The observance of National Library Week has been sponsored by the American Library Association since 1958. Its purpose is to celebrate the nation’s libraries and to promote library use and support. The theme for 2017 is “Library’s Transform,” to reflect the value, impact, and services provided by libraries. How can you participate in National Library Week? Here are a few ideas for you: 1. Visit your local library! Now is great time to explore resources that may not already be familiar to you. Did you know we have databases to help you fix your car, research your ancestors, find scholarships, learn languages, and more? Have you ever checked out a museum pass? Are you interested in learning how to download e-Books and e-Audio books? Come to your local library to learn more! 2. Join the online celebration by following and sharing the hashtags #NationalLibraryWeek and #LibrariesTransform. Check out “I Love Libraries” Facebook account to discover shareable National Library Week posts, as well as a Twibbons for your Facebook and Twitter profile pictures. 3. Monday, April 10 watch for the release of the State of America’s Libraries Report including Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2016. Past reports are available online. It might surprise you to see what made the frequently challenged list! 4. Tuesday, April 11 is National Library Workers Day. Stop in to your local branch to say thanks to your favorite library workers! #NLWD17 Since there is way too much going on to fit it all into just one week, the Library System will be celebrating the entire month of April. The Library System will be hosting programs on nutrition, craft workshops, Money Smart Week, Cowboy Poetry night, author visits, and displays of our “Un-Bound Recycled Book Art” contest entries. This LSTA funding has been instrumental in the success of the Washington County Library System. Through the LSTA we have purchased ebooks to start our online collection, we have purchased Self-checkout to improve service, and we have purchased computers and books for the new Hildale library. Over the past three years, that represents over $150,000 of additional funding for these great projects. Without it, we would struggle to move our library forward, but would fall behind as we strive to main- tain what we currently have. None of our Utah Representatives have signed either letter. Our local Representative is Chris Stewart, and it is critical that supporters of the library contact him. His website/contact info is available at http://stewart.house.gov/. As he serves on the Appropriations Committee, you should ask him to include LSTA and IAL on his List of Priorities to the Appropriations Committee. As of March 28th, there were only 36 representatives who had signed the LSTA letter and 91 who had signed the IAL letter. This is not enough. ALA has created a page called Fight for Libraries! This page talks about the two appropriations. It's a great place to keep up to date with what's happening at the Federal level. This is a time to be persistent and insistent that Libraries change lives. More calls and emails really do make a differ- ence. Now is not the time to be shy. These men and women represent our interests and our communities. To them, silence means we agree that we don't need or want LSTA or IAL funding. PLEASE, HELP. Contact Representative Stewart today.

Library Patrons,

Do you value the library? You may not have known, but the Institute of Museum and Library Services funding is at risk in President Trump's proposed budget. As a result the LSTA (Library Services and Technol-ogy Act) and the IAL (Innovative Approaches to Literacy) may no longer be available.

Without it, we would struggle to move our library forward, but would fall behind as we strive to main-tain what we currently have.

None of our Utah Representatives have signed either letter. Our local Representative is Chris Stewart, and it is critical that supporters of the library contact him. Library Employee Spotlight

The Library Employee spotlight for March 2017 shines on Jayme Mendenhall. As a clerk in Springdale, Jayme’s primary responsibility is over story time and children’s programming. She is currently working on getting sponsors and nding activities for upcoming summer reading programs. She is also does outreach, leaving the library every Wednesday to go into Zion National Park to do story time at Springdale’s only day care center. She conducts a story time in the library every Friday as well. The bulletin board pictured behind us is just one example of her creative talent.

Jayme is a single mother of two girls - Courtney and Ashley. She has an Associate’s degree in Applied Science. She is currently going to Dixie State and working on a Bachelor of Individualized Studies in Culture and Business and will nish her degree in December! Before coming to work for the

Washington County Library System she was a licensed massage therapist. She continues to do massages while juggling clerk duties and school. Because of her good grades she was invited to be a contestant in the Dixie Queen Pageant. Please join me in congratulating Jayme!

In honor of National Poetry Month, here are two truly terrible poems written especially for you, dear reader:

Well, I warned you they would be terrible. If you need to rinse the awful poems out of your brain, a good way to do so is watching some of our DVDs. Here are a few recent additions that work well as brainy-palate cleansers:

As always, DVDs are FREE to check out with your Washington County Library card. And when you swing by to pick some up, be sure to share your favorite snippet of poetry with us. But...maybe no more limericks.

April is National Poetry Month in the US, and alongside all of the readings and workshops, one much loved oshoot is Cowboy Poetry Week, celebrated in 2017 from April 16th through April 22nd. The tradition of cowboy poetry started in the early days of the Western frontier, where folk stories were preserved orally, often in the form of a poem.

The Washington County Library System gives a hearty hats o to those who preserve this tradition with poetry and music that celebrates frontier life and the modern western experience. Round up the entire family and join us at one of the readings presented by the Mesquite Cowboy Poets Group, an organization of poets and musicians from Utah and Nevada. Events are scheduled as follows:

Poets include Russ Westwood, Marleen Bussma, Leon Gubler, Mike Prince, Farrel Bott, Bob Christensen, and Paul Gooch. Casey Lofthouse will provide authentic cowboy music at select events. Check with your library branch for more information. Rhyme ‘em, cowboy!

Here are some great events and programs happening in a library near you!

The St. George branch will be hosting a “National Poetry Month Celebration” on April 10th! In coordination with Dr. Cindy King of Dixie State University and Lin Floyd of the local guild of the Utah State Poetry Society, the library will be holding a poetry reading featuring poets from Dixie State University and the local poetry guild, with the intention of increasing connections between the university, the library, and the community.

It will also be time to inform patrons about resources and opportu-nities for writers and poets available within the community and at the library. After brief introductions from the library, the university, and the guild, we will proceed with original poetry readings from approximately 15 poets. For more information contact Ruth Tanner @ (435) 634-5737.

Can’t think of what to read next? Itching for a group of people to talk books with? Join one of the amazing monthly book club discussions at a library branch near you! The Readers Circle Book Club at the Hurricane branch will be discussing “The Rent Collector” by Cameron Wright on April 7th at 3:00 pm. The book club is open to all – you don’t even HAVE to read the book… but we recommend it. There are lively discussions, light refreshments and a good time had by all!

As well, the Book Ends Book Group at the Washington branch will be talking about “The Summer Before the War” by Helen Simonson on April 20th at 4:30 pm. You can nd all the book club schedules on our website, too! Just go to http://library.washco.utah.gov/ and click on each branch’s webpage to nd them. There is always a wide range of diverse book choices and great people talking about them! You’re sure to nd your next favorite read!
