ROSE CARE CORNER for November , 2014

by Phyllis Henslin, Master Rosarian

November has arrived, our summer heat has left and our roses are recovering from the stress of

summer. The mild days and cool evenings allow the blooms to mature more slowly and our ros-

es are rewarding us with big beautiful blooms. November is a busy month for all who love and

grow roses. Our own MEVRS Rose Show is on November 15th

. This is a wonderful opportunity for

you to bring several of your best blooms and enter them in the Rose Show. If you are planning

on planting new roses in your garden, attending the Rose Show also allows you to see the differ-

ent varieties of roses that grow well in our area. Continue to be attentive to your fall rose care.

Watering: Be aware as temperatures drop below 90 degrees you can start adjusting your water-

ing schedule accordingly.

Fertilizing: Continue to fertilize heavily until around the end of November and finish with a ½

rate application the first part of December. You can use a water-soluble fertilizer such as Mira-

cle Gro or Magnum Grow or, if you prefer, a granular product such as Arizona’s Best Citrus Food.

Fish emulsion can be used at the rate of one tablespoon per gallon of water, with one gallon ap-

plied to each large rose bush and ½ gallon to miniatures. Adding fish emulsion every two weeks

during October and November helps improve the size and color of the blooms.

Remember: Water before and after you apply fertilizer.

Spraying: With the return of cool nights and warm days, you may see powdery mildew appearing

on your roses. Use a fungicide to prevent powdery mildew. Thrips will invade the buds on your

roses and cause brown edge damage to the petals. Spritzing only the buds as soon as they are

pea sized will help keep the thrips under control and help avoid killing the beneficial insects you

have in your garden. For small gardens you can purchase premixed Bayer Advanced Rose &

Flower Insect Killer. For large gardens you can purchase Captain Jack Dead Bug concentrate

and mix according to directions. When mixing a concentrate, add 1 teaspoon of Spreader Stick-

er to your water first and then add your product. The spreader sticker helps with the retention

and distribution of the product.

New roses for your garden: Now is the time to get your garden ready for planting new roses in

those empty spots. There will be a nice selection of Miniature Roses for sale at our MEVRS

Rose Show on Nov. 15th

. Check out the garden gloves and small pruners (perfect for deadhead-

ing) that will also be for sale. Berridge Nursery will have bare root roses available starting late

December. Our other excellent source of roses, Bakers Nursery is closing their doors the end of

the year.

Share your love of roses: Give a rose to a friend or neighbor. It will make both of you feel good.

ARIZONA ROSE SOCIETIES

Bill Sheperd, Treasurer

The Arizona Rose Societies was formed in 1967 and presently is made up of 5 Arizona

rose societies who are affiliated with the American Rose Society. Its purpose is to en-

courage fellowship and cooperation among the members of the various societies by

promoting the banquet as a cooperative effort of mutual interest.

The 5 participating societies are: Rose Society of Glendale, Rose Society of Green Val-

ley, Mesa/East Valley Rose Society, Phoenix Rose Society and the Tucson Rose Society.

The Arizona Rose Societies is governed by a Coordinating Council consisting of one

delegate, usually the society President, from each society. A coordinator (currently

Helen Baird) carries over the records from year to year and assist the general chair-

man who is the delegate from that years host society. A Secretary (currently Marylou

Coffman) records and distributes minutes of the Council meetings and a Treasurer

(currently Bill Sheperd) handles the financial records. Although there are no regular

dues, the Coordinating Council has the power to level member societies equally when

necessary to defray expenses which to my knowledge has never happened.

On a rotating basis each society is responsible for a certain task ranging from being

the host society, who secures the venue, to procuring the speaker or entertainment,

to running the small rose show. Other task include printing programs, printing and

distributing the tickets etc.

There is a small rose show during the banquet, that allows each attendee to enter

one Arizona grown entry (either single stem or spray) in any one of 7 classes which

are: 1. Hybrid Tea/Grandiflora, 2. Floribunda, 3. Miniature/Miniflora, 4. Large or Minia-

ture Dried Rose, 5. Shrub/Old Garden Rose, 6. Fully Open or Climber and 7. Small Ar-

rangement. There will be trophies awarded to the Blue Ribbon Winner in each class.

The best entry in the show is awarded the “David Guyton Award” which was donated

by the late Grace Seward of California in memory of a long time rose grower, judge

and friend from Sun City, Arizona.

NOVEMBER 2014 7

Several additional awards are presented at the banquet each year. The “Rosa Galica

Award” is presented to a person or couple who has contributed notably to the cause

of the rose in Arizona over a period of years. The “Dr. Ray Allen Education Award”,

donated by Grace Seward in 2001, is presented to the individual or Society that has

made an exceptional effort in introducing the rose to the people of Arizona and pro-

moting the value of membership in a local rose society as well as membership in the

American Rose Society. Grace Seward established still another award in 2003, this

time to honor an outstanding Consulting Rosarian in Arizona. The award is named for

Paul Wright, its first recipient. The latest award established in 2005 is the “Dr. Richard

“Doc” Fields Lifetime Achievement Award”. Nominees for these awards are accepted

at the Coordinating Board’s May meeting and voted on at the October meeting. The

voting is done by secret ballot by the societies Presidents and the results are only

known by a few until they are awarded at the banquet. Also, each member society

may award the American Rose Society sanctioned “Rose Bud Award” to a person or

couple from their society who is a relative newcomer showing great promise of pro-

moting the cause of the ROSE.

Arizona is the only state that has this special tradition. It is very important that we

don’t let this wonderful tradition fade away. The banquet is always the first Saturday

of December and it may be a luncheon or dinner depending what the Host society de-

cides.

Our Host for 2014 is the Mesa/East Valley Rose Society and it will be a luncheon held

at the Mesa Community College on December 6th. So, please join us for a few hours

of rose fellowship with old friends and meet new one. They promise the food will be

tasty and the guest speaker will be interesting and educational.

Get ready for fall rose care

MEVRS will have gloves and pruners for sale at our monthly meet-

ings starting in September. These gloves come in small, medium,

large and x-large sizes. A must have as they protect your arms from

the rose prickles. The pruners are just the right size for deadhead-

ing and trimming small rose canes. We hope to have them available

also at the monthly MCC Rose Garden Dead headers mtg. that is

held on the 3rd Saturday of each month.

Sunshine N Roses PSWD 2015 District Convention

November 19 – 22, 2015

We formed a committee earlier this year to begin planning this event that will be

hosted by MEVRS at Mesa Community College. We have put together a tentative

program with a Rose Show and Educational Programs around the ARS meetings

that take place at these events.

We are planning to make this event a “One-to-be-remembered” and spoken about

throughout the Rose community. We are intending to have programs that will draw

not only rose enthusiasts, but also gardeners of all types from across the valley. The

Banquet will not be a dreary meal, but entertaining, and a MUST-ATTEND event.

To help reduce the cost for some of our out of town visitors we are going to offer

them an opportunity to get to know fellow rose enthusiasts a little better, by offer-

ing them Bed & Breakfast accommodation with a local Rose Society Member. If you

feel you would like to host a visitor, please let me know so we can include you in

the planning process.

Watch this space for more news on our Sunshine N Roses 2015 Convention.
