Alabama State Senator read a procla-mation signed by Governor Don Siegel-man commending Father Moon forhis work and commemorating March24th as “Stand Together America”Day.

He asked everyone to pray for thepeople in government.

Letters of welcome and congrat-ulations from U.S. Senator Jeff Ses-sions, U.S. Congressman Sonny Calla-han, U.S. Congressman Earl Hilliard, Lt.Governor Steve Windom, along with thoseof several other state legislators were readas well.

The Honorable Fred Richardson, amember of the Mobile City Council reada proclamation by Mobile Mayor, MikeDow. Clinton Johnson, Mobile’s city coun-cil president, presented Father Moon witha key to the city.

The city of Bayou La Batre presentedFather Moon and Mother Moon with aplaque thanking them for their “generosityand commitment to the Bayou La Batrecommunity.” This was quite remarkableconsidering the resistance that his Uni-fication movement had faced when theyfirst began building a seafood and shipbuilding business there 24 years ago.

The Hon. Donzella James, GeorgiaState Senator who had spoken at thetour’s last three stops, said she’s beencriticized by some in the black commu-nity for her association with Father Moon,but James, a devout Catholic and Demo-

crat, said the message simply speaks tothe problems of today’s families. “In Britain,they have mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease,” she said. “Here we havemad child disease and foot-in-mouth dis-

ease with our children.” Rev. Leroy Elliot and Rev. Jesse Edwards

made short but very powerful remarksabout their experiences on the trail sofar. With but two minutes each they gotthe crowd shouting “Halleluja” and“Amen”.

Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker from theNew Canaan Baptist Church, Harlem,New York, and a longtime activist,reminded everyone that Dr. MartinLuther King Jr.’s efforts started inBirmingham, Alabama.

He shared a story about two schoolgirls, one black and one white. Theywere such good friends that theywere called twins.

A second story recalled a young whitegirl who was killed in a riot. Her motherhad a remarkable attitude. Upon learn-ing in the hospital that her daughter haddied, she said her organs must be donat-ed because that is what her daughterwanted. The young girl’s heart was given

to an elderly black Methodist minister.The mother found out who received herdaughter’s heart and visited him. It wasa precious moment for both when sheasked him if she could put her ear on his

chest and listen to the heartbeat.A coalition of Muslims from

throughout the state gatheredand sat together in front of FatherMoon for the entire event. Thisincluded ministers of the Nationof Islam (NOI) from Mobile, Mont-gomery, Birmingham, Huntsville,Pensacola, Florida and Gautier,Mississippi. The American Mus-lim movement was also repre-sented by Imam Kamal Saleem,Imam Ron Ali (from the MobileMasjid of Al-Islam) and Imam

Matthew Abdullah (Prichard Masjid).These different Muslim groups have cometogether and have started having dia-logue based on the tenets of Islam andtheir love and respect for Father Moon.

Assistant Minister Fred Muhammad ofMobile remarked, “Father Moon is a trueparent to mankind. His truth is God’suniversal truth for all people.”

Bishops from the Apostolic, Pente-costal and Holiness denominations, includ-ing Bishop George Craig form Tuscaloosa,

Bishop Frank Kirkwood from Birming-ham and Bishop Cornelius Woods fromMobile were present. Father Viscardi, aCatholic priest and professor of religionat Springhill College, represented theCatholic Church.

The pre-program featured the locallyfamous Mobile United Voices Choir, whobrought the Holy Spirit immediately. TheTrue Light Praise Steppers & Dancers (agroup of young people) performed like-wise.

Reverend Jesse Edwards and ReverendLeroy Elliott lifted up the spirit with theirwords of hope and praise.

Evangelist Loretta Handy (who sangwith Otis Redding before she was “saved”)led an interfaith choir in her original song,“The World We Share”.

Reverend Michael Jenkins then intro-duced Father Moon after the showing ofa brief biographical video.

In his speech to the more than 800people assembled, he mentioned the old

conflict in which the tiny town ofBayou la Batre had attempted tokeep out the Unification Churchwhich some local and state offi-cials had dubbed a cult.

“Some 20 years ago, there wasprotest of my presence here,” FatherMoon said through Mr. Peter Kim,his interpreter. “I wonder if there’sanyone here who participated inthat?” Laughter filled the room.Father Moon scanned the room

for raised hands, but he found none. “It’s OK! You’re forgiven!” he said, wav-

ing his hand across the audience. “Thepast is past.”

Mobile, AL—March 24

Wyoming was a miracle,but that miracle camewith a price. Our sister,Olebpina Ogai, gave herlife there in Wyoming,

and as we did her seung hwa ceremonyjust one hour after True Parents land-ed, and placed in her coffin Father’ssigned program and prayer with her nameon it, we could feel that she had a des-tiny for Wyoming, that God had used herfor this purpose.

Her family was Korean andlived in the part of Russiathat borders North Korea. Atthe direction of Josef Stalin,the Korean families were bro-ken up and sent into exile.Her family was sent to Uzbek-istan with nothing but theclothes on their backs. Underthese circumstances, she wasborn. She was a wonderfulmember, who joined in 1995and served True Parents withvery sincere dedication.

She came to America onMarch 5th, hoping to beblessed by True Parents. Shevolunteered to support oureffort in Wyoming for the We Will Standtour. True Father even considered her tobe taken to Korea and placed in the WonJun where Heung-jin nim is. During theseung hwa ceremony everyone could feelan overwhelming spirit of holiness andsacrifice. Dr. C.K. Brown, who is also a

city councilman, and assistant pastor ofa Church of God in Christ in Cheyenne,was moved by her efforts for the We WillStand tour. Their church donated moneyfor her grave, and their church also vol-unteered to take care of the grave inWyoming from now on.

The Christian church knelt down to

this sacrifice, and we could feel at herseung hwa ceremony that Jesus waspresent there. This sister gave her lifefor the sake of America, to protect ourTrue Parents, and also to stand in ourplace.

The bond between Christianity, the

second Israel, and True Parents is pro-foundly deep, as we know that Jesus andthe 106 saints have been asked by Fatherto concentrate all their spiritual poweron America. We could feel the presenceof Jesus around us there. Only sacrificecan allow the Christian family to reallyfeel the movement of the holy spirit in

such a way that it causes a bindingtogether heart to heart.

That’s why we believe that, com-bined with the sacrifice of the Den-ver and San Francisco regional mem-bers, a very special victory was gainedin Wyoming. The city of Cheyenneonly has a population of around50,000. Every single minister wascontacted, and the banquet was fullwith over 500 people. Many clergy,several professors from the Univer-sity of Wyoming, and also many whitebrothers and sisters and Indianbrothers and sisters shared in theprogram.

Father gave the longest addressthat he’s given on the tour thus farbecause he truly felt welcomed. Therewas something special in the air.

Two hours and 41 minutes was hisaddress. I saw in the end one Indian cry-ing and holding hands with a white per-son. Truly heaven and earth were moved,and all the pain of past history is nowbeing resolved.

One Indian leader told me that they

had never witnessed anything like Fatherand Mother Moon. All past efforts at rec-onciliation always fell short. But they feelhope that this time will succeed. Also,Father announced in his speech inWyoming that he feels that he is a cousinto the American Indians because theycame through the Bering Strait from Asia.Father also highlighted that the idea thatsomebody discovered America was fool-ish in light of the fact that the AmericanIndians were already here. Father stat-ed that if there were white Anglo-Saxonsalready living in America, that Colum-bus would never have been cited as theone who discovered America. However,Father also called upon the Indian fam-ily to forgive and love, that we were allchildren of God, and we must go beyondthe past by serving one another.

In our press conference, a ministerfrom San Francisco, who is one of the120 Christian leaders, stood stronglywith us, professing belief in Father andMother Moon because their life work isfocused on the family and reconcilingthe races. Rev. Jesse Edwards was touchedby God that night. He has been throughso much persecution. The national headof his denomination called and ques-tioned him about what he was doing.However, Jesse’s conviction is so deepthat his denomination cannot stop him

from going forward. Rev. Edwards is going through a course

that we now see other white Christiansgoing through. At first they’re shockedto hear Father’s speech. Rev. Edwardstestified in Wyoming that when he firstheard Father speak and say “I am thetrue father and the True Parent,” Rev.Edwards confessed that when he wenthome that night he was so angry, think-ing, “Who is he to think he’s the TrueFather?” But always when he struggles,Rev. Edwards takes things to God inprayer. He testified that when he prayedthat night and the answer God gave himwas very clear: “Jesse, I’ve been tryingto tell you this for 30 years. You mustbecome a true father also. You mustbecome a true parent.” From that timehis heart opened. Slowly but surely hehas seen that each time he hears Father’sspeech, he gets a new revelation. Healso says very clearly that he alwaysbelieved that the fall of man was not aliteral fruit, but rather had to do withthe misuse of love. He said it’s widelyunderstood in the Pentecostal move-ment, but nobody could pin it down likeFather did, with specific Bible verses.

He testified that night to the Wyomingaudience, “I believe that Rev. Moon isanointed by God. You’d better believe Ido. Every single prophet that has comein history has been bitterly persecutedbecause they always bring some newteaching that breaks down some of thebarriers from the old teachings. That’swhy people get angry and that’s why theypersecute. I’m telling you that God is inthis thing. God is moving through thismovement. We are binding together aspastors, as Christians, and as men andwomen of God of all faiths, and we aregoing to bring healing to the family and

to this nation.”The crowd jumped to its feet, both

Indians and whites and Hispanics, withoverwhelming response. That’s why whenFather came to the stage he could feelthe love of God emanating from the peo-ple. He felt extremely comfortable inWyoming, where there was a great dealof suffering.

The next morning when we leftWyoming, we could feel a sense of deep

inner peace. We could imagine the strug-gles that Rev. Lee and Rev. Jim Flynnwere going through, doing six events intheir region, which only has 75 families.Wyoming itself has only 10 families list-ed on the register of the Unification Churchnational headquarters. Michael did awonderful job, the Casper Star-Tribuneheadline was “Moon cites life’s work,blessing marriages.”

Other ministers, including city coun-cilman Rev. C.K. Brown, encouraged peo-ple to be open to listen. The Wyomingpaper said, “Moon captivated much ofthe audience with a combination of humorand thunderous declarations and repeat-

ed phrases like `life, love, and lineage.’His message to support families andagainst racism was well received. Dur-ing his talk, Moon revealed his anti-racismviews using examples of polar bears,brown bears, and black bears as repre-sentative of the different races. He saidthe bears had all different colors as areaction to the environment and werenot made that way by God.”

We sincerely thank the Denver regionfor carrying such a heavy cross throughsix states, but every state in the Den-ver region has been a victory. Espe-cially we are grateful for the sacrificeof our sister, Olebpina Ogai, whoFather declared was a martyr.

The “We Will Stand” interfaithtour rounded up the faithfuland curious of the “Equality

State” at a “Little America” banquethall in Cheyenne on a brisk Tuesdayevening.

This was the 30th stop along thetrail winding through America atbreakneck speed.

At a news conference just prior tothe evening event he stated: “Theentire effort depends on the sancti-fication of the family, which began as

a formal movement in 1995 with FatherMoon’s mass weddings of millions of cou-ples. We do believe a new age has dawned.The “Stand Together” movement does notdiscriminate against single people, whocan be blessed by God.”

The invocation was given by the Rev-erend Louis Johnson of the New Begin-nings Christian Church of Casper.

Several other ministers preached,including Reverend Jesse Edwards ofPhiladelphia. His simple message got thecrowd excited and in the spirit.

Elder C.J. Brown, a Cheyenne citycouncilman and associate pastor of NewKingdom Church of God in Christ came

to hear the message of unity and recon-ciliation as did the Reverend WilliamEphriam of Colorado Springs.

The Reverend Vic Walter of the Evan-gelical Free Church in Cheyenne said heattended the event out of curiosity.

Former Natrona County RepublicanParty Chairman Marvin Emrich and hiswife Maureen came because of an invi-tation by Michael Hentrich, of Casper, amember of the Family Federation forWorld Peace and Unification.

Maureen Emrich had recently receivedthe American Century Award presentedby The Washington Times Foundation atan inaugural prayer luncheon in Janu-ary.

The keynote speaker for the evening,Father Sun Myung Moon, 81, addressedthe more than 300 people assembled withwarmth and righteousness.

John Kambutu, a professor of edu-cational studies at the Casper CollegeCenter for the University of Wyoming,spoke in favor of the tour sponsors stat-ed views against racism.

Gail Ridgely, president of Wind RiverCommunity College, told the crowd thatAmerican Indians need more equality inthe “Equality State.”

John Redmond of Arvada, Colo., broughthis family to Cheyenne for the talk. Arva-da is a 20-year member of the Unifica-tion Church (now Family Church of Col-orado) and attributed much of the con-troversy to a distrust of foreigners.

He stated to the media: “Our society’ssocial problems can be traced back tothe breakdown of the family. It is bestsolved by a connection to a religious enti-ty.”

“He (Father Moon) is saying challengingthings, but in America a lot of peopledon’t know what he thinks or believes. Ithink he provides a way of making theraces work together to restore the fami-ly.”

The city of the Gateway Archrolled out the welcome matfor the “We Will Stand”national interfaith tour.

The appearance before more than900 people at the Regal Riverfront Hotelin Saint Louis was the 31st day in the31st state of his 51-day, national tour.The theme remained constant: “Rebuildthe family, restore the community andrenew the nation.”

The keynote speaker was FatherSun Myung Moon.

A local Christian radio show pro-vided some controversy and excitementprior to the event. Reverend MichaelJenkins, president of the Family Fed-eration for World Peace and Unifica-tion (FFWPU) was interviewed on theshow and was heard to affirm the salvif-ic power that comes through the bloodon the cross.

But he was also challenging andasked: “Why is it that when a born-again man and a born-again womangive birth to children they are born insin?”

“Christian pastors are coming togeth-er because they feel that the spirit ofJesus Christ has anointed Father andMother Moon. Jesus said, Greater workswill you do than I have done. It’s becauseof the transfer of that anointing byJesus to Father Moon that this workgoes on.”

Every day on the radio they werecalling for “Christians” to unite togeth-er in protest and to try to cancel theevent. Calls went to the hotel and themedia.

The spirit of faith, hope, and loveprevailed.

Reverend Bradford of the ShilohAfrican Methodist Episcopal Churchwho was on the invitational com-mittee stood strong despite some ofthe calls he received.

He told one concerned caller andbrother: “I don’t know you, and allI do know is that now you’re tryingto advise me how to run my church,but you never even took the time tocome and visit my church. “

Reverend Bradford had walkedwith Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. andhad been through church bombingsand burnings, but he was still alarmedby the viciousness of these verbalattacks.

A special police escort was given tothe keynote speaker and the other min-isters accompanying him supportedby overhead helicopter.

The program that night was trulyone of great inspiration born throughchallenge.

Bishop Erma Canada was the pre-program emcee.

There was a choir of over 100 mem-

bers from her church and ArchbishopWest’s church that rocked the house.

Dr. Hycel Taylor expressed in hismessage to the assembled that the idealfamily that Father Moon espouses isthe model and hope for our nation andcommunities.

“Father Moon, like Jesus, doesn’tneed anyone to validate him. He is a

prophet in his own right. We can feelthe spirit of the Lord is upon him.”

Dr. Taylor said he had looked at thefruits of the ministry and found thatthe fruits were good.

“The first fruit is that of world peace.Father Moon is effectively calling reli-gious leaders together from all the worldreligions to form an advisory councilfor world leaders.

“The second fruit is the blessing of

marriage and the strengthening of thefamily. The marriage movement andthe rededication of marriage initiatedby Father and Mother Moon have hadenormous impact on strengtheningfamilies throughout America.

“The third fruit is that of breakingdown the racial and denominationalwalls. Father Moon’s support of theMillion Family March and his effortsto bring denominations together arehaving an effective impact on all ofChristendom.”

Imam Donald Muhammad, leaderof a local Nation of Islam Mosque andone of several hundred area clergysupporting the conference said:

“If America would hear and welcomethe message of Reverend Moon, thisnation would be able to have salva-tion.”

Father Moon spoke for about twohours in Korean with Mr. Peter Kimgiving translation to his impromptuand prepared remarks.

“The family unit is at the core of ahealthy community and nation,” hesaid. He and his wife have 12 childrenand more than 40 grandchildren.

When he asked who was seeing himfor the first time, almost everyone raisedtheir hands.

ised that he would come again. It is inthis context that Jesus inspired FatherMoon to become a true parent, to takeon his ministry and mission to build thefamily that was lost in the garden of Eden.Therefore this movement for true fami-

lies is God’s movement.” Imam Akao, a Muslim leader expressed,

“I’m so happy for the movement of FatherMoon. He is bringing Moslems and Chris-tians together and tearing down the walls.I lost my son who was murdered by agang member. I was so extremely painedand crushed by this tragedy. But Godworks in mysterious ways. God led meto understand that the best way I could

respond was to take the murderer intomy home and love him and bring him toGod. I did so and the man who took myson is now like a son to me. God is pow-erful. Father Moon is bringing this kindof love to the world.”

Reverend Michael Murray of the A.M.E.Zion Church and Reverend Bennett whopastors an interracial church were recip-ients of gold watches.

David Payer, tour coordinator for Iowa,stated after the event in The Des MoinesRegister: “A 50-city, 50-day tour is quitea burden, but (Father Moon at 81) feelsa powerful calling from God to call peo-ple together at this time,”

We arrived in Baltimoreand right away had toprepare for the pressconference, held atBrown’s Memorial Bap-

tist Church, were Rev. R. Lee Johnsonis pastor. He is a righteous ministerwho had not known us a long time,but who felt called by God to supportFather and Mother Moon. He receiveda flag and was moved by our mission-aries and by Father’s message. Hereceived much opposition and perse-cution, but he stood strong.

The local invitational committed, ledby Rev. Willie Ray and Rev. St. GeorgeCrosse, was outstanding in its prepa-rations and organization. Our mediateam, led by Dr. Linda Boyd and Rev.Schanker, really knew how to lift ourmessage up in Baltimore. Fox newshad a camera there, and the BaltimoreSun was present. Our interview includ-ed 12 pastors from the local area, andalso Archbishop Stallings from Wash-ington. D.C. They proclaimed that weare here to rebuild the family and restorethe community, nation and world. Torebuild the family, we are asking forthe pastors to unify their pulpits inone single powerful message from theword of God, that what God has broughttogether in marriage, let no man putasunder. Also, we are calling upon fam-ilies to join the churches, and thosechurches to join the movement to movethis nation of America to be the elderson and fulfill its role as the secondIsrael. When the church and familyare united as one, we will be able torestore our communities. The churchand family united together can reallydeal with the problems of racism, fam-ily breakdown, denominational walls.Therefore, the cutting edge churches,whether white, black, Hispanic, Amer-ican Indian, are those willing to marchacross the Jordan River and shout atthe walls of Jericho. This movement isabout shouting at the walls of Jericho.We want to tell you, the walls are com-ing down.

Archbishop Stallings dealt head-onwith the messiah issue. Is Rev. Moonthe messiah? Yes, he is. He’s the anoint-ed one. Jesus anointed him, and he’sanointing all the pastors to stand upand proclaim their messiahship. Weshould understand clearly that Rev.Moon is called by God, that we areabout a work to rebuild the family, andthat this work will only grow and mag-nify as we go around the country.

Archbishop Stallings cited the factthat Dr. King and many of the prophetsof history were always misunderstood.But as they persevered and continuedto express love, finally their messagetook hold. Rev. Moon’s message is nowtaking hold.

Rev. Levy Daugherty led a fellow-ship service. As our national vice pres-ident, he is doing a mighty work thatthe pastors can feel. He is absolutely

harmonized among all races, and heis a leader of all races. Rev. Daugher-ty’s appreciation and love for the pas-tors is very much a reason why theyare able to march across the Jordanwith us.

Rev. Milton Reid came and gave oneof the welcoming talks. He said, “Ibelieve in Rev. Moon. He’s unafraidand he’s uncompromising. He has amessage from God and he delivers itwith love. I walked with Dr. King andI saw the same kind of phenomenaoccur then. The anointing of God wason Dr. King, and the message hadprofound effect. It stirred contro-versy everywhere we went. Peopleat that time thought we would neversee the day when blacks and whiteswould sit down together at the samelunch counter. But I’ve come to tellyou that God’s will is being done.Father Moon is the one that cantear down the walls between theraces, denominations, and the fam-ilies. I stand with him and will never,ever stop. I am proud to stand byhis side.”

Rev. Willie Ray, our co-host, tookthe pulpit, and started shouting,“We will stand. We will stand. Wewill stand.” The congregation cameto its feet and the house was alive. Rev.Brown welcomed Father graciously,highlighting the fact that he was per-secuted, rejected and ridiculed evenby his colleagues and friends, but some-how he felt the spirit of God was onthis thing, that we must cease associ-ating only within our own denomina-tion.

Archbishop Stallings took the pul-pit, and we could feel something wasabout to happen. He again highlight-ed the fact that the messiah is theanointed one. He read again fromPsalms, “Did ye not know that every-one here is a small god? How manybelieve you are a small god?” Only afew raised their hands. He said, “Thenyou don’t believe the Bible, do you?There are many people with fixed ideas,and yet they don’t even know what theBible says. One of those ideas is thatwe are to be the temples of God.” Hehighlighted the fact that it was God’soriginal plan that we should be tem-ples of God and come together.

He read in Psalms, “The Lord Godsaid unto the people, ̀ Do you not knowthat everyone is to be a small god?’ Weare to be in the image and likeness ofGod. That’s why Rev. Moon was per-secuted. They think he claims that he’sGod himself. But he’s god with a smallg. God is in him.”

“Also when they hear he is talkedabout as a messiah, again, they don’tknow their Scripture. They don’t knowthe etymological exegesis of the Bible.Therefore, because they are not bibli-

cally grounded, they attack out of emo-tion and fear. They don’t know that‘messiah’ means `anointed one,’ andmany, many in the Bible carried thetitle of the anointed one. Jesus wasthe messiah, and he was certainly theanointed one. Rev. Moon is inheritingthat mantle from Jesus and standingas messiah and calling us all to be mes-siahs. He is also standing as true par-ent and calling us all to be true par-ents.”

“Therefore, I really feel that theanointing of God is on this tour. There-

fore, I want you to know that I am uni-versal. Even though I am the founderof an African-American denomination,I am universal. I’m a Baptist becauseI believe in baptizing. I’m a Methodistbecause I believe in methodology. I’ma Lutheran because I believe that Mar-tin Luther said, ‘Here I stand,’ and Iwill stand with him. I’m Pentecostalbecause I believe in the movement ofthe Holy Ghost” – and right at that timeArchbishop Stallings ran down to thefront of the sanctuary, indicated to thepeople in the front pew that they shouldmove apart, and jumped up on the topof the pew, and ran all the way to theback of the church on the tops of thepews. Then he ran back down to thefront of the church. People were shocked,but they were also very excited. Theycould feel it was not just a phenome-non of feeling but of action.

Archbishop Stallings came back tothe pulpit and said, “I introduce to youthe Rev. Sun Myung Moon.” The audi-ence was captivated spiritually, andyou could feel the same kind of phe-nomenon occurred in the early church,when people were speaking in tonguesand dancing in the Lord. Dancing inthe Lord occurred that night.

Therefore, Father came out thatnight to an enormous reception. Theclergy present had been melted as onedue to the John the Baptist messagesthat had been delivered. People couldfeel the anointing of God was on Rev.Moon. Then Father delicately won theirhearts by interlacing humor and the

word of God from the Bible with thestory of the fall of man. Finally, Fatherrevealed that the love organs of Adamand Eve covered in the garden of Edenwere the source of the fall of man, andno one in the house raised their handwhen Father asked, “who still believesthe fall was caused by a literal fruit?”I’m sure some still held to that belief,but the spirit in the room was so strongthat everyone’s heart was open andeveryone must consider.

As I talked with pastor after pastor,especially those married, I want to tes-

tify how much the wives appre-ciate Father’s message. Neverhas a preacher stood up andproclaimed that homosexu-ality and lesbianism is not themodel family of God. FatherMoon is not judging, but heis affirming what is right. Heis loving all people. The pas-tors’ wives are deeply grate-ful that Father can open thedoor to this kind of teachingin the churches, the truenature of the sanctity of mar-riage and the holiness of love.The reality of what this mes-sage is bringing, blood line-age – most Westerners believe

that love is the highest value, so whenFather asks, which is most importantout of love, life, and lineage, the audi-ence responds “love.” Father laughsand says, “No. What about lineage?”He goes on to reveal that if the Israeliteshad received Jesus, then he could havehad his own family.

In Baltimore, Father highlighted veryclearly that Jesus was a man, that ICor. 15 called him the last Adam. There-fore, if Jesus stood in Adam’s position,don’t you think God wanted to createan ideal Eve? The image of God is maleand female. Therefore, ultimately Jesusneeded a bride. We can see that in cer-tain states along the way where theChristians are truly united, this newrevelation about the meaning of Jesusand the family is being received. It’snot fully understood yet, people arenot endorsing it yet, but it is beingreceived and welcomed.

That’s why the invitational com-mittee members are preaching thisagain, confident that this message isanointed by God.

At the end of the Baltimore event,there was a real atmosphere of cele-bration. Key pastors were given awardsand recognition for their work. We wantto thank Rev. Bond and Rev. St. GeorgeCrosse and Rev. Wilks for their sup-port. Also special thanks to Rev. Lee,Rev. Lykes and Rev. Jones and theWashington region for carrying outanother successful event in God’s prov-idence.

On August 1st in 1999, TrueFather called the Japan-ese National Messiahs tothe Americana Hotel inNaberike, located in the

Paraguay River valley and gave a direc-tion to cultivate and pioneer the landof Leda, which according to Father isthe most difficult place inPantanal. Leda belongs tothe Altoparaguay State,whose capital is Olimpo inParaguay. It is locatedapproximately 80 km upriver from Olimpo. The landwe own is about 80,000hectare (20km x 40km), andit used to be a pasture wherecattle were grazed. Howev-er, due to several occasionsof severe water damage fromthe flooding of the ParaguayRiver, people gave up onusing this land as pasture.Therefore, it was left aban-doned and had gone to ruin.Leda was not prepared forhumans to live a regularnormal everyday life; nofundamental infrastructureexisted. There was no elec-tricity, the water was drawn from theriver, and of course there were no tele-phones. Also, the roads were not repaired,and the only transportation availablewas by boats.

Several people who had worked for

the previous landowner had remainedand still lived in the area. Into such aplace Mr. Gentaro Kajikuri and sever-al other Japanese National Messiahsarrived as a first pioneering troop lastyear and began their pioneering workin mid August. They began apioneer life with a purpose toresearch the land and to sta-bilize at least the fundamentalliving conditions. They lived ina building with pigs. It had goneto wrack and ruin and when itrained, the ceiling leaked. Con-stant battles with poisonoussnakes and poisonous ants anddaily struggles with mosquitoesthat would attack day andnight...this was the start of anew life in Leda. Sometimes ajaguar, locally called “MonstrousOnsa,” would appear at nightin a nearby location and attackthe sheep that were kept, andwe would spend many sleep-

less nights.In September True Father appoint-

ed Rev. Takeru Kamiyama to be theleader of the Leda pioneering project.On October 1st Rev. Kamiyama and 14members established a Holy Ground

in Leda. This was the official start ofthe Leda building.

In order to secure fundamental liv-ing conditions along the river, the Japan-ese National Messiahs began their phys-ical labor work to renovate the build-

ing and build a landing place (a wharf)where boats could arrive—all underthe terrible hot weather of more than40 degrees centigrade. None of us wereused to this. Beads of sweat were con-stantly dropping, and the bodies over-

heated. The pioneers would often jumpinto the river with their clothes on inthe midst of their work in order to cooltheir heated bodies. True Father hadtold them, “Indeed, we are construct-ing a base here. Shovel the land. Sweat

under the hot weather andbecome the best and thefirst-class laborer. Work andbuild a land where Heav-enly Father can be liberat-ed from the very place youare standing. Invest yourutmost sincerity in yourlabor more than anythingelse. Even if you die, whatregret you will leave behind?”As instructed by True Father,we worked desperately andmost seriously to becomethe best and first-class labor-ers.

In order to make cement,we mixed sand, gravel,cement powder and waterwith a shovel. In this waywe made clay. Holding ham-mers unskillfully, we repairedthe housing, and gradually

the basic living conditions were beingestablished. In the begin-ning, there was no elec-tricity or clean water sup-ply, so we washed ourfaces in the river, washeddishes in the river, andmade drinking water byboiling the river water tosterilize it. The toilet wasalso a quite simple one—and we used it all thewhile worrying about get-ting attacked by a poi-sonous snake. In contrastto the difficult struggle ofour daily life, however,we would see the beau-tiful running stream ofthe river during the day,and at night we would besurrounded by the hugestarry sky. It was a lifeembraced in the great nature, being sofar away from the busy life of civiliza-tion. Without realizing it, in this kindof environment our spiritual sensitiv-ity was gradually enhanced, and webegan to feel the presence of Heaven-ly Father so closely. As True Fatherdescribed, this is an original, victori-ous holy place. Indeed, the Pantanalhad been preserved and protected byGod and never until now had humansstepped into this area. Jackare (alli-

of God’s creation with all the senses.We felt that we could understand

and taste the realm of True Father’swords which he spoke in Olimpo: “Whenhuman beings live with the nature,human spirituality returns to normal-cy.” Indeed it was so.

The purpose of the Leda develop-ment is to build this most difficult placeinto an ideal model city where every-one yearns to live. Therefore, the taskis how to establish a society in whichhumans and nature co-exist and livetogether while preserving and protect-ing the natural environment. Our chal-lenge is to protect the nature that Godcreated and cultivate the land so thathumans can live, without repeating thepast developmental mistakes of destroy-ing the creation.

There are quite a few people amongthe residents of Pantanal in Paraguay,where Leda is located, who do not havethe minimum necessities of life. Thusit is an extremely poor area. Accordingto research done in 1996, about 69.9%of the

families live in an environment thatis not equipped with a proper house orfurniture. 82.2% of residents do not

have their own toilet. 43.3% of the res-idents cannot send their children toelementary school. Therefore, we aremaking efforts to help develop the liv-ing standard of Leda through increas-ing communication with the neigh-boring towns and villages.

Upon starting the project of build-ing a model city in Leda, we hired somepeople from the neighbor villages, specif-ically Paraguayans from the capitalOlimpo, Indians from Eranza in theupper reaches and from Poloken in thelower reaches of the river. Throughworking together, we could develop afriendship with people who reside inthe neighboring villages. Including theJapanese National Messiahs, we wereall together 100 people to begin theproject. In the beginning, there weretimes where it was difficult to work inharmony and unity due to differencesof language, culture and customs. How-ever, they saw that the Japanese, whoare all over 50 years old, work harderthan the local workers from early morn-ing to late night every day with tannedand sweaty faces. Also, the effort of theJapanese members to love the localworkers gradually moved their hearts.Over time, we became one communi-

ty of family that is beyond the differ-ences of language and culture.

When we began, the place was bar-ren, covered with more than 2-meterhigh thickets all over. How-ever, after one year of build-ing and working, it hasbecome a clean plain withquite a few buildings. Nowthere is a boat house at thebands of the river to manageeight motorboats, and also abranch station of the navywas built at the riverbank.There used to be a naval postin Leda some time ago, whichpulled out and half the build-ing was deteriorated anddestroyed. When Rev. Kamiya-ma met with the navy com-mander, he told him of ourplan of building a naval sta-tion. The commander was very happyto hear that. When the naval stationwas completed last November, the com-mander’s family as well as the execu-tives of the navy came from Baianegu-ra, where the Headquarters of the navyof the Chaco region is located, and con-ducted an opening ceremony. Duringhis speech in this ceremony, the com-mander expressed his deep gratitudeto the Japanese people who came allthe way from Japan to work for Paraguay,and he paid a special heartfelt respectto Rev. Moon, who had sent these Japan-ese people. The commander was deeplymoved by our unconditional heart, whichdid not expect any return for our work,and he attended the Hoon Dok Hae con-ference in Asuncion, the capital ofParaguay, in order to hear the ideas ofRev. Moon. He testified to us in frontof the VIPs at this conference.

In addition, a generator room thatcould generate electricity was thor-oughly furnished, and now there areutility poles alongside the well-arrangedroads from the harbor to our lodgings,furnishing bright lights at night. Cur-rently there are a lodging for the work-ers, a lodging for the Japanese, a guesthouse for visitors and a bungalow, aswell as sheds for various animals, suchas pigs, cocks, dogs, sheep, pigeons,wild boars, etc. 80 cows and 50 hors-es are pastured in a pen, which exist-ed as before.

A beautiful public building for TrueParents, on which we began workinglast spring, was also completed. Wellharmonized with the surrounding nature,this graceful mansionhas become quitefamous in this area.We were able to wel-come True Parents onNovember 30th andconducted a dedica-tion ceremony. TrueParents were verypleased and namedthis mansion “Sui-issou.” True Fatheralso wrote the words“Unity of Pure Love,Living Blood, Mindand Body” for dedi-cating this drawingto the Hoon Dok Haeroom.

True Parents vis-ited Leda three timeslast year. When they

came in January,True Father saw the well-tanned

faces of the Japanese National Messi-ahs and looked so happy. He narrowed

his eyes and said, “You are working sohard. That’s so good.” When True Par-ents came in May and November, thelocal workers gave a full bow, and TrueFather spoke to them for two hours.Since Rev. Kamiyama always testifiesto the True Parents through our dailylife together, the local workers came tohave a very deep respect towards TrueParents.

When True Parents camehere in November, TrueFather said that the Japan-ese and the local workersare brothers: the olderJapanese National Messi-ahs the elder brother, andthe young local workersthe younger brother. Thenhe conducted a brother-hood ceremony for us. Inaddition to constructionwork, the Japanese mem-bers in Leda are also exper-imenting with growing veg-etables and planting trees.

We are researching hardin Pantanal in order torespond to Heaven’s desireto find solutions to theproblem of the world hungerand the lack of oxygen onthe earth.

Due to the warm climate, vegetablesgrow fast and there are many differentkinds that are growing quite well. Thisgives us much hope for the future. Rightnow the vegetables we grow are plen-tifully decorating our tables to feed usJapanese members as well as the local

workers.Besides the activities in

Leda, we also visited a highschool in the state capital

of Olimpo, made a financial contribu-tion for the renovation of public insti-tutions, and made a donation of booksto the library. Also, we donated books

and writing equipmentto schools in Esper-

anza, the neighboringvillage in the upper

reaches. Moreover, we brought studentsand a youth volunteer group from Japanto Boroken, a neighboring village in thelower reaches, and accomplished therenovation of the school with the localpeople. Young Japanese people, whoare in their 20’s, told us of their reneweddetermination to serve the world byexperiencing a small village of Indios

with a completely different life envi-ronment and seeing the smiles of localchildren, even under such poor and dif-ficult circumstances.

Our other project deals with a waterproblem. Until now people residingaround the Paraguay River were drink-

ing waterdirectly fromthe r i ver.Th i s wasc a u s i n gm a n yh y g i e n i cproblems,especiallychildren’sdiseases. InLeda aswe l l , t h ewater fromt h eParaguayRiver wasc l o u d e dwith smallp a r t i c l e sand carriedmany sani-

tary problems. With a desperate desireto create clean water, Rev. Kamiyamaand all the National Messiahs beganresearch and study, and finally at theend of last year we were able to creategood, hygienic, clear water. We will fur-ther improve this water system andplan to install it in the neighboringtowns and villages. Simultaneously, weare currently building an educational

training center. Once it is accomplished,we will be able to offer opportunitiesfor the youth from the advanced nationsto come and experience the nature ofPantanal, feel God, do volunteer proj-ects in the local villages and work andsweat together. In this way, I believethe youth can experience a sense of sol-idarity among each other and build abond of heart, which is being lost inthe lives of the modern advanced nations.

They can fully enjoy the horseback rid-ing, fishing and soccer in the greatnature here, and I am certain that thisplace can be a place for people to dis-cover their original nature, which is dif-ficult to do in the environment of con-crete buildings in advanced nations. Ithink that this place can also be usedto gather local youth and give them notonly the spiritual and moral education,but also training in farming, forestry,fishery, as well as an opportunity forcultural exchange. The planned datefor its completion is July of this year.

Already a year and half has passedsince we began the Leda developmen-tal project. It has been going steadilythanks to the financial support of theJapanese National Messiahs all overthe world as well as many supportiveindividuals. We are aiming to furtherdevelop not only Leda but also the liv-ing standard of people in the neigh-boring towns and villages. We will alsoproceed in building a model farm, pro-mote planting trees, and begin prepar-ing for an ecological tour. ❖

This poem by Continental Director Chang-Shik Yang was read at the Seung-hwa Cer-emony for Alevtina Ogai. She was a memberfrom Uzbekistan who came to American towork in Wyoming as a volunteer for the vic-

tory of True Parents’ speaking tour. Alevtina was bornon December 29, 1951 to Korean parents who had beenforcibly exiled from their homeland to Central Asia in1937 as a part of Stalin’s ethnic purge.

Educated as a mechanical engineer and fluent inseveral languages, she was a respected communityleader when she joined the Church in 1995. She nevermarried, preferring to wait for a deeper understandingof life and a man of purity. Alevtina was matched to anAmerican member and arrived in the United States onMarch 15th—seven days before her passing into thespiritual world. She immediately went to Wyoming andbegan working for the True Parents’ 50-state speakingtour. Due to a fatal heart attack Alevtina passed awayin the Wyoming church at 7 p.m. on March 21st. Withpermission from her family, her Seung-hwa Ceremonywas held March 27th at 3:30 p.m. Dr. Chang Shik Yang,who was attending True Parents as they arrived fortheir speech in Wyoming, officiated at the ascensionservice.

Alevtina worked day and night along with the sup-port staff from San Francisco and that region for thevictory of the Wyoming program. When True Parentsreceived the report of her passing, they reacted with asincerity of love and personal concern that was aston-ishing. At first True Parents considered having Alevti-na buried at a Won Jon in Korea. Ultimately though,they gave permission for the Seung-hwa Ceremony tobe held in Wyoming as an official American HSA-UWCCeremony.

At the same time, Rev. C. J. Brown of the New King-dom Church of God in Christ who along with membersof his church learned of the passing of this missionarysister decided to make Alevtina a saint of their church.Rev. Brown attended the Seung-hwa Ceremony andalso gave a monetary offering from his congregation.Rev. William Ephraim of the Progressive Church of Godin Christ in Colorado Springs also attended the cere-mony and offered his dedication. He mentioned thatJesus was working from in the spirit world, cooperat-ing with True Parents, who are laboring to rebuild Chris-tianity.

We pray for Alevtina who has gone as an offering forthe victory of the True Parents’ speaking tour, hopingthat she will be a precious example for members in theUnited States and throughout the world.

speaking tour, choosing Wyoming, the weakest state.Then one day, March 21, 2001, you were smiling and

running to visit Christian ministers,

When at seven o’clock that evening darkness sudden-ly surrounded you.

In one final hour, you fought alone with no one around.

The pain in your heart that you alone experienced, Clutching your breast and as you fell to the ground in

pain, Crying out to Heaven and fetal-like on the Earth. How afraid you must have felt. Did you tremble

in fear? Were you scared?Oh, the heart that you gripped as you strug-

gled and rolled in pain,That was the heart of a people broken in

two.It was the heart of the Father who car-

ried a wounded heart for six thou-sand years.

Oh, shikku, who went directly on thepath to heaven,

Clutching that heart,And not leaving behind so much as a

When I heard the news in KentuckyAnd reported to Parents with a trembling

heart, Father gazed quietly at the distant moun-

tains, saying,“Yes, these things will happen.” I can never forget the look in his eyesAs he gazed out the window, trying not to show his

pain.

Oh, daughter!Oh, beloved daughter of Heaven!Yes,It is a path that you had to take sooner or later.Yes,It is a path that we must all take at some time.Only life doesn’t let us know when or where we will set

out on that path.Alevtina!I’m reminded of words that Father spoke at East Gar-

denWhen the tour was about to begin.“The fifty-state speaking tour is a matter of life and

death,” he said,“After this tour, I will either go to my homeland or to

the spirit world.”

If someone had to go, it should not have been you.There was one person who, as he set out on this tour,Embraced a smiling child not even a year old,Took a look at his older children as they slept, andLooked at the children’s pictures displayed around the

home.His message to his wifeWas a silenceFar more eloquent than any words by a soldier going

into battle.A general setting out on an uncertain path, a battle-

field from which he did not expect to return.With the determinationOf Admiral Yi Soon-shin, who in his heart cut off the

heads of his wife and childrenSo he would have no reason to return,And penned the words, “To seek life is certain death;

to seek death is certain life”As he defended his country.

When the lights suddenly went outDuring the speech in Minneapolis, And an opaque darkness surrounded Heaven,I reacted in an instantTo throw my body into the darknessSo as to protect Father. Thankfully, it was just a prank by drug-clouded kids

seen earlier loitering around the church.

The senses I once used in the student movement tofight tear gas and see through the opponents’ strat-egy

Immediately had me looking in all directions for theenemy’s next attack.

What would they do next?

Would there be rocks, bullets, or bombs?Father, standing firm like a guardian pole, never lost

composure.A dozen gowned clerics and veterans of the Korean War

protected himAs he continued to read his text by candlelight.Those twenty minutes

Seemed longer than twenty years, or even tentimes that again.

Shortly after that situation ended well,And calm returned to the tour,What is this we have now,Alevtina?I never dreamed this would hap-pen to you,Daughter of Korea,Born in one foreign land andbringing yourself to another,How could it be that you havegone?You have gone to the place whereyour natural parents wait. Your father and mother who could

not stand to leave you alone,They were tossed out into a frigid

Siberian snowstormBut survived despite the dire cir-

cumstances.

Yes,I am proud of you.Daughter! Sister! Shikku! Beloved!Create a tornado, and go on the path of the Parents,Not leaving so much as a speck of dust behind.We raise a flag of commemoration to honor your noble

filial nature.America will lower the Stars and Stripes,And I, in the name of the Continental Director of Amer-

I started as a Cub Scout DenLeader in 1997, when myoldest son was of the ageto join. It was naturalfor me to carry on atradition that began70 years ago whenmy father joinedScou t ing . Heachieved the EagleScout rank and laterbecame a Cub ScoutLeader, inspiring meto reach the Eagle rankas well. My love for kidsand my desire to give some-thing back to Scouting madeit easy to volunteer. I also saw it asan important part of blessed chil-dren’s upbringing, and as a practi-

cal yet significant contribution to thecommunity.

I soon found that this was not tobe the Scouting experience I grew upwith. The values of Scouting haveremained remarkably consistent evenin the face of public opposition, butthe social environment has changeddramatically. When I started with tenScouts, five had single mothers, clear-ly in need of a good male role model.Besides this obvious need, however,

there was a general lack ofappreciation for the ben-

efits of Scouting. When I was a Cub,

Den Leaders werecalled Den Moth-ers, because moth-ers normally stayedat home and hadtime after schoolto hold den meet-ings. Now, most

dens must meet inthe evening and com-

pete with an increas-ingly busy schedule of

sports, clubs, and homework.Kids face pressure from peers forwhom Scouting is just not cool. Formany parents, it’s just another bur-

den on the agenda. Over time, our den dwindled to

seven, three of whom were blessedchildren. With the support of threeblessed families I gained a lot of con-fidence that I could make a positivedifference in the life of each boy. Aslong as I planned each event withenough fun to keep them interested,I found them ferti leground for charactereducation as well as skillstraining. Scouting pro-v i d ed the med iumthrough which to extendTrue Family Values intothe realm of publ icbehavior and relation-ships for youth.

I can vividly recall asmall experience thatgave me a powerful les-son as a Scout. I haddone something clearlywrong when I was caughtby the Troop Leader. Heasked me why I did it,and all I could say was, “because theother kids did it.” He knelt down tolook me in the eye, and ran his fin-ger down my backbone. “This is whatmakes you different,” he said quiet-

ly, “your spine.” I may never knowif I’ve had such an effect on anyone’slife as that simple statement had onme. But I do know that I don’t haveto be perfect to have a positive influ-ence on the world around me, I justhave to be involved.

The quote in the first paragraphabove is from the Boy Scout Hand-

book, Eleventh Edi-tion, p. 376, in asection entitled“Sexual Responsi-bility”. In the FifthEdition that I usedas a Scout, thereis no reference tosex. Times havechanged. In ourefforts to changethe present withthe new Word, wecan increase ouraudience – andinfluence – by ally-ing with the endur-ing institutions of

Over the last 6-7 years agroup of parents have beenlearning, mostly by trialand error the ins and outsof imparting the theology,

experience, wisdom and teaching of theDivine Principle to our children. In thisarticle, I want to focus on very practi-cal issues instead of a theological trea-tise or a DP oriented article relating tothis time in the providence. These issueshave been addressed by many morearticulate and experienced than I. Ihope these practical issues will be use-ful to others in thinking about start-ing their own programs and activities.

Our Experience

We began 6 years ago with ninefamilies in tents at a run down camp-ing resort. The cost per family was$35/family for the camping spot. Eachfamily brought their own food and didtheir own cooking. We had three lec-ture groups 4&5 year olds, 6&7 yearolds and 8 and up. There were craftsand quite a bit of time for kids andadults to socialize.

The next year we moved to a dif-ferent camping resort, attracted 14families and had around 35 kids. Thiswas still tent camping and only threedays.

Next year, we decided to try a weeklong Youth Camp along with our Fam-ily Camp at this same resort. Thisresort had an old, large, but functionalfarm type building that could house60-70 people. This workshop endedup having 54 kids from 4th-9th grade.The Family Camp had around 30 kidsand 8-9 families.

In 1998, we moved again to a StatePark to use one of their campgroundswith cabins and the works. This was ahuge step. We ended up having 94 kidsin two different lecture groups (one for4th-6th grades and another for 7th andup. The Family Camp had 14 familiesand around 50 kids. Their lectures werein two age groups as well. All in all wehad around 200 people in this one area.It was an amazing experience.

The next year, 1999, we made a majorpolicy change in the structure of Camp.We made it a Family Camp, which forall practical purposes, meant that atleast one parent was required to attendand work in a staff position. In fact,the staff was completely composed 100%of parents. This had several positiveresults. It gave us a staff of over 70 peo-ple, it made the Camp an experiencefor the entire family and it made it eco-nomical to run.

In 2000, as our article in the previ-ous U-News indicated, we were forcedto use a different facility. This turnedout to be a blessing in disguise. Itinvolved members from West Virginiaand Ohio and six other states. The logis-tical problems in organizing this Campin an area of the State we were unfa-miliar with and we had to transport allour stuff 5 hours to the Camp forcedus to plan even more carefully than wehad in the past. The entire Camp wasorganized better than it ever has andthe spirit was wonderful. This was real-ly our perfection stage at this level.

Why the Whole Family?

We believe that a Family Style Campprovides a complete experience for each

member of the family. It allows for theworkload to be shared among a largegroup of people. It fosters a strong senseof community among the participantswhich carries over to their activitiesthroughout the year and it provides aconcrete example of what True Fami-lies are all about to our children andto each other. This is a practical exam-ple of what the Family Federation canstand for and offer to others as well.Finally, this seems to be a trend in theoverall movement with families encour-aged to attend workshops in Korea andBrazil.

Getting Dads Involved

Mothers are naturally involved inthe daily care and raising of their chil-

dren. Prior to changing our Camp to aFamily model we found a very directrelationship between families wherethe Dad was directly involved at Campand those that were not. For those fam-ilies where Dad’s were involved, thekids had a secure relationship withGod, trusted the advice of their par-ents, their choice of friends reflected agrowing relationship with God and theyexcelled at school. Dad’s matter, espe-cially as kids reach puberty. Fami-ly Camp naturally involves Dads inthe experience.

When parents drop offtheir kids at a Camp thereis an unspoken expectationthat others will somehowimpart the religious values andtraditions to the children that theparents have not. This is virtuallyimpossible. In the past I’ve hadparents drag resistant kids to Campand ask us to help “save them” fromthe fallen world. At a Family Camp,the Family and other families createthe bonding of an extended family offriends in a religious community. Thisis real to children and they want toreturn. I do think there is a place forCamps and activities not involvingparents on site, but I think this ispreferable to teens 14 and up andwith a solid grounding in their faith.The Pure Love Alliance (PLA) andReligious Youth Service (RYS) arewonderful examples.

I’ve seen lots of adults cometo Camp with their families withthe thought that it was primari-ly for their kids. What often hap-pens is the parents are inspired and

take that inspiration back to their com-munities and get involved in local efforts.If local church leaders want to get morepeople involved in their work, a Fami-ly Camp is a great way to provide themotivation and inspiration. At Camp,we provide opportunities for individu-als to contribute in a variety of ways.No volunteer effort is too small. This isan effective strategy I would encourageothers to use. In the same way thatparents fold their children into theirown life of faith and lifestyle, familiesare folded into a community by sharedexperiences and commitments.

Timing & Finding a Place

When I’ve talked to others about thisthe usual response is, “Well, you havea special talent at doing this.” Or, “Howin the world did you get permissionto do this?” My response has been toquestion # 1, “Perhaps, but we havebeen learning as we go and anyway,we get a lot of good people involvedand the burden is not too heavy onany one person.” To question # 2, myanswer has been, “When did I needpermission to teach my own childrenmy faith?” Inertia and lack of confi-dence is the biggest problem in get-ting things going.

One important issue in establish-ing a Summer Camp is finding a loca-tion. My rule of thumb is start oneyear in advance. Six months is theabsolute minimum. It’s importantbecause you need as much time aspossible to let people know what yourplans are, do they can make theirsand get involved with you. Also, thebest and cheapest facilities are bookedup long in advance of the summer sea-son.

Where should you look? Try camp-ing resorts, your state department ofenvironmental resources (the peoplewho run your parks and campgrounds),the boy and girl scouts, churches andorganizations like granges, volunteerfire companies and non-profit organi-zations like The Appalachian MountainClub, the Sierra Club and the like. They

often have facilities for rent orknow of those that do. Reli-gious communities such as

the Mennonites, Quakers andothers often have retreat sitesavailable for rent.

In the past, our movementalways purchased proper-ties. This seems like thebest idea, but I do not advo-cate this strategy. It is very

expensive to maintain facil-ities, pay the full time staff,

insurance and so on. Even theGirl Scouts with millions of mem-bers and vast resources havetrouble maintaining their facil-ities. Our camp last summercost a total of around $900 fora week. We had close to 200

people utilize it, so the costwas approx. $4.50/personfor the week. When we weredone, we cleaned up,turned in the keys and left.When there were problems,

we called their mainte-nance people and itwas their problem. Thisis definitely the way togo; unless the local

church community candefinitely afford the expense

of it’s own facility without making thecost prohibitive.

In Pennsylvania, there are five state-supported parks with facilities appro-priate for Group Camping, Hickory Runin Eastern PA, French Creek near Read-ing, Laurel Hill approximately 1 houreast of Pittsburgh, Raccoon Creek westof Pittsburgh and Blue Knob near StateCollege. These facilities have the capa-bility to serve our community from NewYork to Ohio and south to Washington,DC and Virginia. Your state may havesimilar facilities.

Recruiting People

Our philosophy has been like cast-ing a play. You first have to determinethe types of “parts or roles” you need,define them and search for the bestpeople you can find. The parts for theworkshop are lecturer, coordinator/songleader and group leaders. For the Campstaff, you need someone overall to recruitpeople, make the financial plan andmake sure everything works. You needa reliable person to plan the meals andyou need a few people to pitch in tokeep the place clean and just get thingsdone. If the workshop is small, peoplecan fill several roles, but it is very help-ful, no matter what the size to haveroles designated.

We began with a few other commit-ted couples. I have often told peoplethat our workshops are really only formy kids, “I just need the others to roundout the experience.” This is not com-pletely true, but what is true is thatparents want what is best for their chil-dren. If you make it as easy as possi-ble to get involved and send their kids,they will respond.

I never ask people, “Can you help.”I try to ask them, “do you think youcould help organize sports for the work-shop?’ Some people are willing and ableto do pretty much anything; others areonly comfortable in specific roles.

In recruiting, I look beyond the imme-diate geographic territory or churchorganization or structure. We have hadpeople from Minnesota to Maine to Geor-gia on our staff. We began with peoplewe knew who had the following char-acteristics: they had experience in thearea we wanted them to help in, i.e.,lecturers, cooks, song leaders, etc. Theyare reliable people, when they say theywill do something, they will do it. Theyoften do not have an essential or prov-idential role in the movement. Why thisone? Well, we needed people who wouldbe available to us, no matter what.Church leaders have so many respon-sibilities and commitments; they areoften unable to fulfill their roles. Notthat there heart is not there; they justhave a lot on their plates.

As one sister shared with me, “Ineed someone who, if True Parentsarrived at the exact moment they wereleaving for Camp would say to them,‘here at the keys, help yourself to what’sin the fridge, I’m off to Camp and willbe back in a week.” I think Father wouldsmile and send them on their way.

Our experience has also been thatif you get parents to organize the Sum-mer Camps and let the leaders partic-ipate as they can, they are very happyto have the opportunity and often dosomething.

Camp Experience in Pennsylvaniaas possible. There is no paid staff ofany kind and no long-term commit-ments in terms of buildings, etc. Foodtypically costs $3.50-$5.00/day/per-son. Add another $25/person (not perday-for the entire workshop) for song-books, crafts and miscellaneous stuffand you have everything except the costof your facility. These are the essen-tials.

It is vital to keep the workshop asaffordable as possible and to give fam-ilies 3-6 months notice of when it willoccur so they can make financial planswell in advance. It is also importantthat you get a commitment from peo-ple in terms of a deposit, early on soyou can make the necessary plans. Peo-ple appreciate advance planning andwell-organized activities. When you pro-vide this, they are happy to spend themoney to send their children.

Safety Issues

Anytime you get a group of kids togeth-er, they will want to wander off, seekadventure and they are not experiencedenough to recognize a dangerous situ-ation when they encounter it. The olderthe kids the more this is true. Teensfeel invincible and can show remark-able bad judgment in this area. The #1 hazard is water. No swimming aloneand no swimming without a lifeguardpresent. This is an absolute rule. Get-ting lost is a problem as well. This iswhy groups with enough adults andleaders are essential. We provide eachgroup leader with a whistle, and instructevery adult to think and act as if of eachchild is his or she own. They have theright to call kids on stupid and dan-gerous activities. Poison ivy can be aproblem as can bee stings, but thesecan be treated.

Bigger is very often not better. It isimportant to focus on providing a qual-ity experience for every child. I thinkthat 125-150 kids in any one workshopare as big as any should be. Larger thanthat and there is too much herding ofkids involved and the logistics tend torule the day, instead of inspiration andspirit.

Curriculum and Teaching Goals

We stick with the basics here. Forkids up until the 8th grade, we stickwith basic 2-3 day workshop material.This happens over a 5-day period. Forolder kids, who have heard DP severaltimes, more emphasis can be placed onprayer, life of faith, etc. If you find expe-rienced lecturers, theywill know what todo. We keep the lec-tures to a maxi-mum of 45 min-utes and have nomore than 3 perday. Our goal isto help the chil-dren experiencethe DP as theirown, to take own-ership and makedecis ions andcommitments basedupon the i runderstanding

of it. We alsoprovide opportu-

nities for them toexperience God’s Heart

i n a pe r sona l waythrough prayer. Our

candlelight prayer service always ratesas one of the top experiences for kids.This is so much more powerful thanjust doing what Mom or Dad says.

Our High School kids havegrown into very effective groupleaders. They know the ropesafter attending Camp sev-eral times and serve asstrong role models forthe younger kids. Thereare certain thingskids will sharewith other kidsand no twith theirparents.Once thekids havea c l ea rground-ing i nDivine Principle and the Bible, kids nat-urally embrace Hoon Duk Hae to seekdeeper content.

Singing is very, very important. Kidsreally respond to singing, whether it isHoly Songs, old Dan Fefferman or Oak-land songs, or Christian hymns. I wouldsay, there is never enough singing.

Il-Shim and the Purity Pledge

In the last two years, we have offeredan Il-Shim Ceremony or a purity pledgeas the final activity. This allows the kidsto make a strong commitment to a purelifestyle with a large community of peo-ple and their parents there to witnessthis act and support them. Again, theyounger kids look forward to the timewhen they can make this pledge as well.I believe this Unification style comingof age ceremony can provide a bridgefor our children into an adult life of faithand to other communities of faith.

Our children did not quit school, roararound the country on campaigns,fundraising, living with people from allover the world. Yankee Stadium, MSGand Washington Monument are no morereal to them than D-Day, Guadal Canalor The Battle of Gettysburg.

They live and function in two worlds.One is the world of school, their localneighborhoods and their relatives. Theseare comprised mostly of non-Unifica-tionists. The other world is the worldof their parent’s faith. They learn most-ly by what their parents to and whatthey see other adults do.

We need to help them integrate thesetwo worlds, to help them see the DivinePrinciple as a powerful tool for living aspiritual and productive life and to expe-rience God’s Heart and his love for them.They need to understand and make acommitment to these on their own. Mostof the 2nd Generation willnever meet True Father whilehe is here on earth with us.

Other Activities

It’s essential that kidshave lots of time for fun

and socialization. We pro-vide around 3 hours ofstructured activities suchas crafts, hiking and sportsas well as 2.0-2.5 hoursof free time a day. This freetime is important, as it

allows the kids to bondand f o r m t rue

friendships. Inthe evenings, we

have campfires,

with singing, prayer and other activi-ties. We have had square dances aswell, which the kids love, once they

give it a try. Fun and varied activ-ities are the key here. Crafts

may seem trivial to some, butwe have found that duringthis time kids often sharethe deepest aspects of theirlife and experiences withGod, their family or theworkshop. When theirhands are busy witha creative project,the sprit is free toexpress itself.

Evening camp-fires and times forpersonal prayerprovide the oppor-tunity for our kidsto connect direct-

ly to God. They do it much easier thanyou can imagine. I’ve seen lots of kidsin tears, feeling God’s Heart and hislove for them.

We’ve found structured activities last-ing around 3 hours on a rotating basisworks best. For example a group mightdo crafts for an hour, then play sportsand then swim. An hour or two afterthe activities, of free time allows kidsto socialize, swim again, and just havefun. It also allows the staff to catcha nap, visit or get ready for the nextactivity.

Recruit enough staff, so theadults can have fun as well.They don’t mind working hard,but they need inspiration, relax-ation and fun like anyone else. Takecare of the people who are taking careof the kids. We never have staff meet-ings later than 11pm. They are count-er-productive and you need people tobe well rested during the day.Finally, I’ve found it remark-able how far a sincere“thank you” will go in moti-vating others. Never, evertake anyone’s offering forgranted, no matter how small.A basic rule of etiquette isthat if you cannot thank peo-ple in person, you should do so in writ-ing afterward. This is good mannersand smart management. It is impor-tant that we recognize each other infront of God and others. When we setthe example of gratitude and servingothers as adults, our children will seethis as a normal part of life.

Making the Commitment

People often ask me, how can I makea commitment to something, when Rev.Moon, a leader or other providential

activities might get in the way? WhatI’ve learned is that if I make the com-mitment to provide this for the BlessedChildren, things work out. I was direct-ly ordered by an elder Korean leaderone year to postpone the Camp becauseit was on the same days at as a speak-ing tour by Mrs. Moon. He was worriedabout attendance and feeling lots ofpressure. I did not cancel the Campand did not make a big protest. Whenthe time came, we took the older kidsto the speech, had them act as ushersand they were able to attend a cele-bration with Mrs. Moon in her hotelroom afterward. For the kids, this wasthe highlight of the workshop. The Kore-an leader was supported and we heldour Camp. The lesson is God can doseveral things at once. Also rememberthat the Church leaders are people likeanyone else, they worry, suffer doubtbut still try to offer their time and tal-ent to God. Each of us can do the same.

Finally, I see the education of the2nd Generation as fundamentally aparental role. Especially until they areout of High School. Kids also learn bywhat they see their parents doing. If

their parents are involvedin the workshops as well,this speaks much moreloudly and clearly aboutthe real priorities in there

lives. Think about it.

Looking Ahead To 2001

We plan to organize two Camps,one primarily for members in East-ern PA and New Jersey and anoth-

er primarily for Washington, DCand Western PA. We also plan

to add a community servicecomponent for older kids inPhiladelphia. Our desire isto connect our kids to theexisting community andchurch contacts our Move-

ment has. If there are oth-ers who would like to use

these facilities, contact RobSayre. We are also thinkingabout how to transfer this expe-rience to other new families and

as a way of introducing others to themovement and the True Parents.

Traveling on long jour-neys is a time whenone can pray, study and reflectfreely. I am returning fromChung Pyung where some sis-

ters each shared their problems and wor-ries. On the spur of the moment I wasinadequate and unable to help them. Ileft with a heavy heart and cannot stopthinking of them, for somehow their con-cerns reflected the situations of a widecross-section of our community. And Iwant to

try now and put their difficulties intosome perspective. For if we can under-stand the purpose and reason for ourstruggles from an historical viewpoint,and understand their origin, then wecan more easily resolve them. Especial-ly we need to be able to put our own dif-ficulties into perspective and see thewhole picture, otherwise they overwhelmus. We need to remember clearly wherewe are headed, what our goals are, andto keep our vision. For that also gives usan energy and determination to endureand resolve our problems.

“A shining new historical era is infront of us. The time has come when allour cherished desires can be realized.”The time when the hopes, aspirationsand dreams of all mankind throughoutthe ages can be realized. The time whenGod’s suffering and pain can be endedas He “sees the realization of His deep-est longings come about. The founda-tion for the Kingdom of Heaven is final-ly being established of families that attendGod”—families that are sanctified, holyand separated from Satan and the satan-ic environment by the National LevelBlessing.

We were each of us “born for histo-ry,” and were chosen by God because ofthe merits of our ancestors and becauseof our potential to become “historicalheroes.” We were chosen to build thefoundation of a new history centering onGod. “To start a new history, we have tostand in front of history and endurewhere no one has ever endured before,and bring victories where victories havenever been won before.” “History up tillnow has been a history where Satan hasbetrayed God. The record of history thatGod can preserve starts with Father’sgeneration and those that inherit thehistory of traditions centering on TrueParents, and the world that they are try-ing to establish and preserve for thefuture. For the standard of life that Fatheris setting will become the standard of

universal history.”So we can understand that our goal

is formidable and that nothing less thanabsolute perfection is being asked of usby God and True Parents. It is what Jesusasked, “Be ye perfect, even as your Fatherwhich is in heaven.” It is daunting—togo where no one has gone before. Wehave to radically change our thinkingand begin to believe that it is possible,begin to believe in the seemingly impos-sible, and aim for the stars. However,True Parents are helping us; they havepaid great indemnity to open the way.True Father discovered the root causeof mankind’s woes and consequentlyresolved and restored all the complicat-ed, entangled failures of history througha course of great hardship and suffer-ing. All we have to do is follow the direc-tions. They have also helped to sanctifyus through the Grace Blessing, and Fatherhas given us the gift of blessed, liberat-ed ancestors who will help, support andprotect us. We are not alone. We alsohave the help of the saints and angels,and each other. But we have to overcomeSatan in ourselves, establish mind-bodyunity, and realize perfection on the indi-vidual level and on the family level.

Some members cannot understandwhy there are an increasing number ofproblems in individuals and families onthe grassroots level when Father is pro-claiming and establishing so many amaz-ing conditions, liberating more and moreof the spirit world with each proclama-tion, empowering the strength of the goodspirit world, and even God Himself.

Spiritually we under great pressureto bring victory, and all our shortcom-ings that hinder us from achieving thegoals are being exacerbated—heightenedand intensified—so that we cannot failto be aware of them, and hopefully willwork to resolve them.

Just because we have ancestors thatare blessed and access to greater helpfrom the spirit world than ever before,our situations won’t dramatically changefor the better and improve overnight. Wehave to lay the conditions that will mobi-lize their help. They don’t help auto-matically. They wait to be asked, becausewe are subject and they are object. Wehave to tell them specifically how to helpus. Also, they cannot come and help usif we have the wrong attitudes. We mustbe humble, and do our 100% best. Wecannot live self-centered, selfish lives.We must live for the sake of God and

humanity. And we must live our livesaccording to the guidance and directionsthat True Parents and Hoon Mo Nimhave given us. We cannot live impure,immoral lives. Also, we need to contin-ually repent for being inadequate, notbeing serious enough, and failing somany times to take the right attitude.We have to make conditions to help themhelp us. It takes great energy for the spir-it people to change the attitudes and cir-cumstances of physical people. So weneed to send them energy by prayer forat least three days, read Hoon Dok Hae,study Divine Principle, serve, sacrifice,give, witness and love people. Then wehave to direct the energy from whatev-er condition we made to help them ful-fill their tasks. But still at this time whenthe physical world is subject, the mostpowerful conditions are what we do our-selves—the love, words and service thatwe give to people. That is our most effec-tive instrument for bringing about change.We have to take responsibility and notleave it for anyone else to do. We haveto take the initiative, and then we willbe helped.

Father is educating the Blessed Wivesso that we can make our own founda-tion in relation to God. He is teachingus urgently how to become one with Himin our everyday lives, and so is Hoon MoNim. We need to begin the day by greet-ing God and offer our plans for the day.We pray when we leave home, then wereport what we are doing throughout theday and pray when we return home.Then at the end of the day we report ouraccomplishments and failures. We alsosanctify our environment and connectit to God by an attitude of prayerful rev-erence, gratitude and humility. TrueFather is teaching us how to becomeone with our spouses, through whole-hearted acceptance, service and devot-ed love. He is also helping us to under-stand how the most intimate relation-ships between husband and wife are holyand sacred. And he is teaching us howto build families that are united in uncon-ditional love for each other and are cen-tered on God, and how to live for thewhole purpose.

True Father is teaching us that to winvictory we have to have attitudes of thedeepest seriousness and the deepestdetermination. Jacob brought victorybecause he fought with all his energyand strength, not caring whether his hipbone was broken or not. To bring victo-ry we cannot center on our own under-standings and desires. We have to denyourselves, and our concepts. We have tobe able to deny all things and turn aroundin a completely new direction or we can-not “usher in the new world.” We can-not live centered on myself any longer.The motivation, direction, purpose andcontent of our lives has to be outwardcentered. We have to live for another, forthe sake of God, our spouse, family andmankind.

This whole new providence centeringon Chung Pyung with its emphasis onthe spirit world is a great problem forsome members, bringing doubts wheredoubts did not exist before. Because thelogic of the spirit world is so contradic-tory to the logic we have learned so far,especially with regard to science andmedicine, as time and matter do not existin the spirit world. Also, it is invisible,so it is difficult to verify; there are no

empirical scales that we can useto measure it by. However, if wecan keep an open mind, we willfind more and more evidence,

even scientific evidence, supporting theseemingly shocking things that Hoon MoNim says at times.

I would never have believed at onetime that spirits could block a womb andprevent a woman from becoming preg-nant. But a sister I know was marriedfor seven years before joining the churchand she could never conceive. She neverused contraceptives and they were bothfound to be fertile. Yet within seven yearsof being blessed, she became pregnantfour times. So I have no difficulty accept-ing that spirits can be in our bodies.

There is a great body of spiritual heal-ings and miracles already recorded thatdefy conventional science. There arephysical conditions considered incur-able by medicine, that had no mental orspiritual foundation, that were healedby prayer that calls on God’s love andenergy. Medical articles also acknowl-edge the power of the mind to facilitateeither healing or death. But science real-ly does not understand the nature of thecausal relationship that exists betweenthe spirit and physical. Because somepeople find these concepts new and dif-ficult to grasp, you don’t give up on allthat has been accomplished so far inyour life. You don’t throw out the babywith the bath water. We have to be patientand ask for signs and experiences to helpus believe and understand. Spirit worldwill help us if we ask and trust them todo so. What is most important is to haveour own personal experiences with Godand the spiritual world. Once we sub-stantially experience their love and pro-tection, sometimes in dramatic ways,our doubts and questions dissolve.

Father said that we “meet God whenwe overcome hardships through suffer-ing centered on God’s will and for God’swill.” We should not just endure suffer-ing and hardships but use it positivelyas a way of learning empathy for God’ssuffering.

Through it we can understand God’smiserable path and we can desire to com-fort and liberate God from all misery andpain.

“We have to long for God through ourtears, difficulties and suffering. Then nomatter how difficult our situation, if Godwalks with us it will be a happy place.”We also find God when we are “victorsover our self,” when we have no conceptof self and reach the zero point of com-plete humility. Last time I saw Fatherduring our 21 Day Blessed Wives Work-shop I was so moved when I saw howtotally humble True Father is. He hadno concept of self at all. And he radiat-ed such utter sweetness, kindness andgentleness when I sang for him.

Father also said that the fastest wayto find God is through witnessing, that“the place where you finally cross overto meet God is the place in Satan’s denwhere you are in agony centering on lovefor humanity.” Yet a sister told me howimpossible it is to witness once you startfamily life. She just accepted it as a mat-ter of course that an expanding, grow-ing church should stop growing in mem-bership once the young members areblessed. But that is not true at all. Sis-ters can witness even with a baby strappedto you, or in a stroller. Children canaccompany you no matter what theirage. Many times the brightness of your

children’s spirit attracts people and makesit easier to witness. All you have to do iskeep an evening free each week in yourhome, and you and your husband cantake turns teaching guests and takingcare of the children. I’ve done it and sohave lots of other couples. Also, thatkeeps a family outward looking and pro-tects you from the danger of centeringonly on your own family.

The simplest way for sisters to resolvethe struggle to love their husbands is tosincerely ask God to show you how Heloves your spouse, and believe that Godwill answer you. Absolutely you will expe-rience how God loves your spouse, andHe will show you your husband’s goodpoints, and show you how to win his love.It’s no good expecting him to change. Wehave to change ourselves, deny our ownfallen nature habits, likes, dislikes andexpectations. There are sisters who havehad serious problems or experiences thatscarred them. But really when we hon-estly tell God our problems and ask forhelp resolving them, He will always pro-vide the healing and help we need. Per-haps He will point you in the directionyou need to go to receive the necessaryunderstanding and support.

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek,and ye shall find; knock, and it shall beopened unto you.

For everyone that seeketh findeth; andto him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Or what man is there of you, whom ifhis son asks bread, will he give him astone?

If ye then being evil, know how to givegood gifts unto your children, how muchmore shall your Father which is in heav-en give good things to them that ask him?(Matt. 7)

Becoming one with your spouse is cru-cial. For it is not possible to become onetotally with God unless you can whole-heartedly love and become one with yourspouse in a loving, reverent, physicalrelationship of love. Father once said thatthat is the place where mind and bodybecome one. Sometimes when you touchhim/her, it will even feel as if you aretouching yourself. It is not easy for hus-band and wife to love each other some-times because we are restoring the lovethat was lost to God when Adam and Evefell, the love that enabled Satan to dom-inate the world. And it is through the

restored love of restored husband andwife that God regains dominion of theworld.

Sisters with young children expressedfears about their children losing faith intheir teenage years. The most importantpoint to protect your children’s faith isfor them to grow up with parents whoare united, and genuinely love each other,and sincerely love God and True Parents.

I would also like to share a few pointsthat might be helpful. From the time webear our babies, and in allour dealings with them, fromfeeding to cleaning, we shouldalways feel they representthe world and are God’s chil-dren, and never relate tothem in a purely personalway. We should always tryto keep a prayerful attitudecentered on God and TrueParents, treating them withrespect and reverence in ourhearts. Children become sen-sitive to that vibration, andonce they are used to it theyfeel happiest in it, for thespirit of prayer is expansiveand enabling, not narrow, limiting ordominating. I always tried to think likethat, and as my children grew older, if Iwould sometimes spontaneously hugthem and reach out to them in anunprayerful attitude, they would imme-diately rebuff me. But if I were reallyprayerful and thinking of God and theworld, they would be incredibly lovingand responsive.

Father also said that “when our chil-dren are lonely and miserable, we shouldteach them that we are miserable becauseGod is miserable. And we should com-fort them with prayerful hearts, saying,“Although you stand in a lonely, miser-able place now, your descendants willnot perish, and your future will not bebleak. This I will prove to you. Don’t feelresentment because we can’t feed andclothe you now.” Let them know thatsuch parents are holy parents.” Then asthey grow older, they won’t be envious ofthe comfortable existence and materialbenefits others have. For they will respecttheir parents and will value the internalcontent that their parents taught them.Another time Father said that “we shouldteach our family that he is our grandfa-ther and that “Because I received lovefrom grandfather, I am like your grand-father.” He said that we should teach

them that “True Father became as he isbecause he received love from God. Hereceives love from God and he is yourgrandfather. I received more love fromthis grandfather than anyone else and Iam one with the grandfather. That is whyI am the world’s best father. So I am thebest in the world when it comes to lov-ing you.”

Are you the best in loving your chil-dren? You must instill these kinds ofthoughts into them. This must be con-

tinued for centuries andmillennia; then ances-tors in the spirit worldand the descendants onthe earth will receiveblessings thousand andten thousand fold.”

One sister expressedher loneliness, that noleaders ever visited them.She was feeling a lack oflove. One solution is tosupport our leaders, andlove them, and pray forthem, and treat themrespectfully. Also, weneed to keep ourselves

busy, loving and serving others in ourenvironment. For when we are busy lov-ing and caring for others, witnessing andliving for the sake of the world, we don’thave time to think and worry about our-selves. Sometimes we are worried aboutwhat our neighbors would think, butwhen “we are crazy to love God and arecrazy to do God’s will, we never perish”or diminish, but will rather grow in stature,and become respected for our sincerityand dedication and goodness, and willbecome a source of inspiration in thecommunity.

St. Joan of Arc once gave a revelationto inspire members. She said that TrueParents want to give Blessed Couplesglory and uplift them, and that by mak-ing us Tribal Messiahs they were givingus a position in the spirit world that wouldbe second only to themselves. And shedescribed how future generations wouldpay homage to our lives, visiting placeswe frequented, and recalling how andwhere we overcame different problemsof faith, and how we developed our heartof love. She said that to be the messiah,head of a tribe and lineage, we have tobe worthy. Father also said that the “posi-tion to receive such benefit of glory canonly be obtained by going through a bar-rage of indescribable hardships.” Also,

she said that we should be grateful forconflicts and difficulties because theyhelp us to build strong spiritual musclesthat will enable us to stand straight infront of God. And that the time wouldcome when we won’t be able to experi-ence the hardships that enable us to growquickly. So we should welcome them andnot complain, as later we will regret lostopportunities.

That is why our leaders are exhortingus to fulfill the condition of bringing 180tribal members. True Parents want usto fulfill all the conditions necessary, sothat we qualify to receive all the bless-ings they want to give us.

“So Unification Church life means notfeeling resentful even when living a prisonlife and suffering. It means thinking thateverything is my fault and always attempt-ing to be loyal to heaven.” It means thatin everyday life when we encounter sit-uations that could make us angry, frus-trated or annoyed, we have to turn themaround and treat those experiences asindemnity conditions, offering them toGod with patience, tolerance, love andunderstanding. Every time we get affect-ed by our environment and react nega-tively, we show that we haven’t separat-ed from Satan, that we still carry fallennature, and in reality are still his child.

I am struggling myself to realize allthe above goals, and have a much longerway to go than most brothers and sis-ters. I stumble when I am tired or feel-ing down; sometimes I have even momen-tarily felt trapped. But sooner or later Iam always uplifted and resurrected inspite of myself. I think it is because Ialways try to honestly report my situa-tion to God, and ask for help to overcomeand to again have hope. Heung Jin Nimonce told us that as long as we have hope,even if our hope is just a flicker, thenspirit world can always help us.

This article was written on the planefrom Seoul to Paris while I was sittingwith a live bomb ticking away in a suit-case directly above my head. I reportedthe unclaimed case in Paris to the host-ess. When we were inside the terminalbuilding, police moved us so that theycould defuse a bomb found in a suitcase.And twenty minutes later there was anexplosion!

It seems like yesterday when wefirst formulated the national Sun-day School and Youth Ministrycurricula. The small committeeof youth and adults who helped

to write the curricula were intent ondeveloping a strong beginning for anactive and thriving ministry to chil-dren and teens. Since that time 6 yearsago, not only is the curricula beingused across the United States, but ithas been distributed throughout Europe,Russia, Japan, Korea, Oceania, andparts of Africa, Latin America, and theCaribbean. Through this program, wehave been able to create a more sta-ble ministry and faith development pro-gram for youth ages 5 through 18. Thatis truly exciting.

Just two years ago the Youth Min-istry curriculum was expanded andenhanced. Now our religious educa-

tion program for teens include not onlyspecial curricula for Junior High andHigh School-aged teens, but also thenew Il Shim program. Ini-tially developed by Rev.Hong and Brian Sabourinin New Jersey, the Il Shimprogram has been devel-oped into a strong rites ofpassage program containedin a useful ministry man-ual.

Since the beginning ofthe National Curricula,our movement has expand-ed and more of True Par-ents’ teachings are avail-able to our families. Thismeans that it is time to revise, update,and expand our Children’s MinistryCurriculum. I am beginning the revis-ing process which will also includemore emphasis on developing a strong

Children’s Ministry as well as new activ-ities and materials that the childrendo at home with their parents and

brothers and sisters.This is to help in thewriting of a home-basedfaith development/fam-ily education program(which is my next seriesof curriculum materi-als).

This is where all ofthe Sunday Schoolteachers can help. If youhave a particular les-son that you have usedand believe that it wouldbe valuable to include

in this expanded and updated Chil-dren’s Ministry curriculum, pleasemake a copy of the lesson, lesson plan,and any activity sheet that you havedeveloped and send it to me for inclu-

PART 2

After almost a week in Wash-ington D.C., Father announcedthat it was time to continuetheir journey. The group of fivepacked up their things and

prepared the car. They still had more thanhalf way to go, and, since winter wasalmost over, they were hoping it would bespring-like most of the way.

Mr. Sank Ik Choi, the first missionaryto Japan, had come to D.C. with DaikonOhnuki to see Father. They became thenew passengers on the trip West. Col. BoHi Pak and Moonhye Yoon (Seuk) rodealong as far as Cleveland—nine people inall.

The trip west meant going north forawhile to hit the rest of the East coast.They left a trail of holy grounds in Mary-land, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and NewJersey.

A Visit to a Medium

“Abogee,” said Col. Pak, before start-ing. “In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, therelives a famous trance medium namedArthur Ford. We can schedule a meetingwith him, if you’d like.”

“Yes, that would be good,” respondedFather. “But we must do it quickly. Thereis very little time.” Arrangements weremade.

In Philadelphia, they sat around a tablewith a few other people who had come.Arthur Ford had never met Father beforeand didn’t know he was special. He wentinto trance, and his spirit guide, Fletch-er, spoke. He said many things aboutFather.

For example, he said, “It was neces-sary that Mr. Moon should come to earth.God had to have some man through whomthe Spirit of Truth could speak....”

Toward the end of the reading, Fletch-er informed them, “I have to go now. Theenergy is waning.”

But Miss Kim quickly asked, “Have youanything to ask for Mr. Moon?”

Without hesitation, Fletcher answered,“I ask that those who have been blessedby knowing him ... hold up his hands,shelter him, and feed him with their love.Give him your whole support.... He is aninstrument through whom God is reveal-ing himself....”

When Arthur Ford returned to his body,

Father took the subject position.“When a spirit speaks to you from spir-

it world, it has a certain viewpoint,” hesaid. “It will lead you in one direction.When another spirit comes, it will leadyou in another direction. It is very impor-tant for you to learn the principle behindspirit world.... That way you will be ableto grow to a higher level yourself.... Youwere created to be Lord of Creation, soyou should be higher than the spirits.They should help you.... Also, you shouldfind out what level Fletcher is at, so youcan understand best how to work withhim.”

Arthur Ford was surprised by Father’sremarks. He was also interested. He askedquestions, and for about 45 minutes Fatherexplained many things about spirit worldand about God’s plans for restoring theworld.

At one point, Dr. Ford’s face lit up. “DoI understand you to say that those whoare now in the spiritual world are able toadvance only when they help people onearth to advance but that they don’t rein-carnate?”

“That’s right,” answered Father.Dr. Ford was obviously intrigued. “Is

that right? Is that right? he murmuredthoughtfully.”

“Well, who exactly are the angels? Justwhat is this Divine Principle you speakof? Should I work more on my own growth,or should I concentrate on helping oth-ers?” His questions kept coming, andFather’s answers inspired him.

There were several priests in the groupand Father gave them advice, as well. Itwas a day none of them would soon for-get.

The carload of nine was truly in highspirits as they left Philadelphia, and theyhad much to think about.

To New England

After New Jersey came the Big Apple—New York City. In Central Park, Fatherfound a small tree growing out of a hugeflat rock.

“Here,” he said. Among the toweringgrandeur and bustle of New York City, theentire holy ground was blessed on a rockmeasuring at least 20 feet across. The treegrowing out of it seemed to be splittingthe solid rock apart.

“This shows the strength of even a smallplant,” Father said to the group aroundhim. “You should be like this tree andbreak apart Satan’s kingdom. You may

feel small, but with the Divine Principleyou have the tool to be powerful.”

Although New York is very large andimportant, Father spent only one daythere. They stopped by the little apart-ment of Moonhye Yoon (Seuk), New York’sfirst member, for a bite to eat; then head-ed out of town..

North they went to the church spiresand peaceful villages of historic New Eng-land. The car whizzed through Connecti-cut, Rhode Island, the Public Gardens ofBoston, Massachusetts, and on to north-ern New Hampshire. In that single day,Father blessed ground in six states!

They reached Portsmouth, New Hamp-shire, around 10 o’clock at night. It wascold, and as a full moon shone upon thefrozen ground, Father performed the cer-emony.

Although it was night, their “day” wasnot yet finished, for they still had to hitMaine. There was not enough time to driveto the capital; therefore, while peacefullysleeping, the quiet village of Kittery receivedthe blessing for that northern state.

Cross Country into the Sunset

In Maine the car turned around andheaded west. Into the night, past the sleep-ing villages, over the hills and dales andrivers, and through the woods, they spedat breakneck speeds.

If someone had been watching, theywould have wondered who was chasingthis station wagon so loaded down withpeople and luggage.

Reaching Brattleboro, Vermont, at about3 in the morning, it was March 20. Ratherbleary-eyed and saddle-sore, they col-lapsed into their motel beds (or on theirfloor space). But as tired as they were,the sky had barely begun to lighten whenFather woke them up and urged them on.With haste, they found City Park andblessed its ground.

The next stop was Niagara Falls. It wasa long drive across New York, but theyreached it by late afternoon. The groundwas covered with snow there, and thespray from the roaring falls froze ontotheir clothes as they stood by the water’sedge. The sheer power of so much waterplunging nonstop over the cliffs madethem feel small, indeed; and once againthey marveled at the magnificence of God’shandiwork. Yet, Father had taught themthat creation is only a reflection of theirown image. One little person is much moreimportant than the greatest and mostawesome object of creation. They turnedto go feeling exhilarated—and very cold.

As they passed around Lake Erie toCleveland, any notion of spring was putto rest. It was snowing, and it quicklydeveloped into a blinding blizzard. Foronce, they had to slow down, as the driv-er squinted into the swirling whitenessand kept a tight grip on the wheel. Notmany cars were on the road now. Occa-sionally, snow plows whizzed by in pairs,looming out of the blizzard like friendlymonsters.

“Keep going,” said Father. “Whew! The angels sure must be guid-

ing us,” said the driver of the moment,“because I don’t know what’s keeping meon this road. I can’t even see it, and theway the wind is blowing, I feel like I’m get-ting hypnotized.”

While the drivers were under greatstrain to push on, Father looked seriousbut relaxed. His mind seemed to be focusedon another realm, and the storm was only

a minor inconvenience.The little clapboard center in Cleve-

land was truly a welcome haven preparedby Pauline Phillips (Verheyen) and KenPope. The steaming bowls of rice and meatserved at midnight quickly warmed theweary travelers and helped them forgetthe day’s ordeal.

“Is it our imagination or is winter unusu-ally long this year?” someone asked. It’sthe first day of spring, and we’re battlingsnow and zero degree weather all the time.Isn’t this the time to be looking for rainand thawing temperatures, and maybe arobin or two?”

“Yes, absolutely, responded another.“It’s usually warmer by this time.” Theyall agreed that Satan was probably work-ing overtime.

Saying good-bye to Col. Pak and MissYoon, they shot up to Detroit, Michigan,the land of the car factories. Then it wassouth and west again, past the factoriesand polluted skies leading into “The WindyCity,” Chicago, Illinois.

Eileen Welch (Lemmers) welcomed theminto her “Center” and served her best food,and then she cried because Father stayedonly one night.

They finally admitted that the snowwas not likely to leave them alone forawhile, so they purchased a set of chainsfor the tires.

“The instructions say not to go over 35miles per hour,” said George to Gordon.“It’s not safe to go faster.”

“Yeah,” answered Gordon. “And it’shard on the car.” They made very poortime.

“You can go faster,” Father said. Theysped up a bit.

“Faster,” Father kept saying. They spedup, but within 15 miles the chains broke.

“We better get a stronger set,” theyagreed. Although the chains made a ter-rible noise and the car bumped along,they went faster and faster.

“Good,” said Father.In Madison, Wisconsin, another stu-

dent of the correspondence course, Mar-jorie Hill, welcomed them into her home,and Father chose a little park nearby forholy ground.

Father smiled when they arrived in St.Paul, Minnesota.

“He likes the idea of staying in a citynamed after Paul of Jesus’ time,” explainedMrs. Choi. “He loves Paul and feels closeto him in many ways.”

The temperature was 4 degrees belowzero in that northern city settled by somany hardy Scandinavians. They bun-dled up the best they could, and as theyfollowed Father to the snowy hill, they lit-erally followed in his footsteps. The snowwas up to their knees in places! As always,Father’s energy was far ahead of theirs.As he paced off the 4-position foundation,he walked very fast. Long gone was theleisurely pace of California.

The next day, they drove on into thevast frozen North. In Fargo, North Dako-ta, there wasn’t as much snow on theground and the sun was shining, but thetemperature was 16 below zero—and thatwas at noon! They rubbed their handstogether vigorously and stamped their feetto keep warm—but not Father. He didn’teven wear his gloves. He concentratedfully on the ceremony and didn’t seem tonotice that his fingers had quickly becomered and stiff.

“Why can’t we be like that,” wondered

the others. But if they asked, he gave noanswer. To follow Father means learningon our own sometimes. “Study the Prin-ciple” or “That’s how serious I am,” hewould probably say.

In South Dakota, they had to climb upa hill on their hands and knees becauseof the ice and snow. The men helped Mrs.Choi and Miss Kim the best they could.

“Those two ladies are amazing,” remarkedone.

“Yes,” answered another. “They oftenhave to run to keep up with him. Theymust get tired, but they never complain.”

The next day, as they drove south toNebraska, yet another storm hit them,and they put on the trusty chains again.Carefully, yet speedily, they made theirway to Omaha and found a motel. As theyoften did, they all slept in one or two rooms,some on the beds and some on the floor.

When they awoke the next morning,the world was a dazzling wonderland ofwhite, and they had to sweep at least afoot of new snow off the car. They locat-ed a park with a small zoo, and a flock ofsheep watched silently as their True Shep-herd sanctified the earth around them.

The road to Wyoming was also icy, andonce again they prayed unceasingly thatthey wouldn’t skid off the road. Very fewcars were even attempting further travelthat day, and they passed abandoned carsall along the way. Yet they continued on.Neither snow, nor rain, nor sleet, nor hail....

Father blessed land in Lyons Park inCheyenne, Wyoming, with a toy railroadtrack running beside it.

A meal had been prepared in the Cen-ter, but Mrs. Choi informed them, “Fatheris anxious to travel on to Denver. He does-n’t want to take time to eat here. Perhapswe could take the food with us and eat itthere.”

They quickly packed it up and headedsouth. The smell of the food accompaniedthem and urged them on. Eventually, seat-ed with Galen and Patty Pumphrey in Den-ver, Colorado, the food was a banquet.And it was very late.

“We’ll leave early,” said Father, “rightafter we bless ground.” But the next morn-ing, right after they blessed ground in CityPark around a huge oak tree, the car sud-denly rebelled.

“No! No! I won’t go!” it seemed to scream.“I can’t go another inch on this burnt-outvalve.” By the time it could be repaired, itwas 3:30 in the afternoon. Precious timehad been lost.

“Should we wait until tomorrow toleave?” asked one driver as he lookedapprehensively at the overcast sky. In hisheart, he knew the answer before it wasgiven, and soon they were driving off intowhat was left of the cold gray day.

Father must have had a premonition,for suddenly he said something in Kore-an and Mrs. Choi translated, “Father sayswe should not go west over the RockyMountains as planned.”

“We could head north and spend thenight in Laramie, Wyoming,” suggestedone of the drivers. “From there, we candrive straight across Wyoming to Salt LakeCity.”

“That is good,” said Father. Both driv-ers heaved a sigh of relief, for they knewhow treacherous the mountains can bein winter and spring. The northern routewould be less mountainous.

But the next day, their sighs of reliefturned to sighs to relieve tension. Snowbegan to fall once again, and the windssoon followed. The snow was whippedaround them and over them until theycould hardly see. As they came up behindbig trucks, huge clouds of snow and ice

were flung onto their windshield. The vis-ibility was zero. Whenever they reachedthe side of the truck, they could see again,but each time it was a terrifying experi-ence.

“Don’t worry,” Father kept telling them.“Go faster.” At some points they went 80miles per hour, even though the roadswere covered with snow. Less-er people would have died ofheart attacks.

Well after dark, they arrivedat the home of a member inSalt Lake City. David Kim hadcome from Oregon, and thecozy home looked extra warmand inviting to the travelersafter such a harrowing day onthe road.

The next morning they tooka quick tour of the MormonTabernacle. It is a grand churchbuilt by the Mormons in thecity founded by the Mormons.

Father blessed ground ona bald mountain top nearby.The view of the city on one side and snow-covered mountains on the other provid-ed a stunning setting. As usual, they did-n’t take much time to enjoy its beauty.

“Kapsidah! (Let’s go!)” said Father.That evening, they were welcomed by

Vernon Pearson in Boise, Idaho. As therain softly fell, Father chose a spot in JuliaDavis Park to bless.

Then, “Kapshida!” And they were offagain.

The plan was to go north to Grangeville,Idaho, that night, and then on to Mis-soula, Montana, the next day. In the West,the cities are far apart. There are milesand miles of empty land. Even though hehad already seen much of America, Fatherstill shook his head in amazement. “Somuch space,” he said again and again.

After they were on the road awhile, itbecame evident that Mother Nature hadother plans for them, for the gentle rainturned to gentle snow.

“Snow!” they exclaimed in mock joy. They drove along the “scenic route.” It

wound around the hills and up and down,and the snow kept coming, heavier andheavier. Before long, they noticed carsstalled in huge drifts along the way. Eventhe plows weren’t keeping up with thedeepening snow. Finally, as they enteredCascade, Idaho, much to the relief of every-one, Father said, “Let’s stay here tonight.”They were only half way to Grangeville.

The next morning it was still snowing.Dare they venture onto the roads in suchweather? Normally, they would not.

“Master says we cannot wait,” Mrs. Choiinformed everyone. “The snow will prob-ably continue, and we must not get snow-bound.”

They pulled warily onto the snowy high-way and hoped their prayers and chainswould be strong enough. Mr. Choi, asalways, helped them relax with his jokesand cheerful manner, and they all triednot to think of the possibilities.

As they neared Grangeville, they woundalong White Bird Hill. “Turn to the left.Curve to the right. Careful now. On thisside a thousand foot drop. On that side a4-thousand foot drop! Whoops! The car issliding! Oh, no! The driver has lost con-trol! Heavenly Father, please protect us!”

There was nothing that could be done!Just then the car seemed to bump againstsomething soft. It gently came to a stopat the edge of the road. They looked outand saw nothing soft that could havestopped it, only a steep cliff. It seemedthat an invisible hand had reached outand brought their car to a stop just in

time. Their hearts remained stuck in theirthroats for much of that day. And Fatherlooked calm.

“The view was breathtaking,” said Gor-don much later in the safety of a warmcenter in California, “and so was the ride.”

It would have been so easy to turn leftand head for milder lands at that point.

But Montana needed to be blessed, andit was east. They had to make it to the“Land of the Big Sky.”

Luckily, after Grangeville, the stormquieted down. The roads became morefriendly, and everyone’s hearts settled backwhere they belonged. They could even lookaround a bit and enjoy some of the sce-nic pine-covered slopes looming above andthe icy rivers rushing below.

Once, when they stopped to changedrivers along the way, they all got out andtook a playful walk along the road, exer-cising their stiff legs and taking in deepgulps of the pure air.

As they resumed their journey andcame into Montana, “Oh, beautiful, forspacious skies” took on new meaning forthem. There is such a feeling of endlessspace and sweet air in Montana. In Mis-soula, holy ground was blessed amongthe Montana evergreen trees. Nearby, apure sparkling brook sang its song.

Then they turned back West and head-ed for Spokane, Washington—land ofwarmth and sun and dry highways. Theywere just beginning to relax, when Satanmade one last stand. The familiar curseof the journey hit—snow.

Entering the treacherous mountainpasses that had challenged countless pio-neers of the past, they marveled at howthose brave people were able to get throughat all. For them, there was only a roughtrail to follow, and thousands died alongthe way. Yet thousands got through andstarted new lives with their families.

George and Gordon picked their wayalong the treacherous roads, trying to keeptheir speed up as much as possible. Theyhad worn out three sets of chains andwere on the fourth set. By now, they hadbeen terrorized so many times by the icyroads that they seemed to be drained ofall fear. They were in God’s hands, andthey were almost as calm as Father. Nat-urally, they came through safe and sound.

West of Spokane, they finally discardedthe bumpy chains and sped smoothlyalong the highway, for they had enteredthe more temperate zone of the Westcoast. The car slowed down a little forthe Cascade Mountains, but then, throughthe night, they made up for so much losttime in the snow.

It was as if someone was fast-for-warding them to their final destination.The Washington police, just like the policein the other states, seemed to be busyor going the other way, and they werenot noticed. They entered Seattle at 4 inthe morning.

The drivers found their spot on the floorand fell immediately asleep. It wasn’t justthe long hours of driving that tired themso; it was the constant pressure of fulfill-ing Father’s condition to reach all thestates in 40 days and to keep him safe ineven the worst of conditions that drainedtheir energy.

They slept deeply, restor-ing quickly their energy forthe new day. Still, morningcame all too soon.

Down the West Coast

What a relief to shed thewinter coats and walk amongthe daffodils in the gentle rain.

After blessing ground in apark overlooking Lake Wash-ington, they drove on to St.Helen’s, Oregon, where JohnSchmidli had a big dinnerwaiting. They had one of thosewonderful meetings, with lotsof singing and shy laughter—Vernon Pearson, Galen

Brookes, and others. Father sang, too. The next day they drove south to Port-

land, Oregon, the land of the liquid sun(that’s what they call rain because it rainsso much there). In beautiful Mt. TaborPark overlooking Portland, the City ofRoses, Father chose a large tree, whichwas actually three trees in one, aroundwhich to bless ground.

When he was finished, he looked to thedarkening sky and said quietly with greatemotion, “Heavenly Father, it is fulfilled.”Mrs. Choi translated his words. It wasMarch 29. All 48 states on the mainlandhad received their holy grounds.

Technically, the condition was com-plete, but there was still one more stop tomake. As they drove toward California,they turned off the highway where MissKim had first begun her work six yearsearlier—Eugene, Oregon.

In good spirits, they drove through thecity, and Miss Kim showed them all thehouses where she had lived and worked.They drove out to the little community ofOak Hill where her first members had livedand to which she had moved. Father showedgreat interest in each place.

To reward this historic city, Fatherblessed one more holy ground, the 55thin America. This time, when it was com-pleted, Father raised his hands in a stronggesture of victory and shouted in English,“Finished!” He strode away like a victor.Everyone absorbed the same feeling andstrode victoriously after him.

After a well-deserved victory feast at aChinese restaurant, they headed on downthe highway to San Francisco, where thecircle would be complete. ❖

The IRFF has beenactive in Romaniaduring the last fiveyears and hasworked hard to

network and support in part-nership many of the effectivework done by NGO’s in thatcountry. Based on theseefforts, the IRFF could makea substantial contribution inorganizing a large gatheringfor social activists and lead-ers. This effort is an impor-tant step in building a greatertrust and cooperation amongthe various sectors of theRomanian society.

On December 2-3, 2000in Brasov, Romania two hun-dred and fifty activist fromdiverse backgrounds of lead-ership in Romanian societygathered. Members of Par-liament, leaders of NGO’s,student organization and reli-gious organization joinedtogether and used this oppor-tunity as a way to create avision of positive change forthe nation. A special eveningsession took place which high-

lighted the work of various non profitorganizations including the worldwideefforts of IRFF, reports from Assembly2000 were shared as was the speechof the UN Secretary General, Kofi Anan.The immediate result for IRFF was thatmany of the organizations representedasked that we establish cooperation onupcoming projects.

Based on the relationships formedfrom the meeting the IRFF choose toimmediate work with the very activeLeague of Women from the coastal cityof Constanta, on a “Christmas Cara-van”. This project is designed to bringjoy during the Christmas season andits was done with the cooperation ofthe League of Women, the Tatar Com-munity and the Greaque Communityfrom Constanta.

The Christmas Caravan visited fivevillages and offered Christmas gifts for600 children from poor families. IRFFwas able to contribute 10% of the fundsfor the gifts. The caravan was a sen-sation and news of it attracted local TVand newspaper coverage. The follow-ing is excerpts from an article in oneof the newspapers.

“Santa Claus Caravan” The idea ofa “Santa Claus Caravan” came in themiddle of November and was embraced

by Women League , The Association ofBusiness Women “Pontus Euxin”, WomenOrganization of Tatars and GreaqueCommunity. Local businesses wereasked to help support this new projectbut meet with refusals or were theypolitely ignored us. Because of this, wewant to thank those that made it pos-sible to have gifts and make happy 600children from schools and kindergartensfrom the towns of Cochirieni, Rasova,Aliman, Independenta and FantanaMare. We give our thanks to IRFF Roma-nia whose help in this pioneer projectwas invaluable. Despite the shortnessof the time for preparation we were ableto succeed to bring joy to so many fam-ilies. We hope that with more planningnext year, we will expand this programand establish a new tradition in theregion. Maria Frangeti, President ofLeague of Women Constanta.

Upcoming Plans for IRFF in Roma-nia: We are planning to have in Brasova program for poor children during Feb-ruary and March. During the Summerwe will have a second project in Con-stanta repairing a local orphanage. Thisproject will involve the League of Women,the wife of mayor and the director ofthe region’s hospitals. ❖

In his very thoughtful Dreams:God’s Forgotten Language, Cali-fornia’s Father John Sanford, anEpiscopalian priest and Jungiancounselor, tells of a remarkable

dream his worried father had after aseries of illnesses and at an age whenhe knew death could not be far off. Hereported it to his wife, who later record-ed it. In the dream the father goesthrough different scenes from his lifeand

“Finally he sees himself lying on acouch back in the living room. I (Mrs.Sanford) am descending the stairs andthe doctor is in the room. The doctorsays “Oh he’s gone.” Then, as the oth-ers fade in the dream, he sees the clockon the mantelpiece; the hands havebeen moving, but now they stop; asthey stop, a window opens behind themantelpiece clock and a bright lightshines through. The opening widensinto a door and the light becomes abrilliant path. He (Mr. Sanford) walksout on the path of light and disap-pears.”

To the author, the son of the dream-er, the meaning of the dream is clear.It is saying that having passed throughthe many phases of his life, time hasnow run out for the elder Sanford (thehands on the clock have stopped). How-ever, this event is not the end, but thebeginning of something else. On theother side of earthly time, a new dimen-sion of life is opening up. The dreamreassures Sanford’s father that he willproceed into another world, one beyondspace and time.

The idea that human beings survivephysical death has been expressed inso many places that it is foolhardy toignore it. In a number of Plato’s dia-

logues, for example The Republic andPhaedo, we encounter this masterthinker’s idea that after death the soulcontinues to exist in another realm.Dante, the greatest poet in Italian his-tory, devoted his three part epic, TheDivine Comedy, to describing his trav-els through the spiritual realms of Hell,Purgatory and Paradise. While we don’tknow how firm Shakespeare’s convic-tions were, we do find him depictingHamlet conversing with the revenge-ful spirit of his murdered father. Andin the writings of Emmanuel Sweden-borg, an eighteenth century Swedishscientist and mystic, we find volumi-nous records and thoughtful analysisof his experiences with the spirit worldand its residents.

Nor should we overlook the Bible.Both Isaiah (26:19) and Daniel (12:2)write of their expectation of life afterdeath, while both Jesus (Lk 9:30-31)and Paul (Acts 26:13-26) are reportedas encountering non-physical beings.Indeed, in 1 Corinthians Paul goes tosome length to describe the charac-teristics of the “spiritual body” in whichthe Apostle asserts that believers willbe resurrected. (1 Cor. 15:35-50).

What is it like?

As was explained in the Principle ofCreation, Divine Principle unequivo-cally affirms the continuation of lifeafter physical death. Since God is eter-nal, He created His counterpart—Hischildren—to exist eternally also.

The question is what will be ourexperience on the “other side”. Althoughwithin the Roman Catholic traditionthe dichotomy between heaven andhell is muted by the concept of pur-gatory, the historic position of the Chris-

tian faith is that the alternatives fac-ing one upon his death are only thesetwo: heaven or hell.

If one has followed God and accept-ed His son, eternal salvation in theKingdom of Heaven is promised. If onthe other hand one has strayed fromthe path, the torments of hell will behis. In ages past the horrors depictedin such pronouncements as a famoussermon preached by Colonial Ameri-ca’s Jonathan Edwards’, Sinners in theHands of an Angry God, have been suf-ficient to cow even the most intrepidinto trembling obedience to the Law.The eternal terrors of the regions below,we have been told, are hardly to betaken lightly.

For Divine Principle, such expecta-tions are the product of an incompletereligious awareness. The spirit worldis not simply limited to heaven and hellbut is differentiated according to manylevels. One’s position after death deter-mined by his spiritual attainment dur-ing life. In contrast to traditional notionsof heaven as a reward and hell as animposed punishment, one’s positionin the after-life is a natural result ofthe quality of one’s life on earth.

The Principle would firmly agreewith Oxford University’s John Mac-quarrie, who, in writing on the subjectof heaven, argues sensibly for an organ-ic connection between the stages ofone’s life before and after death:

“Heaven is not a reward that getsadded on to the life of faith, hope andlove, but it is simply the end of thatlife, that is to say, the working out ofthe life that is oriented by these prin-ciples. Understood in this way...thesymbol (heaven) stands for fullness ofbeing.”

Religious Evolution

Just as the religious evolution ofhumanity may be thought of as pro-ceeding through three stages, so maythe spiritual growth of any person.Accordingly, Divine Principle assertsspirit persons at the different levelsmay be distinguished.

A person who has grown throughthe formation stage of resurrection maybe said to have become a form spirit.After his physical death, he would liveat the form spirit level of the spiritworld. Similarly, we may use the termsof life spirit and divine spirit to describethose persons who have grown throughthe growth and completion stages,respectively, on earth. At the growthstage in the spirit world one enters theregion called Paradise, while at thecompletion stage he enters the King-dom of Heaven.

Traditionally, those of the Christ-ian faith have understood Heaven andParadise to be the same. Divine Prin-ciple, however points to a distinction.The Kingdom of Heaven emerges asthe dwelling place for those who havefulfilled the purpose of God’s creation.

Although Jesus came as the Mes-siah to fulfill this ideal and foster thesalvation of humanity, he was pre-vented by the crucifixion from doingso. Therefore, since the three bless-ings and the Kingdom were not real-ized on earth, we may understand thatthe Kingdom of Heaven in the spiritworld remains vacant. Jesus and hisfollowers remain in Paradise, the regionin the spirit world equivalent to thegrowth stage of resurrection. Their ownresurrection to the Kingdom of Heav-en is to take place through the min-istry of the Second Advent.❖

In this article we’ll tackle a subject thateveryone has an opinion about: money.More precisely, money and its rela-tionship to the spiritual life.

Religious people, from ancient Hindumystics through modern Christians, havealways been leery of material possessions,and especially their concentrated form,money. (Read I Tim. 6:10). Some have goneso far as to renounce it completely, embrac-ing an austere monastic life.

Unificationists, with a vast, worldwidevision, tend to regard money as a tool. Fuelto power an ever-expanding Providence ofGod. And there is never enough!

Finances

Finances are an issue for everyone. Peo-ple have strange attitudes about money,always wanting more for themselves, yetresenting the wealthy. Dreaming about howthey’d spend every dollar they might obtain,yet unsurprised when some lottery winneror rich celebrity self-destructs.

Few are actually happy with their finances.Third World people need money for sheersurvival. Billionaires are constantly bat-tling rivals, shysters, and the tax man.

Money is one of the primary causes ofdivorce. One partner might be irresponsi-ble, or some third person appears to offerfinancial security. Even within stable cou-ples, financial styles may differ. Unifica-tionist couples often overlay cultural dif-ferences on these individual ones.

Gender plays a big role in finances, asmoney represents different things to menand women.

In general, men find esteem, and expresstheir love, through their careers, by pro-

viding a home for their family. If they’re notdoing well, men experience immense stress.Push themselves so hard they becomestrangers to their own children. (This hap-pens more in Japan than in America.)

For women, money is more personal. It’soften used to show love, by buying gifts;and to express faith, through making spe-cific donations.

Too often, wives leave their financesentirely to the man of the family. Millionsof widows are thus left vulnerable to mis-management, or even to con artists.

Many Unificationist couples place greatemphasis on their children. It may be sports,or the arts, or practical skills. Some insiston a maximum of formal education andtutoring.

Other couples place top priority on tithes,church projects, and campaigns. Time andmoney are heavily shifted toward these.Vague assurances of “God will bless” arespoken, and while miracles sometimes occur,more often, debts accumulate.

There are ways to smooth out these dif-ferences, and create a happy and securehousehold. It takes faith, understanding,and effort.

Tithing

How best to handle our finances? The Bible, with its system of tithing, says

that God has dominion over the materialworld, including financial matters. Believ-ers have interpreted this in various ways.

Millions of believers, chronically lackingmoney, decide they’ll just be happy to have‘treasures in Heaven.’ Some clergymen havegone to the opposite extreme, promisingfabulous Heaven-sent riches to anyone whodonates to their ministry.

In the early days, Unificationists livedin missionary centers, and money was heldin common. Now, most are married, andhave places (and bank accounts) of theirown.

We know that God will bless us throughtithing, yet a newly Blessed couple has todo an awful lot by dividing up a rather smallpie.

In every church, it is the Pastor’s job toinspire tithing. Funds are needed for numer-ous worthy purposes. He encourages parish-ioners to begin tithing, or to increase theamount. Not demanding too much, andrisking alienation. A challenging task.

For our members, all this creates pres-sure to make more money. Add that to ourworldly inexperience, and we can get intodifficulties.

Members who chose to ‘go the secularroute’ usually have white collar skills, andlucrative careers. Unfortunately, those pastsecular choices sometimes translate into acurrent unwillingness to part with theirmoney . . .

This holds true in a wider sense. It’s usu-ally easier to go door-to-door fundraisingin humble neighborhoods than in wealthyones.

Meanwhile, members who stuck withthe ‘formula course’ are now eager to offerfunds they simply do not have! This hasled to a few breakthroughs—and an awfullot of mistakes.

Some took the easy option: borrowingmoney. Perhaps from relatives (causinguncomfortable situations), but more often,from banks and credit cards. The result isfamiliar enough that I need not describethe painful details.

In my opinion, if someone tithed withborrowed money, it wasn’t really their moneyat all. Especially if they knew they had noreasonable chance of paying it back. Sure,they didn’t get it from the bank at gun point,but just because the penalties are milder,that doesn’t make it right.

Marketing

Unificationists are now familiar with agreat many “get rich quick” offers. Various

new products, multi-level-marketing setups,and other business plans have, in essence,gained their own converts—who then attemptto recruit everyone they know.

Our members have lost a lot of money,and not one of those plans has enjoyedwidespread success. Why? Members alwaystried to sign each other up, and also, thosebusiness offers were unsound in the firstplace. In one case, a sudden bankruptcy(by an ‘outside’ Chinese supplement com-pany) left hundreds of members in the lurch.

Your author used to live in Las Vegas,and heard pitches for just about every moneymaking scheme imaginable. I tried a cou-ple of businesses, and made a decent prof-it. Then I got sick of approaching everyonewith a ‘hustler’s eye,’ and decided I’d rathersell things I’ve created personally (like sto-ries).

Some members have remained in sales,but now it’s with regular street-cornerstands, or for legitimate corporations. A fewhave developed their scientific, political, orartistic skills. Others have ‘blue collar’ jobs,many of which pay quite well. One broth-er sold his registered Internet domain namefor $20,000! (Anybody want mine?)

As once suggested here in the UNews,instead of pushing that latest (alleged) hotdeal on everybody, how about marketingthe True Parents instead?

Many members have gone to work for‘outside’ companies. This presents somechallenges. A Unificationist boss will under-stand the large tithes to be made, and thelatest mobilization, whether domestic oroverseas. He may be rushing off on the nextflight, himself!

It’s a little harder to explain such thingsto a secular boss. Each campaign is very,very important, but members will still needtheir job the day after it ends.

There are stories of the noble sacrificesmade by our early members in Korea. Themodern Providence was given a crucial

boost, and Korea itself savedfrom Communist domination.

However, in the process,those member’s own childrenweren’t adequately cared for.An alarmingly large numberof those Korean youngsters,now grown, have rejected Uni-ficationism. (One wonders ifthere might have been moreoptions.)

Conclusion

In the future, scientificadvances like nanotechnolo-gy will provide such greatmaterial abundance thatmoney itself will be obsolete.The Principle can stave off thedecadence that such wealthwould otherwise entail, andthen we’ll have a real King-dom of Heaven on Earth.

Meanwhile, responsibleChristians such as StephenCovey and Larry Burkett havewritten excellent financialguide books, combining spir-itual understanding with com-mon sense and monetary skills.Study them!

Jesus’ famous Parable ofthe Talents makes it clear thatbelievers need not shun money,but rather, should handle itresponsibly. Then, over time,it will surely grow. In Princi-pled terms, we must be sub-ject over money. ❖

Communication can havenumerous functions depend-ing on our individual needsand aspirations. My moti-vation for studying com-

munication lies in the notion that com-munication is the basis for any kind ofsuccess. I believe that if you can learnhow to become an efficient, affective,and persistent communicator thenmany doors will be opened for variousopportunities.

Understanding and practicing com-munication enables us to accomplishour intentions and goals. In today’sworld, individuals are constantly try-ing to improve their means of commu-nication in order to be better businesspeople, more respectable political fig-ures, more suitable teachers, more lov-ing parents, husbands, wives, andfriends. As we can see, communicationplays an important role in just aboutevery aspect of our lives.

At work we are constantly trying tofind new ways to reach out to the pub-lic in order to endorse a product or anorganization. We are continually beingchallenged to find the most effectiveway to gain the liking and trust of thecustomer. In the business and politi-cal world there are multiple ways ofapproaching a situation. Producers can

endorse their product through ethos(personal character), pathos (emotions),or through logos (logic). Knowing youraudience and discovering which methodwill best sway them to your side is allpart of communication. It is also imper-ative to be able to distinguish betweensocially acceptable and socially unac-ceptable means for adver-tising a product or forconveying a political view-point. There are manymoral, ethical, and racialissues that we must beaware of in order to suc-cessfully convey our mes-sage.

At the family level, wemust learn to establishhealthy relationshipswith our parents, husbands or wives,and siblings. In today’s society the like-lihood for a marriage to end in divorcehas reached astonishing rates. If com-munication is the heart of any mean-ingful relationship, we can concludethat the average family needs to improveon fundamental communication skills.I believe that families build the frame-work for our society. Thus, I believethat every individual should establishan understanding for communicationprinciples to better their family rela-tions and subsequently to contributeto a more harmonious society.

Finally, every individual communi-cates in a unique way on a personallevel. We interact with our conscienceand our moral values in order to make

daily decisions for our own lives. Whatwe wear, what we eat, what we say, andhow we respond to others, all expressand communicate to society who weare and what we represent.

Aristotle’s model for communicationis known as the canons of rhetoric. Thecanons separated communication into

five categories: inven-tion, style, arrange-ment, memory, anddelivery. Today, theyremain as the outlinefor many public speak-ing classes and com-munication disciplines.Motivation for study-ing communicationtoday slightly differsfrom that in previous

times. In the past, canons were solelyused to aid in expressing thoughts forpolitical and legal reasons. As we enteredthe medieval period, forms of commu-nication expanded to letter writing andpreaching. Finally during the modernperiod, communication was approachedas an art, through presentations, throughthought, and by acknowledging thereceiver as a vital part in communica-tion. As we arrived in the twentieth cen-tury, the scientific method became moreprevalent. Scholars started to examineand explore the demeanor and reac-tions from the listeners to further helpdetermine which techniques work best.

Communication has surpassed manymilestones and advanced to a moreprofound understanding in our time.

The goals and objectives of communi-cation have remained the same despitenew awareness and insights. On theone hand, as technology advances, ourmeans of communication have improveddramatically, thus allowing us to com-municate efficiently on an external level.That is to say, we exchange increasingamounts of fact based information thatis processed as data. On the other hand,there seems to be sufficient evidencethat there emerges an increasing needfor improving communication on aninternal level when we seek to buildmeaningful human relationships. Inparticular, communication betweenmarriage partners and family membersinvolves the spiritual dimension of ourbeing where we attempt to share feel-ings and personal needs with our lovedones. Improving our communicationskills for developing interpersonal rela-tionships then becomes a necessarystep for healing the present disillu-sionment in marriage and family life.

The development of the spiritualdimension of communication thenbecomes an indispensable agenda forour information and data driven soci-ety. External technological advancesin communication need to be balancedby improved personal skills that enableus to share our inner life of feelingsand values. It is such a balance in ourpractice of communication that willserve as the foundation for our per-sonal success and for building a healthysociety. ❖
