Last month was truly a memorable time. On Saturday, March 28 in Delaware County, Pennsylvania an inspiring, extraordinarily special occasion in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. occurred. On hand to witness this historic day were 25 BMAC Sorors, who attended the Omega Omega Ceremony and luncheon tribute held in honor of Delta Founder Pauline Oberdorfer Minor. Founder Minor was a longtime resident of Philadelphia and she passed away in 1963. During the Sorority’s Centennial year of 2013, Philadelphia Alumnae sought to find her gravesite to place a memorial monument. They could not find where she was buried; it was as if our dearly beloved Founder simply disappeared from the earth. Thanks to the devoted and steadfast spirit of Soror Gloria Akers and the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter members, not knowing our Founder’s final resting place was not acceptable. After a long and circuitous search, her gravesite was found. She was buried in Eden Cemetery in a pauper’s grave alongside of three other persons. It seems like through the years Founder Minor, who had been an educator, author, and mezzosoprano, had fallen on hard times. Philadelphia Alumnae had a beautiful monument erected for our Founder and included the names of the three other persons as well. This was so moving. Our 16 th National President, Dr. Thelma T. Daley, composed a special memorial Omega Omega ceremony for this occasion. Sorors, this was indeed, a lifetime Delta moment for me. It has inspired me to be a better Delta, to help our community even more, and give a little deeper. Last month was also Women’s History Month and Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter made history on Saturday, March 21 when we presented the Delta Authors on Tour (DAOT) at Owings Mills Mall. Thanks to the fine effort of our Arts and Letters Committee, led by Taifa Coger-Boatright and Sharon “Shea” Webb the book event was well attended and well planned. The majority of the participating authors sold out of their books and expressed that our event was one of the best DAOT events ever! We began last month by celebrating our heritage with our Founders Day Luncheon on March 8, featuring Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby and we ended the month on March 28 remembering our heritage as we paid tribute to Founder Pauline Oberdorfor Minor. This is a good year, an overall good time to be a member of the greatest Sorority on earth—DST! Now, BMAC, all roads lead to the Blazing Southwest Region to Houston, Texas where Grand Chapter will convene our 52 nd National Convention. Please be mindful that convention registration opens on April 7, 2015 and you will need to have all of your information (member number, password, system ID), ticket selection, hotel choices, etc. identified and at your fingertips when you start the registration process. This will indeed help you have a smoother registration experience. Don’t worry if you do not get your first or second hotel choice. I hear that there are plenty of rooms available and enough buses to transport us to and from our hotel to the convention activities. After all, Houston is the fourth largest city in the nation and it has much to offer with southern hospitality combined with urban chic. Please go online to the Grand Chapter website and read the many details in the 2015 Call to Convention…an informed Delta is a better Delta! Spring is technically here and I hope this coming Easter weekend will bring a renewal of the earth so that we can see God’s finest art work—beautiful nature at springtime. Happy Easter, Sorors, and know that HE LIVES! Yours in Delta, Joe Ann Oatis Chapter President

Dear BMAC Sorors: I am feeling on top of the world as we move into the month of April. Last month was truly a memorable time. It’s that time again for Spirit In the Arts!

Sunday, May 17, 2015

6pm - 8pm Macedonia Baptist Church 718 W. Lafayette Avenue

Baltimore, MD 21217

This year promises to be just as exciting as last year. We are featuring The Pauline Wells Lewis Legacy Choir, Baltimore City High School Choir, our own Soror Linda Little and her Troupe, along with Soror Mariah C. Foote. If you were at the last Convention, Soror Foote sang at the Social Action Luncheon. We are asking Sorors to support our efforts by purchasing a patron page, an ad, as well as tickets. Patrons are $5 and tickets remain at $25 each. We are challenging each Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Line to take out a page. Get your line sisters together and take a picture to be featured in our souvenir book. Calling all Alpha Gamma Sorors in the chapter! - Let's take a picture and purchase a page. Sorors please take a flier to your church and be responsible for selling this wonderful spirit filled program to your members. Maybe they would like information about one of our performers as a fundraising idea. Ad prices: Full Page - $150: ½ Page - $75: ¼ Page - $50: Business Card - $25: Inside Back & Front Page - $300 Our goal is to sell 300 tickets, but we know that 400 would fill the house. Our goal for full page and half page ads is 10 or more. Sorors you have always been there for Arts and Letters. We now ask you to show up and out as BMAC has been known to do.

The money raised is for BMACs public service programs. We want to be able to financially do all that is positive in the community next year with that special BMAC power.

How was Spirit in the Arts last year? Ask someone who went - they would say “FABULOUS”!!

The EMOBDI Committee had an exciting time celebrating Women’s History Month. The young men wrote in their journals about a female that has made an impact in their life. Many of them chose to write about mothers, teachers, and neighbors. Famous Women Jeopardy was played to test their knowledge of African American Women in History. Soror Blanche Love served as our facilitator. Twenty five questions were presented. The final Score was 10-9 and each player was a winner of a McDonald’s gift card. Much work is still needed in teaching our young men about Women’s History. Soror Gail Mayfield led the group in a STEM Activity Challenge, The Pencil Copter. They were given a bag of supplies: 2 pencils, 2 pieces of colored paper, 2 manila folders, masking tape and 1 push pin. They were divided into 3 groups of 3 and each one created their own unique copter. They had to collaborate and talk with one another in order to create the copter. The boys enjoyed their time working together. We continue to collect change for Clean water for Haiti.

SHABAZZ & GEMS On Saturday, March 21, 2015 the participants of Shabazz and Gems combined and had an extremely productive session. The girls focused on positive self-esteem and character building. This task was accomplished by individuals recording positive qualities and areas of improvement about themselves. Participants were open and honest in their sharing. Suggestions were given by both the Sorors and the girls concerning the areas for improvement. The physical component was an aerobic workout lead by a Gem. Each participant was given the opportunity to express their creativity by making a friendship bracelet. The day brought the girls closer together and increased their respect for each other. Kudos to the committee members for continuing to take it to the next level!

What great team building!

Greetings Sorors! The month of February was National Collegiate Transition Month and last month Project A.C.E. celebrated with the local collegiate chapters via multiple activities. National Headquarters charged us to have three different types of activities where the alumnae and collegiate chapters could come together for bonding and fellowship. The three activities were a program, a business meeting, and a community service or social activity. As a chapter BMAC was able to hold 2 of the 3 activities. The social action committee along with the Alpha Gamma chapter at Morgan State hosted an Affordable Care Act Forum for the students and faculty at Morgan State University. In addition the Project A.C.E committee held a bowling social with our local Baltimore collegiate Sorors at the AMF bowling alley in Pikesville, Maryland. Project A.C.E. is looking forward to many more activities with our college Sorors as the school and sorority year winds down with our collegiate Sorors. Our next program is the Women of Success Series: Part 2 that focuses on the transition to post graduate life in Delta and everyday life challenges. The program will be held in late April with the time and location to be determined. If you have any questions please contact the chair, Nicole Parker at [email protected].

The Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter's announcement of its School America kick-off was televised live from Metro Delta Head Start Center on February 19, 1990. The announcement was a part of the Coffee with WJZ-TV News Anchors Don Scott and Marty Bass. This station is an ABC affiliate. Reader registration, storytelling sessions, and book giveaways have also addressed the School America initiative. The Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter has provided emergency assistance to fire victims in the Reservoir Hill community, holiday baskets for needy families at the Center, hats and mittens for the Head Start students and gift certificates to a children's clothing store. One of the highlights of the 1989-1990 program years was recognition from IBM for implementing a highly proficient computer education curriculum for preschool-aged children. As a result of this outstanding program, IBM donated several computers to the Metro Delta Head Start Program. In April 1990, IBM sponsored an open house at the Center to highlight the effectiveness of the Metro Delta computer education program. Among the dignitaries visiting the Metro Delta Head Start program was Past National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Current President of the National Council of Negro Women, Soror Dr. Dorothy I. Height. Soror Dr. Height's visit was a surprise to Sorors in attendance at the open house. Soror Dr. Dorothy Height was also surprised and elated to equate the name Metro Delta with the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Sorors of the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter and the Center's Director also welcomed visitors from the NAACP, The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), Johns Hopkins University, Towson State University and the Mobius Corporation. Twenty-five Sorors have volunteered their time and expertise to make the Metro Delta Head Start Program an effective and viable part of the Reservoir Hill community of Baltimore City. Soror Yvonne Addison, Chapter President Soror Ramona D. Williams, First Vice President and Public Service Liaison

HERITAGE & ARCHIVES

At the 1990 National Convention in Miami Beach, Florida, Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter presented the chapter’s involvement in Head Start at the Program Planning and Development Program Lab. Below is the narrative prepared by then First Vice President Ramona Williams that was passed out to Sorors who visited the Program Lab. Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter Involvement Since 1988, the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. has been the delegate agency for the Metro Delta Head Start Program. The major focus of the chapter's involvement has been in the area of educational development. Other areas of the sorority's Five-Point Programmatic Thrust which have been implemented through a variety of activities throughout the year are economic development, physical and mental health, and social and political action. The Chapter co-sponsored, with State Delegate Tony Fulton, a For Kids' Sake Conference. The purpose of this conference was to present to the Maryland State legislators representing Baltimore City an agenda to address the need for increased funding for children's issues. The conference w a s attended by Head Start parents as well as other interested persons in the Reservoir Hill community. Our 1988-1989 statistics showed that a total of 42 parents had completed neither high school nor a G.E.D. program. The Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter has sponsored several workshops on continuing education. Through these workshops, chapter volunteers have assisted parents with basic educational needs, goal setting, and improved decision-making skills. Chapter volunteers have served as resource personnel in aiding parents in developing effective parenting skills, family communications skills, and how to develop and use a household budget. Several parents participated in typing classes and computer training workshops. Chapter volunteers have been instrumental in aiding eleven (11) parents to complete the requirements for a G.E.D., and a total of six (6) parents have enrolled in courses at the Community College of Baltimore. The Chapter has sponsored a voter's registration trainee workshop and a census awareness seminar. Metro Delta Head Start held its first Father and Son Tribute which addressed Summit Ill.

Service, Leadership, and Empowerment

On Sunday March 8, 2015 The Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter held its Founders Day Celebration at The Forum Caterers. Our theme was Uncompromising Commitment to Community: Service, Leadership, and Empowerment. The afternoon was filled with fellowship and sisterhood. It was a time to reminisce about the founding of our illustrious sisterhood 102 years ago on the campus of Howard University and to highlight the accomplishments of the chapter in the Baltimore Metropolitan community since it’s chartering on March 1, 1987. We were inspired by the Tribute to Our Founders by Dr. Thelma Thomas Daley, 16th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Our Keynote Speaker The Honorable Marilyn Mosby challenged us with the “power of now” now is the time as women to be agents of positive change within our community. The United Voices of Delta ensemble comprised of members of Columbia Alumnae Chapter and the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter lifted our spirits with two musical selections. Chapter members as well as community members were recognized for their outstanding service and dedication to the community and the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter. Special thanks and violets to the members of the Founders Day Committee for their unwavering commitment to making this celebration another memorable event in our chapter’s history.

Financial Fortitude – 3rd Vice President, Tary Scroggins

I owe a large amount of money to the IRS. Can I pay what I owe in installments?

Unfortunately, not everyone gets a refund during tax season. If you are in the unenviable position of owing a large amount of money to the IRS, you may be able to pay what you owe through an installment agreement with the IRS. With an installment agreement, the amount of your payment will be based on how much you owe in unpaid taxes and your ability to pay that amount within the agreement's time frame. Although you are generally allowed up to 72 months to pay, your plan may be for a shorter length of time. To request an installment agreement, fill out Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request, and attach it to your tax return, or mail it by itself directly to your designated Internal Revenue Service Center. If your balance due is not more than $50,000, you can apply for an installment agreement online at IRS.gov.

The IRS will generally let you know within 30 days after receiving your request whether it is approved or denied (if you apply online, you'll get immediate notification of approval). If the request is approved, the IRS will send you a notice detailing the terms of your agreement. You will also be required to pay a fee of $120 ($52 if you make your payments by direct debit). You can make your payments by check, money order, credit card, payroll deduction, or direct debit from your bank account. Keep in mind that even if your request for an installment agreement is granted, you will still be charged interest and may be charged a late-payment penalty on any tax not paid by its due date. This interest and any applicable penalties will be charged until the balance you owe to the IRS is paid in full. It is important to realize that the fees and interest charged by the IRS for an installment agreement can add up. As a result, before you enter into an installment agreement, the IRS suggests that you consider other alternatives, such as getting a bank loan or using available credit on a credit card.

IT’S A NEW DAY AND A NEW BEGINNING

II PETER 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and ELECTION sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble.

As we are getting excited about the flowers blooming, the trees blossoming and the birds singing, we are also getting excited about Elections for our chapter. Let us pray and seek to better understand the issues and concerns in our sisterhood. We are compelled to respond as faithful members of our sorority. Let us pray that our eyes not be blind so that we might see each other as equals in dignity. Let us pray for ears that will hear the concerns of each sister. Let us pray for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voices of those we put in office. So let us pray for discernment, so that we may choose leaders who hear us, love us and will follow in the oaths and beliefs of our sorority. Rev. Dr. Kathryn Carver April, 2015
