2. Activities before using the computer
Students and teacher will brainstorm and start a KWL to show what
they know, what they want to learn, and then finally what they
learned.
Students will view the five minute video on Old Mesilla and take
notes in their Social Studies Journals.
Strategies to develop students attitudes towards the problem,
motivation, and overall mindfulness:
Teacher will have a class discussion about the Mexican War, Treaty
of Guadalupe-Hidalgo and Gadsden Purchase.Then the teacher will use
Google Earth to show the location of Old Mesilla.
Students will research information about Old Mesilla, the Mexican
War, Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo and the Gadsden Purchase.Students
will gather information from internet, textbook, and other sources.
Students will obtain a map of the area that was purchased from
Mexico.
3. NM Standards and Benchmarks: STRAND : History
Grade Level:5th grade
Content Standard I: Students are able to identify important people
and events in order to analyze significant patterns, relationships,
themes, ideas, beliefs, and turning points in New Mexico, United
States, and world history in order to understand the complexity of
the human experience. 5-8 Benchmark 1-D. Skills: research
historical events and people from a variety of perspectives: use
resources for historical information (e.g., libraries, museums,
historical societies, courthouse, worldwide web, family records,
elders); 3. gather, organize and interpret information using a
variety of media and technology;
Identify and describe the significance of American symbols,
landmarks and essential documents (e.g., treaty of Guadalupe
Hildago; Gadsden purchase)
4. Activities While Using the Computer
Students will work in groups of three.
Strategies to develop students attitudes towards the problem,
motivation, and overall mindfulness:
Students will use creativity and innovation to construct a written
summary of what they are learning using word processor.
Students will use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct
research, and use appropriate digital tools and resources to create
a power point presentation.
Students will have an introduction, body, and conclusion.There will
be a minimum of 5 paragraphs.They will use a 12 pt. font, times
roman, double spaced, and no spelling errors. They must include
main points that have to do with the significance of Old Mesilla to
the Gadsden Purchase and our area.
There must be a map of the Gadsden Purchase or of Old Mesilla in
their power point.There is a minimum of 7 slides.At least 2
inserted clip art or image in power point.They must explain how
people and events influenced the development of New Mexico.
5. Activities after Using the Computer
In their groups students will work on the Think Sheet. Students
will use the information from their research to answer some of the
questions which will be:
How different would the area near Mesilla be if there had not been
the Gadsden Purchase?
What are the pros and cons of the Gadsden Purchase?
Do you think that it was fair to pay Mexico for the land?
How has Old Mesilla been a significant historical landmark?
Supporting Activities
Students will create a timeline using word processor to show the
significant events that led up to the Gadsden Purchase.
