On Sunday my initial shock
quickly moved to grief I found
myself mourning the immediate
loss of hopes and dreams and
felt the weight of the indefinite
delay of finding a new church
home In order to go as far as
many of us in the congregation
did we had to be willing to risk to
envision what may have bloomed
next and to go so far in our
longing and imagining that we
could almost taste it Now we
need to let go of any immediate
large change and consider what
adjustments we can make in our
current building so we can
c o n t i n u e t o w e l c o m e
newcomers create a hospitable
environment for parents with
young children and look beyond
our building at ways to connect
in the community and with one
another
By the time I boarded the plane
to Spokane Irsquod written an email
to twenty of my ministerial
colleagues and the Regional
staff to inform them of the
outcome of the vote They all
carried the excitement and
possibility of what moving to a
larger church would have meant
for our congregation and the
growth Unitarian Universalism in
areas north of the Twin Cities

Awareness is not the
same as indulging in the
intensity of grief nor is
allowing yourself to come
into full contact with your
thoughts and feelings
after loss the same as
wallowing in pain or
keeping yourself in pain
Awareness is allowing
yourself to accept the pain
of grief thereby finding
relief in not running away
from your loss Grieving
mindfully is the process of
using your emotional
vulnerability not to suffer
great distress or to
intensify your pain but to
redirect this pain toward
your growth as a human
being Engaging in this
process begins when you
come in full contact with
yourself and learn to ride
the waves of griefhellip
Grieving mindfully can be
understood as making the
decision to allow yourself
to mourn and to fully
experience the lessons for
grief with the goal of living
life better

Following the vote count
regarding the Robbinsdale
property on Sunday I boarded a
plane to Spokane WA for
Ministry Days and the Unitarian
Universa l is t Associat ionrsquos
General Assembly (GA) I tucked
the book ldquoGrieving Mindfullyrdquo
into my suitcase and felt grateful
for the opportunity to get away
for a bit and sort out my feelings
The excerpt accompanying this
article captures my approach to
accepting and moving through
the grief that I and many of you
are feeling at this moment
ldquoWhen you come in full contact
with yourself and learn to ride
the waves of griefhellipGrieving
mindfully can be understood as
making the decision to allow
yourself to mourn and to fully
experience the lessons for grief
with the goal of living life betterrdquo
The words that Lynne Schuman
Board President shared at the
closing of the vote count which
were echoed in our enews and
Facebook post suggest that we
all take a break a breather to
let the result of the vote settle in
We promised that we would
return in early July and reengage
with the question of whatrsquos next

Moving Forward Mindfully

Presidentrsquos Letter by Lynne Schuman
For me the key phrase in this prayer for this moment at MSUS is ldquothat I may not so
much seek to be understood as to understandrdquo I donrsquot yet understand the outcome of
our vote last Sunday where as a community we decided not to move forward with the
possible purchase of the church building in Robbinsdale
Irsquove been thinking about it a great deal as I know many of us have But having a
conversation in my head (which I am prone to do) does not tell me what is in the heads
and hearts of those who disagreed with moving ahead on the Toledo Avenue church
possibility Nor does it help me understand those who agreed that the Board should
continue to pursue it but who may have had very different reasons than I did
Only conversations will do that conversations where all members of MSUS will listen
with respectful and open hearts to ideas they may not agree with Thatrsquos not easy but
thatrsquos where we need to go That is the only way that I know of to come to a decision
that will move this church forward into a healthy future 77 of those voting on the
Toledo Avenue church option thought that particular building was a chance worth
pursuing 23 did not Id like to understand
We also need to remember that we can choose to prioritize our relationships over any
particular issue or decision
Your Board of Trustees will be meeting on Wednesday July 10 to discuss next steps in
finding or creating a physical space that will allow us to pursue our vision and mission
to meet the needs of our current community and to continue to invite new members
into Unitarian Universalism
Part of that discussion will be on promoting healthy conversations creating safe spaces
for each member to engage in deep conversations about hopes fears and dreams for
this church community moving forward If you have thoughts about that process and
what would make it most fruitful please contact me Reverend Laura or any member of
the Board
Thank you for your willingness to listen to talk and to engage for the health of this
beloved community
Warm regards
Lynne
hellip grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand
to be loved as to lovehellip

Even though it feels like wersquore solidly into summer mode at this point my thoughts are
already leaning toward Fall Registration for Religious Education classes for children and
youth for the 2019-20 church year is available online here httpsformsgle
Ne3WBEogHNJ7yEKeA Please take a moment to register your family so that we can be
ready to welcome you when our regular schedule resumes Sunday September 15th Efforts
to build the teaching teams for the various rooms have also begun so if yoursquore interested in
helping out in the classroom please let me know on a Sunday morning or drop me a note at
dremsuuorg
As our children and youth are moving through the program the necessity to shift the
divisions in the classrooms occasionally occurs This year is one of those times as wersquoll move
to an elementary room with preschool ndash 3rd graders a middle group composed of 4th - 6th
graders and a final group of 7th ndash 12th graders I am currently in conversation with the
families of our 4th amp 5th graders to sort out the details of running the Elementary level of
Our Whole Lives (OWL) for them in the next year so it appears wersquoll be heading into another
full busy year very soon

They are lovingly accompanying me in my grief and more importantly they continue to hold
onto hope as well I pray that those of you who are also feeling disappointed and deeply
saddened have people to hold your feelings and nourish hope as well If not I or any of the
Board members are willing to be there to listen to you if you want to process the past few
months resulting in the decision to not move forward with the Robbinsdale building We can
care for one another and invite a loving conversation among all of us (those who voted for
and against the move) as we ride the waves of grief which are sure to follow
We now enter a new luminal space one we are more familiar with We return to the
narrative of ldquowe are searching for a new church homerdquo not knowing if something we can
afford will surface in a month in a year or take much longer We have learned and will
continue to learn from this experience and hopefully we will have an opportunity to put our
learnings to the test again For now we will continue to worship on Sundays support one
another through life events and illnesses serve the community and intentionally celebrate
an actively examined faith while challenging one another with loving kindness to be our best
selves and work for a flourishing world

a brutal attack in Central Park Based on the true story Several years ago we watched
Ava DuVernayrsquos film 13th together Join us this summer as we watch and discuss a

Wersquore looking for a new leader for our annual pledge drive In the following Katie Johnson
our previous Pledge Drive Chair describes what she has done the past 3 years though
each leader should feel free to adapt the details to match their own ideas and schedule
First note that I came into this with no specific experience in this but with a
commitment to the financial well-being of MSUS I followed some things from the
past did some reading on the topic and went from there Working on the pledge
drive has opened my heart to greater generosity in all forms
It is ideal to do some big picture planning in the fall especially if yoursquod like to include
pledge kick-off or wrap-up events that need to get fit into the schedule among other
church events or if we want to incorporate any sort of pledge related small group
meetings The fall is also a good time to consider what might work for the pledge
drive theme
I did almost all of the pledge drive preparation work from January to mid-March which
is when wersquove started the pledge drive in recent years Once the pledge drive was in
swing I kept up some sort of pledge tracking mechanism had conversations with a
few members who didnrsquot pledge by the deadline and generated thank you notes All
pledge drive tasks should be able to be completed by June except that you may wish
to publish final pledge drive results in a newsletter that comes out after June
Tasks include defining the schedule for the pledge drive and any associated pledge
events planning any pledge related events creating written materials to go into
pledge packets for members preparing newsletter articles Sunday announcements
and email blast notices to promote andor provide updates on the pledge drive
coordinating pledge testimonials or other special elements for Sunday services
during pledge time and generating thank you notes as the pledge drive wraps up
Certainly anyone who leads the pledge drive should have some organizational skills
and some creative ideas but you donrsquot have to do everything Irsquove had at least one
person helping to create the content andor graphics for the written materials Beth
in the office can help with mail merges to generate personalized material and with
printing the materials Once the various components of the pledge drive are
determined then individuals can be found to help with specific events or tasks
Ideally yoursquoll be reasonably comfortable talking to people about the financial
stewardship of MSUS I found it surprisingly enjoyable to present a pledge kickoff
announcement each year and every member that I spoke to personally about
pledging was willing to engage in conversation I chose to play a big role in the pledge
kick-off service this year ending up writing enough to give the sermon but that is not
an expectation of this position
I am happy to chat with anyone who might be interested and to provide whatever
past materials might be most helpful

Wersquore looking for a new leader for our annual pledge drive In the following Katie Johnson
our previous Pledge Drive Chair describes what she has done the past 3 years though

during pledge time and generating thank you notes as the pledge drive wraps up
Certainly anyone who leads the pledge drive should have some organizational skills
and some creative ideas but you donrsquot have to do everything Irsquove had at least one
person helping to create the content andor graphics for the written materials Beth
in the office can help with mail merges to generate personalized material and with
printing the materials Once the various components of the pledge drive are
determined then individuals can be found to help with specific events or tasks
Ideally yoursquoll be reasonably comfortable talking to people about the financial
stewardship of MSUS I found it surprisingly enjoyable to present a pledge kickoff
announcement each year and every member that I spoke to personally about
pledging was willing to engage in conversation I chose to play a big role in the pledge
kick-off service this year ending up writing enough to give the sermon but that is not
an expectation of this position
I am happy to chat with anyone who might be interested and to provide whatever
past materials might be most helpful

We now enter a new luminal space one we are more familiar with We return to the
narrative of ldquowe are searching for a new church homerdquo not knowing if something we can
afford will surface in a month in a year or take much longer We have learned and will
continue to learn from this experience and hopefully we will have an opportunity to put our
learnings to the test again For now we will continue to worship on Sundays support one
another through life events and illnesses serve the community and intentionally celebrate
an actively examined faith while challenging one another with loving kindness to be our best
selves and work for a flourishing world
When They See Us
Five teens from Harlem become trapped in a nightmare when theyre falsely accused of
a brutal attack in Central Park Based on the true story Several years ago we watched
Ava DuVernayrsquos film 13th together Join us this summer as we watch and discuss a
four part series that is a powerful retelling of a case that gripped the nation This is a
difficult series to watch so our time together will be supportive reflective and reverent
All films will be held in the social hall come to one or all
Part One
Tuesday July 16 630-830 pm
In the spring of 1989 five boys of color are arrested interrogated and coerced into

Tuesday July 23 630-830 pm
As the jogger case stirs tensions nationwide the families of the boys and their lawyers
prepare for a bitter legal fight against the city of New York (71 minutes)

Ideally yoursquoll be reasonably comfortable talking to people about the financial
stewardship of MSUS I found it surprisingly enjoyable to present a pledge kickoff
announcement each year and every member that I spoke to personally about
pledging was willing to engage in conversation I chose to play a big role in the pledge
kick-off service this year ending up writing enough to give the sermon but that is not
an expectation of this position

and email blast notices to promote andor provide updates on the pledge drive
coordinating pledge testimonials or other special elements for Sunday services
during pledge time and generating thank you notes as the pledge drive wraps up
Certainly anyone who leads the pledge drive should have some organizational skills
and some creative ideas but you donrsquot have to do everything Irsquove had at least one
person helping to create the content andor graphics for the written materials Beth
in the office can help with mail merges to generate personalized material and with
printing the materials Once the various components of the pledge drive are
determined then individuals can be found to help with specific events or tasks
Ideally yoursquoll be reasonably comfortable talking to people about the financial
stewardship of MSUS I found it surprisingly enjoyable to present a pledge kickoff
announcement each year and every member that I spoke to personally about
pledging was willing to engage in conversation I chose to play a big role in the pledge
kick-off service this year ending up writing enough to give the sermon but that is not
an expectation of this position
I am happy to chat with anyone who might be interested and to provide whatever
past materials might be most helpful

We will hold our Merging of the Waters service
on Sunday September 8th at 1000 am This is
a wide-spread UU service where congregants
bring water from somewhere that matters to
them This could include any place such as a
lake you love a river in a place you travel to a
puddle in a summer downpour the kitchen
sink or the back yard hose Bring your water in
a small container and we will merge them as a
symbol of the connection to water and to each
other
Page 7 Volume 52 Issue 11
Donrsquot Forget to Collect
Water This Summer
We ask that all congregants take a break and
stay out of the building on the week of July 4th
Staff will be taking well-deserved vacation and
any time someone is the building there is a
potential that something will hap pen and a
staff member will be called We will see you all
following the holiday
MSUS Will be Closed
the Week of July 1-5
