METAL FORGEINDUCTIONINDUCTION

WITH DALLAS

metal forgeThis is the furnace to heat the metal to be manipulated. the

danger elements of this station are the heat, use of fire and gas.

key things to make sure are addressed are the gas flow, air

flow and electrics and extraction of fumes.

twisting the metal

metal forging is a very physical discipline as well as time

sensitive of material. more then just a cliche’ you must hit the iron when it is hot or your

results will be unfavourable.

physics of the process

you will find you will be working in various planes of play. in this

process not only was it necessary to twist the metal but

also pull in a synchronous manner. if the metal did bend in

a manor not intended corrections must be made

quickly.

protective gearthe use of the protective gear is

essential in the metal forging process. even with the

protective gear the heat did transfer through the gloves and

the potential to burning ones skin was a constant risk which

needed to be monitored.

final piece. the induction process was

focused around producing a metal welsh love spoon.

the ladle being the first time working with

forming metal with a hammer there were some mistakes made. one was the distortion of the rim of the ladle. this was to be corrected on the metal grinder at a later time. Induction has

been given to achieve this though.

the shapeI was actually quite chuffed over the final bit. mine was the best.

I believe this was due to not being afraid of hitting the metal with a force that was needed.

final outcome of induction

• This induction has brought a better understanding of the various kinetic elements needed to form metal. the process gave a good insight to what may happen within a kiln by observing the fluidity of the metal when heated. It was hypothesised as being similar to what happens to glazes when heated.

further exploration and uses of metal forging

• in further projects there is a desire to work larger and utilising ceramic as adornment or as embellishments. there will need to be a structure which will also lend an aesthetic quality to the final instilation.

• in a pure utilitarian aspect, it was concidered to combined the metal forging with the ceramic to create a entry gate to a front drive of ones home.
