  • Congratulations to Komatsu

The well-known Japanese excavator company Komatsu has in partnership with MHNE, recently organised training in Mental Health Awareness for members of its workforce at its factory in Birtley. The training looked at what makes for good, positive mental health as well as aspects of mental ill health and distress, and considered ways that friends, colleagues and family members might be supported; the effects of stigma and discrimination were also considered Trainers Kathryne Wray and Neil Kelly were both delighted with the commitment of the Company and those attending the programme. Neil Kelly said: “We felt it was a highly worthwhile experience and were very impressed by the level of interest of the staff at Komatsu and the undertaking by the Company to include mental health as part of its commitment to improving the health of its workforce”

Kathryne Wray commented that: “The training sessions were highly successful, and the feedback we had from those who attended was very positive and showed that the sessions achieved their aims of raising awareness and understanding” Neil and Kathryne are hopeful that other major firms will follow the excellent examples of Komatsu example and arrange workplace training sessions for their staff. The group steering this is a registered charity known as AFV Launch Pad (Armed Forces & Veterans). The main focus is geared towards those who have either just left or are about to leave the armed forces. There is a traffic light system for entrants:- Green – good to go Amber – take at risk Red – issues would be best met elsewhere. There was some debate regards this criteria. Next to take centre stage was Melanie Redale, who described the role of clinical commissioning groups in supporting the health of the armed forces community. Melanie pointed out some of the pitfalls when trying to decide the numbers of armed forces personnel being stationed/living in any specific area. She also informed the group that with regards the commissioning /NHS England there were three area teams specifically supporting Armed Forces, Melanie is the contact for the North. Last but by no means least, Andy Clarkson informed the group about Mental Health First Aid for Veterans. MH 1st Aid was established over 20 years ago – an Australian course, which is delivered under license. In 2009, MH 1st Aid England was established – a social enterprise company and in 2012 MH 1st Aid for Veterans was developed. Andy is looking to further trial this package, so if anyone is interested – please get in touch.

The North East Veteran’s Network meeting 21st June 2013. MHNE Ambassador, Dawn Hodgson, recently attended the North East Veterans’ Network meeting, which was held at Finchale Training College, and has compiled the following report for MHNE Members and Friends. The meeting was extremely well populated, 50+ participants, including Kevan Jones, Shadow Armed Forces Minister and Lt. General Robin Criggs, Armed Forces Lead – Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG). The agenda was both full and interesting. Jenny Haworth of Durham County Council give detail on Welfare Reform national changes and the likely impact of the changes. Some high or perhaps more realistically lowlights for County Durham were:-

    - An estimated 120,000 households are likely to be affected

    - An estimated loss per working age adult £560 pa

    - Approx one third of working people will be affected

    - Benefit cap to 150 households And it should be noted that County Durham residents’ wage level is already below the national average! Following on from what could have been a full day delivery, the group were introduced to the Avondale House Development, a new development in Byker Wall. The principal behind this development is to offer (14) good, supported houses to help achieve a smooth transition from military to civilian life.

  • MHNE Members News

MHNE would like to congratulate our long standing member Key Enterprises on reaching their 30th Anniversary. Key Enterprises sent us the following report which we would like to share with our members:

Work began in March, relocating the Woodwork and Paint Finishing departments into unit 36 from unit 38b, which is now closed. Both staff and service users played a part in helping to make the move go as smooth as possible and service users quickly settled into the new arrangement. With all departments up and running now, work is to start in the reception. A small area will be created where smaller items, made by service users, will be displayed and be available for customers to purchase. There is still a lot of work to do but our new look will be great when completed. Although preparations for our 30th celebrations continue, we have had to postpone the open day, which is now to be held on September 30th. In the meanwhile, we are still looking for donations for raffle prizes. If anyone can help, please contact us on telephone number 0191 2701138

WHIST - Winners of 2013 Bevan Prize for Health and Wellbeing

Well done to WHIST who were awared the prestigious Bevan Prize for Health and Wellbeing on 3rd July 2013 for their outstanding service. I’m sure you will join us in congratulating WHIST on this fantastic achievement.

Four organisations were shortlisted for their outstanding work: ABMU Pressure Ulcer Team, WEA- West Midlands, WHiST and Zest. WHiST – Women’s Health in South Tyneside – were declared the winners in this category and presented with their plaque by Christina McAnea of UNISON. WHiST is a gender specific voluntary organisation working in South Tyneside for over 27 years. It offers a broad range of integrated health provision as well as addiction support, rape crisis, a credit union and pre-vocational training as part of a holistic service. Many of its users would not otherwise engage with health services, are suffering financial hardship, mental ill health or domestic violence. The organisation currently has over 3,000 members with 350 women accessing the services each week, and works closely with local and health authorities to deliver their strategic health priorities.

  • MHNE welcomes new pilot scheme which will see nurses on police patrols to deal with mental health cases The BBC reported this week that nurses will go out on police patrols to deal with mental health problems. This scheme will be tested across four pilot areas: Derbyshire, Devon & Cornwall, North Yorkshire and Sussex force areas following the success of a street triage services in Cleveland and Leicestershire. Lyn Boyd, MHNE’s CEO, commented: “We welcome this approach and will be following the pilot schemes closely over their duration. “We are particularly concerned about the detainment of young people in custody suites across the North East and are currently working in partnership with our member organisations, who work with young people experiencing mental ill health, and North East Police Crime Commissioners to review the current situation and identify how we can reduce incidences of detainment. If the four pilot schemes prove to be successful, as in the case of Cleveland and Leicestershire, we would hope to see a similar approach rolled out to support young people experiencing mental ill health and who find themselves involved with the police. “Currently we know that in some areas the only option police officers have is to detain vulnerable and distressed young people in police cells simply because there is no other appropriate care provision available. “

Mental health problems affect many people – but it’s still something we rarely talk about.

Could your group or organisation run a project to start conversations about mental health?

Projects must be led by people with first-hand experience of mental health

The fourth and final round of the Time to Change grant fund opens on July 17

Time to Change is keen to receive applications from partnerships including organisations outside the mental health arena.

  • Young People and Mental Health

‘Shy Bairns Get Nowt’ DVD Review Shy Bairns Get Nowt’ is a short film produced by Northumberland, Tyne and Wear (NTW) NHS Foundation Trust that explores the day to day challenges faced by young people caring for a parent with mental health issues. The film is part of a wider project called ‘Voice of the Child’, which aims to increase awareness of the impact that caring for a parent can have and promote the ‘Think Family’ approach across adult and children’s services in NTW. From the perspective of young carers and their parents, the film looks at the mental and emotional issues that being a young carer can bring and investigates how NTW services can better support families. Several young people directly share their experiences of what it is like to be young carer; a common theme is that it can be frustrating, tiring and emotionally draining to be relied upon to support their parents, look after the house and look after themselves. Reluctant to talk to their teachers and friends, they can be left feeling alone and overwhelmed. One individual, who has experience of being a young carer, commented: “Young carers have to contend with the uncertainty and inconsistency of what lies at home, which was certainly what caused the greatest distress for me as a child. One day coming home to the smell of washing powder and cooked food and the next coming home to the smell of alcohol and the sounds of acute distress and paranoia.” Staff from North Tyneside Carers Centre interviewed in the film state that young carers are often mentally, emotionally and physically neglected, sometimes with detrimental and prolonged implications; this is not down to the parents, who want the best for the children, but due to the lack of support available and the difficulty services have in identifying young carers at an early stage. Often the young carer is the first to alert support services to mental deterioration in their parent, but usually services only come into contact with the young person at a point of crisis, such as when a parent is sectioned or the child is referred to social services, which they describe as ‘reactive referrals’.

They believe this could be avoided through a greater focus on prevention and early intervention with the whole family rather than with individual patients so that potential young carers can be identified and offered support at this initial stage. They state that whilst services often talk of ‘good practice’ when coming into contact with such families, clear guidelines asserting mandatory procedures are needed to ensure that young carers are given the support they deserve. which, whilst short, gives a true insight into the struggle that young carers often face. The case studies told directly by young carers are particularly powerful as they really make you sit up and take notice. There is a huge range of challenges that these individuals face on a daily basis, on top of all of the usual pressures that come with growing up and this film does an excellent job of making you realise just how difficult life must be in their position. “I think it was very important that the staff in this film were able to say how to improve the situation rather than just looking at faults in current practice, and I fully agree that prevention, to avoid these children only coming to them in a time of crisis, is the best method of supporting young carers. The family-centric approach is a good way to do that. “I hope that all NTW staff watch this film and think that it should be made available to other Foundation Trusts and service providers from all sectors who may come into contact with people with mental health issues across the country.”

Andrew Cummings, MHNE, said: “I found ‘Shy Bairns Get Nowt to be an informative, honest and inspiring film

Personal Health Budgets - support for CCGs

From April 2014, people eligible for NHS continuing healthcare (including parents of children) across England will have the right to ask for a Personal Health Budget (PHB). Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) will be responsible for delivering PHBs and support is now available via a NHS support and delivery programme. This builds on best practice developed during the successful three year pilot programme. See more here.

The role of the social worker remains one of personalisation’s many unresolved issues

Personalisation in social care is struggling and Community Care’s annual survey highlights the agenda’s tensions and unanswered questions.

Social workers must stand up against councils’ false version of personalisation

Councils are implementing restrictive practices and cuts, and ignoring their statutory duties, in the name of personalisation; it’s time social workers stood up against these practices - read more in this blog here.
