Pastor Phil’s Message

Why do people do church? I don’t think it is for the music. This is in no way intended to slight our talented musicians or our dedicated singers or choir. It’s just that if any of us want to listen to music, any kind of music, we all have access to the greatest choirs, orchestras, organists, soloists, in history at our fingertips. I don’t think it is for the preaching. I try to be relevant, thought provoking and insightful, but again, I’m well aware that all of you have through, books, TV and the internet access to the greatest preachers in the world. I don’t think it is for the praying. We all understand that God is present and hears our voic-es and our hearts everywhere we are. So, why do so many still feel a desire to leave where they are and drive sometimes consider-able distances to come to church? Why during this pandemic do we still gather virtually? The only thing that makes any sense to me is that there is something special in be-ing together. Somehow in togetherness, Christ, God, truth, is revealed. It is one of the few non-paradoxical truths - the only way to experience togetherness is to be together - even if the only way to be together is through our screens. Christian spirituality is not a solitary journey into the self, nor is it just a personal relationship with God. Christian spirituality has always been best understood as a social/covenantal rela-tionship with others. God is experienced through membership in what the Apostle Paul calls “the body of Christ.” He tells us straight up that “the body has many members.” We can’t experience the body in aloneness. It is in togetherness that the risen Christ is revealed and experienced. It is in togetherness that we experience the grace of connectedness. In Christ, life is not to be a game of solitaire, rather is to be a joy filled journey into FAMILY! During this time of separateness and distancing, lets do all we can to hold each other close and to claim togetherness. Blessings and Peace, Pastor Phil

Search Committee The search committee contin-ues to interview applicants for a new Pastor. We are currently in a holding pattern until we can meet our favorites face to face. As soon as people are able to travel safely, we will be on hold. Positives are we have four candidates in the queue, all of which are very qualified. Nancy Tschannen, Chairperson

Worship Committee A special thank you to Pastor Phil, Becky and Ruth for making our worship experience each Sunday so gratifying and spiritual. It is awesome to have live music and worship each week as we go through these unprecedent-ed times. Nancy Tschannen, Chairperson

MYLO

We held our April 28th meeting via Zoom.

Six members were present. We welcomed

guest, Nancy Becker. We want to thank

everyone that attended our Soup and Salad

Lunch on March 1st. Money raised will be

used for a future project. We were asked

by Pastor Phil if we could sew up some

masks to have at church, adult and kid size.

Several of us have been busy making them.

They will be available to anyone needing a

mask and for use by the congregation for

worship services once the church is able to

open again. Our May 26th meeting will also

be on Zoom.

Millburn Church is a ruined former church in Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. It was built in 1845 for the Free Church of Scotland in the Gothic style. It is a category A listed building, and is on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland. The architect is thought to have been John Thom-as Rochead, though it has also been attributed to George Meikle Kemp, architect of the Scott Monument. The church was disused by 1985, when it was threatened with demoli-tion. It remained empty despite several plans for restora-tion, and the roof collapsed in the late 1990s. In 2006 a storm blew down the steeple of the building, and in 2009 a further application to demolish the building was lodged. The application was opposed locally, and was withdrawn in 2011. Two of Robert Burns' nieces are buried in the kirkyard.

Did you know…

In the Great Quiet of God

In the great quiet of God, my troubles are but pebbles on the road,

My joys are like the everlasting hills. So it is when I step through the gate of prayer

from time into eternity. When I am in the consciousness of God,

my brothers and sisters are not far-off and forgotten, but close and strangely dear.

They shine, as if a light were glowing within them. Even those who frown on me

and love me not seem part of the great scheme of God.

-Walter Rauschenbush, 20th-century pioneer of

Social Gospel movement

Come and find the quiet center in the crowded life we lead,

Find the room for hope to enter, Find the frame where we are freed;

Clear the chaos and the clutter, clear our eyes that we may see

All the tings that really matter; Be at peace and simply be.
