The Fortress was designed by DickNugent and opened in 1993.
The Fortress plays to 6,813 yardsfrom the tips with a rating of 73.6 and aslope of 138. The course, also offer'stwo other sets of tees, the middle set at6,271 yards and the ladies' tees at 4,837yards.
Nugent patterned the course after theScottish links courses where the gameoriginated. Mounding, matted with fes-cue grasses, separates most of the wind-ing fairways and will quickly swallowan errant drive, as will the rough, whichcourse officials always keep severalinches thick.
Many of the bent grass greens areincredibly large, averaging 7,500 squarefeet each, leaving you some challengingputts. Water comes in to play on 10 ofthe holes. When Nugent finally sprin-kled in 69 bunkers, including 39 on theback, he had manufactured one toughtest of shot making. Golfweek pro-claimed the course one of "America'sBest Golf Courses" in 1993.
The course's amenities have every-thing you'd expect from a first-class out-fit. The barn-style clubhouse is home toa small restaurant/bar area and a proshop. Outside, a covered pavilion canhandle a large outing.
The practice area features a separatechipping and putting green, along with atarget-style range.
The Fortress, a par-72 championshipgolf course, offers several great packagedeals with the nearby Zehnder'sRestaurant, which is famous for its fam-ily-style dining with an early Americantheme and some tasty chicken entrees.
Frankenmuth is also known for itsmultitude of specialty shops and just afew miles away, the Birch Run outletmall offers everything a shopper couldbe looking for.

Ancient glaciers carved the deep clear lakesand dramatic hills that give golf in TraverseCity its breathtaking natural setting, and thefinishing touches on its 17 golf courses wereadded by the likes of Jack Nicklaus, ArnoldPalmer, Gary Player, Jerry Matthews and TomWeiskopf.
But let’s face it: the universe is full of well-designed golf courses. A truly world-class golfdestination needs to offer something more.Something genuine. It has to be a real placewith its own story, its own flavor, its own soul— and it has to offer a golfer something spe-cial once he or she leaves the course. That’swhat sets Traverse City apart.
Situated on beautiful Grand Traverse Bay inNorthern Michigan’s wine country, TraverseCity has long been treasured for its serenity, itsbeauty, and its unique mixture of relaxation, adventure and natural splendor, with miles ofbeautiful beaches and lakeshore vistas.
Its restaurants have given it a reputation as oneof America’s up and coming “foodie” towns(Bon Appetit magazine has listed it among thetop five in the nation.) and its vineyards areproducing some of the best wines in the coun-try. The beer is pretty good, too; Draft maga-zine calls it one of America’s emerging beertowns!
Shoppers are drawn to the city’s tree-shadedand pedestrian-friendly downtown, where adecade of thoughtful restoration and renova-tion has yielded beautiful results: scores offascinating boutiques, restaurants, coffeeshops and galleries, and lots of places to sitand relax. (Meanwhile, the Grand TraverseCommons, a former mental asylum, offerssome shopping and dining adventures of itsown, as do the nearby villages of Suttons Bay,Bellaire, Leland and Glen Arbor.)
There’s a wide variety in the lodging choicesopen to golfers, too. You can stay in a full-service resort right at the edge of the fairway,of course. But you might prefer to stake out aspot on the beach at one of the town’s manywaterfront inns, find a quiet hideaway in a hill-top vineyard chateau or rent a secluded cabinin the woods.
When that summer sun finally goes down, there’s still plenty to do. Nightlife in TraverseCity can be an evening of cool jazz in a down-town restaurant, some cutting-edge rock in aUnion Street bistro, or some gaming fun in alocal casino.
It’s easy to see why this “Golf Coast” of theMidwest has been awarded the #12 spot inGolf Digest’s list of the World’s Top 50 GolfDestinations, and has been called “America’s
Summer Golf Capital” by Golf Magazine. Justlast year, it was ranked #7 in the Top 10 GolfCities in the U.S.
Strange but true: Traverse City is a great placeto play golf, because there’s so much more todo than just play golf!

Teaching philosophy focuses onpositive communication and use
of drills to create an excitinglearning opportunity
So many times when speaking tomy clients or discussing the golfswing in a leisurely conversation do Ihear talk about swing positions at thehalfway back position or at the top ofthe back swing, but rarely do I hearpeople focusing on impact position. Imust say that as an industry as awhole we as teachers do not portraythe position of impact with enoughimportance. If we start this seasonout with a renewed focus on improv-ing our impact position, we all willbecome better golfers! Here is a pic-ture of Tiger Woods at impact. Let’stry and copy this position throughworking on a drill.
Try this drill:
IMPACT LOADER:
Get set up in your normal set upposition but lift the club face up andplace it in front of the ball on the tar-get side. Lean the shaft of the clubslightly forward while moving amajority of your weight on your leadfoot and towards your heel of thatfoot. Swing back and attempt toreturn to that position with an exag-gerated shorter than normal followthrough! It should feel like a simulat-ed punch shot that you are trying tohit lower. Hit ten of these in a rowand then take three normal swings.Repeat this practice simulation for 45minutes twice per week and you willstart to hear and feel better impact.
Good Luck!!

3. Joe arrives at the putting green and his ball is 3 feet from the hole.Because of the early morning rain, the cup is full of water. When he gets backto the cart, one of his fellow-competitors tells him that he does-n’t think that he can change putters. Like many senior events, this championship has really grown inpopularity and you need to sign up fast if want to be in the field. Thesenior division had over 100 players and the super seniors had over35.
This tournament is short, sweet and fast, so you better get off to agood start if you want to qualify for the match play field of 32 or 16for the super seniors.
With good conditions, Bill Zylstra set the pace – firing a round of67 (medalist) followed by Jeff Knudson with 69. The field was paireddown to the top 32 and the list of qualifying players is pretty impres-sive. Besides Zylstra and Knudson, Randy Lewis, Ian Harris, GregReynolds, Mike Fedewa and Ray Emsley (defending champion) allqualified and these players have all made their mark through theyears as top amateur players.
The super seniors fired some pretty strong rounds as well, withPete Doerr capturing the medalist honors with a round of 75 followedby John Lindholm with 76.
In the first round of match play, Zylstra had a very tight match, winning in 21 holes over John Armstrong. In the second round,Zylstra ran into a very hot Jerry Blake who won his first match 4&3and then finished off Zylstra 4&2.
Randy Lewis also ran into a buzz saw, getting beat in the firstround 7&5 by Mike Sequite.
At the end of the second round, all four ( Zylstra, Knudson,Richart & Lewis) the top four seeds had been eliminated from com-petition, proving again that anything can happen in match play com-petition.
In the super senior division, Pete Doerr won his first round match4&3 and all four (Doerr, Johnson, Lindholm & Gasper) of the topseeds advanced into the second round.
In the senior division, fifth seed Mike Raymond and 10th seedGreg Reynolds got on a roll and made into the final match whereMike and Greg had a closely contested match, with Mike Raymondcoming out on top winning in 20 holes.
The same kind of action took place in the super senior divisionwhere John French (10th seed) and George Dillon (11th seed) tiptoedthrough their matches to face each other in the final match. After 19holes of competition, it was George who took home the trophy.
Congratulations, Mike & George

Publinx State Match Play Returns North In 2013
The Michigan Publinx Golf Association will return to its northern home in 2013 tocontest its annual State Match Play Competition.
Farwell, MI has long been considered home for the SMP where Eagle Glen and ThePines Golf Club have served as the battlegrounds to determine some of the greatestchampions in the history of this fantastic event.
The tournament moved south for a few years to Bedford and Rochester, MI where thetournament was held at some great venues such as Bedford Valley Golf Club and TwinLakes Golf Club but the call from the northern atmosphere was to strong to resist in2013.
Dean Paesens and Joe Schumer (club managers) have done a fantastic job with thistournament through the years and look forward to welcoming back players from all overthe state to compete again in 2013.
Block off your calendar from July 26th to July 30th, get your game in shape and trav-el north to see if you can capture a SMP title in 2013.

Christian Vozza captured the last Michigan AmateurChampionship held at Muskegon Country Club in 2005.
This small golf course is a true test for these amateurs. ThisDonald Ross course is short but the greens can be very difficult.
First round action found great weather along with some goodscores starting with Tom Werkmeister, the 2013 Michigan OpenChampion. Tom scrambled through the first few holes but managedto turn in the best score of the opening round (70).
Four players trailed Tom by one shot along with ten more playersat two shots back. Thirteen more players would finish within fourshots of the leader, which made the second round very important toqualify for match play.
Second round action was much like the first with great weatherand more solid play from the Michigan Open Champion. Tomworked his way around Muskegon Country C.C. for another roundof 70 and grabbed the “Medalist Honors”.
Otto Black from Pinckney MI secured second place, three shotsback of Tom, followed by Mike Ignasiak from Saline at four shotsand Reed Hrynewich (Muskegon) along with Alex Dombrowski(Gaylord) tied for fourth at five shots back.

they defeated their opponents 3&2 and advanced to the final roundto face each other.
