Tarpon Cay LodgeNot far from the bustling madness of Cancun on the northern shore of the Yucatan is the charming town of San Felipe and an unparalleled opportunity to target juvenile tarpon in the 5 to 25+ pound class. Recog-nized by the government for its biological wealth, this incredible fi shery has been designated a marine preserve, thus protecting this tarpon “nursery” from commercial netting and fi shing. Accommodations for six at Tarpon Cay Lodge are airy and bright with all rooms featuring ocean views, ceiling fans, air conditioning and private baths. Deli-cious, hearty meals are served in the main lodge with most anglers taking full advantage of the rooftop decks in the evening hours. Rate: $3,295 per person for a 7 night/6 day package

CampecheLocated on the western Yucatan, the quaint historic city of Campeche offers access to more than 80 miles of mangrove coast, hundreds of inlet creeks, and numerous channels rich with baby tarpon. Offering skilled and kind-hearted guides, a wonderfully quaint town with Mayan and Spanish history and fl ats-style sight fi shing

for feisty tarpon in the 5 to 30 pound class, Campeche is a favorite for saltwater anglers of all skills. Standard packages offer accommodations at the Ocean View Hotel, comparable to a Best Western. Light breakfasts are served at the hotel and ample lunches are served aboard the pangas. Guests enjoy evening meals (not included) at various restaurants in this charming historical city. Upgraded accommodations are also available.Rate: $2,725-$2,800 per person for a 7 night/6 day package

Isla del SabaloLocated about three hours north of Campeche by boat, Isla del Sabalo or Island of the Tarpon, offers anglers a quaint, small lodge venue from which to explore the most remote waters of the greater Campeche Bay region. With a vast array of habitats and crystal clear waters, anglers stalk juvenile tarpon from the bow of guided pangas with little if any competition. Groups of six enjoy ocean facing, beachfront cottages with private baths and tasty local fare served in the comfort of the main palapa overlooking the water. Anglers fl y into the town of Merida where they will be met and transferred 1.5 hours in an air conditioned van to the island.Rate: $3,295 per person for a 7 night/6 day package

The fertile mangrove-lined waters of Mexico’s northern Yucatan Peninsula represent the most prolifi c, juvenile tarpon fi shery in the world. Easy to get to, inexpensive, and well-suited to light tackle, this region is ideal for short trips or

for longer adventures that combine two or more of the destinations below. While considered a year-round destination by some, we recommend visiting between April and November.

Located on a white sand beach 90 miles south of Cancun, Pesca

Maya Lodge is a casual favorite for serious anglers in search of Ascension Bay’s best fl y fi shing. Here bonefi sh, permit, tarpon, snook and barracuda cruise an endless array of crystal clear fl ats, mangrove lagoons, chan-nels, and reefs. Anglers fi sh two per panga under the watchful eye of both a senior and junior guide, maxi-mizing their chances from the boat and while wading. Additionally, Pesca Maya is one of the only lodges in the region that operates year-round. For some of our most seasoned permit hunting clientele, this represents the opportunity for well rested fi sh in the off season months of August and September when all the other lodges have closed their doors. Pesca Maya offers ten air conditioned rooms all

with private baths and some with ocean views. There is also an ocean front terrace for relaxing and enjoy-ing pre-dinner appetizers. Meals are home-style, with breakfast buffet

and box lunches for anglers. For non-anglers, the chef will prepare a traditional Mexican lunch at the lodge. The lodge features its own fl y shop, 15 boats with some of the region’s best guides as well as a beautiful beach where you can relax while not fi shing. Stays of varying length are welcome and shuttles from the greater Cancun region can be arranged for anglers wanting to slip away from the bustle of the northern resorts for a few days of quality fl ats fi shing. Soulful, simple and fairly priced, Pesca Maya is a Fly Water favorite for our seasoned permit hunters and fi rst time saltwater anglers alike.

Located at the southern end of Ascension Bay in the heart of the

1.3 million acre Sian Ka’an Biosphere Preserve, Casa Blanca has established itself as Mexico’s premier saltwater destination. For nearly fi fteen years Casa Blanca has mes-merized anglers with its endless expanses of turquoise fl ats and its exceptional service. The guides here are among the most experienced anywhere, and many have dedicated the majority of their lives to learning the subtle intricacies of this prolifi c fi shery. In addition to bonefi sh, tarpon and permit, anglers can fi sh for numerous other species, in-cluding snook, barracuda, snapper and jacks, making this the ultimate destination for anglers keen on variety.

Remarkably, the fi shing in Ascen-sion Bay is actually improving due to the biosphere’s protected status and a growing conservation ethic among its inhabitants. Whether you are a seasoned angler in search

of permit, or a novice angler intent upon landing your very fi rst bonefi sh, you will be eager to revisit Ascension Bay year after year. For those who want the same great fi shing with non-angling companions or family members, we suggest Playa Blanca. Located just nine miles south of Casa Blanca, Playa Blanca offers a more intimate setting, a wonderful beach, Mayan ruins, and a wide range of outdoor activities. Packages vary in length and include a private air charter fl ight to the island from Cancun.

When placed on the spot and asked which bonefi shing des-

tinations in the world get our highest marks, no conversation is complete without mention of Chris Yrazabal’s op-eration in Los Roques. The reasons are many: the fi shery is truly remarkable; the accommodations are exceedingly tasteful; and the guides and staff are as good as they get. Technically an atoll within the Lesser Antilles, the Los Roques region is made up of more than 300 cays, with a vast diversity of saltwater habitats includ-ing magnifi cent coral beds, grass and hard sand fl ats, pristine beaches, and remarkable “pancake” fl ats. Bet-ter yet, nearly all of the fi shing is done while wading.

While the area abounds with tarpon, barracuda, and jacks, it is the world-class bonefi shing that draws anglers back year after year. Similar to Christmas Island, Los

Roques is blessed with consistent weather and water temperatures, not to mention high fi sh counts. Bonefi sh average 4 pounds with numerous fi sh in the 6 to 10 pound class. Meals and accommodations at Acuarela Lodge are greatly enjoyed by anglers and discerning non-anglers alike. For anglers who love to wade fi sh for high numbers of good sized bonefi sh, Los Roques is truly one of the fi nest fl ats fi shing destinations in the world today. Stays of varying lengths are available.

No doubt you have heard the stories from wide-eyed an-

glers returning from the heart of the Indian Ocean. For those who have not yet been, the tales, while true, are hard to swallow: steady streams of large, aggressive bonefi sh fl ooding pristine fl ats, huge trevally and bar-racuda, mysterious schools of super-charged milkfi sh, and some of the best fl ats guides in the business. Often referred to as the best bone fi shing in the world, the only downside to the Seychelles is that once you have fi shed here you will be forever spoiled. To complement the fi shing is the unpretentious luxury of Alphonse Island Resort. Truly a world

class resort, Alphonse offers guests refined international cuisine, tasteful waterfront chalets com-plete with private verandas, air conditioning, open-air showers,

private bathrooms, international direct access tele-phone, TV and mini-bar. For non-anglers the Seychelles experience is equally rich. Guests can choose from a list of incred-ible activities including, tennis, world-renowned scuba diving, a grand pool, and a glorious beach that entertains the majority of the island’s visitors. While truly a dis-tant paradise, traveling to the Seychelles dovetails nicely with layovers in Paris or extended travels in Africa.

The fact that virtually every fl y angler in North America has

heard of Christmas Island is far from coincidence. Amidst the vast inven-tory of the world’s saltwater destina-tions, Christmas Island is a unique and natural masterpiece that magically combines all the elements critical to fl y fi shing success. Endless hard sand fl ats, remarkable numbers of cruising bonefi sh and trevally, and consistent year-round weather await all who visit this unique atoll. Guides at Christmas Island Outfi tters have been handpicked for their overall level of experience and skill, calmness under pressure, and instructional abili-ties. Each day anglers will depart via truck or catama-ran for the day’s fi shing. Virtually all fi shing entails sight casting to visible fi sh while wading in shallow water. Christmas Island’s plentiful bonefi sh average 2 to 4 pounds, though each week presents numerous opportunities for larger specimens in the 5 to 10 pound class. The guides at Christmas Island Outfi tters are also among the atoll’s most skilled and passionate trevally

hunters and love nothing more than to share with their guests the thrill of hooking these monsters. Excellent blue water fi shing for tuna, wahoo, and trevally is also available. Catering to groups of eight to twelve

anglers per week, accommodations at Christmas Island Outfi tters consist of seven private bungalows that sleep two anglers each. Rooms are simple, clean and spa-cious and have private baths, fans, screened windows, and refrigerators. The common meeting area features a friendly bar and a casual dining area where fresh, simple meals are served in the morning and evening hours. Flexible by design to ensure quality fi shing, the daily schedule and meal times at Christmas Island Outfi tters often vary slightly in order to take advantage of the best tides and fi shing conditions. Whether you are an experienced saltwater angler or a novice keen on honing your fl ats fi shing skills, Christmas Island Outfi tters offers the fi nest and most intimate angling experience the island has to offer.

Experience has shown that even the most seasoned couples can

suffer from differing images of what a perfect trip to the Bahamas actu-ally entails. One might think of a sun-drenched pool, rum punch, snorkeling, and an endless white sand beach, while another thinks of a #4 Gotcha plopping gently down in the path of a cruising 10 pound bonefi sh. Located in the heart of Grand Bahama’s Lucay-an Marina, Pelican Bay Bonefi shing offers a unique and uncompromising solution to this common dilemma. Here, from a comfortable hotel complete with pool and outdoor bar, non-anglers can enjoy the area’s vibrant retail district, casinos and adjoin-

ing beaches, while the anglers in the group are whisked off by their guides to fi sh the trophy fl ats of the island’s remote western reaches. Non-anglers can arrange nu-

merous day trip options including golf, tennis, equestrian tours, glass bottom boat tours, and snorkeling, while the anglers can test their skills against some of the largest bonefi sh in the Baha-mas. Dinners are not included in the package price, enabling party members to enjoy the town and numerous restaurants each evening. Additionally, Pelican Bay is one of the easiest destinations to reach in all the Bahamas, and they welcome stays of varying lengths.
