Messing Around With Mesos:A DCOS Primer – Part 2

By: Eric Wright

Meanwhile, In A Previous ArticleI wrote an article taking a look at Mesos and the idea of the Mesosphere DCOS.

More options are coming to the data center with Mesos and the Mesosphere offering.

Companies are revisiting their IT strategies and opportunities are ripe for the picking.

An Offer You Can’t (Or Can) Refuse

To see available CPU and memory, the resources inside a Mesos cluster are advertised to the master.

Once the slave nodes report:

An allocation policy is invoked to allow the framework schedulers to allocate application resources into the environment.

Dive Deeper If You’d LikeHere’s a research paper on Dominant Resource Fairness, which is at the heart of the Mesos resource allocation model.

If research isn’t your thing, this blog post from Kenneth Hui provides a great real life scenario.

It’s exciting to see this algorithm in play as Mesos gains traction!

In fact, we may see application providers and integrators building their own customer allocators soon.

Trying Out DCOS On AmazonWith the recent GA launch of the DCOS, you can try the environment easily on AWS.

It’s free from the Mesosphere side, but it will incur charges on AWS.

Let’s try it out!

5

Let’s Use This Process.

I’ve created my AWS keypair which will be attached to the new cluster.

Now, just walk through the wizard.

Continuing On…

7

Go through the setup process and select the parameters for our DCOS environment.

Since I took a run at a 3-node master setup, I’ll put some slave nodes in to mimic building out a proper cluster size.

Now, Follow Along In Your CloudFormation Console

The process is simple and powerful. You can see why organizations want to build and deploy applications on it.

The DCOS process adds a new level of abstractions which could be the trigger for people to look at the Mesosphere architecture.

Let’s check our status!

With The Creation Process Completed….

9

Just go to the public URL provided in the output and voila: The Master Console.

Seriously, It’s That Easy

10

Mesos (the open source platform) and Mesosphere (the commercial product) are sometimes used interchangeably.

It’s tricky, because Mesos is made easy by the Mesosphere management tools.

As an enterprise consumer who wants DCOS, it’s good to learn about whether taking a commercial product built on open source is the right approach.

Me? I lean towards yes.
