You Rock! Together we can make sure all students are successful.

On Friday October 5th, we will conduct our Whole School Evacuation Drill.

Please make sure your child wears comfortable clothes and shoes, brings a

rain jacket and a change of clothing, (in case of rain), and brings a water bot-

tle. Safety drills are an important part of making sure that our students, staff

and campus are ready for emergencies.

We will also celebrate the hard work our students have done during quarter

one with our annual Fall Festival, happening on campus after lunch Friday afternoon. There will be games and

food booths. Please send your child with a small amount of spending money for the event.

We look forward to seeing you at our October 20th Parent Night. We will share our current Academic & Financial

Plan, our Strive HI results from last school year and ask for your input as we plan for the future.

It has been a pleasure working with our students this quarter. They continue to inspire with their zest for life, their

imagination, and their wonderment. Being in classrooms with teachers focusing on meaningful conversations,

7th Grade Students Take a

Virtual Fieldtrip to the Pali

Lookout! This month our 7th grade Social Studies classes

were visited by Kauai Community College’s

Cognitive Learning Center STEM Outreach Pro-

gram. Students had an opportunity to experience

virtual technology firsthand. Using Samsung Gal-

axy phones and Head Mounted Displays

(HMD’s), 7th graders got to visit the site of the

famous Battle of Nu’uanu without leaving Kauai!

In addition to visiting a historic battlefield, stu-

dents experimented with other uses of virtual re-

ality including applications in healthcare, educa-

tion, and entertainment. If you would like more

information about the COG program please con-

tact Trineen at [email protected]. CKTV News In case anyone missed the September

premiere of "Aloha Atlanta," an inside

Note to All 6th Graders

Please complete at least 4 TeenBiz activi-

ties per month at 75% or higher on the first

try. Also, make sure you are typing with the

correct finger positioning so eventually you'll

be able to type without looking at the key-

board.

Parents, feel free to ask your child to show

you their TeenBiz online account with any de-

vice. You will be able to see the topics they

are reading about, their achievements, and

scores.

Donations

Aloha Parents and Guardians,

Many of you placed a check mark next to the

“Donate $$ toward assisting students” section on the be-

ginning of the year PCNC blue sheet. Some did not re-

turn the donation with the form. If you would like to do-

nate, please make a check out to CKMS and give it to the

office for the PCNC box so I can generate a receipt for

you. If you give cash, make sure your name is on the en-

velope!

Dealing with Cyberbullying Q & A Question: How can I help my middle grader stay safe from online bullying?

Answer: First, explain that what may seem like common online behavior can be cyberbullying. If

friends post or share embarrassing photos or videos of others, classmates spread rumors on cell phones,

or peers send hurtful messages via social media, that’s crossing a line. If done purposely and repeatedly,

it’s considered cyberbullying.

Also, point out that what happens online may have serious, real-life consequences. A humiliating

photo gone viral could cause the victim to stay away from friends or hurt herself/himself. And the bully

can get into trouble at home, at school, or even with the law.

If your teen receives a bullying email, text , or social media message, tell her/him not to respond.

That may make the situation worse. Instead, have her/him save or print it to keep a record. Then, (s)he

should block the sender and tell you about it so you can decide what to do, such as notifying your Inter-

net service provider or the school.

Acts of Kindness It’s free, it can be big or small, and it can make your child feel good whether (s)he gets it or

gives it away. What is it? Kindness!

Middle graders who are considerate get along better with classmates and adults. Try these

suggestions.

Take action

Encourage your tween to be kind. If there is a new student in her/his classes, ask how (s)he

might feel if (s)he were new. Then, (s)he can think of ways to make the new student feel

welcome, such as introducing herself/himself or sitting with her/him at an assembly.

Celebrate

Comment on your child’s kind behaviors. You might say, “That was so nice of you to put

away your brother’s laundry while he’s sick.? Or declare “Kindness Week.” Have family

members write down random acts of kindness they see each other do, and take turns reading

them aloud at dinner.

STOP F LU AT SCHOOL

A flu vaccine is the best way to protect against the flu and everyone

can benefit from that protection. The Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months and older get

a flu vaccination every year. This year, based on Advisory Commit-

tee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations, only the

injectable flu vaccine (inactivated influenza vaccine, IIV) will be ad-

ministered.

The Hawaii Department of Health and partner organizations continue

to be committed to “Stop Flu at School” vaccination clinics this year.

Due to multiple factors, Stop Flu at School clinics will be delayed

this year with the majority of clinics occurring in January.

Parents/guardians of school-aged children, especially children that

may have other health conditions that place them at higher risk

for serious complications due to influenza illness, may wish to

speak with their child’s physician about receiving the flu vaccine

in their office.

We support parents who choose to have their children vaccinated

earlier in the flu season at their pediatrician’s office.

Most health insurance plans cover the cost of recommended vac-

cines. Check with your insurance provider for details of coverage.
