Happy August Play Therapy Colleagues,

I’d like to highlight two things this month. First, Saturday Workshop Proposals are needed for the 18th Annual Play Therapy Conference on the 22nd of February. The form is located on page 2. Proposals are due to me by September 15th. During each conference, participants are asked to fill out a needs assessment. The results of that are posted on the last page of the newsletter. That may help you determine relevant topics for Workshop Proposals. Please note that Dr. Crenshaw will be presenting on aggression and violence during the Friday keynote.

Second, I want to take an opportunity to thank Karen Renzema who completes her three-year term as President-Elect, President, and Past President of MIAPT and leaves the Board of Directors this fall. She has provided MIAPT with excellent service through dedication and commitment to its members and activities. Lindsay South, our current secretary, is also leaving the Board of Directors this fall following a two-year term of service to MIAPT that she provided with grace and aplomb. We will miss you both. We thank you for your generosity of spirit and commitment to the work of play therapy in the world. At the same time, we welcome Elizabeth Sawyer Danowski as President-Elect and Carmen Baldus as secretary and thank them for their willingness to serve on the MIAPT Board of Directors. Help me in saying both thank you to Karen and Lindsay and welcome to Elizabeth and Carmen.

MIAPT WEST REGIONAL CONFERENCE Dr. Risë VanFleet,

Filial Therapy with Challenging Families: Skills for Working Effectively with Parents in Play Therapy

OVERVIEW: Filial Therapy, as created by Drs. Bernard and Louise Guerney in the late 1950s and developed through the past 50 years, has proven itself through research and clinical experience to be one of the most effective interventions for children and their families experiencing a wide range of problems. Recent research has shown that those children and parents who need it the most often benefit the most. This presentation provides an overview of Filial Therapy, why it is unique among interventions even today, some of the compelling research, and several derivative models.

Its application with challenging child and family problems will be discussed via case illustrations and video, showing how it can be used to build healthier attachment relationships, change inadequate or damaging parenting behaviors, and provide support for the entire family as it shifts to more adaptable functioning. Many skills of Filial Therapy and its psychoeducational family change approach are useful when conducting other forms of therapy. These will be highlighted, and participants will practice some of them in small group role-plays. It is expected that participants will leave with enhanced skills for working with families, including those who offer special challenges to the therapeutic process.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Dr. Risë VanFleet is founder and president of the Family Enhancement & Paly Therapy Center, Inc. in Boiling Springs, PA, an organization specializing in the training and supervision of child, family, and play therapy professionals as well as provision of mental health services for children and families. Dr. VanFleet brings nearly 40 years of clinical, supervisory, and leadership experience in community mental health, health care, education, and independent practice settings to her workshops. She has trained and supervised thousands of clinicians internationally.

AN UPDATE FROM THE TREASURER- Heidi Weipert

Currently, the MIAPT finances are solid due to member support! Your membership and attendance at workshops and the annual conference make all the difference! Without each of you, MIAPT would not continue to prosper. Economic times are especially difficult for non-profit associations the size of MIAPT. Although finances are stable, losing members, late renewals and a decline in workshop and conference attendance could be debilitating for non-profits like MIAPT. We are strong because of YOU! The MIAPT board thanks you for making your membership a priority. We thank you for your recruitment efforts to add to our membership and to spread the word about our profession. We know that the bottom line here isn’t about the numbers or the membership list or about status…it’s about making the difference in the life of a child. When we assemble, we are united for our profession but most importantly, for those we serve. So once again, thank you for what you do and for assembling into this wonderful organization we call MIAPT!!!

We currently have $9,363.31 in checking and $4,508.15 in savings.
