Teaching English Vocabulary• Teaching English vocabulary is an important area worthy of effort and

investigation. Recently methodologists and linguists emphasize and recommend teaching vocabulary because of its importance in language teaching.

• Vocabulary is needed for expressing meaning and in using the receptive (listening and reading) and the productive (speaking and writing) skills.

ILLUSTRATIVE or CONTEXTUALIZATION

• An illustrative sentence is an example that clarifies the usage of a particular sense of a lexeme.

An illustrative sentence will help you• Clarify the meaning of a lexeme• Use a word in the correct grammatical context, and gain insight into the

culture and literary style of the language.

The teacher not only presents the word but also gives the definition explaining the word’s meaning. It is essential for the teacher to bear in mind that, while explaining certain words, he should use the language that is comprehensible for the learner.

EXAMPLES: He is very clever. He reads lot books. He does the homework.He understands to learn, and devise or apply ideas.

Finally, in the illustrative sentences step the teacher puts a short illustrative sentence on the board so that the meaning will be clear to anyone reading the notes afterwards. Students might enjoy trying to make some illustrative sentences by themselves as well.
