"ONIX is the international standard forcommunication information aboutbooks and was developed with the book industry needs in mind.Although other bibliographicstandards exist, there really isn’tanother standard for the industrythat compares to ONIX in its ability tomeet descriptive andbusiness metadata needs forpublishing.

"When your products are digital (andequally, when your physical books aresold online), metadata is sometimesthe only marketing tool youhave. Readers don’t discover yourbook – they discover informationabout your book. The richer theinformation you can provide to aprospective purchaser, the more likelythey are to find the exact book theyneed.

The nature of 21st century businessand the supporting metadata (forbooks and most every other product)is dynamic. Metadata growsand changes throughout the life ofthe book – from acquisition throughpublication and beyond, continuing to draw readers for aslong as the book is sold.

"Your metadata managementprocesses have a life cycle: typicallyyou want to begin sending outyour product metadata four to sixmonths prior to publication of yourbook. But that processdoes not end when the book ispublished. However timely, accurateand comprehensive your data iswhen you send it out to your businesspartners, it’s not ‘finished’. Themetadata is dynamic.
