1 PURPOSE

• Purpose of this document is to clearly explain the installation procedure of the water

proofing membrane for the areas as specified in the scope statement

2 SCOPE

• Purpose of this document is to clearly explain the installation procedure of the water

proofing membrane for the sub structure, super structure including all wet areas like

Toiles, balcony, kitchens and pantry.

• Roof water proofing is not included in the scope of this statement for which a detailed

method statement will be submitted later.

3 DEFANITIONS

• CLIENT : PRIVATE ENGINEERING OFFICE

• CONSULTANT : MS DAR AL HANDASA

• CONTRACTOR : MS AL BALAGH TRADING AND CONTRACTING CO WLL

4 APPROVED MATERIAL AND AREAS OF APPLICATION

Water proofing system consists of application of priming membrane and 4 mm thk

bituminous membrane. Protection screed concrete of 50 mm thickness is done in areas

specified in drawing. Following materials are used for the water proofing

Primer : PolyPrime SB - (200 liter drum)

Membrane : 4mm thick Bituplus E 4200 (1 m x 10 m roll)

Protecton Board : Bituboard 4 mm thick – for vertical areas

Manufacturer : Henkel poly Bit Industries – UAE & KSA

5 RESPONSIBLITIES

• SR PROJECT ENGINEER AND PROJECT ENGINEER is responsible for the proper

implementation of correct method statement. QA engineer will ensure QA and QA

aspects as per the contractors QA QC policy which is to be submitted as a separate

document

• PPE – Refer Clause 13 of Approved HSE Plan

• SAFETY ARRANGEMENTS

A. Safe access and Egress to provided

B. Proper lighting to be provided

C. Fire extinguishers and fire Blanket has to be provided with each torch

D. Proper welfare to be provided

5 WORKING METHOD

• SURFACE PREPARATION WORKS

After blinding is completed the surface is ensured dirt and dust free. This is

ensured by blowing air with a compressor or hand blower and by manual

cleaning. Approval from consultant is to be taken after this

• TOOLS REQUIRED.

Following tools are made readily available during the works

A. Painting Brush and Roller Brush for priming

B. Gas With Torch

C. Measuring Tape, Knife, trowel etc

• PRIMING

Primer is applied to the concrete surface slowly at the rate of 4-6 l/SqM. Brush

or roller can be used for this. Allow primer to dry before application of

membrane. AS the viscosity of primer is low it easily penetrates into the holes in

the concrete. Primer allows the adhesion of membrane with the concrete

surface

Page 6: METHOD STATEMENT FOR WATER PROFFING WORKS

• MEMBRANE

Water proofing membrane is installed using propane gas torch. As the torching

progresses on the membrane, the embossing starts to melt exposing a shiny

bitumen surface. Membrane is roll forwarded and pressed firmly against the

primed surface to get it stick properly. Subsequent shifting of torching is done

when membrane is unrolled and adhered to the surface. All the ends are torched

very well for very clear fixation. It is ensured that air is not blocked inside the

membrane. This is possible as the primer surface is also torched and hot gases

will go upwards.

Over laps are the lapping distance between two adjacent sheets and they are as

follows. These are as per manufacturers recommendations.

Side over lap - 100 mm ( parallel of 10 m side)

End over lap - 150 mm ( parallel to 1m side)

Sealing of laps are done with round tipped trowel. Adequate heating is done and

this ensures flow of uniform melted bitumen compound evenly in the bead that

oozez from the membrane adges. Excess compound is pressed into the seam

with heated trowel.

• TEMINATIONS

Water proofing membrane is terminated in locations as per

drawings by providing a 25 mm x 25 mm groove. Heating of

membrane is done and the t ip is inserted to the groove. The groove

is sealed with sealant – Poly seal PS whip is recommended by the

manufacturer.

The area of termination in the wet areas l ike toi lets, balcony,

kitchen etc wil l have to be inside the skirt ing. So the vertical ly the

membrane wil l be coming by a distance of at least 150 mm. Angle

f i l ler of 50 x 50 mm sand cement mortar is provided in the corner

of rooms so that membrane is not bend 90 degrees in one turn.

For the substructure water proofing is terminated at the retaining

wal l just 200 mm below the FGL there. So that the termination

point is fully concealed and better performance is ensured.

• MOCKUP AND INSPECTIONS

Mockup of the complete system may be done for an area not less

than 100 sqm and inspection request should be raised. Further

work should proceed after approval of the mockup.

Inspect ion for each area has to be done prior to applicat ion of

primer and concrete screed works.

• PROTECTION FOR MEMBRANEANCE

50 mm approved concrete screed is to be used for the protection

of water proofing for the horizontal areas. Vertical areas are

protected using approved Henkel Bituboard – 4 mm thick
