DESCRIPTION

MHH is a laid back mostly country style publication promoting primarily mom and pop small businesses across the north Georgia and surrounding areas. Outdoor recreation, green ideas and home remedies are sprinkled among the map and advertisers... it's a new and evolving publication put together each month. The theme is outdoorsy, friends and family time... and hand made creativity. As it grows, so will the content in more categories.

Check us out! We’re trying something New! On the cover MHH (Mountain Home & Hobbies) we are hitting up the good city folk now for stories and advertising... No surprise that there are tons of outdoor liesure things to do in the city; outfitter stores, parks and recreation, as well. But my heart will alway be in the mountains, to help keep you mom & pops in the public eye as much as possible. And why not?! If you’re like me you’re kinda torn between city and country life... they both have their perks. Most country folk visit the city from time to time and the beautiful north Georgia mountain area is one of the best nature escapes for any city-dweller.Keep us in mind for your advertising needs, any kind of print or web work. Thanks for your support. Cat & Rick

Over the past few days-a feeling of fall has arrived in the Southern Highlands of Appalachia. The time between the end of summer and when fall truly begins isn’t one of my favorite times of the year. Most of the gar-den-veggies and flowers-are at the end of their life cycle. The landscape takes on a look of death as it begins to die back for a season of sleep. As each summer ends, I find myself saving seeds just like Granny taught me. Although, I’ve read detailed instructions for seed saving-I use the simple method Granny did. For most of the flowers-I look for dried blossoms-pulling them apart to reveal the seeds. This method works well with Marigolds, Zinnias, Purple Coneflowers, Black-eyed Susans, and Cosmos. Pleurisy Root (Asclepias tuberosa)Butterfl yweed, Wnd Root, Tuber RootParts Used: Dried roots

This plant was named after the Greek God of Medicine - Asclepias, related to Apollo. The American doctors long ago gave great respect to this plant because of its ability to save lives. Its chief value is in bronchial and pulmonary complaints. Its powerful sweat inducing and expectorant properties have ensured that it continues to be used for colds, fl u, and respiratory problems. The native people still use it to treat pleurisy and deep chest infections. We use one teaspoon of chopped, dried roots to one pint of boiling water, for fi fteen minutes. Then we add some licorice, mullein, elderberry to the mix, and let it steep for another ten minutes. Strain and drink one cup twice a day till relieved. I also include this plant in my landscaping because of its brilliant orange fl owers and its ability to attract butterfl ies, hence another

common name, butterfl y weed.

Try Something New...

Think of your Dreams & then Get Your Feet Wet!

As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. Proverbs 26:21 NIV “I can’t find the thing,” I spat into the phone. “Which thing?” my husband questioned me. “The thing. The thing! The thing that tightens the car seat!” My patience thin, I shouted into the phone while my husband tried to explain how to install my daughter’s car seat. I hunched in the back of the van, stepping on toys and castaway ce-real, heat dripping down my face, trying for the life of me to find the magical tightening strap for baby Grace’s seat. The temperature out-side was ninety-eight. I was sure it was ten degrees hotter in my ve-hicle. Later that afternoon when my husband came home, an apology was necessary for my short temper and blistering tongue. “It’s okay,” he told me as he kissed my fore-head, “I knew you were just hot.”Heat is one of my trigger factors. When tempers quickly flare in any relationship, trigger fac-tors are often the reason. They are

outside influences that can affect our temperament and lead to con-flict. Trigger factors vary for each person. Mine are heat and clutter. One of my husband’s is hunger. If he is hungry, he will often snap at me for no good reason. He isn’t actually mad at me; he just has a hard time controlling his emotions on an empty stomach. Think of a match. At first strike, it flares and fizzes, then settles down for a quiet but quick burn. You can do two things before you get scorched. 1. Drop the match and leave it alone, it will sputter out in a hurry. Or 2. Throw the match on something and start an even bigger fire. When your spouse hits a trigger factor, it’s like those matches. You can drop the issue and choose to overlook some harsh words know-ing you aren’t the true cause. Or you can start a rip-roaring fire by focusing on the quick flare. Identify trigger factors for both you and your spouse. Next time you sense a fight coming on, look for those tricky little nuisances and make a choice. Drop it or start a fire. Choose wisely.

The Green Columnby Richard C. MacCrea,

Andrews Valley Initiative

Are you thinking of building or remodeling? the best time to start working on lower energy costs is before the plans are made. The greatest savings for the least cost starts with how the building sits on the site. By putting the most glass where the warm winter sun shines, the least where the hot summer sun shines, and designing the roof to keep summer sun off the house, heating and cooling costs can often be cut in half. Add protection from cold winter winds, allow cool summer breezes, and you have a building that not only costs much less to heat and cool, but it is much more comfortable. Is there more that can be done? yes. A little more money spent on good quality spray foam insulation, windows, and doors, and some homes hardly need heat or air conditioning at all. Air tight, well insulated buildings are much easier and less costly to keep comfortable. Following these principles first usually brings the greatest increases in efficiency for the least cost. It might also leave enough budget to afford some other green features. Everyone asks about solar and wind. In most areas of our mountains, the best of these options is a solar water heater with an electric tank water heater for backup. Attaching this system to radiant floor heating system can also be very efficient. The system is simple, very efficient, and might help you qualify for some tax credits. And everyone loves radiant floor heat! Geothermal heat pumps are also very efficient ways to heat and cool your home or building. They usually add thousands to the cost of a typical home. By using the ground temperature, they can extract heat all winter long. They are a great option where it is not possible to design the glass for solar. By adding spray foam insulation, the geothermal system can be smaller, and cost a little less. If you are buying new appliances, why not choose energy efficient models? Have you considered an induction stove, a smaller convection/ microwave oven instead of the standard oven? You might enjoy a basement root cellar too. You can also have a switch to shut off the outlets to your electronics. Many of these electronics use electricity even when they are not running. In some homes this can consume more than $20 per month. All of these are convenient ways to save energy. Another field being studied is energy efficient lighting. At this time fluorescent lighting is the best deal for most buildings. But this might soon be surpassed by LED lighting. Meanwhile the engineers have gone back to the laboratories and are developing some super efficient incandescent bulbs. Our next column will consider our Greening of Andrews Valley Program. Your question might be the perfect topic for a future column. Email me. Richard C. MacCrea is the director of The Greening of Andrews Valley, a program of Andrews Valley Initiative. He works in the field of energy efficient, green building.
