the happy gardener Article Source: Becca MassatThe Growing Place

It’s February and we’re itching to get in the garden. But, while we patiently wait for spring to getoutside, we can get our fix with terrariums and dish

gardens. They give us the chance to bring nature indoorson a small scale.

CHOOSING YOUR CONTAINER

You can create gardens in almost any kind of container. Forenclosed terrariums, we recommend using a glass vesselthat does not have drainage. It can be anything from astandard enclosed terrarium, a lantern or even a mason jarfor an extra small terrarium. Be creative! Almost any glassvessel can become a terrarium as long as it isbig enough to support the plants.

For open containers such as dishes orpots, it is easier if it does have a drainagehole. If it doesn’t, you will have to bevery careful not to over-water it. A glasscloche can be placed over an opencontainer to create a terrarium look.

CHOOSING YOUR PLANTS

When considering plants forterrariums and dish gardens, makesure you select the right plants. Forthe humid environment of a terrariumferns and miniature house plants areappropriate because they don’t need a lot oflight and can tolerate the humidity of closed containers.

Ideal plants for dish gardens are succulents and cactus inall shapes and sizes because they thrive in the open driersemi-arid climate.

SOIL

For enclosed containers, you must create drainage soplants do not drown. Layer the bottom of the vessel withabout one inch of pebbles or gravel. Add a layer ofactivated charcoal to keep the soil healthy and minimizebacteria. Rinse your charcoal and pebbles beforeplacement to remove dust and other debris. Lastly, add

potting soil for your plants. We recommend using a pottingsoil without added fertilizer because the goal is to keepyour plants small.

For open containers, regular potting soil is perfect. You canvary the depth of your potting soil in the container tocreate hills and valleys. The soil depth must match thedepth of the soil the plants are currently planted in.

PLANTINGWith terrarium and dish gardening, plants may need to betrimmed to fit in the containers. You may need to trimroots lightly or shake soil off them so that they can be

tucked in a small space. You may alsoneed to prune some foliage to keep a

plant small for an enclosedterrarium or cloche.

ACCENTS

Add stones, miniature accents, ceramic mushrooms, twigs, shells, fairies, gnomes, feathers, bark, and more togive your garden uniquepersonality.

WATERING YOURTERRARIUM OR DISH

GARDEN

Enclosed containers need far lesswatering than open containers. Water well when you firstinstall your plants. Check the container frequently toassess the soil moisture. Tropical terrariums should beconsistently moist. Do lift the lid or the cloche once in awhile to allow fresh air in.

Open containers should be checked for moisture regularly. They will need to be watered more often, especially whenyou run your furnace or air conditioner. Depending on yourplant choices, you may need to water every couple of daysor perhaps once a week. Succulents prefer a dryenvironment, but should be watered about every twoweeks.

Broken Hearts are a REAL Medical IssueSadly, the doctors say a broken heart can actually be anillness. According to Harvard Medical School, broken-heart syndrome, also called takotsubocardiomyopathy, was first identified several decades

ago in Japan. Although rarely diagnosed, it is mostcommonly seen in older women.

Patients experience a dramatic stressor in their lives (death, violence, or fear). The event causes a surge in hormones such as

adrenaline. These hormones can stun the heart and lead to irregularities of theheart's proper functions. The left ventricle in the heart weakens and balloons outward in a strange shapethat looks like a Japanese octopus trap (a tako-tsubo). When a patient has thisfeature and no blocks in the coronary arteries, doctors can distinguish thedisorder from a heart attack. For the patient, it feels like a heart attack with chest pain and shortness ofbreath. Medical professionals thought for many years that takotsubo sufferers couldrecover in about a month without any long-term repercussions, but recentresearch published in the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiographyhas shown that it can have an impact for years after the initial event. Thesepatients exhibited lingering signs that were very similar to those found in peoplewith chronic heart failure - a condition that involves heart muscle death and doesnot currently have a reliable cure.

Pet TalesBy the Naperville Area Humane Society

Jillian | 1 year | FemaleIf you look up "whirling dervish" in the dictionary, you just might find my photo. Okay, while that might notbe completely true, I am, without a doubt, energetic and bouncy, and maybe just a little chaotic -- but in agood way, of course. I have so much energy that it's almost unbelievable. Maybe the Energizer Bunny and Iare related. I'm also very smart, so not only do I need loads of physical exercise, but I also need mentalstimulation to keep me busy. The staff at NAHS can tell you all about mental activities for us smarty pants-type dogs. If I don't get what I need, then I find ways to make my own fun. I like to play with other dogs, butI shouldn't live with them or cats because I don't like to share my possessions with them. It's fine with me ifthere are children in my new home, but they should be older.

Mallory| 4 years | FemaleI’ve appointed myself the official NAHS greeter… kind of like the Walmart greeter, minus the blue vest. Idon’t think blue is my color. I’m very friendly and like to be admired whenever you have the time. I likechasing little toy mice, and when the mood strikes, I can be a little nosy. Yes, I can open cabinet doors andmaybe even some drawers. Resourceful is my middle name. I MUST be the only pet in the house because Idon’t want to share your affection with any others. Quite frankly, once you have me, there’s no need foranyone else.
