Message from the Chamber President – Drew Anlas:

Expectations and Benefits!

Over the first 6 months of my presidency at the Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce, I have had the privilege to meet many of our members at different events we have hosted. I usually ask each member, “What do you expect to get out of being a member of the Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce?”. Responses to that question vary, but the general consensus is to get more business and/or

increase revenue.

So how do you expect to increase your business? At our chamber I have seen many business relationships grow from continued

participation at events, such as the coffee connector breakfast and the business after hours networking events. The members that are visible and establish per-sonal relationships with other members are doing great growing their businesses. Being a speaker or sponsor at an event gives excellent exposure to your business and the chance to be heard by many other chamber members. Joining a committee is also an excellent way to

connect with other members and help the chamber at the same time. What doesn’t usually work? One and done! Showing up and expecting business by attending one event.

Cultivating relationships takes a lot longer than 1 visit before you start seeing results. The more you are seen

and heard, the more your message will get through to other members. Get involved!

How does the chamber help and what are the benefits of membership? • The Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce currently hosts over 80 events each calendar year. The

weekly coffee connector breakfast offers speaker and sponsor opportunities with an average atten-dance of 50 people. Our annual business expo, golf outing, & summer scholarship BBQ are other

excellent events. • Our marketing committee has put together some great opportunities that include the brand new

“Member Spotlight” that gives members the chance to highlight their business in our quarterly news-letter, website, email, social media, as well as being featured in the Coast Star Newspaper! Other marketing opportunities include MAP advertising (our every 2 year local Map), our meeting banner sign advertising the chamber and our members, which is displayed at all events and the “Summer Kickoff Classic” that allows for sponsor and advertising opportunities during our welcome to the

summer at the Jersey Shore local bus tour. • Joint events with other chambers. We have done educational events such as Dale Carnegie training

courses to joint networking at the Lakewood BlueClaws Stadium. The Asbury Park Chamber has

joined us for speed networking and beach networking events.

So that is some of what we do to help you promote and grow your business. I look forward to hearing from you. Tell me about your ideas and what you think may work to make our

chamber even better moving forward. Feel free to call me anytime if you have any questions or comments on

how we can help you. Thanks and enjoy the remainder of the summer at the Jersey Shore.

Barter Your Way to Better Business Relationships By Lisa Vitale

Savvy business owners know that it takes a lot more than good luck and a great idea in order to be successful. There’s com-

petition at every turn, and it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. How do entrepreneurs attract potential custom-

ers to choose their product or service? What’s a positive way to showcase a competitive advantage? While traditional ad-

vertising and public relations methods can be effective, one of the most credible ways to attract new business is through

word-of-mouth referrals.

Word-of-mouth referrals generally come from your existing customer base. When you deliver quality work and stellar ser-

vice, you get happy customers. These customers believe in the value of your goods and services, and will provide you with

repeat business in the future. How can you turn today’s five happy customers into tomorrow’s ten happy customers? By

networking!

One very powerful way to grow your network and increase sales is by joining a barter exchange, like BarterPays! in Howell.

Barter networks are made up of hundreds of local businesses that use barter as a low-cost way to market their companies.

By joining a trade exchange, small business owners expand their market share, lower cash expenses and meet other like-

minded entrepreneurs in a warm, friendly atmosphere. Members feel a close camaraderie within the group, and as such,

often refer other members to friends and business associates. Becoming a member of a barter exchange allows you to de-

velop strong relationships with other business owners in the Network, which can generate cash sales through word-of-

mouth marketing.

At BarterPays!, we’ve seen firsthand how barter customers can bring our members new cash customers. A BarterPays!

member who owns an area carpet store hired another member to create an awning for his storefront. He received a beau-

tiful, quality awning and paid for the item with barter dollars. He was so happy with the design and installation, he excit-

edly recommended the awning company to many of his own customers. The awning company was thrilled! They received

many new cash customers as a result of these referrals, even landing one job worth $10,000! And it was all possible

through the power of networking at BarterPays!.

Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce members can join BarterPays! for just $39 this summer! Use promo code BARTER-

ISHOT when you apply online. Offer expires Labor Day. For more information about BarterPays!, please visit

www.barterpays.com.

What you don’t know about your Errors and Omissions insurance might hurt you!

If you are an engineer, accountant, architect, attorney, realtor, in-

surance producer, designer, business coach or consultant, you are

probably aware of the need to carry Professional Liability or Errors

and Omissions Insurance (for short E&O).

This is insurance that covers claims resulting from an error or omis-

sion during the delivery of a professional service. It is not slip and

fall protection (General Liability) and it is not burn down my build-

ing protection (Property Insurance). It is protection for my profes-

sional brain power (or lack thereof…).

The Basics First off, you need to look differently at this type of coverage in

comparison to, say, auto insurance. For the greater majority of con-

sultants, paying damages for a claim stemming from an error or

omission of professional services will not happen. Far more likely,

however, is being brought into a third party law suit where a con-

sultant (for example, an architect) is sued along with the general

contractor who built a deck that fell off the back of a house.

Undoubtedly in that example, it will take several court hearings for

the judge to remove the consultant and allow the claim to stand

against the contractor who forgot to bolt the deck to the house.

Each one of those hearings will cost thousands in lawyer fees. This

is why when purchasing E&O insurance is like renting a law firm.

For the cost of the deductible and the premium, you can have $1

million or more in legal representation on the likely scenario that

you are innocent, but need the courts to work through to that con-

clusion.

The carrier Not every insurance company writes E&O well for each type of con-

sultant. There are some carriers who do accountants very well.

Some carriers have great track records for attorneys. Others have

specialized engineering forms. Your agent should know this. This is

the one insurance product that you must not select on price alone.

Deductible So, when you were starting out your practice, your agent quoted up

a basic $1 million E&O with a $2,500 deductible. You have never

asked why since. Does this limit make sense? What does a typical hearing cost for an attorney? How is the business cash

flow? Can you pay as you go to make a higher deductible more palatable? Now is the time to stop down and ask these

questions.

Good luck and remember that not knowing about the insurance you need is the biggest error and omission of all!

Respectfully,

CONSIDERING A WHITE KITCHEN? White kitchens are red-hot, or should we say white-hot. Nine out of 10 kitchens we've been hired to do in the last three

years have been all white.

They reflect light and make your space look wide open, clean and inviting. White can be glamorous or earthy, dressed up or

simple and casual. it's a classic look that can also keep up with trends.

But an all white kitchen is not for everyone. Maintenance is one consideration, especially with young children. If you think

you want a white kitchen, here we'll offer the benefit of our experiences in designing hundreds of kitchens.

As with clothing, white is a classic that never goes out of style. White cabinets are a safe choice that goes with everything.

So if you have white cabinets and countertops, you will be free in the future to add color by changing out the wall paint,

accessories, flooring, etc., without the major expense of cabinetry.

A pure white kitchen can be high maintenance. Dirt and food stains stand out. If you don’t clean it enough, the clean look

that you were going for when you chose the kitchen will be lost. Tip: If you are worried about your painted white cabinets

chipping, use a natural wood stained finish instead of paint.

Some people fear that a white kitchen looks sterile or severe, particularly if it's a contemporary kitchen. White is particu-

larly nice in beach houses and island retreats, where its coolness can make a hot day seem less oppressive. Tip: For a

warmer look, go for a slightly off-white kitchen. Or use wood or other natural materials to soften the look. Enhancing the

cabinets with a tinted wood glaze in oyster or pewter tones can add a lot.

Don’t get stuck on the idea that all the whites in your kitchen have to be exactly the same. That’s impossible and not even

necessary. The various materials you will be using such as stone and paint will only need to complement each other. Differ-

ent finishes and textures definitely make the room interesting. Tip: Choose high quality materials because white shows

detail.

White is timeless and will always look good, so you don't need to worry about your kitchen looking dated with white cabi-

nets. For a kitchen you can love for a long time, consider using white as your base color. White works.

Strategize Your Way to Success Gannett NJ

In "The Art of War," the ancient Chinese military master Sun Tzu wrote that “Tactics without strategy is the noise before

defeat.” Tzu’s insights have kept his book relevant in military and business circles some 2,500 years later. But what exactly

is strategy? How is different from tactics? Why does it play a starring role in so many success stories? And how can it help

your business succeed?

You need a plan.

A strategy is a long-term plan to achieve major goals. It focuses on the big picture and is idea-based, not the day-to-day

details. A company’s overall business strategy will likely be supported by other strategies that serve it, including your busi-

ness and marketing strategy.

Business Strategy: Your long-term plan for the future of your business. It defines your goals, explains how your company

can achieve them, and establishes how you will allocate your resources along the way.

Marketing Strategy: Your big-picture efforts in service of your business strategy. It defines how your company will commu-

nicate with consumers in order to influence their buying decisions.

Build a strong strategy.

Here are some common foundational pieces to build a cohesive strategy for your business:

• Business Goals: The long-term achievements you have set for your business.

• Competitive Position: An assessment of how you compare to your competitors.

• Local Economic Trends: An analysis of your environment. Though these factors are beyond your control, they will have

a profound influence on your planning.

• Targeting: Determining who your customers and/or best prospects are and the most effective ways to reach them.

• SWOT Analysis: An assessment of how your company’s strengths and weaknesses relate to opportunities and threats

in the marketplace. This helps to determine the state of your business and whether or not your goals are realistic and

achievable.

• Marketing Goals: The long-term marketing achievements you will need to accomplish in order to meet your business

goals.

• Business Plans and Initiatives: The plans you will make and actions you will take, including your marketing budget, ven-

dor and personnel requirements, your methods of measuring success, and more.

Small businesses don’t often have the time or resources to go through this important process. Gannett NJ – the state’s

most powerful media and marketing solutions organization – can help. Visit GannettNJ.com or give them a call at 732-643-

3110 to learn more.

More tips for helping you enjoy your home this summer

Now that summer is in full swing, we hope you are enjoying the fruits and veggies of the sea-

son, the shade and décor of your outdoor living space, and spending time with family and

friends. Here are some ideas to help you enjoy your time at home this summer even more:

• Show off your stuff! Repurpose glass candy dishes, jars and trays that you have been

collecting in a closet. Use them for bird food, flowers, fruit, beverages and more, to add

color to your end tables or garden area.

• Homemade lemonade is a refreshing drink any way you serve it; try adding fresh mint,

vodka, fresh limes, fresh tea, or just sugar. And, be sure to serve it over a full glass of ice!

• Filling a cooler with ice is a wonderful way to bring your refrigerator outdoors. If shaded,

your cooler can last up to two days. Filling it with drinks and cut up fruit ensures a

healthy way to stay hydrated on hot days.

• Do you have half-filled water bottles lying around? If so, put them in the freezer and when you’re heading out for the

day just top them off with fresh water for an instantly cold drink on the go!

• Don’t feel like dealing with huge bowls for fruit? Try cutting off the top of the fruit (a watermelon is a good example),

scoop out the fresh fruit, chop and cut as necessary, perhaps mix with other fruits, put the fruit back into the cavity of

the rind and enjoy!

• Leave sunscreen out where you can see it. That will help remind you to reapply it regularly.

• Put up a clothesline. Hanging your sheets out to dry on hot days will help reduce energy use while freeing up your time

since you won’t have to keep track of when the dryer is done. Plus, clothes, sheets and linens dried outside very often

have a wonderful scent.

• If you’re looking to “connect” while enjoying time on your deck, patio, pool, etc.., make sure your WIFI connection is

strong. If not, you may want to consider upgrading to a long range router or adding a second router to your home con-

figuration.

• Bring your music outdoors. Listening to music can be very welcoming and relaxing. There are many devices on the mar-

ket today that connect smartphones to wireless speakers which means listening to music outdoors is easier than ever.

We hope, through our three-part series, we’ve given you some simple tips and ideas on how to prep and enjoy your home

for the spring and summer seasons. If you would like our help implementing any of these ideas, please give us a call. Your

time living at the Jersey Shore should never be tied down with chores. CHORES… make yours… OURS!

Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce 14th Annual Golf Outing

This year’s outing, held at the Pine Barrens Golf Club, was a morning

event, beginning with a delicious breakfast at 6:30 am followed by a

Shotgun Tee Off at 8:00 am.

The Pine Barren Golf Club provided just enough challenge without

taking away from the fun on a gorgeous golf course. Foursomes en-

joyed the company of new and old friends and some old-fashioned

competition with our Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive contests.

A big thank you to the attentive golf club staff that made sure a good

day was had by all.

As lunch was served the awards were given out; all winners went home with great prizes donated by generous sponsors,

members and the JSCC. There was an opportunity to win door prizes and no one left empty handed, as there were goodie

bags for all.

A wonderful putting contest and silent auction raised money for the TEARS Foundation to assist families in New Jersey with

pregnancy and infant loss.

Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa of Spring Lake had talented masseurs on hand to help our golfers (and volunteers)

relax and loosen up after a long morning.

A very special thank you to our sponsors: Gold Sponsors – Broege Neumann Fisher & Shaver, Matt Appel of AXA Advisors,

Klein’s Fish Market and Waterside Café, Manasquan Bank and C & A Financial Group; Silver Sponsors- Kearny Bank; Cocktail

Sponsor – Bar Anticipation; Putting Green Sponsor- E.H. Thomson & Co., Inc. and ESW Enterprises; Cart Sponsor- Harbor-

Point Bancard; Design Sponsor- inVisual; Print Sponsor – The UPS Store; Hole-in-One Sponsor- Larson Ford and our all of

our Flag and Hole sponsors.

Thank you to our chamber members and volunteers who generously donated items for door prizes, golf goodie bags and

their time volunteering.

See you in 2017!

JERSEY SHORE SUMMER KICKOFF

One of their signature events is their Jersey Shore Sum-

mer Kickoff, which signals the start of the summer sea-

son for small businesses on the Jersey Shore. And this

year’s event on May 27 was unlike any other.

The Chamber kicked off Memorial Day weekend with a

tour of four local restaurants, welcoming JSCC members

and community members, alike. A seat on a bus for only

$10 was a nice option for those not wanting to drive or for those just wanting that extra dose of

camaraderie.

The result was a festive gathering of more than 100 people that generated nearly four

thousand dollars for the Chamber.

The social networking event began at Klein’s in Belmar where guests were treated to

drink and appetizer specials as well as a visit from Lou Russo from 94.3 The Point’s

“Lou and Liz Morning Show.” Also serving as greeters and sponsors at the first stop

were Chamber President Drew Anlas and Chamber Secretary & Committee Chair

Adam Puharic, of Danskin Agency.

“The Jersey Shore Chamber was there for me when I started my insurance practice,

even before I had my first client,” said Puharic. “Now that my business has grown,

the Chamber provides me an opportunity to give back and help out other aspiring

entrepreneurs.”

The second stop on the summer kick-off tour was Scarborough Fair in Wall Town-

ship, where location hosts Victor Coppola of GreenWorks Environmental, LLC, and

Michelle Hurley of Townsquare Media greeted guests and invited them to sample

more tasty food and drink.

"This Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce has been a great surprise,” said Coppola. “From the number of events and qual-

ity programs to the camaraderie of the members and business leads, I have been more than impressed since joining.”

Later that afternoon, Chamber Second Vice President Pat

Mayer of Diane Turton Realtors and Susan Tritsch of New

York Life Insurance Co. and NYLIFE Securities LLC hosted

guests at Fratello’s in Sea Girt where guests again had the

opportunity to sample some of the restaurant’s food and

drink.

The event rounded out its tour at Beach Haus Brewery in

Belmar where guests were able to sample fine beers and

tour the brewery with location hosts Alison Manser Ertl of

Night & Day magazine, and Russ McIver of Connections Un

Ltd, LLC.

Leverage Your Membership with the

Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce

Here are three ways to leverage your JSCC Membership to better

your business and the community.

Membership in the Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce provides your business with powerful tools to mar-ket your services, reach potential clients, and foster positive economic development in the communities where you live and work. Joining the JSCC is about more than attending General Membership Meetings. Here are three hot tips for making your membership dollars work for you: Contribute to our newsletter and have your article reach our entire email database….all for FREE. By writing articles in the quarterly JSCC Southern Exposure Newsletter, your words of wisdom will reach the entire JSCC email database. This is a surefire way to leverage your membership dollars and market your industry know-how to a friendly audience that you will meet again. Articles with an awareness or education focus can be forwarded to clients who need your services, providing endless opportunity to work with the existing membership to reach your ideal customer. Hosting a “Business After-Hours” is the lowest cost solution for bringing customers through your door. One of the benefits to JSCC membership is the opportunity to host a “business after-hours” gathering that is broadcast to members with plan-ning advice provided by the Chamber. There is simply no more inexpensive way to create advertising, broadcast a message, and reach a willing and enthusiastic audience. What would you pay to have 30 – 70 potential customers in front of you at once? Joining the JSCC allows the Chamber to flourish and provides an important business incubator for startups and entrepre-neurs. Let’s face it, the past two years have proven that we all share the same national economy. Whether your business has 300 employees or you are the “chief cook and bottle washer,” a vibrant chamber allows startups the best opportunity to reach customers, test their business models and grow into success. Your chamber membership is about more than reaching customers. Even the largest of companies in our area can do their part in supporting the community around them.
