“With heart, soul, mind & strength” Friday, 24 July 2015 NEWSLETTER Issue 10 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Winter has hit with a bang at the start of Term 3. Many students and staff have been absent with illness as the winter bugs take hold. My wife and I left Madrid at a temperature of 41 degrees and arrived in Sydney to a 6 degree morning. I attended the International Conference on Thinking in Bilbao, Spain during the holidays. This was attended by 2000 delegates from many parts of the world. Many of the speakers are among the biggest names in education from the US and UK. I was very pleased to be able to hear three lectures by Professor Guy Claxton, the mind behind the Building Learning Power approach we are working on here at Lakes. I have much to think about after a conference on thinking! PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS are coming up on 27 July and 5 August. I hope you will attend to discuss your child’s progress. If you can’t make an appointment with a teacher you really want to see, please notify the JS or SS office and we will make alternative arrangements for you. HSC TRIAL EXAMINATIONS begin in three weeks, on Friday 7 August. If you have a son or daughter in Year 12 you can encourage them to do practice tests between now and then as that has been shown to be the most effective way to prepare for exams. They can ask their teacher to mark them and give feedback so they can improve when the Trial exams arrive. Planning a study timetable that includes all their subjects, and allocates more time to the ones they find hardest is also important. As they read over their notes they should ask themselves questions and answer them, then check the accuracy of their answers. Just reading and highlighting or just writing out summaries are not very effective study techniques on their own. You have to interact with the material you are studying and bring it to life. Depending on the subject, Trial exam results contribute anything from 15% to 35% of the final assessment mark, with most between 20 and 30%. This is a significant chunk of the assessment mark, which is combined with the HSC exam mark to produce their final “HSC mark”. Very effective preparation for these exams is highly recommended. Congratulations to… Fletcher Cunningham of Year 11 who will travel to Poland in September as Captain of the Australian Olympic Hopes Kayaking Team. What a fantastic achievement for someone as young as Fletcher. Ashley Pernecker of Year 5 who has qualified for the National Schools Cross Country carnival after her wonderful achievement at the NSW PSSA carnival. Remember to let me know if your son or daughter is achieving at a high level in anything outside of school. I would love to share that with our whole school community. CHAPLAIN’S CHAT

Matt’s Mutterings Most people I know do not like to talk about death. In our modern world we have tried to distance ourselves from death and in all honesty nobody really likes the idea of mortality. Even Jesus wept when his friend Lazarus died and he too experienced the pain of loss and grief. Jesus also experienced death, and a horrific death it was. For me, strange as this may sound, this brings comfort knowing that Jesus understands what it is like to go through the deepest sorrow and anguish.

In the first week of term my parent’s neighbour of some 45 years died. Betty has known me my whole life and was always a warm, kind-hearted and a generous woman. She was the glue in her family, bringing family members together regularly and doting on her grandkids. Her death will create a huge hole of grief that will leave so many people reeling for the months to come. An era has ended and a new one has begun. It is hard to capture in words the sadness that I and others are feeling.

Also last week I had a long conversation with a friend who is facing death in the eye. We talked about making the most of life, living moment to moment and preparing for death. This period of their life has come out of the blue and rocked them to the core. Family members have had to make life changing decisions around death. It was a profound privilege for me to share time with them as we talked funeral arrangements, ongoing catch-ups and possibilities all with a cloud of not knowing the when…when will it all end.

But…and this is a big “but”…death is not the end. Jesus was very clear about this when he conquered death and rose again. God invites us into his eternal presence through Jesus’ resurrection. Death is not a wall that we slam into, but a doorway into the arms of God. Have you heard this good news yet? I hope you know this in your heart. Last year, a very wise person facing their own mortality said words like this to me… “We are all dying…some of us just have a clearer idea about what that looks like and when that might be. This life is a gift from God and we need to live it that way.” Carpe Diem my friends, hear the good news and believe.

Bless ya! Rev’d Matt Shorten (Chaplain)

ENGLISH / HISTORY NEWS The Vietnam travellers returned safely from their trip to Vietnam in the school holidays. From all accounts (and if you were following them on Facebook) the students and staff had a wonderful time. For these students, traveling to Vietnam meant that they were able to actually see and experience the culture explored by Anh DO in his book ‘Happiest Refugee’ and the impact of the Vietnam War. These were studied by the students in class last year. A big thank you to Mrs Manners, Ms Roche, Miss Newton and Mr Langejans who travelled with the students and kept them safe and well whilst they were there.

This term we welcome Mrs Jane Rocks as part of the English and History Department. She will be replacing Mrs Tamara Gallagher whilst she is on Maternity Leave. Mrs Rocks has been a casual teacher for us for many years and we are excited about having her as full-time member of staff.

We have hit the ground running with Term 3 being our Major Project term. On the first day back Year 8 English handed in their Major Poetry Projects. Students had to research and write poems which explored three cultures of their own choosing. The students had to also visually represent these poems. They have done a marvellous job; photos of a selection of the students’ work are on the school Facebook page and all the projects are on display in the SS library for the next few weeks.

Major Projects in English are also due this term in Year 7, Year 9 and Year 10: Year 7: Showbag for their favourite book. Year 9: Picture Books based on Steve Herrick’s By the River Year 10: Shakespeare Tempest Appropriation

This term we will again see A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM held in the Senior School Library. Last year our History students astounded us with their creativity and research skills! We look forward and are excited about what they will produce this year. The projects for Years 7-10 have all been issued to the students, all projects are worked on in class, as well as being worked on at home. The projects are based on the concept of Inquiry Based Learning. The students demonstrated last year that they love this way of learning, which has definitely inspired many students in History! Place the date in your diary, THURSDAY, 10 SEPTEMBER and be sure to come, as our students take us on a journey through Ancient China (Year 7); Shogun Japan (Year 8); Our ANZAC heroes (Year 9) and Decades of Change (Year 10)!

In the last week of term the Lakes Grammar great Spelling Bee will also take place, with the finalists from Years 7 and 8 battling it out for the title!

NEW YORK TOUR

Over the past few years we have seen the emergence of a Creative Arts Faculty that is really flourishing. The Music Department has developed quickly, particularly under the care of Miss Abdilla and Miss Mitchell. The recent production, 'Pure Imagination' has given students a growing confidence in their performance ability. Our art students continue to enjoy opportunities to explore, create and be inspired. With this in mind, the faculty has decided that it is time to broaden our wings and take students on a cultural tour of New York.

The recent information evening was extremely successful and we are close to acquiring the numbers for the tour to go ahead. We need 30 people to sign up and pay their deposits by the 30th July. Directions for joining and payment can be found in the information note. Please contact the Senior School office or any Art or Music Teacher in C block for forms. You still have time to join the Tour, just remember you need to be a member of the choir or an Art or Photography student.

SENIOR SCHOOL ART EXHIBITIONS

We have two exhibitions taking place in August and September. Firstly, 20 of our Senior students are entering art works in the Lakes Anglican Church exhibition. The Church exhibition opens on Thursday, 6 August and runs through to Sunday, 9 August. The opening takes place on Friday, 7 August at 6:30pm.

Our annual art exhibition 'Visions' will open on Friday, 28 August. The very talented students have once again prepared an excellent body of work for show at the Gosford Regional Art Gallery. The artists who travelled to Bundanon Art Camp will exhibit a beautiful range of hand made books and a giant landscape, wall installation. Students never cease to amaze me with their unique view of the world. We are looking for parent volunteers who would be interested in supervising the Gosford exhibition during office hours. For further inquires please contact Mrs Hobden via school email or leave a message at the Senior School office.

CAREERS NEWS

This is a very busy term for Careers. Year 12 students are strongly advised to go to lakesgrammarcareers.com and go to the Calendar

in the ‘Important Information’ tab to check out closing dates for the Early Admission Schemes for Universities - some of which will close this month. This will allow top performing students to get an early offer from Universities. Students need to check the University website of their choice and are recommended to put in an application immediately. Different Universities have different application procedures. The SRS (Schools Recommendation Scheme) run by UAC cannot be applied for until students have already lodged a UAC application. Every student taking their HSC this year is advised to complete one of these forms. This information will be provided at the meeting held at school on 3rd September at which the University of Newcastle will be in attendance. University Open days are running through August and September, details can be found in the Calendar on the lakesgrammarcareers.com website.

Year 10 and Year 11 students will be having a meeting with a representative from Central Coast Group Training in regards to apprenticeships and application procedures. Year 10 student career interviews should conclude in the next week or so with final subject selection coming later in the term.

SENIOR SCHOOL ATHLETICS: The Senior School Athletics team competed on Tuesday, 21 July at the HRIS Championships at

Glendale. The team performed extremely well all day and I have the wonderful pleasure in announcing that we finished in 4 th place overall and we estimate that 15 students will be selected in the HRIS team. Full results and report will be in the next newsletter. Thank you to Mr Campbell and Mrs King for managing the team and to Mr Beecroft for acting as an official.

SENIOR SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Congratulations to Olivia Glanville and Ben Platt who both competed at the CIS Cross Country

Championships at the end of last term. Olivia finished 28th in the 14 Years Girls and Ben 29th in the 18/19 Years Boys. The fields at CIS are very large and extremely competitive so both these students should be very proud of their results.

SPORTS CHOICES: This term has seen the introduction of Sport Choices appearing on students’ timetables in the Senior School. This

assists with administration and ease of locating students. Please look at your child’s timetable on either Student Café or Parent Lounge to ensure they are in the correct sport. If they are not please email Mr Jones.

SCHOOL REPRESENTATION: It is a great honour to represent Lakes Grammar and HRIS. It is obvious a student has a talent in a

particular sport if they are chosen for representative duties and as such should treat it is a privilege. Recently we have had far too many students withdraw from events without notice and for simple reasons, such as I did not want to go. Associations such as HRIS, AICES and CIS have introduced fines for students who withdraw without a medical certificate. Last year HRIS passed a motion that students withdrawing from a team event without sufficient notice or medical certificate will be suspended from HRIS selection for 12 months. I ask parents to assist us with ensuring their children meet their obligations for team selection. It really does hinder the performance if a team member is absent.

AICES/CIS/PSSA/ALL SCHOOLS: For those students who are selected in HRIS Teams that compete at AICES, NSW CIS, NSW

PSSA or All Schools there are associated levies and charges. Typically students attending AICES will be charged $10. Students attending NSW CIS $22.50 and those going to NSW PSSA or All Schools $30 - $40. These charges are for administration and venue entry fees. Lakes Grammar covers all charges for HRIS events but charges at the higher levels are charged to parents.

Upcoming Events in the Junior Canteen

During Term 3, the junior canteen is running a program linked with “Fresh for Kids Campaign”. The challenge is to encourage children to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables during Term 3. The promotion runs from the 10 August till the 18 September. Students are simply rewarded with a sticker for purchasing food from the canteen that contains fresh fruit and/or vegetables at a cost of $1.00. Once students have collected 2 stickers they can hand their completed entry over to the canteen manager and instantly receive a Fresh for Kids colour pencil with character eraser – there are 7 to collect.

Once the campaign has concluded, all completed entry forms need to be sent back to Sydney Markets where they all go in a draw to win some fantastic major prizes. Prizes this year include: First Prize Home entertainment pack including a 32” LED LCD TV and a 3D Blu-ray Player. Second Prize: 1 of 3 iPad minis 16GB with Wi-Fi Third Prize 1 of 10 Fresh for Kids gift pack including a backpack, lunch box cooler and drink bottle. Fourth Prize: 1 of 20 Event cinemas movie gift cards.

Our P&F Fathers’ Day breakfast will be held on Friday, 4 September, menu to come out shortly. Special event lunch to be held on Tuesday, 15 September, detail to come later in term. Just a reminder that all profits from the canteens do go back into the school.

Woolworths Earn & Learn 2015

This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program we will be able

to get new educational resources for our school/early learning centre – and all we need you to do is shop for

your groceries at Woolworths.

From Wednesday 15th July to Tuesday 8th September, we are collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You

will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards).

Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s

complete, the Sticker Sheet can be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school or at your local

Woolworths.

LAKES GRAMMAR IT DEPARTMENT Every now and then, in the area of Information Technology, we discover something that has the potential to change the way we do things. The iPhone is one of the best innovations of recent times that had qualities to instigate change. And change our lives it did! Cloud services, like Google Docs and Microsoft Office 365 have been gaining momentum over recent years and have been improving quickly. These services allow us to save our documents in the cloud for collaboration and other tasks. Recently, Microsoft made Office 365 available to qualifying schools. As a qualifying school, we have been making changes to cater for Office 365 to make the transition as smooth as possible for staff and students.

Office 365 is a cloud based Office suite of applications with email and storage, but there is much more we can do with Office 365 in the future. At this stage Year 3 to Year 12 students have access to Office 365.

What do you get?

The Latest Office for free. No need to buy Office for your new computer.

Word, Excel & PowerPoint can be installed on up to 5 home computers for free.

Office for OSX Mac 2016 is now available on Office 365 and is not yet available via any other means. You cannot buy it in the shops and it is not available to business customers yet

When released, Office 2016 for Windows will be available immediately to all Office 365 users.

Word, Excel & PowerPoint on your iPad – search “Microsoft” on the iOS AppStore for these and more Microsoft apps

OneDrive – gives staff and students 1TB for personal storage in the Office 365 cloud

Outlook online – up to 50GB of mail storage

SharePoint for collaboration.

Just to name the highlights Over the recent holidays student mailboxes (Year 3 to Year 12) were migrated off Lakes Grammar’s mail servers to Microsoft’s Office 365 mail servers. Students now can access email and other Office 365 services from the Intranet page. Students can also connect their iPad to their Office 365 mailbox with ease by selecting Exchange email and entering their full email address and password. See more below.

How to get started?

Goto http://portal.office.com and login with your email address and password. (email format for students is [email protected])

Install the iOS Microsoft apps on your iPad

If you have a home computer with an old version of Office you can update from your Office 365 account.

What to expect in the future? Next week Microsoft is releasing Windows 10. It is built to integrate fully with Office 365. This is expected to be the launch of Office 2016 for Windows. More information will follow. As Office 365 is built for collaboration to make it easy to share files, there are a few tools available to facilitate this for teachers. Teachers will be able to share documents and tasks to their class and see students work on these documents close to real time. A student could ask a question, have their teacher look at this work, no matter where they are and give feedback. Microsoft is developing features all the time, most recently a video portal and a work place portal (called Delve) with your recent documents as a place to collaborate. There are more features that have not been outlined above, so go and take a look for yourself. We hope that your child finds Office 365 useful.

Dear Parents

Over the past 12 months we have experienced a significant increase in the costs to manufacture your uniforms. This is mainly, but not solely due to the decrease in the Australian Dollar by nearly 20%.

During the same time we have maintained pricing to ensure that you have not been impacted at the register. We have also introduced a range of internal measures to cushion the impact of the falling Australian Dollar without impacting on the quality or consistency of your uniforms.

Whilst we have absorbed some of the impact of the change, we have no choice but to introduce a revised pricelist effective 1 August 2015. This is attached to this newsletter.

We encourage you to purchase or Lay by uniforms before this date to beat the price rise.

We thank you for understanding and hope you continue to enjoy your experience with Alinta Apparel.

Warm regards
