Sorors, during Love Month, let's pledge to bring joy to the lives of those in our community. There are two ways that you can assist BMAC in fulfilling our goals this month. Support the P&MH Committee in its effort to provide information regarding healthy living as we partner with the American Heart Association and Macy's on February 18th at Security Square Mall. Contact Sorors Kim Knight (410-615-6181), LaShaunna Lipscomb (518-331-0825), or Edna Green (443-690-5115) to assist. You can also attend one other activity such as the Insurance Seminar on February 16th at the Towson Library, 6pm sponsored by the Economic Development Committee. Contact Sorors Stephanie Berry (410-336-3104) or Tammy Mays (410-262-7536) for additional information. In other words, share love with the community and share love with yourself. Peace and Love!!

Spirit in the Arts, This is our 5th year!! Make it Big!! We can do it!! Ticket sales, patron, ads, and sponsorships are what we need to makes Spirit in the Arts successful. We can go all the way with 400 tickets sold. We know that you can do it. We are "Calling all Sorors" to buy a ticket for yourself, family and friends. Spread the word of and how wonderful Spirit has been. This year it will be fantastic. We are asking that each soror purchase two tickets along with encouraging others to buy a ticket. This will assist in making this the year above all years. With our total membership along with your family and the community, we can garner enough money to fund the chapter's public service programs. We, the Arts & Letters committee will have tickets, patrons, and ad forms, available before and after the Chapter Meeting and at every Executive Board Meeting. The patron list, flier, and ad forms will be sent to you electronically so that you can forward them to your family and friends. The tickets will remain at an affordable $25 dollars. If you want to sponsor any of our youth program members, or scholarship recipients, let the Chairs of the various committees know. We want to include the entire community. If you have any information about corporate donations and or sponsorship, please contact us. Every little bit helps. There has been an overwhelming request for Torens Johnson and Charles Arnette & Company to return. Stay tune for the list of other performers to come. The Delta Diva Book Club (DDBC) is in full gear with our gatherings and literary exchanges. Here is the list of books for February-April. (They are also listed on the chapter's website) February: Friday Night at Honeybees - Andrea Smith March: The Girl on the Train - Paula Hawkins April: The Search For Susu – Soror Marcella McCoy

Thanks to all of the Sorors who acted as chaperones, ticket sellers and team check-in volunteers for this year’s Basketball Academy. High School Students from Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Prince George’s County public and private schools had an opportunity to participate in SAT Prep (general and math), College Admissions, Technology, Rites of Passage, SHERO and Doing the Wrong Thing. They were also able to explore the Reginald Lewis Museum, The Great Blacks in Wax Museum, The Museum of Industry and the Coca Cola Bottling Plant. After completing an invigorating day of academics and cultural enrichment, the students participated in exciting basketball games. Your support of this annual activity was greatly appreciated.

Soror Victoria Christopher Murray will be at the Enoch Pratt Free Library - Waverly Branch, 400 East 33rd Street, Baltimore, Md. 21218 on Wednesday, February 8th at 6:30pm. She will be discussing her book Lust (A Seven Deadly Sins Novel). The Little Library The Little Library located at the front door of Matthew Henson Elementary will always be in need of books for children. We ask that you bring books to the school or at any time drop them off at the school office for the Little Library. This is an ongoing project.

We are still in need of books for the Dunbar High School Library. Please bring books to Chapter Meeting or Executive Board.

Scholar Spotlight – Koya Yancy

Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter’s (BMAC) Impact…

Our resources, time and encouragement are all being put to good use in our current scholars. Our scholars are reporting a stellar first semester:

Freshman – McDaniel College, Onesha Smith completed 12 credits with a 3.0 GPA

Freshman – North Carolina A&T University, Koya Yancy completed 14 credits with a 3.93 GPA

Sophomore – Community College of Baltimore, Tiwaladeoluwa Topia completed 14 credits with a 3.0 GPA

Sophomore – Loyola University, Shahirah Kahn completed 17 credits with a 3.33 GPA

Junior – Georgetown University, Christian Boxley completed 18 credits with a 3.18 GPA

A note from Christian Boxley:

Hi Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., Hope you all had a great holiday season too! I had a lot going on last semester, but I'm happy to say that looking back on it, last semester was definitely the most worthwhile so far. I ended last semester with a 3.18 all while balancing 18 credits, two jobs, leadership positions in my extra-curricular activities, and a social life. I'll attach my grades from the past semester below. I'm also in the midst of applying for summer internships, so I just updated my resume. I'll attach that too if you all are curious about what exactly I've been up to these past couple years.

SCHOLARSHIP TIPS Scholarship winners have secrets to winning. There are certainly ways to increase your odds of winning scholarships. The following seven C’s are ways you can increase your chances of obtaining sought-after scholarships. CONTENT There is plenty of content detailing directions of how to successfully apply for scholarships. Such content exists in resources like books, testimonials of scholarship winners and websites. Utilize this information to create your own road map to gaining scholarship funds. COMMITMENT Applying for scholarships is a numbers game. The more you apply to, the better your chances of winning. Unfortunately, it is difficult at times to win a scholarship and not everyone is guaranteed to win one. But people do win scholarships! Most of these winners will tell you that it is vital that you never give up on applying for scholarships because if you do not apply, you are guaranteed to never win one. COMMUNICATE Let others around you know that you are looking for scholarship opportunities to gain experiences that scholarship providers will value. Let your teachers, mentors and guidance counselors know so that they can provide letters of recommendation to include within your scholarship applications. CAUSES Take opportunities to volunteer for causes you are passionate about. It looks great to scholarship providers and, if it is a cause you are really passionate about, you will also likely stick with it longer. CREATE If opportunities are not presenting themselves, create them. If you are interested in something and your school does not have a club for it already, create one. Taking initiative looks great and if you are passionate enough to create the opportunity, you will likely enjoy participating in it. COMPLIMENT When it comes to scholarship applications, don’t be afraid to toot your own horn! Your achievements are something to be proud of and something providers should absolutely be aware of. Remember, each achievement gives you an extra edge and will help distinguish you from the competition.

CURRICULUM Try to balance out your curriculum by taking a mix of more and less challenging courses. Remember, a lot of scholarships do take your grade point average into consideration. If you balance your courses, you are much more likely to be able to maintain a higher GPA since your coursework will be manageable.

Love Month- Sisterhood Is…

Sisterhood is not just the combination of Greek letters, the beauty of crimson and cream it's about friendship and trust sharing hopes and dreams it doesn't lie in the depths of pledges, songs and played parts it's what lies deep within the depths of our hearts for each other growing together becoming strong, as one helping each other, building each other to withstand and overcome supporting your sister when she is in need wiping her tears and easing her pain when she bleeds being a shoulder to lean on in times of despair letting her know that you'll always be there sisterhood is not just strolls and dancing at parties, the fun you have at step shows it's the warmth and affection you have for each other and the relationships that grow it's the tug at your heart when she's going through it's you doing what you can do to help her pull through sharing her burdens and easing the load she may bare it's about being consistent and showing your care!

Grandparents Can Help Bridge the College Cost Gap For many families, a college education is a significant financial burden that is increasingly hard to meet with savings, current income, and a manageable amount of loans. For some, the ace in the hole might be grandparents, whose added funds can help bridge the gap. If you're a grandparent who would like to help fund your grandchild's college education, here are some strategies. 529 college savings plan A 529 college savings plan is one of the best vehicles for multigenerational college funding. 529 plans are offered by states and managed by financial institutions. Grandparents can open a 529 account on their own — either with their own state's plan or another state's plan — and name their grandchild as beneficiary (one grandchild per account), or they can contribute to an existing 529 account that has already been established for that grandchild (for example, by a parent). Once a 529 account is open, grandparents can contribute as much or as little as they want, subject to the individual plan's lifetime limits, which are typically $300,000 and up. Grandparents can set up automatic monthly contributions or they can gift a larger lump sum — a scenario where 529 plans really shine. Contributions to a 529 plan accumulate tax deferred (which means no taxes are due on any earnings made along the way), and earnings are completely tax-free at the federal level (and typically at the state level) if account funds are used to pay the beneficiary's qualified education expenses. (However, the earnings portion of any withdrawal used for a non-education purpose is subject to income tax and a 10% penalty.) Under rules unique to 529 plans, individuals can make a lump-sum gift of up to $70,000 ($140,000 for joint gifts by a married couple) and avoid federal gift tax by making a special election on their tax return to treat the gift as if it were made in equal installments over a five-year period. After five years, another lump-sum gift can be made using the same technique. This strategy offers two advantages: The money is considered removed from the grandparents' estate (unless a grandparent were to die during the five-year period, in which case a portion of the gift would be recaptured), but grandparents still retain control over their contribution and can withdraw part or all of it for an unexpected financial need (the earnings portion of such a withdrawal would be subject to income tax and a 10% penalty, though).

What happens at college time if a grandchild gets a scholarship? Grandparents can seamlessly change the beneficiary of the 529 account to another grandchild, or they can make a penalty-free withdrawal from the account up to the amount of the scholarship (though they would still owe income tax on the earnings portion of this withdrawal).

Finally, a word about financial aid. Under current federal financial aid rules, a grandparent-owned 529 account is not counted as a parent or student asset, but withdrawals from a grandparent-owned 529 account are counted as student income in the following academic year, which can decrease the grandchild's eligibility for financial aid in that year by up to 50%. By contrast, parent-owned 529 accounts are counted as parent assets up front, but withdrawals are not counted as student income — a more favorable treatment. Outright cash gifts Another option for grandparents is to make an outright gift of cash or securities to their grandchild or his or her parent. To help reduce any potential gift tax implications, grandparents should keep their gift under the annual federal gift tax exclusion amount — $14,000 for individual gifts or $28,000 for joint gifts. Otherwise, a larger gift may be subject to federal gift tax and, for a gift made to a grandchild, federal generation-skipping transfer tax, which is a tax on gifts made to a person who is more than one generation below you. An outright cash gift to a grandchild or a grandchild's parent will be considered an asset for financial aid purposes. Under the federal aid formula, students must contribute 20% of their assets each year toward college costs, and parents must contribute 5.6% of their assets. Pay tuition directly to the college For grandparents who are considering making an outright cash gift, another option is to bypass grandchildren and pay the college directly. Under federal law, tuition payments made directly to a college aren't considered taxable gifts, no matter how large the payment. This rule is beneficial considering that tuition at many private colleges is now over $40,000 per year. Only tuition qualifies for this federal gift tax exclusion; room and board aren't eligible. Aside from the benefit of being able to make larger tax-free gifts, paying tuition directly to the college ensures that your money will be used for education purposes. However, a direct tuition payment might prompt a college to reduce any potential grant award in your grandchild's financial aid package, so make sure to ask the college about the financial aid impact of your gift.

WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? EVERYTHING

I Corinthians 13:1, 13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. Down through the years, love has weaved itself throughout our lives. If we each go back and look at our lives, at each place where we stopped, at each place where we recalled some meaningful experience, at each place where we recalled some boost, some shove that pushed us in the right direction instead of the wrong direction; I think that in every instance where we made the right choice, we’d find that in some marvelous way, at that moment, LOVE was involved and came to us. Love came to us when we became a part of this sisterhood; it was the reaffirming of our belief that we are lovable. Love expands our ability to love someone else and as the years go by, we realize that love comes over and over again. As sisters, love comes again and again in spite of our mistakes and shortcomings. When you look back, when you consider the way you’ve come when you consider how you’ve overcome, you have to say that once in a while, along the way love has come to you. So sisters, when you love someone you will be loyal to her, no matter what the cost. You will always believe in your sister; always expect the best of her and always, always stand your ground in defending her. SO WHAT DOES LOVE HAVE TO DO WITH IT??? EVERYTHING!!!!

For ten days out of the year, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer FREE admission to everyone:

The mission of Metro Delta News is to notify the membership of chapter meetings, activities, and events. The Metro Delta News aims to promote and acknowledge the services of the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter. It is the voice of the chapter that summons members to work. It shall encourage devotion to God, and our beloved sisterhood. It shall foster academic excellence, cultural enrichment, physical and mental awareness, and social action. It shall make known the achievements of Sorors that reflect our nine cardinal virtues, service, and education. It shall be a resource for the membership and recognize their labor.
