The MSc2 design studio “Transdisciplinary Encounters” offers a laboratory for students interested in examining the productive relations that can be established between architecture and other disciplines. These may be artistic disciplines, providing instruments such as literary description, narrative, montage and scenario writing, or disciplines from social sciences, providing fieldwork techniques related to social spatial practices and user behaviour. The studio encourages students to develop experimental methods of architectural analysis and design from the study of these disciplines in order to obtain innovative instruments and methods for the development of their work. Through experimental in-situ fieldwork the studio will examine a particular context by adopting and adapting techniques from a particular scientific or artistic field, such as social geography, anthropology, sociology, and philosophy or sculpture, literature, or cinema. Through these investigations, detailed quantitative and qualitative mappings will be drawn, based on statistical analyses, socio-historical research and in-depth interviews. These techniques will be combined with particular instruments and methods such as sections, soft-maps and collages. Site research will thus result in evocative and speculative drawings, models, texts, and films. In a concise presentation the students are requested to evoke their projects and visions on a larger urban scale, as well as to propose site-specific interventions. Analysis will be carried out through in-situ fieldwork. Architectural instruments and methods, and their relation to those of another discipline, will be discussed in a series of thematically focused seminars. Design will be carried out through conventional design studio tutorials.

Through these investigations, detailed quantitative and

qualitative mappings will be drawn, based on statistical analyses, socio-historical research and in-depth interviews.
