Registration & Networking Breakfast Welcome - Announcements TRAINER TIDBITS TRAINING TIDBITS will give both novice and experienced trainers an opportunity to take a look at some new training skills and revisit some established ones. Tidbits, small segments of information that can be used in a wide variety of ways, will focus on Introductions, Group Management, Content Design, and Improving Retention. These Tidbits will be yours to use. An examination of how you can use Tidbits to enhance the skills of others within your organization will be included as will how you can use them to enhance your own training performance. Jean Pfaendtner, LMSW, is the Manager of the Office of Recipient Rights for Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN). She has been a trainer in mental health services for 20 years and presents on a wide variety of topics in class, workshop, and conference formats. From Mental Health First Aid, to Making Sense of SSI/SSDI, to Person-centered Planning, to Building your Public Speaking Toolbox, Jean has shared her enthusiasm for training with 1000s. A family member of both a person with a developmental disability and a person with SPMI, Jean is a committed advocate for both consumers and families. Break RETHINKING E-LEARNING DESIGN Matt Ablan is the Learning and Development Strategist for the Grand Rapids, MI non-profit Hope Network, whose mission it is to empower people to overcome challenges to achieve their highest level of independence. Networking Lunch Redefining PPT Learn to identify common mistakes made in slide-based presentations, explain and discuss the different factors that lead to poor graphic design in slide-based presentations. List and explain seven principles for more effective slides, and apply those principles to your own presentations. Compare and contrast the experience of presenting information in-person versus presenting through online video, and identify the three most important questions about online video, while applying the seven principles. Learn about research findings regarding how multimedia influences learning and cognition. Develop an outline for converting a presentation into “train of thought” animated concept map suitable for use as a screencast. Identify different tools and features in PowerPoint that can be used to create “train of thought” videos. Learn to create your own “train of thought” presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. Matt Roberts, PhD, is both an instructional designer and adjunct professor of political science at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, where he has been for five years. He has taught in a variety of university settings for over ten years. He presents regularly at academic conferences on eLearning topics and issues of effective instructional practice. Registration & Breakfast (Provided) SELF-CARE BE YOUR OWN HERO Mandy Perl is the Clinical Supervisor of Home-Based Services for non-profit Kalamazoo Community Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services. Break EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE Emotional Intelligence (or Emotional Quotient [EQ]) is the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s emotions; discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately; and use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior. The bottom line is that EQ is our ability to manage our emotions and get along with others. Since getting along in the workplace has a direct impact on our livelihood, it’s highly beneficial to understand our EQ strengths and weaknesses. Ellen McNallyis a highly experienced human resource/training consultant with the Grand Rapids, MI non-profit Hope Network. She primarily has experience in training, design & development, facilitation and recruiting. She specializes in coaching, consulting, facilitation, design & development of participant training material and leader material Networking Lunch (provided) & Business Meeting LIFE IN TRANSITION: UNDERSTANDING & WORKING WITH TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS Davison Nicholashas been providing support and tools for self-understanding for six years in a multitude of professional settings. With 10 plus years as a behavior specialist for Kalamazoo RESA, five years of substance abuse counseling, one year of Multi-Systemic Therapy (focusing on problem sexual behavior for adolescents), and over one year of working with transgender and LGBQ clients, Davison brings a well-rounded and eclectic counseling style to every client. Each professional experience has brought unique challenges, but all have shared certain qualities – a focus on self-discovery and empowerment, rebuilding bonds between client and their family and loved ones, acceptance of self and a mindful approach to treating a multitude of mental health challenges (depression, anxiety, bi polar, obsessive compulsive disorder to name a few)… Davison’s treatment approach has been informed by behaviorism, training in Jungian techniques, years of Buddhism and meditation practice, and incorporating outside-the-box applications of modern technology and art practices, all in the hopes of developing an individualized and effective treatment experience for each client.
