    1. Introduction

    1.1. Origin of the Report

    This report is a partial requirement of MGT 251 (Organizational Behavior) course.

    1.2. Objective of the Study

    The objective is to see the practical application of theoretical knowledge of OB as

    well as OB practices in the company.

    1.3. Scope

    The scope of study was only one organization PHOENIX FINANCE &INVESTMENTS LIMITED

    1.4. Methodology

    1.4.1. Sources of Data: Data was collected from the company profile and direct

    interview of Deputy Managing Director of M. Shah Alam and 30

    employees.

    1.4.2. Design of Questionnaire: the questionnaire was designed by Kamrul

    Hassan who is our OB teacher and a blank copy of questionnaire is attached

    in the Appendix.

    1.4.3. Use of Statistical Tools: We used Frequency Distribution Table and Bar

    Chart to analyze the collected data.

    1.5. Limitations

    We had a limited time, money, data and experience. Data which is confidential innature was not provided to us.

    1.6. Report Preview

    In chapter 2 we brought up the organization overview, findings and analysis is in

    chapter 3 and conclusion and recommendations is given in chapter 4.

    2. Organization

    2.1. History of the organization

    Phoenix Finance & Investment Ltd. (former Phoenix Leasing co. Ltd.), one of theleading and reliable multi-products financial institution in Bangladesh was

    incorporated in Bangladesh on April 19 1995 as a Public Limited Company under

    the Companies Act, 1994 and started its operation on May 9, 1995 as a Non-

    banking Financial Institution named as Phoenix Leasing Co. Ltd. under Financial

    Institution Act, 1993. It has changed its name to Phoenix Finance and Investments

    Limited (PFIL) from February,2007 with a view to reflecting multi-dimensional

    financial activities of the Company and keeping a parity with the activities as it

    has been doing other than lease financing, which although, has remained as the

    prime area of the financial activities.

    Sponsor shareholders of the company includes a renowned corporate body namely

    Phoenix Insurance Company Ltd., a leading Insurance Company in Bangladesh.

    Others are individuals having wide range of experience in the field of commerce

    and industries.

    The main objective of Phoenix Finance and Investments Limited is to allocate

    scarce financial resources to capital investment through funding in capital

    machinery / equipment specially BMRE of the existing industrial enterprises tostimulate the industrial development of the country and also to provide financial

    assistance through Leasing and other multi-dimensional products & services to all

    levels of entrepreneurs for a wider range of asset acquisition contributing to

    national development as well.

    The Company has also diversified its products and services to such other areas asHousing and Real Estate, Bridge Financing, Short term and Mid Term Loan and

    start up working capital to cater to divergent needs of the economy. The Company

    operates a SME Branch in Dhaka for promoting small and medium enterprises

    (SME) exclusively for alleviation of poverty through creation of employment andgeneration of income on a sustainable basis. Besides this, PFIL has also 25%

    ownership of a Brokerage Company namely Phoenix Securities Limited havingmembership of DSE and the CSE to further diversify its investment activities

    Managerial Structure of Phoenix Finance & Investments Ltd.:

    As we all know that big or small, no organization can run its operation without a

    management system. Its function is to coordinate the work activities so that theyare completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people. So,

    Phoenix Finance & Investment Ltd. also has a management system. Their

    companys managerial structure is hierarchical.

    Their managerial structure is hierarchical so the authority or the power goes from

    the top to bottom. Chairman, Managing Director and Directors are the top level

    management here. From company secretary to asst. manager are the midlevel

    managers and from executives to department supervisors are the lower level

    managers. At the bottom of the managerial structure are the workers or employees

    of the organization.The diagram is given below to understand their organizationsmanagerial structure.

    Planning involves defining the organizations goals, establishing an overall

    strategy for achieving those goals, and developing a comprehensive set of plans to

    integrate and coordinate organizational goals. It is concerned with what is to be

    done and how it is to be done.

    The characteristics of above planning are given below:

    1. It is a formal planning.

    2. The goals are specifically stated

    3. Its purposes are providing direction, reducing uncertainty, minimizing waste

    and redundancy, and establishing standards that are used in controlling.

    4. Its a long term standing plan which is made out strategically.

    CHAIN OF COMMAND:

    In the Phoenix Finance and Investments chain of command geos down from the

    the top to bottom. To control an organizations works it is very important to

    manage its operations through chain of command. So to maintain chain of

    command chain 3 things are very important. They are:

    Authority:The rights inherent in a managerial position to tell people what to do

    and expect them to repor only to the manager.

    Responsibility:The obligation to perform any assigned duties.

    Unity of command: The management principle that each person should report to

    only one manager.

    Span of control: It is a number of employees a manager can efficiently and

    effectively manage.
