Flexi-Voice Plus CardThe Flexi-Voice Plus Card provides up to six analog interfaces. The basecard accepts one, two or three dual-channel option cards which provide these interfaces. These interfaces can be voice channels such as FXS, FXO, and E&M or four-wire data channels such as OCU-DP or G.703. Each voice channel appears to a T1 network as a 64 kbps Mu-law encoded PCM channel with robbed-bit signaling. In an E1 network, each channel appears as a 64 kbps A-law encoded PCM channel with Channel Associated Signaling (CAS) in timeslot 16. The OCU-DP channel is a standard DDS channel which occupies one 64 kbps timeslot. The G.703 channel is a standard G.703 64 kbps co-directional channel which occupies one 64 kbps timeslot. Each channel can be assigned to any timeslot on either LIU.

Compatibility

Flexi-Voice Plus option cards require a certain revision level of firmware on both the Flexi-VPlus basecard and on the Platform Card for correct operation. To check the firmware revisiongo to the System Utilities screen on the Local Manager. Select Card Revisions . Read the firmware revision level of the Platform Card and the Flexi-Voice Plus Card under the F/W column. The revision level starts at -- and proceeds in the order A-, B-, C-, etc.

If a basecard or option card is not supported by your Platform Card firmware, the card nameappear as Unknown in the Card Type or Option Type heading on the various screens.If an option card is not populated on a basecard, or a basecard is not in a slot, the Card Type or Option Type will appear as -- .

If the firmware revision level of the Flexi-Voice Plus Card is not compatible with the Platform Cfirmware revision level, a “Communication Error ” message may appear. If this occurs, check that the Platform Card and/or the Flexi-Voice Plus Card have up-to-date firmware.

The Flexi-Voice/Flexi-Voice Plus Card (MP6360) D- firmware or later, (which is required to support G.703/64k), requires Platform Card E- or later firmware.

The Flexi-Voice Plus Cards with its various option cards is fully compatible with North AmeriT1 standards. It may also be used in an E1 environment with some limitations. Different coumay require variations in the various analog interfaces which are not supported. The Flexi-VPlus Card supports E1 timeslot 16 Channel Associated Signaling (CAS) for voice interfacesTB, 4W E&M) when the Platform Card is equipped with an E1 LIU. However the signaling protocol used on the A and B signaling bits is the same as the North American T1 standard (Pub 43801, ANSI T1.403-1995). The Flexi-Voice Plus will automatically select Mu-law PCMencoding for T1 and A-law encoding for E1 for OB, TB, 4W E&M and 4WTO interfaces.

Installation of Option CardsThere are no switches or jumpers on the basecard to configure. The number and type of chyou wish to use are selected by plugging in up to three option cards onto the basecard. Eachcard provides for two channels of the same type. Each option card type is described later inchapter. Figure 1 shows the Flexi-Voice Plus basecard with dual voice option cards.

Option cards plug onto the basecard using one or more connectors. The basecard connectosocket (female) contacts and the option card connectors have pin (male) contacts. The conhousing has a small key located at pin 1 to prevent incorrect mating. These surface-mount, density connectors have fragile pins, so they must be handled carefully. Each option card afour plastic snap-in standoffs which secure the card mechanically to the basecard. The stanhave a locking end which remains in the option card, and a non-locking end which allows remof the option card from the basecard. You must make sure that the option card is oriented alocated correctly before attempting installation. One corner of each option card is notched toin orientation, and also one standoff is offset to prevent incorrect installation.

Before handling a card, make sure that you are grounded with an ESD wriststrap, to prevendamage to the card.

Orient the option card so that the notched corner is at the bottom right as shown in Figure 1.

If the self-test passes, the ON LED is turned green; if the test fails, it remains redstatus is also reported in the Status column of the Manager’s Monitor, Diagnostic, and Configuration Slot Selection screens. Since a channel card cannot access the backplane unconfigured by the Platform Card, the power-on self-test does not check the data path througcard.

If you are installing a new card in a system, perform a complete self-test on the card by goingManager’s Diagnostics screen for that card and selecting Card Selftest . The Platform Card then configures the card with a test configuration, performs a ToNet loopback on the card, anda test pattern across the backplane to the card, where it is looped back to the Platform Cardchecked for errors. Both the data and signaling paths are tested. The result of the self-testreported on the Diagnostics screen.

Note that you can run a self-test on all of the cards in the system by selecting Shelf Self-Test in the Diagnostic Slot Selection screen.

Connect a terminal to the TERM port of the Platform Card and configure the Flexi-Voice Plus CaRefer to Local Management - 6.

Application Information

The Dual OB option card connects to telephone equipment for loop start and ground start applications.

Busy/Idle Indication

The Busy or Idle state of the OB channel is indicated on the front panel LED for that channeon the Local Manager’s Flexi-Voice Plus Monitor screen.

The FXS channel is busy when an off-hook phone causes loop current to flow and initiates outgoing call towards the network; or for an incoming call, when ringing is being applied to tphone. The channel LED will follow the ringing cadence, i.e. it turns off during the silent interbetween rings. The channel is idle when no loop current flows and there is no ringing.

The DPO channel is busy when the loop is seized or when battery polarity is reversed, otheris idle.

Battery Feed

The Dual OB option card provides a battery feed to the telephone loop. When the phone is offthis battery feed provides a constant current of approximately 25 mA from a nominal sourceVDC. This is called Talk Battery. Refer to Table 2 of this manual for maximum loop length. Whenthe phone is on-hook, the battery feed changes to a higher voltage of about 52 VDC, called SBattery.

The lower Talk Battery voltage reduces power consumption in the off-hook state, and the hiStandby Battery voltage provides compatibility with devices such as some answering machwhich require a certain minimum on-hook loop voltage.

TLP Values

The TLP values are entered through the Manager’s Flexi-Voice Plus Configuration screen.

Default 1 (Tx: +3.0dB, Rx: -9.0dB) is used for terminating PSTN service. This is the setting towhen a telephone or analog PBX trunk is connected to the Dual OB option card over a 2-wirwith essentially zero cable loss.

When the voice channel receives a network test tone equal to a digital milliwatt it outputs inanalog voice frequency interface a -9 dBm level. When an analog signal with a level of +3 dinjected into the voice frequency interface it transmits into the network a digital milliwatt.

You can adjust these default TLP values from +9 through -3 dB (transmit) and from -3 througdB (receive) in increments of 0.1 dB.

Default 2 (Tx: +3.0dB, Rx: -3.0dB) is used for dedicated Point-to-Point links where the far ean FXO. This essentially provides a 2-wire to 2-wire extension through the digital network.

When the voice channel receives a network test tone equal to a digital milliwatt it outputs inanalog voice frequency interface a -3 dBm level. When an analog signal with a level of +3 dinjected into the voice frequency interface it transmits into the network a digital milliwatt.

You can adjust these default TLP values from +9 through -3 dB (transmit) and from +3 throudB (receive) in increments of 0.1 dB.

Note Do not connect the Dual OB option card to lines that go outside the building. It is intended for connection to on-premise equipment only.

TLP Values

The TLP values are entered through the Manager’s Flexi-Voice Plus Configuration screen.

Default 1 (Tx: +3 dB, Rx: -3 dB) is used for dedicated Point-to-Point links where the far end FXS. This essentially provides a 2-wire to 2-wire extension through the digital network.

When the Dual TB option card receives a network test tone equal to a digital milliwatt it outpinto the analog voice frequency interface a -3 dBm level. When an analog signal with a leveldBm is injected into the voice frequency interface it transmits into the network a digital milliw

You can adjust these default TLP values from +9 through -3 dB (transmit) and from -1 throudB (receive) in increments of 0.1 dB.

Default 2 (Tx: 0 dB, Rx: -9 dB) is used for terminating PSTN service.

When the Dual TB option card receives a network test tone equal to a digital milliwatt it outpinto the analog voice frequency interface a -9 dBm level. When an analog signal with a leveldBm is injected into the voice frequency interface it transmits into the network a digital milliw

You can adjust these default TLP values from +6 through -6 dB (transmit) and from -3 througdB (receive) in increments of 0.1 dB.

SIGNALING MODE:-------> STND

This mode of operation is used when the far-end is an FXS loop start card or is network compwith 43801 signaling.

When the loop is in an idle state, the office end equipment (exchange) provides a battery wat ground and Ring at the battery potential. The Dual TB option card is on-hook which presehigh impedance to the loop (no battery current flowing).

When the office end equipment (exchange) initiates a call it applies a ringing voltage to the TB option card. This ring detection by the Dual TB option card signals the far end (through tnetwork) which allows the FXS card to apply a ringing voltage to the phone. When the far endoff-hook the network signaling allows the Dual TB option card to go off-hook thus completingcall.

When the far end initiates a call it goes off-hook which signals the network telling the Dual Toption card to seize the loop (TB off-hook). The office end equipment (exchange) sends dia

This mode of operation is used when the far end is an FXS ground start card or is network compatible with 43801 signaling.

When the loop is in an idle state the office end equipment opens the Tip lead and there is no potential across Tip and Ring. The Dual TB option card is on-hook which presents a high impedance to the loop.

When the office end initiates a call it supplies a ringing voltage to the Dual TB option card. Tring detection by the Dual TB option card signals the far end (through the network) which althe FXS card to apply a ringing voltage to the phone. When the far end goes off-hook the nesignaling allows the Dual TB option card to go off-hook thus completing the call.

When the far end initiates a call it receives a Ring ground that signals the network telling theTB option card to ground the Ring lead to the office equipment. The office end equipment reathe Ring ground by applying Tip ground which the Dual TB option card detects and signals thend (through the network) to apply Tip ground to its interface. When the far-end seizes the l(goes off-hook) it signals (through the network) the Dual TB option card to remove Ring groand go off-hook thus completing the connection.

DPT

DPT (Dial Pulse Terminate) is selected through the Manager’s Flexi-Voice Plus Configuratioscreen.

INTERFACE TYPE:-------> DPT

SIGNALING MODE:-------> STND

One common application for DPT is for DID (Direct Inward Dialing) service.

The Dual TB option card connects to a PBX trunk which provides battery (Tip at ground poteand Ring at battery potential). An incoming call from the network causes the Dual TB optionto seize the loop. The PBX detects loop current and responds by toggling the polarity of the bto transmit a wink to the network. The network then sends dial pulses to dial the PBX extenDial pulses are transmitted by the Dual TB option card by opening and closing the loop.

E&M Signaling

E&M Type I and Type V signaling require a separate ground connection between the switchequipment (PBX) and the transmission equipment (Metroplex™ 6000), for the return current E and M signaling leads. On the Metroplex™ 6000, this return path is labeled E&M-GND on the rear of the Wallmount Enclosure or the Universal System Shelf near the terminal block. Youmake sure that a connection is made between E&M-GND and the reference ground of the switchinequipment when using E&M Type I or V. Figure 8 through Figure 11 shows the E&M signaling types and their busy and idle states.

Note Do not connect the Dual 4 W E&M option card to lines that go outside the building. It is intended for connection to on-premise equipment only.

TLP Values

The TLP values are entered through the Manager’s Flexi-Voice Plus Configuration screen.

Default 1 (Tx: +10 dB, Rx: -3 dB) is used for terminating 4-wire leased line modems.

When the Dual 4W TO option card receives a network test tone equal to a digital milliwatt ittransmits into the analog voice frequency interface a -3.0 dBm level. When an analog signallevel of +10 dBm is injected into the voice frequency interface it transmits into the network a dmilliwatt. These default TLP values allow a total adjustment value of +16.0 through +6.5 dB(transmit) and +1.5 through -11.0 dB (receive) that can be controlled in increments of 0.1 dB

Default 2 (Tx: 0 dB, Rx: 0 dB) is used for terminating 4-wire leased line modems.

When the Dual 4W TO option card receives a network test tone equal to a digital milliwatt ittransmits into the analog voice frequency interface a 0 dBm level. When an analog signal wlevel of 0 dBm is injected into the voice frequency interface it transmits into the network a dmilliwatt. These default TLP values allow a total adjustment value of +6.5 through -3.0 dB (transmit) and +8.0 through -1.5 dB (receive) that can be controlled in increments of 0.1 dB.

Diagnostics

The Dual 4W TO option card supports the following manager-initiated diagnostics:

Network-Initiated Loopback

The Dual 4W TO card will also perform a loopback towards the network in response to a 272813 Hz tone sent from the network. There are two configurable parameters for this test. Thcan be set to respond to a test tone frequency of either 2713 or 2813 Hz, and the time-out perbe set to either 4 or 20 minutes. The time-out causes the loopback to end after 4 or 20 minusecond tone was not received to end the loopback.

In the Manager’s Flexi-Voice Plus Configuration screen, select

Network Loopback Freq(Hz): ----> 2713 or 2813

Network Loopback Timeout(Min): ------> 4 or 20 .

To start the loopback, the network sends a tone of the selected frequency for at least 2.5 seca level between 0 and -16 dBm0. Once the tone is removed, the Dual 4W TO card will perforloopback towards the network. The loopback is implemented by relays on the 4-wire interfacof the transformers. It then remains in a loopback state until either a second tone of the sefrequency, with a level between 0 and -16 dBm0, is received for at least 0.5 seconds, or theout expires. When the loopback is in effect, the 4-wire interface is cut off, the front panel LED Red to indicate test mode, and the Manager’s Flexi-Voice Plus Monitor screen reports

DC Sealing Current

The Dual OCU-DP option card provides a DC sealing current for activation or deactivation oCSU Loopback at the DSU/CSU. In normal operation (CSU Loopback not activated), the trapair (T,R) is kept positive with respect to the receive pair (T1, R1). To activate the CSU Loopthe OCU-DP reverses the polarity, which is sensed by the DSU/CSU and causes a loopback tthe OCU-DP. The DC sealing current is sourced from a 24 VDC internal supply, is DC refereto signal ground and the maximum short-circuit current is 21 mA

.Timing

The external DSU/CSU must be loop timed (synchronized) to the Metroplex™ 6000 system tiThe DSU/CSU does this by deriving its transmit timing from the receive signal present at itswire interface.

Configuration

Latching Loopback Enable or Disable

Enable - Allows the Dual OCU-DP option card to respond to inband latching loopback commfrom the Serving Test Center (STC).

Disable - The Dual OCU-DP will not respond to the inband latching loopback commands. Usesetting if you need to prevent accidental loopback activation which can sometimes be causeimitation of the loopback codes by customer data.

ZCS (Zero Code Suppression) Enable or Disable

Enable - Allows the Dual OCU-DP option card to overwrite an all-zeros byte (00000000) wit(00011000). This prevents strings of zeros from being transmitted toward the network.

Disable - The Dual OCU-DP will not overwrite an all-zeros byte. Always select disable if theline uses B8ZS Coding or for use in an E1 network.

Dual G.703/64k Option CardCompatibility - This option card requires Flexi-Voice Plus Card firmware revision D- or later, Platform Card firmware revision E- or later.

The Dual G.703/64k option card (Figure 26) provides a four-wire interface to a DTE. It is compatible with G.703 64k co-directional interfaces. Each card has two independently config64 kbps data channels which may be assigned to any unused timeslot on LIU A or LIU B.

Figure 26 Dual G.703/64k Option Card

Application Information

G.703/64k is fully compatible with both T1 and E1 networks. Channels may be assigned totimeslots in the ranges 1-24 for T1 and 1-31 for E1.

As shown in Figure 27, the Dual G.703/64k option card distributes data on a 4-wire loop to daterminal equipment with a G.703 interface.

The Dual G.703/64k option card co-directional interface consists of a transmit pair and a recpair. Each pair carries a bipolar signal which conveys 64 kbps data, 64 kHz timing, and 8 kHztiming. Data and timing on the transmit pair flow in the same direction. Likewise, on the recepair, data and timing flow in the same direction. Hence the term co-directional interface.

The 8 kHz octet timing is used to maintain byte alignment. The octet timing is conveyed on thewire interface during the last bit of the byte as a bipolar violation. Therefore, the bipolar violasignifies the end of a byte. In the transmit direction (towards the network), the first bit after a bviolation is transmitted as the first bit in the timeslot and the last bit in the timeslot is indicatea bipolar violation. In the receive direction, the last bit of the timeslot is indicated to the DTEa bipolar violation.

Note Do not connect the Dual G.703/64k option card to lines that go outside the building. It is intended for connection to on-premise equipment only.
