Purpose

Thorburn's annular corrugated metal hose assemblies are made upof three major parts: metal hose, overbraid and end fittings. Assembliesachieve several objectives in pipework design: absorb vibration, supress rigid pipe transmitted noise, accommodate reciprocatingand flexing movement and adjust or correct for minor misalignment.

Custom Designs

Thorburn is geared to provide end-user designed hose assemblies. Youspecify the operating conditions andwe will produce a hose. The hosemay be exceptionally flexible or youmay need several hoses encapsu-lated in outer hose: a jacketed hosefor heat exchange; an armoured hose;a hose to carry sensitive cables; anarticulated robotic cover; an insulatedhose; a colour coded hose. Our "can-do" design specialists are only a phonecall away.

CHARACTERISTICS

Hose

Thorburn's stainless steel annular cor-rugated hose body provides the flex-ible and pressure tight core of the as-sembly. Thorburn's manufactured annularcorrugated hose tends to be more flexible andlower stressed than a helical product. The pitch of thehose can be varied to achieve performance requirements inboth flexibility and pressure rating.

End Fittings

This is the means by which the custom-designed assembly is at-tached into the pipework system.

Braid

When pressure is introduced into corrugated hose, it tends to openaxially. The pressure acts upon each corrugation at the rate of theeffective diameter of the corrugation, multiplied by the line pressure. The job of Thorburn's tight weave braid is to prevent elongation.Fitting the braid to the corrugated tube also increases the hoop

Braided hoses accept lateralmotion only

strength, stabilizes movement and offers a form of abrasion protection. The core hose, a braid collar and the tight weavebraid are welded together to give the "live length" of assembly. Braid is made of stainless steel, Monel or bronze wire, wovenin such a way that line pressure produces braid tension which is dissipated into inward radial pressure. Thorburn's multiplebraided assemblies accommodate higher pressures. As the braid is stretched in an operating assembly, it will not acceptaxial motion.

Thorburn's standard metal hose core is corrugated intoa close pitch annular profile. These annular corrugationspermit the hose to be bent or isolate lateral deflectionwhile remaining liquid and gas tight.

Thorburn's annular corrugations permit the hose assem-bly to absorb its thermal activated extension and com-pression movements.

Helical corrugations tend to be less flexible and yieldhigher stress under flexural movement. In other words1) helical assembly takes more force to bend and re-quires longer lengths to make a bend; 2) helical assem-bly life is more adversely affected by flexure movementresulting in a shorter life.

Helical corrugations have a tendency to twist whensubjected to extension and compression movement. Inother words, if your flexible hose component is sub-jected to a change in temperature, the hose could failprematurally.

Why Buy Thorburn Annular formed Corrugated Metal Hose Assemblies

Thorburn's standard annular flexible core starts its lifeas a coil of stainless steel strip which is mechanicallyformed into a tube and then longitudinally butt welded.Considerable care is taken to ensure that the strength ofthe butt weld is greater than that of the parent material. This rigid tube is then transferred to the corrugating ma-chine where the corrugations are formed. After the tubehas been corrugated, it is pressure tested to ensure thatthere are no leaks.

Thorburn's "Tight weave" braid design is carefully calcu-lated to ensure that the number of wire gauge and theangle of lay give optimum performance. After the attach-ment of the end fittings, the hose is pressure tested to1-1/2 times the working or design pressure and test cer-tificates can be supplied if required.

Application

Thorburn’s high pressure NS99Z metallic high pressure hoseassemblies were specifically designed to transfer heavy wa-ter in a fuel handling system found in a CANDU 6 nuclearpower generating station. This hose can be manufactured tomeet the design requirements of ASME Section III and CSAN285.0 components in CANDU nuclear power plants. An-other ideal application is to transfer gaseous hydrogen toand from the bulk transport truck to the customer facility.

Minimum Live Length

Determine the centerline bend radius required for yourapplication. Under the column headed "Centerline bendradius in inches", find your radius and read horizon-tally to the desired degree of bend (45o, 90o or 180o).The number in that column will be the minimum livelength required to make that degree of bend along thedesired centerline radius.

Note: Add fitting length dimension "A" plus the mini-mum live length to calculate OAL.

Metal HoseTechnical Data

A piping system which utilizes Thorburn flexible metal hose assemblies to absorb pipe movement must beproperly anchored and guided to assure correct functionning and maximum service life of the metal hose. Thebasic principles to be observed are:

1) The direction of pipe motion must be perpendicular to the center line (axis) of the hose.

2) The pipe must be anchored at each change of direction where a flexible metal hose is employed to preventtorsional stress.

Typical examples of correct and incorrect guiding are shown below.

Shock PressureWhen pulsating, surge or shock pressures exist, these havea marked effect on the service life of metal hoses. If thissituation is encountered, the peak pressure must not exceed50% of the maximum working pressure.

Flow VelocityHigh velocities in corrugated hose should be avoided as thecorrugations could be forced into resonant vibrations result-ing in premature fatigue failure. Where the flow velocityexceeds 100 ft/sec for gas or 50 ft/sec for liquid in unbraidedhose and 150 ft/sec for gas or 75 ft/sec for liquid in braidedhose, an interlock hose should be used as a liner. When thehose is installed in a bent condition, these flow values shouldbe reduced by 50% for a 90o bend, 25% for a 45o bend andso on, proportionally to the angle of bend. Where velocityexceeds the above values, the next lager size of hose withliner should be used.

Pressure LossAs a rough estimate, it can be assumed that the pressureloss in corrugated hoses is 100% higher than in new weldedsteel pipes, and in stripwound hoses it is 20% higher. Thismeans that in the case of corrugated hoses an increase indiameter of 15% and in the case of stripwound hoses of only4% is sufficient to reduce the pressure loss to the value ofthe pressure loss in steel pipes. For more accurate calcula-tions, consult Thorburn engineering with application details.

A single interlocking strip of metal is spirally wound toform a durable, standard bore flexible hose. Depend-ing upon the material used, packing, and strip thick-ness, a standard bore metal hose can operate in avariety of temperatures ranging from -100oF to +1200oF.Standard bore metal hose can be manufactured fromvarious grades of most stainless steel alloys, aluminum, bronze, brass, aluminized, galvanized and tin plate.

APPLICATIONS

■ Engine exhaust ■ Dust collecting■ Auto heating tubing ■ Ventilation ducts ■ Hot air ducting■ Conveying grain or sawdust ■ Protective casing ■ Fume extracting

For additional leak proofing, a continuous strand isinserted into the groove of the Thorburn "LS" serieshose during manufacturing. The strand is sealed in-side the hose, and will not contaminate the productduring transference.

Thorburn's "LS" series is an "S" lock section hose thatis primarily designed for conveying air, exhaust anddry bulk products. Thorburn's "LS" series hose is avail-able packed or unpacked.

■ The compensator connects flexible metal hose to fittings, rubber hose, pipe, etc. without cementing orwelding. This keeps the compensator and fitting usable if the metal hose fails. Welding in most cases willlocally "burn out" the metal hose packing and cause air leaks.

■ The compensator absorbs vibration and stress at the solid connection. This protects the flexible hose frompremature failure caused by over stressing.

■ The compensator can be used for "on-sight" repairs in remote operations where welding and cementing arenot feasable. Installs in 5 to 15 minutes with just a screw driver if screw type band clamps are used to mountthe compensator.

■ Temperature range -65o to 285oF.■ Used indoors or outdoors.

Teflon Lined Hose

■ Chemical Inertness: Teflon won't decompose or break down in the mostcorrosive environments and it is inert to practically all commercial chemicals, acids, alcohols, coolants, elastomers, petroleum compounds, solvents, vinyls, synthetic lubricants and hydraulic fluids.

■ Temperature Resistant: Operating range of -100oF to 500oF means hosestays flexible at low temperatures, strong at high temperatures.

■ Flex and Shock Resistance: Thorburn T-Flex is not affected by continu-ous flexing, vibration or impulse –withstands alternating cold and heatcycling.

■ Low Friction: Liquids maintain a steady flowwithout clogging. Constant low pressure drop meansdeposits can't accumulate on inside walls.

■ Moisture Resistant: Ideal for pneumatic sys-tems requiring low dew point. No possibility of satu-

ration or leakage.

■ Non-Contaminating: Will not contaminate thematerial, fluid or gas conducted –Teflon is FDA ap-

proved for food products, pharmaceuticals, etc.

■ Steam Compatibility: Absorbs no moisture hot or cold–rated for steam to 250 psi (400oF)– has low volumetric

expansion characteristics, is easy to clean and sterilize.

■ Light Weight: Easier to move, handle, install thanrubber hose with a comparable burst pressure

rating. Ideal as pigtail in gas handling and pneu-matic systems where dew point must be low.

■ Resists Deterioration: Impervious to weatherand can be stored for long periods without aging. Will not age during service.

■ Unlimited Life: Unmeasurable life expectancy when appliedwithin its temperature and pressure ratings. Will not tear-up, eat-out,

burn-up or wear-out.

■ Non-Adhesive: Handles substances such as adhesives, asphalt, dyes, grease, glue, latex, lacquers and paints. No carbon build up when used as a

compressor discharge line.

■ Non-Conductive: Excellent dielectric properties. Ideal hose core for applicationsrequiring electrical isolation.

"Sure-Seal"-swaged end fittingconnection

Tefloninnercore

Stainless steelwire braid

Thorburn's exclusive swaged or crimp "Sure Seal" cou-pling attachment offers the industry the safest and mostreliable hose to coupling attachment method.

Thorburn's exclusive "Sure Seal" coupling at-tachment method is based upon extensive de-velopment engineering. The Teflon innercoreand over braid are firmly locked between thefitting collar and insert for a permanent, leak-proof assembly. The positive braid lock as-sures that strain is absorbed by the braid, notthe Teflon hose.

Materials The "sure seal" couplings are avail-able in stainless steel, brass, or a combinationof brass and carbon steel. The wetted surfacesof stainless steel fittings are type 303, otherparts are type 304, unless specified (othermaterials available upon request).

Teflon Lined Hose

The drawback found in using large diameter smooth tubeTeflon lined stainless steel braided hose assemblies wasits inability to stand up to rugged handling. These tradi-tional assemblies would tend to kink when bent into tightradii and the braid would tend to separate during handling, exposing the operator to potentail dangerous failure.

To address this problem, Thorburn developed its TR40which combines the traditional technology of a rubber chemi-cal pressure hose with the superior properties of teflon. The smooth teflon lined tube is reinforced with a combina-tion of high tensile calendared synthetic fabric braid andhelical wires which are then shielded with a tough abrasivechemical resistant cover. The hose is then vulcanized andbonded into an integral unit. The end result provides forgreater handling, flexibility and abrasion resistancy.

TR40... the ultimate refinement insmooth bore technology

Thorburn TR40 assemblies fitting to end joints are provided through a mighty crimp processwhich features a smooth low profile compression crimp fitting. The teflon innercore, braidreinforcements and outer cover are locked into tthe insert serrations and ferrule grooves, assuring 360° blow-off proof assemblies.

■ Ideal dielectric medium pressureSuperstructure Potroom hose

Thorburn's TP31 hose with an abrasive resistant polyesterbraid reinforcement instead of wire braid is non-metallicthroughout, and flame-resistant (will not sustain combus-tion). These characteristics make it appropriate for manyuses requiring sound attenuation, electrical insulation orisolation, or resistance to high frequency radiation (whichmay cause external overheating and eventual failure ofmetal-braided hose). TP31 has a 15% carbon black addedto the Teflon to dissipate electrical static charge. Typicalapplications include coolant lines, fuel and oil hose, instru-ment lines and low pressure industrial gas compressed airsystems.

Thorburn's TP32 hose with polyester braid is similar toTP31, except that the Teflon innercore is white and doesnot possess the static dissipation characteristics of the car-bon black innercore. Typical applications: Potroom, com-pressed air service piping. Economical alternative to ThorburnTKP30 Potroom hose.

Thorburn's TN33 hose is reinforced with a Dupont Nomexbraid and has a 15% carbon black added to the Tefloninnercore to dissipate electrical static charge.

Thorburn's TN34 hose is reinforced with Dupont Nomexbraid and is similar in construction to TN33, except for theTeflon innercore which is white.

USE OF CHART:

Before selecting a TFE hose for a particular steampiping system, determine the maximum operatingtemperature of the system. Locate that temperatureon the y-axis of the chart and draw a line parallelto the x-axis until it intersects the curve. Beneaththe intersection locate on the x-axis the workingsteam pressure of the system. Compare this valueto the recommended steam working pressuresshown in the TF46 hose data above.

Caution: Thorburn T46 TFE hose is notrecommended for steam piping applicationswhere steam pressures exceed 200 PSIG.

1. Cut hose to required lengthafter wrapping area to be cut witha double layer of masking tape;this is to prevent braid flare andattendant assembly difficulties.Tape is to remain in place untilIMMEDIATELY before sl idingsockets onto hose. CAUTION —use a sharp TFE Hose cut-offblade in a Stratoflex approvedHose Cut-off machine only. Trimloose wires and clean hose bore.Discard hose if inner tube hasbeen kinked or collapsed or isnot cut square within ±6°. Re-move tape and slide sockets ontohose. Put the nipple in a vise andpush the hose onto the nipple.Rotate hose to size the tube andflare the braid. Remove hose fromnipple.

2. Push the insert onto the hosebetween the inner tube and the braid.Completely bottom the hose in the in-sert by pushing against a flat surface.

3. Push the insert and hose onto thenipple until the insert bottoms againstthe nipple chamfer. Lubricate the nip-ple and socket threads. Push the socketforward and start the threads by hand.

4. Tighten the nipple hex with theproper wrench until there is a 1/32"maximum gap beween the nippleand socket hexes. To disassemble.reverse the procedure.*

*NOTE: During attachment of the fittingonto the hose, the insert collapses in-wardly compressing the TFE inner tube. All components other than the insert areconsidered reattachable unless visiblydamaged.

5. Clean the hose assembly usingvarsol or other Thorburn approvedfluid. Blow the hose bore dry usingfiltered air.

6. Proof test the hose assembly attwice the recommended operatingpressure for 30 seconds minimum,5 minutes maximum.

Thermal InsulationProtection

THOR-SIL cloth is a flexible refractory textile materialwith excellent insulation characteristics for high-temperature applications.

THOR-SIL textiles are continuous filament, amorphoussilica products, with the thermal performance of arefractory material. The fiber does not melt or vaporizeuntil temperatures exceed 3100oF (1704oC).THOR-SIL textile cloth will operate continuously attemperatures to 1800oF (982oC) with little or no changein properties. When temperatures are elevated beyond1800oF (982oC), some embrittlement occurs. However,THOR-SIL cloth continues to provide thermal protectionto temperatures of 3100oF (1704oC).

Refractory silica in textile form insulation

THOR-SIL insulation withstands moltensteel at 2800oF

APPLICATIONS

■ Furnace curtains and welding protection cloth

■ Personnel shields

■ Pre-heat and weld stress retreiving thermal blankets

■ Many other applications where heat is a destroyer

THOR-SIL wide woven tapes are proven for hose orpipe wrap and stress relieving applications. They areused to insulate hydraulic lines, coolant hoses andmotor leads and can be used in any application wherethermal insulation, energy savings, safety and electri-cal nonconductivity are important. THOR-SIL also pro-tects machinery from extreme radiant heat and moltenmetal splash, and it protects parts from contamination, marking and damage during high-temperature processingas well.

Description

Thorburn's MTS4 series is an all purpose lightweight all metal highpressure pipe/hose vacuum coupling designed for leakproof operationas it cycles through a wide range of pressures and temperatures, typical of autoclave environments. The design offers a non restrictiveflow with no variation in pipe diameter. The reusable sealing compo-nents are made of different metals having their own unique hardnessand thermal properties, so as to further enhance the seal as tempera-ture changes are encountered. The safety ring ensures that the sealis broken before disconnection, safely venting any residual pressure.

Thorburn's MTS4DS series expands upon the MTS4 concept byoffering the composite industry "double end" dead tight shut-off whenuncoupling.

■ Precision machined parts. Ends taper reamed before thread-ing.

■ Resistance to vibration. Seals will not loosen, even underextreme vibration or pressure surges.

■ No maintenance needed because once the seal is made itnever requires retightening.

■ Saves money and weight by eliminating unnecessary nipples, brushings, couplings and inserts when initially designed intothe system.

■ Flat faced construction allows for slipping the component inand out without disturbing the surrounding tube or pipe sec-tions.

Design Standards

Unions are designed to comply with current in-dustry standards for pressure piping. These stand-ards include ANSI B 31.1 "Power Piping", ANSI B16.11 "Forged Steel Fittings Socket Welded andThreaded", and ASME "Boiler and Pressure Ves-sel Code".

Thorburn's flexible piping assemblies areserving a great variety of applications acrossindustry –from bakery ovens to basic oxy-gen furnaces– where unrestricted flow ofgas or fluids is critical, where the workingenvironment is exposed to heat, vibration, tight bending and other problems that can-not be solved adequately or safely by all-metal hose, swivel joints or plain unarmouredhose.

Custom hose construction for the steelmaking industry

Depending on the type of service, the innerhose is specially designed for the material tobe handled: steam, air, chemical, oxygen, hy-draulic fluid, and other substances. These in-ner hoses are specially made to be armouredin Thorburn's metal protective sheath.

The tube of the hose is specially compoundedto resist chemical action of the material beinghandled.

The carcass, which is the strength member ofthe hose, can be textile or wire braid wire, spiral wire or cable.

Layers of insulation between the protectivearmour and the hose member protects theentire assembly from external heat. Additionallayers provide further protection and differenttypes of insulation material are available tomeet special needs.

Thorburn's metal protective armour is galva-nized, stainless steel, aluminum, or bronze, asspecified. It offers resistance to external abusegreater than all-metal hose, yet it remainsextremely flexible and resists kinking or col-lapse in tight loops, knots or bends.

To solve your worst, most demanding hose installation,Thorburn's flexible piping division will provide a unique solution to highlyhazardous, costly problems that none of your other suppliers havethought about.

Chlorine Market Digest

The chemical element, chlorine, has many organic and inorganicderivations, which in turn have literally hundreds of end-uses:polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, refrigerants, solvents, silicones, food and drug additives and processing, perfumes, missiles, metalprocessing –the list is endless.

In its "as is" state, chlorine is widely used in the pulp and paperindustry for bleaching paper, as well as in water purification.

Chlorine is one of the most difficult and hazardous chemicals tohandle. At ordinary temperatures chlorine is a gas with a green-ish-yellow color and a sharp irritating odor. When the gas iscooled at atmospheric pressure, it liquifies at about -30oF, forminga clear amber liquid.

Liquid and gaseous chlorine can be either "dry" (sometimes calledanhydrous) or "wet" (sometimes called moist). Dry chlorine doesnot contain any water. Wet chlorine, however, does contain somewater and it is this combination of chlorine and water which willform hydrochloric and hypochlorous acids which are extremelycorrosive to all common metals such as Monel, stainless steel, bronze and steel.

Typically, the manufactured chlorine is loaded into railroad tankcars and highway tank trucks at approximately -18oC (0oF) atabout 100 psi. Unloading at their end users at about the sameconditions.

Each loading station usually employs from 1 to 3 loading hoses, and one "sniffer" hose (to bleed off any vaporized chlorine), withlengths varying from 6' to 12'. The most common length is 8'.

A common derivative of chlorine, anhydrous hydrochloric acid(HCL), also poses a tough transfer problem. Loading is typicallydone with one loading hose and one sniffer hose, with the serviceconditions at about -57oC (-70oF) at 70 to 135 psi.

Composite and Laminating Industry Digest

In the composite and laminating industry, "vacuum bag-ging" refers to a process which covers or surrounds alaminate with a flexible, sealed membrane (vacuum bag).Vacuum bagging produces exceptionally strong, lightweightparts with little, if any, air entrapment.

Through ports installed in the bag, the air is removed fromaround the laminate. This is accomplished with a vacuumpump attached to vacuum hoses which are connected tothe ports via quick-disconnects. With the air removed, at-mospheric pressure forces the bag down tight against thelaminate, similar to a vacuum-packed food item.

For laminates cured at room temperature, this may be theextent of the vacuum bagging process. Because manylaminates are manufactured using heat-activated (thermo-set) or heat-formed (thermoplastic) resins, the vacuum-bagged articles are cured in ovens or, when more pressureis required, they are cured in autoclaves and mechanicalpresses.

An autoclave, simply described, is a pressure vessel withan access door, in which any of an infinite number ofvariable non-ambient conditions including dry heat, gase-ous pressure and/or vacuum can be brought to bear, indi-vidually or in combination, on a material to be treated in thevessel to cause physical and chemical changes in thematerial. Autoclaves are typically used for vulcanizing rub-ber products, curing plastics, and bonding metal, glass, graphite, or other dissimilar materials into composites.

Thorburn's autoclave hose assembly features:

■ Rapid hook-up to product material tray/dolly

■ Hold internal full vacuum (29" Hg)

■ Withstand external positive pressure of 15 - 500 psi

■ Chamber temperature 400oF to 800oF or in cryogenicto -300oF

■ Not absorb moisture from adhesive vapour fumes

■ Flexible yet resist kinking when folded back alongchamber sides when not in use

■ Leak proof to assure finished product quality

Market IntroductionThe compressed gas industry represents one of the largest and mostimportant markets in the world today. These gases are essential tothe success of many industries, including welding/cutting, metal pro-duction and fabrication, electrical and electronics, lighting, laser products, aerospace, underwater diving, petroleum recovery, food and bever-age refrigeration and the medical profession just to name a few.

Their manufacture, handling, transport, storage, transfer and packag-ing is of prime importance for the many markets and diverse applica-tions they serve. Many of these compressed gases initially producedat an air-separation plant, are handled, stored and transported as coldliquids/cryogenic fluids– they are cooled down to liquid form andstored in special insulated tanks thatr keep them below their boilingpoints. Many of these cold liquids/cryogenic fluids, upon further trans-port are transfered into sub-station “holding tanks,” and convertedinto a gaseous (non-liquefied) state and packed into small cylindersfor final end-use applications. These cylinders are of many differentsizes and styles, with various highly-controlled pressure ratings.

Thorburn’s ExperienceThorburn’s contribution to this industry has been achieved largely throughits custom metallic, teflon lined hose assemblies, CGA adapters and fittingassemblies. Thorburn’s products have been able to provide reliable timelysolutions at the air separation production plants for the loading of bulk liquidcryogenic and non-cryogenic compressed gases into cargo trucks and rail/tank cars for transport to other storage facilities and/or users. Off-loading oftheir vehicles is also being readily handled by Thorburn’s metalic and teflonlined hose assemblies which are normally carried on the vehicle.

Whether the compressed gas is oxygen for steel making nitrous oxide asanesthesia for the medical profession, carbon dioxide for providing the“pop’ in soft drinks, or liquid fuel propellants for the NASA rocket launches,Thorburn metal and teflon hose assemblies are continuing to make majorcontributions in the handling of the hazardous yet essential compressedgases.

➂ At what temperature do you wish the hose to operate?

➂ What is the minimum ambient temperature expected?■ The difference between the operating temperature and the minimum ambient temperature is

what the hose must be designed to produce.

■ This is achieved by a combination of power (watts per foot) and thermal insulation.

■ The thicker the thermal insulation, the less watts per foot required.

■ If the amount of power available is limited, you must have more thermal insulation.

■ If you need a hose with a small finished O.D., you must use more power.

➂ At what voltage would you prefer to operate the hose?

➂ What length would you like the hose to be?■ Lengths up to 1000 feet are available, with one voltage input.

➂ How do you plan to control the hose temperature?■ For continuous operation, we recommend solid state control.

■ For periodic operation, electro-mechanical control is acceptable.

➂ What pressure rating do you need at your expectedoperating temperature?
