Each and every day I re�ect on how far we have come in the 8 years since we have moved into our new building on Garden Street. We are only just now living up to the vision of what we had hoped our new increased space would allow us to do in service to the commu-nity. Following the recession and tumultuous period for the local mental health system, we have emerged as a stronger and healthier organization. In the last 12 months we have added three new housing sites, received a national accreditation for our Employment Services program and have expanded the 6th and 9th grade Mental Health Matters program to serve more than 1,600 local students! �is newsletter is our messenger of gratitude for our community partners, our committed funders and our generous donors. Together we face the challenges of addressing the unmet needs of today and aspire to educate youth and their families. Together we are making a genuine di�erence in people’s lives.

Message from the CEO: Annmarie Cameron

Annmarie Cameron

Welcome Our New Board Chair & Members We are pleased to welcome Andrea Carnaghe as our new Board Chair. Andrea brings nearly three decades of experience in �nance and accounting to our organization. She currently teaches accounting at Santa Barbara City College and maintains a variety of clients with Accounting a La Carte. Andrea earned her B.A. in Accounting from Golden Gate University, where she also served as a university instructor teaching beginning and intermediate accounting. She has experience working with both privately-held companies and Fortune 500 companies, including real estate

clients, restaurants, manufacturers, and nonpro�t organizations. Prior to joining our Board in 2012 Andrea served as an accounting volunteer on our �nance committee, where she grew passionate and committed to our work in the community through her personal connection with mental health.

Earlier this year we also announced our two returning board members, Darcy Keep and Karel de Veer. We are proud to have Andrea, Darcy and Karel as part of our extraordinary team of directors!

Eileen Francis Goes the Extra Mile

Born in San Luis Obispo, Eileen Francis moved to Santa Barbara in 1961 and held a wonderful career as an elementary school teacher for thirty-�ve years. While also living with OCD, anxiety, depression and PTSD, she only allowed her

symptoms to show in faculty meetings, as the classroom was a respite from her challenges. She �nds solace in participating in the activities she loves in the Santa Barbara community, including spending time at the Mental Wellness Center.

As a member of the Fellowship Club since July 2014, she joins in on some of her favorite hobbies including making jewelry in the art room, playing bingo on �ursday afternoons and leading the poetry writing group. In her free time she also enjoys performing and playing her trumpet in �ve community ensembles as well as sharing her time as a Big Sister through the buddy program.

Eileen shared that among the many activities she loves at the Fellowship Club, she has participated in the Annual Sunset Walk for Mental Wellness for the past two years. “Last year I raised $105, and this year I raised $230!” Eileen excitedly shared adding, “I wanted to raise money for the place I love.” �e walk is yet another event she looks forward to in aiding her growth and wellness. “It feels good to get out in the fresh air and walk in a special sunset walk…It allows me to work on things and get’s me up and out of the house, so I won’t sleep all day”.

She fundraised by telling her friends and church group members about the walk, sharing her passion for contributing back to the Mental Wellness Center. She feels the Fellowship Club gives her comfort and the safety net to work on her wellness. She notes how much hope and meaning the organization has brought to her life. Eileen is a shining example of positivity and resilience. �e entire Mental Wellness Center community is grateful to her e�orts and leadership.

NAMI News: 2016 Eldridge AdvocacyAward to Lynne Gibbs NAMI Southern Santa Barbara County and the Mental Wellness Center created the Eldridge Advocacy Award to recognize NAMI members who exhibit extraordinary devotion to upholding NAMI ideals through their advocacy on behalf of people living with mental health disorders and their families.

�is year’s honoree is NAMI member and newly appointed Chair of our Public Policy Committee, Lynne Gibbs. Lynne has been a dedicated advocate at the national, state and local levels and has been instrumental in the multi-year e�ort to bring “Laura’s Law” to our county, which provides treatment to people who are ill and are unable to recognize that they need treatment. Lynne accepted her award at our end-of-summer celebration, which took place at the Fellowship Club patio at the Mental Wellness Center on August 18th.

Mike Gorodezky, who has worked with Lynne for several years, feels that Lynne is a woman of great personal commitment. Gorodezky states, “Lynne joins with others to advance the issues she cares about and stays focused on the goals. She has built a personal network of other advocates and involves them when she needs help. Her dedication is inspirational. “

Lynne volunteers at the Ventura County Help Line. NAMI National is a big part of Lynne’s life and she volunteers with the Mental Wellness Center Education Course. Lynne also serves on many other committees through the County of Mental Health, Crisis Action Team, Forensic Teams, HART, ACT Committee, and the Sheri�’s Department Committees. �ank you, Lynne!

The Fellowship Club continued to be a safe and welcoming place for self-directed mental health recovery.

Services expanded to include young people’s families – a very important resource!

Our Advocates reached out with increased community presentations, and individualized attention to adults and families.

People’s shared experiences personalized complex and large-scale mental health issues.

Our instructors taught children in 30 schools this year that mental health is health.

Offering a variety of classes, this program welcomed all community residents, building knowledge and connections for wellness.

We were granted a 3-year national accreditation! Our CARF-certified program helped adults succeed in the competitive job market.

Our work is needed and the community has benefited!

Now in its 16th year, this intensive course prepared new families for living well when a loved one lives with a serious mental illness.

Two new, licensed homes opened for adults needing safe and stable housing.

This 8-hour course increased community awareness and emergency preparedness for mental health.

�e Mental Wellness Center is pleased to have received a two-year unrestricted operating support grant of $150,000 from the Weingart Foundation in April of 2016. �is builds upon past funding from the Weingart Foundation, and we have been very grateful for the opportunities provided by the generous support. We look forward to using this new grant to strengthen our organization and serve our community

even further. We know that as we improve people’s mental wellness, we will improve the lives of individuals and families, and the community at large.

MWC Receives $150,000 Grant from Weingart Foundation

Cottage Health Awards MWC with $75,000 Grant In December 2015, Cottage Health awarded the Mental Wellness Center a Community Partnership grant of $75,000 for 2016. �e grant underscores Cottage Health’s commitment to our organization as a community partner, and to the bene�ts that we provide to the residents of the greater Santa Barbara region. We are pleased to partner with Cottage Health to promote access to healthcare – both physical and mental – and we are working to improve the lives of all of our residents.

Spotlight: Employment Services �e Employment Services Department works in partnership with clients to overcome barriers that may interfere with employment, such as homelessness, lack of food, clothing, health insurance, transportation, education and a recent job history. �e last �scal year has brought signi�cant personal and professional growth for clients. Of the 60 referrals received, 31 clients went through our program of job preparation and job placement, meeting the expected rate of participation.

Impressively, 86% of these individuals who utilized our program reached the “90 Day Positive Closure” and beyond, maintaining their jobs for at least 3 months!

Adding to these triumphs are the wide array of positive outcomes that clients reported at their follow-up well-being interviews. Clients noted their quality of life improved overall, speci�cally highlighting their happiness in their personal and professional lives. �e well-being reports revealed community integration, involvement in daily living activities, increased self-esteem, self-direction and self-reliance. �e reports also demonstrated growth in school functioning, increased pay in addition to work hours and bene�ts, as well as increased in independent living, and the improvement in health and quality of relationships.

An example of these wonderful success stories is JJ, who came to the Mental Wellness Center in February of this year. JJ had several barriers to overcome, including limited education, personal transportation, stable housing, no recent work history and no professional references. Despite these challenges and his past struggles with substance abuse, JJ is a shining example of determination and resiliency in mental wellness. In a joint e�ort with the Department of Rehabilitation, JJ was able to secure enrollment in the On �e Job Training program in March. He is making more than minimum wage and has successfully maintained his position.

During the last several months JJ has continued his recovery, opened a savings account to purchase a car, and has begun searching for housing. JJ will return to services when he is ready to tackle his next goal of returning to school to obtain his G.E.D. Congratulations to JJ and his strength and perseverance in achieving mental wellness. He is proof that recovery is possible, and we look forward to sharing more of his journey.
