Measurement Systems We have our own the “English” system Science involves a lot of converting, the English system is hard

to convert Metric system is easier to convert because it is based on

powers of 10

Standard Measurements A standard measurement system means everyone is using the

same measurement system. Why do is it important in science that all measurements are in

the same system? So we can compare measurements and know what all scientists mean. We are

speaking the same “language!”

SI (Systeme International) is another name for the metric system

THEY ARE THE SAME THING!

Every country in the world uses the metric system except the US, Liberia and Burma.

Types of Measurements

Length, Mass, Weight, Mass, Temperature, Time, Density and Volume

Page 11: Metric System Scientific Measurements. Measurement Systems We have our own the “English” system Science involves a lot of converting, the English

Length Distance between two points Unit is the meter Use rulers or meter sticks to find

Page 12: Metric System Scientific Measurements. Measurement Systems We have our own the “English” system Science involves a lot of converting, the English

Mass The amount of matter that makes up an object Unit is the gram The mass of an object does NOT change unless we ADD or

SUBTRACT from it

Page 13: Metric System Scientific Measurements. Measurement Systems We have our own the “English” system Science involves a lot of converting, the English

Weight A measure of the force of gravity on an object Weight can CHANGE depending on the force of gravity

EX: Earth and Moon

Unit is the Newton (N)

Volume Amount of space occupied by an object Unit is the Liter Volume for a Solid: Length x Width x Height = answer cm3

Volume of a Liquid:

Measure in a graduated cylinder

Page 16: Metric System Scientific Measurements. Measurement Systems We have our own the “English” system Science involves a lot of converting, the English

Volume Water Displacement:

-Used to find the volume if an object is not square of a liquid

-Put water in a graduated cylinder, amount water rises is the volume

-Ex: If a rock causes the level to rise from 7 ml to 9 ml then the volume is 2 ml

Time Interval between two events Unit is seconds

Temperature Measure of how hot or cold something is Unit is Kelvin Celsius = scale based on the freezing and boiling points of water 0 ⁰C = freezing point of water 100 ⁰C = boiling point of water

REMEMBER:

NO LONELY NUMBERS!

ALL NUMBERS WILL NEED A UNIT!!!!
