Collins PTA Birthday Book Club
Parents, did you know that every year your student gets to select a FREE brand new book for their birthday, courtesy of the Collins PTA? Every month, a bulletin board in a main hallway is decorated with all the students’ names that have a birthday. The summer birthdays are added in as well: August with September, July with December, and June with May. One day each month, the Birthday Book Club celebrates the students’ birthdays by letting them select a new book!
The students celebrating a birthday in March can select their FREE book during lunch on Thursday the 16th in the kindergarten hallway. There is an announcement for birthday book day in the morning announcements and also during lunch. If your student is absent or misses their birthday book day, he or she can always come to the next month. Every student will receive a birthday book! If you have any questions, please email Monica Osten [email protected] or Debbie Paszternak [email protected]. The PTA Birthday Book Committee

Ah, cold and flu season is upon us once again, I thought it is a good time to review some “flu basics”
and also give you some assistance in making your child as safe and as comfortable as possible.
Influenza is spread by a virus through the air when infected people sneeze, cough or talk and less often
by contacting an object, like a handle or phone that has the virus on the surface. However, like many
contagious diseases, the person with the virus is contagious before they are sick and then for the next
few days. In fact, some people carrying the flu virus never have symptoms. In other words, there is no
way to avoid exposure to the virus.
The flu looks a lot like a cold and it is sometimes hard to distinguish between the flu and the common
cold, which makes it difficult to decide if a child should be in school. Briefly, the flu has a sudden onset
and high fever accompanied by chills, achy head, fatigue, dry cough, and dry nose. The symptoms of a
cold have a slow onset: a hacking cough, runny nose, and a sore throat. Fever, chills and headache do
not usually occur with the common cold. Recommended treatments for the flu are lots of rest, plenty of
fluids, and medication to relieve the symptoms.
Also, many people use the term “stomach flu” to describe vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. Although it
is not caused by the influenza virus, the “stomach flu” really isn’t the flu, but rather it is gastroenteritis.
A variety of viruses, bacteria, or parasites can cause gastroenteritis. Symptoms may also include
headache, abdominal cramps and fever. Once someone is infected, the most important aspect of
treatment is fluid and electrolyte replacement for the prevention of dehydration. Any of the over-the-
counter sports drinks are good for this. As always, for any of these infections always consult the doctor
for advice.
Please keep in mind that good health manners help keep illness from spreading and keep germs at
school to a minimum!
• Cover your mouth and nose with tissues every time you cough or sneeze
• Put used tissues in the trash
• Wash your hands often with soap and water
• Don’t share cups, straws, or utensils
• Stay home from school if you are sick and do not come back to school unless you have been free of
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever for at least 24 hours.
Thanks for your support, and stay healthy!

The health benefits of playing outdoors in winter!
While we are all enjoying watching the world class athletes competing in the winter Olympics in Sochi,
some wonder if it is safe or even wise to let their children play outside during the cold winter months. Contrary
to what many people believe, medical experts agree that outdoor play for children is healthy and essential, even
in winter!
Going outside to run, jump, yell, and wiggle allows children to use their large muscles and work off extra
energy. Breathing the fresh air is healthier for children than keeping them inside a closed building where germs
can easily spread. The indoor circulation of germs and bacteria is much more harmful to your child than playing
outside.
According the American Academy of Pediatrics, even children who are mildly ill, but active, should go
outside for short periods in the cold air to stimulate their immune systems.
There are many health benefits to playing outside in winter (if the weather is not severe-< 0 degrees
and children are properly dressed) Playing outside in the cold:
strengthens the immune system by allowing your child an escape from indoor germs and bacteria
and helps form a resistance to allergies.
stimulates your child’s imagination
promotes problem solving skills
promotes better sleep
provides Vitamin D:
provides some of the 60 minutes of recommended physical exercise that children need daily
(According the CDC, staying active for at least 60 min. a day can help children:
o Improve their health
o Do better in school.
o Improve their fitness.
o Grow stronger.
o Have fun playing with friends.
o Feel happier.
o Maintain a healthy body weight.
o Improve their self-confidence.
o Learn new skills.
10 fun activities children can enjoy while playing outdoors in winter:
1. Go sledding, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating/or play hockey
2. Build a snow fort
3. Snowball throw (hula hoops are good targets)
4. Help shovel the snow
5. Play tag or play at the park
6. Make a maze or make “snow angels”
7. Do the long jump, make snow piles to hurdle over or make a snow obstacle course
8. Play with toys that children would use in a sandbox
9. Use food coloring in water bottles to make “colored” snow
10. Hike the wooded trails near home

Is My Child Too Sick To Go To School? A common dilemma that parents face is, “When should I keep my child home from school?” It’s not an easy answer as parents are juggling the responsibilities of family and work more and more today. Here are some guidelines to follow. Know the difference between a cold and the flu:
Flu is a serious illness and symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, or muscle aches. With the flu, symptoms come on very quickly. It is advised to contact the doctor if these symptoms are present. Symptoms of a common cold include: stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and/or hacking cough. Often, cold symptoms come on gradually. Although the common cold is usually not serious, if symptoms are severe, it is a good idea to keep your child home to rest, rather than spread the cold to other children at school. Keep your child home from school if:
He has a fever. This means a temperature 100 degrees or higher. She has vomited. Keep your child home until they are able to tolerate solid foods or for 24
hours after the vomiting incident. He has diarrhea. Encourage good hand washing to prevent the spread to other family
members. She is coughing frequently or having any sort of breathing trouble. He has a rash that is spreading. Check with your child’s doctor to see if it is contagious
before sending your child back to school.
In order to help prevent the spread of illness in school, students with a fever 100 degrees or more may not return to school until they are fever free for 24 hrs WITHOUT the use of fever reducing medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Collin’s Nurse, Teresa Sowa, RN, is available every day and will be happy to answer any questions You may have.
