Dear Sorors of BMAC: ‘Tis the season to be jolly and of good cheer…the Christmas spirit is upon us. As the year nears an end, it is time for us to plan our Delta calendar for the incoming year. The Sorority will convene its National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in late summer of 2017. As you have read the recent information from the National President, we know that there has been a major cost increase in registration. Now is the time to plan our attendance at convention in order to have the most cost effective experience. It may be helpful to start your personal convention savings fund as a part of your plan. I would like to offer the following timeline for your convention related expenses:

January Pay your local/national Sorority membership dues

February and March Save funds to pay convention registration

April Pay convention registration fee and reserve hotel and secure roommate

May Book travel arrangements (air, train, or automobile)

June and July Save funds for discretionary spending at convention

Before ending this message, I would to remind all of us to enjoy the many performance art activities that the Christmas season affords us. Everywhere we turn, there is art to enjoy…music, literary, dance and theater…all genres are continuously presented, giving us nourishment for our souls. My fellow Delta National Commission on Arts and Letters member Suzzanne Douglas is co-starring in “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” (Dangerous Liaisons) at Baltimore’s Center Stage through December 23rd. BMAC joins Baltimore Alumnae and Baltimore County Alumnae Delta chapters in coordinating a DST theater party on Sunday, December 18th. August Wilson’s play “Fences” takes to the big screen, co-starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis with the movie opening throughout the nation on Christmas Day. President Obama will host his last Kennedy Center Honors arts event, which will air on December 27th on CBS-TV; Mavis Staples of the famed Staple Singers, singer-songwriter James Taylor, Al Pacino and others will be among the honorees. I hope you caught the VH1 Divas: UnSilent Night, a holiday concert broadcast on the cable channel on December 5th and featured Mariah Carey, Patti LaBelle, Vanessa Williams, Chaka Khan, and several others; if you missed it, check your cable guide because it will probably repeat a few times.

Let’s be thankful to celebrate another Christmas holiday and be determined to bring joy and goodness to our lives and to our communities. Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and best wishes for a good New Year!

Yours in Delta, Joe Ann Oatis Chapter President

Empowerment

Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter ~ “Shaped To Its Purpose” Service, Leadership and Empowerment

On Saturday, November 19, 2016 The Youth programs, EMBODI, Dr. Betty Shabazz and the Delta Gems collectively traveled on a college tour. We took a road trip to Dover, Delaware to visit Delaware State University a Historically Black College and or University. We met at Security Park and Ride with 28 students and 11 Sorors from all three committees and traveled via Gunther Bus Company leaving around 7:30am. Upon arriving around 9:30 am we gathered in the Administration Building on the campus and connected with our tour guide Dominick Vincent. He is a senior majoring in the Music Industry. Dominick provided the students with history of the campus as well as current dorms, buildings and campus life. It was a day of active engagement of walking and college facts along with the students were provided opportunities to ask questions. We had a delicious lunch at Conrad Hall which was a combination of lunch vs brunch items in which one could choose to eat. After our return to the bus but before our actual departure, the students were briefly visited by our Eastern Regional Representative Indira Ridgeway. She is a Junior majoring in Political Science with a Minor in Law Studies. She met and spoke with the youth about her college experience and her plans of becoming a Supreme Court Judge one day. The students asked her a few questions regarding college life and she was very enthusiastic to answer them. We returned back to Park and Ride at Security about 3:15 and the youth were returned to their respective families after a college day and a safe journey. As a side note, we also saw Several of our Chapter Sorors including President, First Vice President and Historian on the campus as they were attending a different work shop on that day. Although our numbers were few with 7 young men, 2, are seniors and they were excited to be there and were very interested in college and the next life after highschool. We are currently accepting applications for young male participants ages 10-17. Applications can be obtained from our committee members or you may obtain one on the website. Please spread the word so that our male youth group can continue to grow this coming Sorority year. Contact us at [email protected]

Scholar Spotlight – Linda Tsassong

My name is Linda Tsassong and I am a freshman at Towson University. I am currently a nursing major, taking 17 credits for this fall semester. I believe that Towson University is the perfect college for me. I love the fact that my campus has a lot of resources that the students can use to be successful in all their four years of college. Towson University has a career center, a writing center, a tutoring center and so much more. There is also a lot of diversity on campus and more than 200 organizations and groups that students can join to become involved. Since I will one day become a women’s health nurse practitioner, Women Studies: Women World Perspective is one of my favorite classes. I love that class because it gives me a chance to learn about how women’s issues and activism globally varies based on culture, religion, class, economics and political views. Except for the fact that I have to read a lot of material for my classes, I like genuinely like all of my classes and teachers. The classes are not easy, but I know that if I keep up with the readings, turn in my assignments on time, and study hard, I will make the good grades that I want. Just in the course of three weeks that I have been at school, I have made tremendous progress just in the way I think. My perspective about what school is has changed. Instead of seeing it as a place where I just go to make good grades to pass, I now view it as a chance to learn new things that I didn’t know before, and a chance to become a knowledgeable global citizen. In general, the thing that I like most about college is the independence because it allows me room to grow and mature freely.

Violets to the Finance Committee The Scholarship Committee would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Finance Committee for going beyond the call of duty supporting us in our vision for 2016-2017. We have a very aggressive fundraising program this year and we could not do it without your support and partnership. You have not missed a detail in providing us with timely and accurate documentation after every collection. We are grateful for your sisterly spirit in allowing us to extend the Silent Auction until after chapter meeting to help us raise additional funds for our scholars. Thank you again for partnering with us and helping us to reach our goal in a professional manner. Sisterly, The Scholarship Committee. November Silent Auction Our first Silent Auction for the year was a success! The committee raised over $100 at the November chapter meeting. Special thanks to Sorors Eley and Hopewell for their donations this year. If you have items that you would like to donate, please contact any member of the Scholarship Committee or send an email to [email protected]. If you missed our first auction, no worries we have two more scheduled for 2017. Stay tuned, you never know what treasures you will find at our auctions.

Scholar Linda 2016

Scholarship Traveling Tour On October 26, 2016 members of the Scholarship Committee attended FAFSA Night at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School. More than 30 students and parents were in attendance! A representative from Upward Bound gave a 45 minute presentation to review how to navigate the FAFSA process. The presentation was highly informative and the students and parents were quite engaged. Many of the students in attendance visited the Scholarship booth and inquired about eligibility to apply for our scholarships. Additionally, the committee was able to connect with and establish a good rapport with one of the guidance counselors. This will aid the committee in the possibility of receiving applications from the Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School students.

SCHOLARSHIP HELPFUL TIPS ON HOW TO MANAGE EVERY DAY STRESS College can be a stressful time for anyone. Some stress pushes you to meet goals by studying more, working harder or sticking with a challenging task. But sometimes stress reaches an unhealthy level that can prevent you from functioning well and meeting your goals. Recent research found that over half of all college students had been, at times, so stressed that they couldn’t function during the last year. Your health, school performance and social life can all suffer when stress becomes so much to handle. That’s because stress can affect your mood and ability to think clearly. It can also weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to getting sick.

Silent Auction 2016

BE REALISTIC. Pulling yourself in different directions will only stress you out, so try not to over commit yourself or do extracurricular activities when you’re super busy with school.

CURB YOUR CAFFEINE. Caffeine might help you study in the short term, but it interrupts sleep and makes you more anxious, tense and jittery. This obviously ups your stress level. Try and drink no more than one caffeinated beverage a day.

DON’T SELF-MEDICATE. Some students drink, take drugs, smoke and use other unhealthy behaviors to cope with stress. However, these behaviors can exacerbate stress by negatively affecting your mood and health.

REACH OUT. If you’re stressed out, talk to your friends and family. If you feel like you can’t handle the stress on your own, schedule an appointment with a counselor on campus.

Mervo 2016

Chronic stress can lead to or worsen serious health problems, including high blood pressure, autoimmune illnesses, digestive issues, depression and anxiety. So it’s important to manage stress, prevent negative stress levels and speak up if you are feeling overwhelmed. Here are some tips for managing stress while in college. WATCH OUT FOR SIGNS OF STRESS OVERLOAD. Symptoms of too much stress can be physical, emotional, mental and behavioral. While everyone is different, some common signs are: memory problems, trouble concentrating, racing thoughts, irritability, anger, sadness, headaches, frequent colds and changes in sleep or appetite. KNOW YOUR STRESS TRIGGERS. Stress and its triggers are different for everyone. Certain people, places or situations might produce high levels of stress for you. Think about what causes you stress, and brainstorm solutions. If public speaking and presentations make you stressed, start researching early and practice several times. If there are friends or social situations that cause extreme stress, you may want to avoid them when you are already feeling tense or overwhelmed. EXERCISE. All forms of exercise reduce stress hormones, flood the body with feel good endorphins, improve mood, boost energy and provide a healthy distraction from your dilemmas. Plus, exercise may make you less susceptible to stress in the long run. Find physical activities that you enjoy and try to devote about 30 minutes to them each day. RELAX. While it’s impossible to eliminate all negative stress from your life, you can control the way you react to stress. Your body’s natural fight or flight response can take its toll. When you’re faced with a stressful situation that your mind perceives as a threat, it sends various chemicals, like adrenaline and cortisol, throughout your body. As a result, heart rate and breathing speed up and your digestion slows down. This tires out the body. Relaxation techniques are a huge help in calming you down, boosting mood and fighting illness. Try a variety of techniques like yoga, breathing exercises, meditation and visualization to see what works for you, and schedule a relaxation break every day. MANAGE YOUR TIME WELL. Time can seem like a luxury in college, but there are various ways to manage it effectively. First, focus on one task at a time. Multitasking rarely works. Jot down everything you need to do in a calendar or a task management app/program, prioritize your list and break projects into single steps or actions.

On November 1, 2016, The Economic Development Committee hosted a Social Security Workshop at Cross Keys. The Boyd Britton Group of Merrill Lynch and Prime America provided the presentation. It was an intimate workshop and participants asked several questions and received a wealth of information. *Here are some tips that you may find useful:*

• Speak to a financial planner to see if delaying receiving your social security payments will be to your advantage. Each of us have different circumstances.

• Apply 60 - 90 days ahead. • There is no earnings penalty once you reach

your full retirement age which depends on your birth year.

• Everyone should start receiving benefits by age 70 because there are no additional benefits gained from waiting and social security benefits are not issued retroactively.

The 2nd Financial Literacy workshop, ESTATE PLANNING, will be December 15, 2016 from 6:00pm - 7:30pm at Shop Rite of Howard Park. More Information at bmacdst.org<http://bmacdst.org>.

The Giving Season: Six Tips for Making Smart and Effective Charitable Donations This Holiday Season

The holidays are a popular time for charitable donations. With so many charities to choose from, it's more important than ever to ensure that your donation is well spent. Here are six tips that can help you make smart and effective charitable donations.

1. Choose your charities wisely Choosing worthy organizations that support the causes you care about can be tricky, but it doesn't have to be time-consuming. There are several well-known organizations that rate and review charities, as well as provide useful tips and information on how to donate and choose a charity (see sidebar). To get started, here are some things to consider:

• How the charity plans to use your gift. Contact the charity by phone or go online to find information about the charity's mission, accomplishments, financial status, and future growth.

• How much the charity spends on administrative costs. If a charity has higher-than-average administrative costs, it may be spending less on programs and services than it should. This could also be a sign that the charity is in serious financial trouble. In addition, if a charity uses for-profit telemarketers, then it may get very little of the money it raises, so ask how much of your donation the charity will actually receive.

• The legitimacy of the charity. Take the time to check out the charity before you donate. Ask for identification when approached by a solicitor, and never give out your Social Security number, credit-card number, bank account number, account password, or personal information over the phone or in response to an email you didn't initiate.

• How much you can afford to give to the charity. Stick to your giving goals and only give what you can afford. Legitimate fundraisers will not try to pressure you and will be happy to send information that can help you make an informed decision regarding your donation.

2. Maximize your donation through a matching gift If your employer offers a program that matches charitable gifts made by employees, you can maximize your charitable donations. Some matching gift programs may have specific guidelines — for example, they may only match a gift up to a certain dollar limit, and the charity may need to provide additional information.

3. Make automatic donations If you're looking for an easy way to donate regularly to a favorite charity, consider making automatic donations from a financial account. Automatic donations can benefit charities by potentially lowering fundraising costs and by establishing a foundation of regular donors. You'll also benefit, since spreading your donations throughout the year may enable you to give more and simplify your record keeping.

4. Look for alternatives to cash donations Although cash donations are always welcome, charities also encourage other types of gifts. For example, if you meet certain requirements, you may be able to give stock, direct gifts from your IRA, real estate, or personal property. Keep in mind that you'll want to check with your financial professional to assess potential income and estate tax consequences based on your individual circumstances. Other alternatives to cash donations include volunteering your time and using your talents to improve the lives of others in your community.

5. Consider estate planning strategies when gifting Another option is to utilize estate planning to make a charitable gift. For example, you might leave a bequest in your will; give life insurance; or use a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder annuity trust, or charitable unitrust that may help you give away the asset now, while retaining a lifetime interest. Check with your financial or tax professional regarding any potential estate or tax benefits or consequences before making this type of gift.

6. Remember the importance of record keeping If you itemize when you file your taxes, you can deduct donations you've made to a tax-qualified charity — however, you must provide proper documentation of your donation to the IRS. Keep copies of cancelled checks, bank statements, credit-card statements, or receipts showing the charity's name, date of your donation, and contribution amount. For donations or contributions of $250 or more, you'll need a detailed written acknowledgment from the charity. For more information and a list of specific record-keeping requirements, see IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions.
