Document IntroductionThis document provides the prerequisites, guidelines, and instructions for establishing direct serial connections and dial-up modem connections between a service person’s laptop computer running Windows® 2000 or Windows XP® Operating Systems (OSs) and one of the following devices:

• Network Automation Engine (NAE)

• Network Integration Engine (NIE)

• Application and Data Server (ADS)

• Extended Application and Data Server (ADX)

The computer with a Web browser that you are connecting to an NAE or NIE can reside on an ADS or an ADX, but we recommend that the computer with a Web browser be a separate computer to achieve optimal performance from the ADS/ADX.

The information in this document is also useful when troubleshooting direct serial connections and dial-up modem connections in Metasys® system extended architecture solutions.

Related ConceptsYou must set the communications parameters before configuring for a connection. See the Communications Setup section in this document.

Direct serial connection, also called direct connect, is a connection made from a computer to another computer or some other device (such as an NAE or NIE) using a null modem cable connected from the serial port on the computer to a serial port on the other computer or device. See the Direct Serial Connection section in this document. Use a direct serial connection for troubleshooting, support, or to obtain information in any of the following circumstances:

• There is no Local Area Network (LAN) or cable modem to use for a connection with the NAE/NIE or ADS/ADX.

• There is a firewall blocking the user from connecting to the NAE/NIE or ADS/ADX.

In a dial-up connection, a computer uses a modem to call and connect to another computer or some other device (such as an NAE or NIE). You must connect the NAE or NIE to a phone line. An example application for a dial-up connection is monitoring a remote site with a computer. See the Dial-Up Connection section in this document. Use a dial-up connection for troubleshooting, support, or to obtain information in any of the following circumstances:

• There is no ADS/ADX.

• The ADS/ADX is located in another part of the building.

• You cannot connect from the Web browser.

Communications SetupThis document only covers the setup for the computer. You must also set up the other devices to which the computer connects. For performance reasons, the external modem Universal Serial Bus (USB) driver is not loaded as a default. For security reasons, Dial In capability is not enabled by default. To successfully configure a direct serial or dial-up connection, you must set up the communications for each device.

The following documents cover how to set up the NAE, NIE, or ADS:

• Establishing the NAE Network Parameters and Establishing the NAE Direct-Connect and Modem Parameters sections of the NAE Commissioning Guide (LIT-1201519)

• Configuring an ADS/ADX to Accept Dial-Up Connections section of the ADS Commissioning Guide (LIT-1201645).

For direct connect communications, you must use identical settings for each NAE or NIE.


For dial-up communications, you must also use identical settings for each NAE or NIE; however, you must either set up a different phone number for each connection when configuring the computer, or you can change the phone number each time you connect to a different NAE/NIE.

Windows 2000 Network and Dial-Up ConnectionsThe Network and Dial-Up Connections feature in the Windows™ 2000 Operating System (OS) allows remote access to other computers and devices. To access this folder, open the Control Panel and double-click the Network and Dial-Up Connections icon.

Windows XP Network Connections

The Network Connections feature in the Windows™ XP OS allows remote access to other computers and devices. To access this folder, open the Control Panel and double-click the Network Connections icon in Classic view or Network and Internet Connections icon in Category view.

Detailed Procedures

Direct Serial ConnectionFor the Metasys system extended architecture, connect a serial port on the computer to the Serial A RS-232 port on the NAE or NIE using a null modem cable. See the Wiring section of the NAE55/NIE55 Installation Instructions (Part No. 24-10051-0) for information on the physical connections.

Direct Serial Communications Checklist Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems

The setup of communications between a computer and an external device is a multistep process. Table 2 is a guide to verify that all steps required for successful communications using a direct serial connection are complete.

Adding a Null Modem Serial Cable

To add a null modem serial cable:

1. On the Windows Start menu, click Settings > Control Panel. The Control Panel screen appears.

2. Double-click the Phone And Modem Options icon. (In the Windows XP operating system, click the Printers and Other Hardware icon if you are using Category view.) The Phone And Modem Options screen appears.

Note: In a new Windows 2000 OS installation, a screen may appear before the Phone And Modems Options screen, prompting you to enter location information such as the local area code and the number to dial for an outside line. Complete the information on the screen and click OK. This information is stored as a new location in the Dialing Rules tab of the Phone And Modem Options screen. Continue to Step 3.

2 Make a new direct serial connection. See the Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 Operating Systems section or the Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows XP Operating Systems section in this document.

3. Click the Modems tab (Figure 1). If a null modem serial connection already exists, it appears here, listed as Communications cable between two computers. Click Cancel and continue to the Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 Operating Systems section or the Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows XP Operating Systems section. Otherwise, continue with Step 4.

4. Click Add. The Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 2).

5. Check the Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list check box. Click Next. The next Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 3).

6. In the Manufacturers list, check [Standard Modem Types]. In the Models list, check Communications cable between two computers. Click Next. The next Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 4).

7. Select the port where the null modem serial cable is connected. Click Next. The final Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 5).

8. Click Finish. The Phone And Modem Options screen reappears with the completed null modem serial cable installation (Figure 6).

9. If the communications cable is not automatically selected, select it. Click OK.

10. Close the Control Panel screen.

Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 Operating Systems

Perform the tasks in this section for the Windows 2000 Operating System (OS). Then follow the instructions in the Completing a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems section.

To make a new direct serial connection using Windows 2000 OS:


2. Double-click the Network and Dial-Up Connections icon. The Network and Dial-Up Connections screen appears.

3. Select Make New Connection. The Network Connection Wizard Welcome screen appears.

4. Click Next. The Type of Connection screen appears (Figure 7).

5. Select Connect directly to another computer. Click Next. The Host or Guest screen appears (Figure 8).

6. Click Guest. Click Next. The Select a Device screen appears (Figure 9).

7. Select Communications cable between two computers from the drop-down menu. Click Next. The Connection Availability screen appears (Figure 10).

8. Click the appropriate option. Click Next. The Finished screen appears (Figure 11).

9. Enter a name for the new connection entry. Click Finish. Continue with the Completing a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems section.

Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows XP Operating Systems

Perform the tasks in this section for the Windows XP operating system. Then follow the instructions in the Completing a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems section.

To make a new direct serial connection using Windows XP Operating Systems:


2. Double-click the Network Connections icon in Classic view or Network and Internet Connections icon in Category view.

3. Select create a new connection. The Network Connection Wizard Welcome screen appears. Click Next. The Network Connection Type screen appears (Figure 12).

4. Click Set up an advanced connection. Click Next. The Advanced Connection Options screen appears (Figure 13).

5. Click Connect directly to another computer. Click Next. The Host or Guest screen appears (Figure 14).

6. Click Guest. Click Next. The Connection Name screen appears (Figure 15).

7. Enter the name for the new connection. Click Next. The Select a Device screen appears (Figure 16).

8. Click Communications cable between two computers (COM1). Click Next. The Completing the New Connection Wizard screen appears with the name you entered for the new connection (Figure 17).

9. Click Finish. For some network configurations, a warning screen appears (Figure 18) after completing the Network Connection Wizard. Click OK .

Continue with the Completing a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems section.

Completing a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems

Complete the Network Connection Wizard before proceeding. See the Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 Operating Systems section or the Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows XP Operating Systems section.

To complete a new direct serial connection using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems:

1. When the Connect screen appears (Figure 19), click Properties.

The Connection Properties screen appears (Figure 20), indicating Direct Connection in the title bar.

2. On the General tab, click Configure. The Modem Configuration screen appears (Figure 21).

3. In the Maximum speed (bps) drop-down list box, click the speed of the NAE/NIE port to which the computer is connecting.

Note: Use Serial A port on the NAE/NIE for direct serial connections. The default port speed for Serial A port is 115,200 bits per second (bps).

4. In the Hardware features section, verify that the Enable hardware flow control check box is the only check box selected (Figure 21). Click OK. The Connection Properties screen returns (Figure 20).

5. Click the Networking tab (Figure 22).

6. In the Components checked are used by this connection list, clear all check boxes except the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box. Click OK. The Connect screen returns (Figure 19).

Note: The check boxes for some components may appear shaded. These check boxes are unavailable and cannot be cleared.

7. Click Cancel. The new direct serial connection is complete.

Dial-Up ConnectionFor the Metasys system extended architecture, you can use the following dial-up connections:

• External Modem - Connect a supported external Universal Serial Bus (USB) modem to the USB A port on the NAE/NIE or connect an external USB modem to the USB port on the ADS/ADX.

• Internal Modem - Connect a phone line to the Modem RJ-11 port on the NAE/NIE.

Refer to the Wiring section of the NAE55/NIE Installation Instructions (Part No. 24-10051-0) or NAE35/NAE45 Installation Instructions(Part No. 24-10050-6) for information on these connections.

Dial-Up (Modem) Communications Checklist

The setup of dial-up (modem) communications on a computer is a multistep process. Table 3 is a guide to verify that all steps required for successful communications using a dial-up connection are complete.

Adding a ModemIf available, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to add a modem. Otherwise, use the following instructions.

To add a modem:

1. On the Windows Start menu, click Settings > Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Phone And Modem Options icon. (In the Windows XP operating system, click the Printers and Other Hardware icon if you are using Category view.) The Phone And Modem Options screen appears.

Settings > Control Panel. Double-click the Phone And Modem Options icon. (In Windows XP OS, click the Printers and Other Hardware icon if you are using Category view.) If the modem you want to use is not on the Modems tab of the Phone And Modem Options screen, go to Adding a Modem in this document.

2 Make a new dial-up connection. Each site to which you want to establish a dial-up connection must have its own connection. See the Making a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 Operating Systems section or the Making a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows XP Operating Systems section in this document.

3 To continue by generating databases for NAE/NIEs, refer to the Configuring the NAE55 Technical Bulletin (LIT-1201519).

4 Complete the connection. See the Making a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows XP Operating Systems section in this document.

5 Establish the connection. See the Establishing the Connection section in this document.


3. Click the Modems tab (Figure 23).

Note: If a modem is already installed, it appears here. Click Cancel and continue to the Making a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 Operating Systems or the Making a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows XP Operating Systems section in this document. Otherwise, go to Step 4.

4. Click Add. The Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 24).

5. Choose one of the following options:

• To allow Windows OS to detect your modem automatically, click Next (this process may require a few minutes). Windows OS detects and lists your modem (Figure 25). Continue to Step 6.

• To select the modem manually, select the Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list check box. Click Next. The Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 26). Continue to Step 7.



6. In the Detected modems list (Figure 25), verify that the manufacturer and model are correct.

a. If the information is correct, click Next. The final Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 28). Continue to Step 9.

b. If the information is not correct or the modem is indicated as Unknown Modem, click Change. The Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 26). Continue to Step 7.

7. Select the Manufacturer and Model of your modem. Click OK.

8. Choose the appropriate option (Figure 27):

• If you allowed Windows OS to automatically detect your modem, the Install New Modem screen reappears with the corrected modem information. Click Next. The final Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 28). Continue to Step 9.

• If you selected the modem manually, the Install New Modem screen appears prompting you to select the port for the modem. Click the appropriate port and click Next. The final Install New Modem screen appears (Figure 28). Continue to Step 9.

9. Click Finish. The Phone And Modem Options screen reappears with the completed modem installation (Figure 29).

10. Click Properties. The Modem Properties screen appears (Figure 30).

11. In the Maximum Port Speed list, click the speed of the NAE/NIE port to which the computer is connecting.

Note: The default port speed for the NAE/NIE is 115,200 bps. Use this port speed for communication via a USB port. Use 57,600 bps as the maximum port speed if you are connecting to an NAE/NIE using a 56k modem. (Remember to configure the NAE/NIE to communicate at 57,600 bps for use with a 56k modem.)

12. Click OK. The Phone And Modem Options screen reappears (Figure 29).

13. Click OK. The Control Panel screen reappears.

14. Close the Control Panel screen.

Making a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 Operating SystemsPerform the tasks in this section. Then follow the instructions in the Completing a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems section.

To make a new dial-up connection using Windows 2000 Operating System:


2. Double-click the Network and Dial-Up Connections icon. The Network and Dial-Up Connections screen appears.

3. Select Make New Connection. The Network Connection Wizard Welcome screen appears. Click Next. The Type of Connection screen appears (Figure 31).

4. Click Dial-up to private network. Click Next. The Phone Number to Dial screen appears (Figure 32).

Note: If more than one dial-up device is installed on the computer, the Select a Device screen appears. Select the check box for the appropriate device and click Next. Continue to Step 5.

5. Type the phone number for the computer to dial. To have a computer determine how to dial from different locations, select the Use dialing rules check box. Click Next. The Connection Availability screen appears (Figure 33).

Note: The Dialing Rules feature allows you to create rules for dialing from different locations. Dialing Rules can include options such as dialing 9 for an outside line. To set up Dialing Rules, open the Phone And Modem Options screen as described in the procedure. Use the Dialing Rules tab to set rules for different locations.

6. Click the appropriate option. Click Next. The Finished screen appears with the name you entered for the new connection entry (Figure 34).

7. Click Finish. Continue with the Completing a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems section.

Making a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows XP Operating SystemsPerform the tasks in this section. Then follow the instructions in the Completing a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems section.

To make a new dial-up connection using Windows XP OS:


2. Double-click the Network Connections icon in Classic view or Network and Internet Connections icon in Category view, then click on the network Connections icon. The Network Connections screen appears.

3. Select create a new connection. The Network Connection Wizard Welcome screen appears.

4. Click Next. The Network Connection Type screen appears (Figure 35).

5. Click Connect to the network at my workplace. Click Next. The Network Connection screen appears (Figure 36).

6. Click Dial-up connection. Click Next. The Connection Name screen appears (Figure 37).

7. Enter a name for the new connection. Click Next. The Phone Number to Dial screen appears (Figure 38).

8. Enter a phone number (without hyphens) to dial for the new connection. Click Next. The Completing the New Connection Wizard screen appears (Figure 39).

9. Click Finish. For some network configurations, a warning screen appears (Figure 40) after completing the Network Connection Wizard. Click OK and continue to Completing a New Direct Serial Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems.

Continue with the Completing a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems section.

Completing a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating Systems

Complete the Network Connection Wizard before proceeding. See the Making a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows 2000 Operating Systems section or the Making a New Dial-Up Connection Using Windows XP Operating Systems section.

To complete the new dial-up connection:

1. When the Connect screen appears indicating the name of the new connection in the title bar (Figure 41), click Properties. The Connection Properties screen appears (Figure 42).

Note: Use the standard MetasysSysAgent username and its current password. The password is case sensitive. The default password for MetasysSysAgent is XMG3-Rel.1.

2. On the General tab, click Configure. The Modem Configuration screen appears (Figure 43).

3. In the Maximum speed list, select the speed of the NAE/NIE port to which the computer is connecting.

Note: The default port speed for the NAE/NIE is 115,200 bps. Use this port speed for communication via a USB port. Use 57,600 bps as the maximum port speed if you are connecting to an NAE/NIE using a 56k modem. (Remember to configure the NAE/NIE to communicate at 57,600 bps for use with a 56k modem.)

4. In the Hardware features section, clear the Enable modem compression check box (Figure 43). Click OK. The Connection Properties screen returns (Figure 42).

5. Click the Networking tab (Figure 44).

6. In the Components checked are used by this connection list, clear all check boxes except the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box. Click OK. The Connect screen returns (Figure 41).

Note: The check boxes for some components may appear shaded. These check boxes are unavailable and cannot be cleared.

7. Click OK. The new dial-up connection is complete.

Enabling Communication with Multiple Internet AddressesTo enable the computer to communicate with multiple Internet addresses (other than the Metasys device):


2. Double-click the Network And Dial-Up Connections icon. The Network And Dial-Up Connections screen appears (see Figure 45).

3. Double-click the modem used. The Connect Modem screen appears.

4. Select Properties. The Modem Properties screen appears (see Figure 46).

5. On the Networking tab, click Properties (Figure 47). The Internet Protocol TCP/IP Properties screen appears (Figure 48).

6. Click the Advanced button. (See Figure 48.) The Advanced TCP/IP Properties screen appears. (See Figure 49.)

7. Clear the Use default gateway on remote network box (see Figure 49).

8. Click OK.

Establishing the Connection

If you are using a dial-up connection, check that the NAE/NIE is set for dial-up connections before you establish the connection. Refer to the NAE Commissioning Guide (LIT-1201519) or the NAE85/NIE85 Commissioning Guide (LIT-12011044) for details.

To establish the connection:

1. Change the NAE/NIE to enable and allow incoming connections on the modem used for the dial-up connection.

2. Reboot the NAE/NIE to load the USB drivers if the connection uses an external modem.

3. Double-click the icon on the desktop for the connection you created. If you did not create an icon on the desktop, access the icon in the Network and Dial-Up Connections (Windows 2000 OS) folder or the Network Connections (Windows XP OS) folder.

Use the following default user names and passwords to access the Metasys system:

Standard Access:

username: MetasysSysAgent

password: XMG3-Rel.1

Basic Access:

username: BasicSysAgent

password: XMG3-Bas1c

Note: The passwords are case sensitive.

Note: The Johnson Controls disclaimer statement appears the first time you log in.

Note: The Basic Access password is disabled by default and must be enabled before you use it to access the system.

IMPORTANT: The download process can take up to 1.5 hours. Use the Metasys Remote Access utility to reduce the time required for downloading. Refer to the Metasys System Extended Architecture Remote Access Installation Instructions (LIT-1201691) for more information.


4. Double-click the icon on the desktop for the connection you created and select Status (Figure 50).

If you did not create an icon on the desktop, browse to and double-click the icon in the Network and Dial-Up Connections (Windows 2000 OS) folder or the Network Connections (Windows XP OS) folder.

5. The Dialup to NAE Status dialog box appears (Figure 51).

6. On the Details tab, note the address in the Server IP address field (Figure 52).

7. Click Close.

8. Log on to the user interface of the NAE/NIE from your Web browser using the URL:

http://[insert IP address here]/Metasys/

Replace [insert IP address here] with the IP address found in Step 5.

Note: The dial-up connection does not automatically disconnect when you exit Metasys software. Close the connection with the disconnect command. See Figure 50.
